Finding The Perfect Perfume Is Tough, So I Crafted My Own At This Workshop

It’s kind of crazy how certain scents can instantly evoke memories you’d completely forgotten about.

The smell of warm chocolate cookies can transport you to that night you slept underneath the Christmas tree because your dad told you Santa and his reindeers will show up. Sunscreen and coconut oil can remind you of sunny days in Bali. And Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin cologne might make you recall your ex-boyfriend’s….mom?

There is a plethora of brands out there offering fragrances but the downside is there’s always the chance you may end up wearing the same scent as someone else–especially if you wear a classic fragrance like Chanel No. 5.

This is where Oo La Lab comes in. Established in 2016, this fragrance lab allows you to customise your fragrance with a mixologist to come up with your ideal perfume – from picking all the notes to choosing a name.

Craft Your Own Scent

You’ll smell it before you see Oo La Lab’s workshop, their counters are lined with bottles of essential oils and perfumes. Located in Delta House, Oo La Lab lets you customise your own fragrance in a 60-minute perfume making session ($88/pax, $176/two pax).

Starting with a quick theory lesson on the Oo Fragrance Table which has a total of 25 core scent and 2 complex scent available, we set out to start our perfume making process.

The first step required us to take a whiff of every scent and narrow down our favourite ones. The scents were split up to 3 different categories (bottom, middle, top notes).

Now, if you’re like me and you suffer from the butter finger syndrome, you’ll find yourself fumbling with the glass beakers, funnels and the bottles.

Please don’t break anything. Please don’t break anything. PLEASE don’t break anything.

The entire set up felt like a complete throwback to chemistry lessons in secondary school. All that’s left was a lab coat, goggles and gloves to complete my look.

While I was halfway through smelling the different scents, I started getting a little giddy or perhaps high from all the different smells. The lab also carries “edible” scents such as Vanilla and Gourmande which honestly got my tummy rumbling. The aromas were so sweet that I was almost tempted to taste them. They also carry a limited edition synthetic scent called “Chocolate” which will remind you of a chocolate fondue.

From Fresh and Floral notes to deeper Oriental and Wood fragrances, I had a tough time picking out the scents that would fit my personality.

Once I’ve decided on my scents, it was time to do the math.

I was allowed a total of 20 drops for each round (there are 2 rounds), which must include 10 drops of bottom and 10 drops of middle and top notes (5 from middle, 5 from top).

Here’s the slightly tedious part: Mark down the scents that you want to combine and decide how many drops of each scent will go into your trial mixture.

This requires quite a bit of trial and error because you don’t want to leave the workshop smelling like a Funfetti Cake or the Amazon Rainforest.

Now here’s where you get to feel like a chemist.

Based on your prior selection, it was time to translate 20 drops into 20ml which is the amount needed to fill your perfume bottles! This step was important because an extra drop might change the entire formula of your perfume.

The mixture in the bottle will then be iodised and topped up with alcohol, before being professionally sealed with a spray nozzle and cap. To make it even more personalised, you can name your perfume.

Once that’s done, you’ll receive your 20ml eau de parfum packaged nicely in plastic wrappers with a card indicating your mixture so you can re-order on the website if you ever run out!

If you’re ever looking at doing something out of the ordinary in Singapore, this workshop is perfect for a date or even as a birthday gift. You’d be surprised to find out how everyone’s preferences are so different. Who knows, you might just be able to recreate a perfume you love.

Is Everything Really Better With Chilli? We Tried Krispy Kreme’s New Chilli Donuts And Found Out

Krispy Kreme Singapore has unveiled 2 new flavours in their range of donuts, for National Day.

Introducing the White Chocolate Chilli Donut and the Caramel Chilli Donut.

While it’s new in Singapore, it’s not the first time Krispy Kreme has released chilli-flavoured donuts. Back in April, Krispy Kreme Malaysia released Caramel Chilli Donut as an April Fool’s joke.

However, the question here is, “is EVERYTHING really better with chilli?”

So, we bought and tried it.

Chilli On Donuts

The donuts might seem intimidating for those of you who cannot handle your spice, but they’re actually quite decent.

The White Chocolate Chilli Donut ($2.95) is basically a standard white chocolate donut with dried chilli flakes (like the ones you get at Pizza Hut).

We can barely taste the chilli, though the warmth of the spice does show up in the aftertaste.

The Caramel Chilli Donut ($2.95) was less sweet, compared to the White Chocolate variant, and had a stronger chilli taste.

Of the 2 chilli flavours, White Chocolate Chilli was the crowd favourite.

These 2 chilli donuts are available from now till 31 August 2018 at all Krispy Kreme outlets islandwide.

There’s another SG Donut ($3.30) that’s also a National Day special.

It’s a dense custard donut with frosting on the top. It tastes good and they’re very generous with the custard. However, it is quite saccharine after a few bites.

All in all, these new flavours aren’t as bad as we thought they’d be. But if you’re intent on trying the chilli ones, go for the White Chocolate Chilli.

Turns out, most things are really better with chilli, donuts included. Just maybe not caramel.

Aqua S Is Bringing Their Famous Sea Salt Soft Serve To S’pore, And It Looks Like A Dream!

For all of you with a sweet tooth, your blood sugar levels are about to go through the roof.

Sydney’s famous turquoise Sea Salt Soft Serve (say it quickly 10 times) brand, Aqua S, will be opening their first outlet in Singapore soon!

While many foods have claimed to be Instagrammable, this is by far the prettiest we’ve seen, judging from their Instagram posts.

But that’s not why we’re excited – they have some really interesting soft serve flavours!

Sydney Sea Salt Soft Serve

While Aqua S is known for their Sea Salt soft serve, they have over 100 flavours back home in Sydney.

Some of the interesting flavours include Egg Pudding, Tofu, Baileys, and Manuka Honey.

As you can see, each flavour comes in their own delightful hue, with their signature Sea Salt flavour in turquoise.

Every ice cream cone is black, which makes the colours of their soft serve look more vibrant by contrast.

You can also choose to mix 2 flavours in a swirl, because let’s be honest, with over 100 flavours, you want to try as many flavours as possible.

After choosing the flavours for your soft serve, next comes the toppings.

Aqua S didn’t neglect this aspect because popcorn and an cotton candy are available as toppings and a freaking TOASTED MARSHMALLOW ON A STICK.

When You’re Broke But Still Want To Shop – Here Are 6 Of Our Favourite Thrift Shops In S’pore

Thanks to Macklemore, thrift shops got a boost in publicity and popularity.

I used to avoid thrift shop because I never understood why anyone would want to buy pre-owned items. After all, the thrill of shopping comes from obtaining new stuff.

But after I went to my first thrift store, my eyes are now open to the wonders of thrift shopping. It’s the same feeling as opening a blind packaged item. You never know what you’re going to find and it’s thrilling.

So here’re some of my favourite thrift shops around Singapore so you can have your very own thrift shop moment.

1. Shop@REDCROSS

The Red Cross Foundation has their very own thrift shops that you can visit at the Red Cross House or at the Red Cross Campsite.

With a wide range of pre-loved items, you can even find collectibles and electronic devices such as e-scooters, Samsung phones, and iPad Pro amongst other things!

If both of the outlets are out of the way or if your schedule doesn’t coincide with their opening hours, you can also find them on Carousell.

Song & Song doesn’t exist. On the Internet, that is. They’re completely offline and the truth is, they don’t really need to be on social media.

Song & Song sells clothing for as low as $5.

Most of the clothes here are brandless, though if you spend enough time searching, you might find some gems from certain brands. These are usually rejected pieces due to slight defects that are usually negligible.

They even have baby clothes!

From coats and vests to tops and workout clothing, Song & Song is a fun place to trawl if you’re on a budget.

3. MINDS Shop

The Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS) organisation runs 4 thrift shops across the island.

Each thrift shop carries a range of carefully-selected apparel, furniture, house wares, and other collectibles.

The items are affordable and value-for-money. And don’t worry, the inventory is constantly updated.

With a bit of time, who knows what you’ll find?

Something Old, Something New thrift shop started back in 1997, founded by 2 volunteers at the Singapore Anglican Community Services, Ms Anna Tsang and Ms Felicia Teo.

You can find a ton of apparel, from clothes, shoes and bags and many more.

If you’re lucky, you might even find some items from brands like adidas.

They also hold flea markets every now and then so keep checking their Facebook page to stay up-to-date!

I Paid $400 To Make My Own Watch From Scratch – And It Was Totally Worth The Price Tag

In an era where we grew up with technology, having a timepiece on your wrist is a pretty outdated idea.

Think about it. Why do we need watches when we all have smart phones with very accurate clocks on them? Heck, even our computers/laptops have the time right there in the corner. It’s pretty easy to find out what time it is.

Yet. I like watches. I have over the past couple of years acquired several. From Timex to Seiko, my mom used to love buying watches for my birthday.

However, I’ve realised that I never knew how to repair any of my watches when they died so I end up spending so much money just because the seller tells me, “You need to do a complete overhaul.”

So the lovely folks at Watch Wonderland invited me down to their Academy to learn how to assemble my own watch and leather strap, so I’m better prepared the next time someone tells me my watch needs a complete overhaul.

The Academy

Located in Suntec City, Watch Wonderland is more than just a watch shop. It’s also an academy and a concierge. This retail space carries big names such as Seiko as well as micro-indie brands from the US, France and more. In addition to that, they also carry a total of 6 brands that are made with love by our very own Singaporean watchmakers.

At Watch Wonderland, they place a strong focus on their selection of watches. You can purchase your watches with an ease of mind because their selection process is one that covers everything from aesthetics to mechanical testing before they allow a brand into their portfolio.

Apart from buying watches, Watch Wonderland is also a place for watch enthusiasts to convene with other likeminded people to learn more about this fascinating universe.

I was honestly scared shitless at this moment because 1. I’m terrible at fixing things and 2. I’ve never attended a single leather making class in my entire life. However, the course instructor, Mr Vincent Goh, assured me that I’ll do just fine.

Nonetheless, we dove right in and learned how to assemble the basic parts, oil and regulate the timing of the watch.

They first opened The Academy in November 2017 and have since been consistently hosting classes through The Academy to broaden the knowledge and perspective of their audience.

“I’ve had participants flying in from all over the world JUST to attend this workshop. In fact, my youngest participant was only 12 years old and she managed to complete the workshop,” Vincent exclaimed.

So I calmed down, rolled up my sleeves, put on my finger gloves and got to work. Vincent started off with a video explaining how a mechanical watch works. He printed out a step-by-step guide for us so we always knew what to do next.

I was lost and struggling half the time but Vincent was patient and kind enough to guide me on where to place the different parts and constantly checked on my work to ensure that I didn’t miss a step.

To be honest, if I never knew who he was, I’d mistake him for some random uncle who loves to lepak at the kopitiam with his friends but I was completely wrong. Vincent is an extremely talented and experienced watchmaker who has worked on restoring 500 vintage watches in the US back in the 90s.

Being posted to China for 11 years also saw him having more opportunities to learn from highly experienced watchmakers and veterans, giving him an advanced knowledge of watch repair that no book has ever documented.

So I knew, I was in very safe hands.

“Eh Farhanah, come come I take your photo. You wayang a bit lah, pretend you fixing, don’t look at camera ah! 1…2…3…!” he shouted.

After 2 hours of putting the watch together and using the TimeGrapher to regulate the watch timing, I was extremely satisfied with my final product. Vincent gave me a little pat on my back and told me I did a pretty great job for a first timer.

Leather Crafting

No watch is complete without a strap. Especially one that further tells your audience about your personality.

We were guided by our leather craft instructor, Mr Jeremiah Ang who established J.Myers Co six years ago, and has since grew from a one-man show, to creating numerous products in collaboration with brands such as Bentley, Vertu, Red Army Watches and Bang & Olufsen.

He first introduced to us the different types of leather and finally gave us two colours to pick from.

After a brief introduction as to how to use the tools, we got to marking and cutting out our leather strap using a template that he prepared for us. We crafted our very own leather NATO strap for the watch that we assembled earlier on.

Once that was all done, we used a “burning” tool to help us create the pattern which makes the entire watch look a lot more polished and refined.

The process to making your own leather strap was not easy at all. The last step, which was to stitch the holes we created was definitely the toughest part of it all. After an hour of poking my thumb and messing up my stitches, there were tiny beads of sweat formed on my forehead and I was pretty much ready to get it all over and done with.

Leather crafting is an amazing art form and I’m glad that I finally have a deeper appreciation for artisans and designers who are dedicated to creating quality leather products, with the sole objective to bring about a deeper appreciation of craftsmanship. One stitch at a time.

After 5 gruelling hours, my face glowed (or maybe it was the sweat) when I finally assembled my watch together. Wearing it for the first time felt so satisfying because I knew I put in all my effort into making this watch.

Watch Wonderland has changed my expectations of a brick-and-mortar store forever. This chic space doesn’t just sell watches but it also doubles up as an Academy with a workshop space right in the middle of the store.

Welcoming their customers with a giant neon logo emblazoned across a wall, it’s the opposite of typical luxury watch boutiques with intimidating grand entrances and snooty judgey salesmen clad in suit and tie.

So if you’re ever looking at doing something out of the ordinary in Singapore, then Watch Wonderland is a great place for watch enthusiasts to come together and learn about leather crafting or watchmaking from the masters themselves.

If You Love The Beef Cubes At The Geylang Bazaar – They’re Opening A Store In Tampines Soon!

Tampines residents sure are spoilt for choice, with so many new eateries opening in Century Square.

First there was Seoul in a Sandwich, then Two Hana, and now Beef Bro will also be opening an outlet there on 5 August 2018!

If you were at the Geylang Serai Bazaar this year, you’ll probably recognise Beef Bro.

They were the newcomers at the annual Geylang Serai bazaar this year and generated long queues.

Beef, Bro

Opened by Mediacorp actor Danial Ashriq, Beef Bro made their debut at the Geylang Serai Bazaar this year and drew crowds with up to an hour and a half of waiting time.

What they’re known for is, of course, beef. Specifically, flame-grilled beef cubes, like the ones you find in Taiwan.

Each order of beef cubes is seared and cooked with a blow torch upon order and comes with a selection of toppings such as Mentaiko, Cheese, Garlic Chilli, Barbecue Sauce, and even their signature Sambal Belacan!

Using a blow torch to cook beef cubes is not a new concept to Singaporeans. There’s Huoyanshaiziniu that opened in 313 Somerset earlier in January this year, who brought the concept of blow-torched beef cubes from Taiwan to Singapore.

The difference here is that Beef Bro is Muslim-owned and they use 100% halal ingredients. They’re currently working towards the MUIS Halal certification so our Muslim friends can rest assured that what they’re eating is Halal.

Their first outlet at Century Square will serve up their signature blow torch beef cubes as well as an expanded menu with bento sets.

For those of you who don’t eat beef, they also have flame-grilled seafood options too!

The popular Mentaiko Beef Cubes will go for $14.90, while the Chicken Cubes and Mentaiko Scallops go for $5.90 and $11.90 respectively.

Bento sets go for $8 to $13, with an option to add mozzarella cheese for an extra $2.

You’ll be able to choose your preferred doneness for the beef cubes. Though if you order it well done, then maybe you shouldn’t go for the beef. Just saying.

Beef Bro opens at Century Square on 5 August 2018 and the first 200 customers will get FREE beef cubes. Good things must share so don’t say we neh say.

Now, Liang Sandwich Bar from China has opened its first outlet in Singapore at Vivocity!

Scallion Pancake Sandwiches

The sandwiches at Liang Sandwich Bar aren’t made with bread. What’s used instead, are scallion pancakes that come with fillings such as chicken, shredded lettuce, egg crepe, and sauce.

Endorsed by iconic Taiwanese singer-songwriter, Jay Chou, Liang Sandwich Bar has over 12,000 outlets across 300+ cities such as Mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, United States of America, Canada, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and now Singapore!

If you’ve tried and love scallion pancakes, you’ll love this. Scallion pancakes are much more fragrant than toasts and already hold plenty of flavour on its own.

Throw in traditional sandwich ingredients and you have a Liang scallion pancake sandwich.

There are 9 different scallion pancake sandwiches on the menu for you choose from.

The Chicken Bolognese Sandwich ($5.50) and the Liang Chicken Sandwich ($5.90) are both recommended by Jay Chou.

The Liang Chicken Sandwich comes with savoury smoked chicken, shredded lettuce, egg crepe, and a sauce of your choice.

You can also choose the type of sauce you’d like to have in your sandwich. The recommended sauce is definitely the Liang’s Sauce that’s made from a special secret recipe.

Recently, Food League SG’s Zermatt Neo paid them a visit and scarfed 10 of the scallion pancake sandwiches.

Taiwan F&B Chain ‘Ten Ren Tea’ Brings Their Popular Bubble Tea To Singapore

If you’re as done as we are regarding Durian and Nasi Lemak-flavoured stuff, it’s about time we had something more….refreshing.

And this news could not have come at a better time.

Ten Ren Tea will be opening their very first Singapore outlet this Saturday, 28 July 2018, at Chinatown Point!

Leading Taiwanese Bubble Tea Brand

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Ten Ren Tea was established in 1953 and is THE leading tea retailer in Taiwan.

That’s not all, they have over 2000 outlets in Australia, Japan, Canada, Malaysia, and North America.

If you don’t believe me, they’ve pasted their credentials all over the boards in Chinatown Point.

In China, they’re also known as Ten Fu, a subsidiary of Ten Ren Tea.

The Chinatown Point outlet will have a seating area that can accommodate up to 50 people.

While the menu isn’t revealed at the moment, the global outlets of Ten Ren Tea have been known to serve classic Taiwanese food such as beef noodles, pork cutlet rice, and even desserts like waffles and toasts.

Some of you might be skeptical as to Ten Ren Tea’s decision to serve food too, after all isn’t this a brand for TEA? Don’t worry, their food doesn’t come at the expense of the quality of their tea.

I personally, don’t doubt the standard of their tea. After all, my grandmother only buys her tea from Ten Fu Tea in China.
