Lok No Further, Here Are The Best Lok Lok Spots In Singapore So You Don’t Have To Travel To JB

I’ll always remember the first time I ate Lok Lok out of a converted van in JB. Although it was a tad unhygienic, it was a truly fun and unique dining experience.

Lok Lok is a dish consisting of various deep-fried foods such as meats and vegetables that are served on a skewer and traditionally dipped into thick satay sauce.

Lok Lok is EXTREMELY underrated in Singapore. If you haven’t tried it, honestly why?

So here it is. Here’s a list of Lok Lok spots you can enjoy in Singapore so you don’t have to travel all the way to JB.

Up All Night To Get Lok-y

1. Zaolek Lok Lok

This Lok Lok buffet offers up to 60 different types of skewers, cooking methods – boiled, deep fried, bbq as well as a huge variety of sauces for you to combine and make it your own.

Best part, this Lok Lok will only cost you $24 nett/pax from Tuesdays to Thursdays and $27 nett/pax from Fridays to Sundays for all you can eat!

So feast to your heart’s content at Zaolek Lok Lok.

2. Chuan Le Xiang Lok Lok

This next one is a little bit out of the way but definitely worth the trip.

This old school Lok Lok dining experience is a passed-down 25-year Singapore family-kept recipe extracted from Satay Bee Hoon.

There’re three soup bases for you to choose from (chicken/mala/satay) but we highly recommend the satay base. Each base pot will cost you $8.

Best part, each stick goes as low as $1 so you know you’ll be leaving this place with a food coma.

The cheese used is a mixture of nacho cheese and mozzarella. In case you’re someone who downs cheese like water, they provide refills for free. So you can eat all the cheese that you want.

Their Cheesy BBQ Lok Lok ($38) comes in a set which includes 18 sticks of food of your choice. You can also order additional skewered ingredients if you’re still hungry!

The owners of this stall have been hawking this iconic dish for over 50 years in the Old Airport vicinity, so you know you’re in for a real treat!

There is a minimum order of 7 sticks, and ranges from $1.20 – $3.00 per stick. You can expect plenty of vegetable skewers and even udon wrapped in pork belly!

Located in Chomp Chomp Food Centre, you can expect a 45 minute wait as the process to prepare these skewers involves coating the chosen skewers in their special homemade sauce and either grilling these skewers over a charcoal grill, or deep frying them.

However it’s truly worth the wait, so sit around, enjoy a drink or two while Wang BBQ & Grill prepares their special Lok Lok for you.

If You’ve Always Wanted To Go To A Frat Party, There’s One Happening This Wednesday

If you’ve seen any American Pie movie or Bad Neighbours, you’d know that Hollywood has a rather dramatic portrayal of university life.

The insane frat parties, loud party music, kegs upon kegs of booze, and all the coolest kids in school.

[caption id="attachment_33922" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Club AVRY[/caption]

The event, a collaboration between a group of university students and Club AVRY, will be happening this Wednesday, 11 April 2018.

Are you 18?

To enter, you will need to present your university matriculation card and ID. If you’re alumni, you may also use your old matriculation card. Entry is free for ladies and $10 for guys. It’s for the House Fund.

On top of that, everyone will get a free initiation drink on the house. Guests who wish to join Alpha Sigma will have to perform a special ritual and down a super drink before entry is granted. Classic frat house.

Each party will be powered by DJs from various universities. This week’s party will feature selected DJs from NUS.

During the party, look out for activities such as Beer Pong (of course), Beer Bong, and the Tequila boys who will be going around with water guns filled with vodka.

[caption id="attachment_33920" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Mercado Libre[/caption]

There’ll also be a Gummy Bear going around with a bag of alcoholic gummy bears.

Find and show him the number of Instastories you’ve taken at Alpha Sigma and he’ll give you a handful of vodka gummy bears corresponding to the number of Instastories you’ve taken.

And that’s not all. At the end of the night, Jello Shots will be given to all guests. Take a photo of yourself doing the Alpha sign, tag #Clout #AVRY #AlphaSigma, and upload it to Instagram.

[caption id="attachment_33923" align="aligncenter" width="720"] Image Credit: Liquor.com[/caption]

Present the Instagram post at the door and every 20 likes gets you 1 free Jello Shot redemption coupon, with a maximum of 10 Jello Shots redeemable per person.

Beers go for $10 a bottle at Alpha Sigma. But if you think you’re a fast drinker, challenge the Beer Chugging Wall Of Fame.

[caption id="attachment_33924" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Image Credit: Studomat[/caption]

Chug a beer as fast as you can and if you finish within the top 3 timings, you’ll get the bottle of beer for free!

If you’re looking to experience a fraternity house party for yourself, gather your friends and head down to Alpha Sigma at Club AVRY this Wednesday!

This Japanese-Inspired French Patisserie Serves Cakes That Are Too Pretty To Eat

If there’s one thing that I can eat for the rest of my life, it would be a good slice of cake.

Now I love cakes as much as, if not more than, the next person. I look forward to my birthday every year because I know I’ll get to indulge in a rich Belgium dark chocolate cake, finished with a silky chocolate glaze.

[caption id="attachment_33875" align="aligncenter" width="450"] GIF Credit: giphy.com[/caption]

I thought no other cakes could ever win my heart. Until, I came across a beautiful, magnificent piece of cake.

After a bit more research, it led me to this really quaint and simple patisserie. Flor Patisserie, you’ve won my heart this time round.

Fantastic Cakes And Where To Eat Them

Flor Patisserie is a Japanese-styled patisserie that serves authentic Japanese inspired French pastry.

They pride in using the freshest and best quality ingredients that have been sourced from overseas (Japan, Belgium, and France), and locally.

The chef at Flor Patisserie, Heidi, aims to create pastries based on the principle of honest baking with the finest ingredients.

Needless to say, their creations are truly a work of art.

Now that Cherry Blossom season is in full swing, Flor Patisserie is serving up sakura themed pastries and you for sure don’t want to miss any of it.

First up, we have the Sakura Tofu Chiffon which is made with salt-pickled Sakura blossoms.

[caption id="attachment_33884" align="aligncenter" width="814"] Image Credit: @flor_patiserrie[/caption]

The Sakura Pie is a puff pastry filled with almond cream, and topped with Sakura chantilly and strawberries. This pie is only available at their Takashimaya outlet.

[caption id="attachment_33879" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @flor_patisserie[/caption]

They also sell mini versions of the Sakura Pie which will be available in all outlets. This pie is made out of Sakura cream, pickled Sakura flower, and a creme d’amandes pie base.

[caption id="attachment_33880" align="aligncenter" width="930"] Image Credit: @flor_patiserrie[/caption]

You can also gift your friends these cute Sakura Honey Cakes which is part of their Sakura Gift Range. These cakes are available in a box of 10.

Honestly, I’ll just buy an entire box and gift it to myself instead.

[caption id="attachment_33882" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: @flor_patisserie[/caption]

This final pastry definitely wins my heart.

The White Strawberry Tart is made with Awayuki strawberry of the Sage prefecture in Japan. The Awayuki strawberries were hand carried back from Tsukiji Market in Japan so you know you’re getting the best stuff.

The sweet strawberry is paired with a fragrant creme d’amandes tart, filled with custard and topped with chantilly.

[caption id="attachment_33883" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @flor_patisserie[/caption]

As this is a seasonal item on the menu, Flor Patisserie only makes a limited amount of these pretty tarts! It’s best to call the outlet and reserve the tarts in advance.

You can order whole cakes via their website and enjoy a 5% discount. Best part, there’s a delivery option so you can order their cakes for any special occasion.

[caption id="attachment_33885" align="aligncenter" width="1308"] Image Credit: @flor_patisserie[/caption]

Find, Reserve, And Go To Your Favourite Restaurant With Just Google Maps

Making reservations at restaurants is one of the things you learn to do as you grow into an adult but nobody enjoys long interactions with strangers.

Because we’re all awkward turtles, we’ve got some good news to share.

Today, Google announced that they’ve partnered with Chope, HungryGoWhere, and Quandoo to launch the new “Reserve with Google” feature.

That’s right, Singaporean users are now able to make reservations at their favourite restaurants directly on Google Maps and Search.

[caption id="attachment_33872" align="aligncenter" width="609"] Image Credit: Google[/caption]

Because making a reservation has always been a bit of a hassle, Google is making that process more seamless.

Now you can just Google search for a restaurant, view its real-time availability, and make a reservation immediately by clicking on the “Find a table” button.

How To Make A Restaurant Reservation With Google

  1. Open Google Maps and search for a restaurant or tap on a restaurant you see on the map.
  2. Tap on the name of the restaurant for more information. If the restaurant uses OpenTable, you should see a “Find a table” button along with the available time slots.
  3. If you’re looking for a time slot that’s not listed, you can update the number of people you’re reserving for, and the specific time slot.
  4. You should be redirected to a confirmation page for your reservation once everything is done.
  5. A confirmation email from OpenTable will be sent to you shortly after confirmation.

Changing or cancelling reservations are also easy. Go to the confirmation email sent to you by OpenTable and just tap on Change or Cancel.

Also, if your Gmail is registered with OpenTable, you’ll get Dining Rewards points for your reservation.

Say goodbye to multiple redirections to different websites and frustratingly long waiting times for reservation calls!

A Noob’s Guide To Buying An Engagement Ring Your Partner Will Love

Proposing to the love of your life can feel like an overwhelming task. You’ve got the girl, you’ve asked her father for her hand in marriage, now it’s time to pick the perfect diamond engagement ring.

What is considered “perfect”? Why do diamonds have different cuts? Princess or cushion shape? Do I spend $500 or $3000 on a ring?

[caption id="attachment_33860" align="aligncenter" width="500"] GIF Credit: giphy.com[/caption]

Here’s a guide on how to pick out the perfect engagement ring for the person you’ll spend the rest of your life with.

Sound Steady

Find Your Stone

Here’s a simple tip on finding the perfect stone. Just remember the 4 C’s: Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat.

1. Cut
Most people will confuse cut for the shape of the ring (emerald, cushion, princess etc). The cut refers to the diamond’s ability to reflect light. The cut of a diamond affects the diamond’s brilliance; this means if it is cut poorly, it will be less luminous.

2. Colour
The colour evaluation of most quality diamonds is based on the absence of colour. The colour scale begins with the letter D – colourless (most expensive) and continues, with increasing presence of colour, to the letter Z.

3. Clarity
Diamond clarity is graded using letter grades, which indicate how many visible flaws can be detected in a stone. The closer it is to being “pure”, the higher the value.

4. Carat
Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs. Diamond price increases with carat weight, because larger diamonds are more rare and more desirable.

It’s important to remember that the overall diamond’s value is determined by the 4Cs and not just the carat weight alone.

Find Your Shape

[caption id="attachment_33853" align="aligncenter" width="564"] Image Credit: pinterest.com[/caption]

This is a useful guide on the different shapes to think of when picking out the engagement ring. You want to pick out a ring that fits her style and preferences.

If she has no preferences and you have no idea which shape to pick, then you can’t go wrong with the popular round shape or the traditional princess shape.

Or perhaps if you know she’s a huge Beyonce fan, Queen B received a gorgeous 18-carat emerald shape diamond engagement ring.

Needless to say, it was flawless.

[caption id="attachment_33854" align="aligncenter" width="480"] Image Credit: Image Credit: makehappymemories.com[/caption]

The prong setting is perhaps the most classic and recognisable setting for most engagement rings.

Of the prong settings, the most common would be the solitaire setting which draws all attention to the stone with little to distract us like other stones or fancy metalwork.

How Much Should I Spend?

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to spend three months’ salary on your engagement ring. There’s nothing romantic about going into a major debt after buying your ring.

[caption id="attachment_33855" align="aligncenter" width="320"] GIF Credit: giphy.com[/caption]

Establish a budget before you step into a jewellery store. This helps your jeweller narrow down rings that are within your price range.

The 4Cs will determine the damage done to your bank account. You can either end up with a $800 or $3000 ring. So budget accordingly and never feel obliged to pay for premium.

After all, love cannot buy right?

Where Do I Shop For Rings?

You can browse for ready-made options at a local jewellery store or chain retailer (Tiffany & Co., Lee Hwa, Harry Winston etc.)

You can also design a custom ring with a private jeweller or find the perfect ring online from reliable sources like Blue Nile.

As we all know, nothing beats heading down to the store and physically handling the ring so you know where your money goes to.

Here are several wallet-friendly jewellery stores to find the perfect ring.

1. ORRO

If you’re looking for a diamond ring that won’t cost you over $1000, then ORRO will be your best friend.

ORRO certified diamond simulants are often known as the “World’s Best Diamond Simulants”. A diamond simulant is a stone that looks similar to a real diamond and shares some of its characteristics.

2. JannPaul
