Edible Helium Balloons Are Coming To Central Perk So You And Your F.R.I.E.N.D.S Can All Sound Like Chipmunks

If you’ve had any kind of childhood at all, there’s one thing you’d probably have done as a kid: breathe helium from a balloon and tried talking after it. Whether you have done it yourself or watched someone else do it on YouTube, it’s ALWAYS hilarious.

For those of you who’ve never had this sacred childhood experience, now you can with EDIBLE Helium Balloons. Yep, that’s helium balloons are not only safe, but delicious to eat.

This latest addition to the menu at Singapore’s own FRIENDS-themed cafe, Central Perk, was inspired by a dish at 3 Michelin starred ‘Alinea’ in Chicago. The brainchild of one of its co-owners, Grant Achatz, it’s been touted as one of the coolest desserts in America!

This would be its first ever appearance in Asia.

[caption id="attachment_24415" align="aligncenter" width="694"] The Edible Helium Balloon was created by the co-owner of a 3 Michelin starred restaurant in Chicago, ‘Alinea’[/caption]

As with most of Central Perk’s food and drink offerings, every dish has a FRIENDS-related story behind it. This dessert draws inspiration from this particular episode of the beloved sitcom:

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtA4jNrKVSQ[/embed]

Coming in 3 flavours–strawberry (red), banana (yellow) and blueberry (blue)–these edible balloons each come attached to a chocolate stick.

So, how do I eat this? Simply put your mouth to the balloon and suck in the helium! Talk, laugh, sing, do whatever you want with your newfound chipmunk voices! You’re sure to have a blast with your friends.

We headed down to Central Perk to have a taste of their newest dessert. Here’s a sneak peek!

[caption id="attachment_24836" align="alignnone" width="750"] Jessie trying out the edible helium balloon[/caption]

Our ambassador, Jessie, had a few turns at the bubble-like dessert. Bringing back memories of the plastic bubbles we used to blow, pop and play with as kids, we found that this dessert was a lot more delicate.

https://youtu.be/k6oMofTzins

The effects of the helium didn’t last very long, just 3-5 seconds before leaving us with sticky, sweet remnants. We were also served a deconstructed Nutella cake along with the helium balloon.

[caption id="attachment_24837" align="alignnone" width="750"] Deconstructed nutella flavoured cake[/caption]

Bite-sized Nutella cake served atop a scoop of frozen yoghurt and chocolate syrup – we were disappointed to find that the Nutella cake hardly tasted of Nutella. Instead, it tasted like your regular chocolate cake, although we were surprised to find that the frozen yoghurt gave the dessert a kick of tartness.

In every other bite we took, we found tiny sticky pieces of candy which gave the dessert a surprising element!

This fun, wacky dessert will be available from the 2nd week of April onwards, although prices are currently unavailable. Do watch this space for more information!

Why The Jetsetter Life Isn’t As Glamourous As It Seems

To put it bluntly, unless your last name is Kardashian or Trump, flying is not fun at all.

There’s nothing glamourous about being squished in between strangers in your seat, mediocre airplane food, or watching a movie an inch away from your face because the front passenger decided to recline their chair back into your lap.

But worse than all of that is what air travel does to your skin.

Travel is inherently stressful to your skin because of all the dry air. Whenever the environment is moisture-free (as with recirculated air in a plane cabin), the air actually draws moisture from wherever it can, including the skin. Dry skin will tend to get drier, and oily skin will get even oilier to compensate for dehydration.

Either way, you’re in for a breakout.

But that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s a peek into the less glamourous side of the overrated jetset life.

Woe #1: Dry Cabin Air

Your skin’s first beef with flying is the dry cabin air.

The cabin pressure and humidity levels on airplanes are pretty different than what we are used to. Typically, skin is comfortable when the humidity is between 40 to 70 percent. However, most airplane cabins are at about 20 percent – and that’s less than half of what we are used to.

So along with that lack of humidity, comes a dip in the hydration level of your skin on a plane. In other words, the pressurised environment of a plane is totally unnatural and completely sucks the moisture out of your skin, leaving you dehydrated with cracked lips and dry, flaky skin.

[caption id="attachment_24657" align="alignnone" width="500"] Image Credit: ICanHasCheeseburger.com[/caption]

Woe #2: UV Damage

Beyond that, flying at high altitudes also puts you closer to the sun so the ultraviolet (UV) damage is at its greatest. Since airplane windows do not have the protective ability to filter out these harmful rays, it makes you all the more susceptible to cosmic radiation every time you fly.

Believe it or not, an hour of flight time is akin to spending about Image Credit: The Odyssey Online[/caption]

Sun exposure is actually one of the key reasons for the skin to lose its elasticity. The sun’s powerful rays damage skin cells, which over time, can accelerate the effects of ageing. Ultimately, it breaks down your collagen and elastin fibres; and without these supporting connective tissue, your skin loses strength and flexibility. Skin then begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely.

So if UV rays = ageing skin and wrinkles, then that makes UV light an absolute enemy in the quest for younger-looking skin. This also debunks the common misconception that Woe #3: Cabin Altitude

The barometric pressure during a typical plane ride is equivalent to what we would feel while standing atop an 8,000-foot mountain. Apparently, the higher the altitude, the less blood flows to the skin, which causes the Also, as our blood absorbs less oxygen at such high altitudes, it contributes to feelings of fatigue such as dizziness, sleepiness, and a general lack of mental sharpness.

So yes, if you ever feel sleepy in-flight, it’s certainly no thanks to the cushioned airplane seats.

Woe #4: Water Retention

Inactivity as well as too much salt intake (thanks, airport snacks) during a long flight leads to water retention, which causes facial puffiness.

[caption id="attachment_24659" align="alignnone" width="500"]

To help prevent your face from bloating, you can get up from your seat to walk down the aisle once an hour.

Or if you are trapped in a window seat, with sleeping passengers on either side, you can simply stretch and lift your legs up and down, rotating them in circles periodically. These can help to mobilise the excess fluid.

Woe #5: Jet Lag And Lack Of Sleep

Medically referred to as ‘desynchronosis’, jet lag is part and parcel of long haul flights. When you are constantly flying to and fro, you are often straddling between time zones and this can cause your circadian rhythm to get interrupted, triggering a severe lack of sleep.

Whether you’re actually travelling through time zones or just skimping on sleep during your trip, it can have a huge impact on your skin.

Not only does it add to the dehydration, but lack of sleep can also cause Image Credit: Giphy[/caption]

SOS — Save Our Skin!

Although it’s clear that traveling takes a toll on our skin, we can’t possibly forego flying altogether. Dry and dull skin, facial puffiness, dark circles and eye bags — all these can easily be prevented as long as you spare the effort to prep your skin before and during flight.

But what about wrinkles? Fighting wrinkles is not as easy as zapping zits and there’s no over-the-counter medication for it, so what would be the best solution?

You can do no wrong seeking a trusted professional’s help. The treatment is quick, non-invasive and effective. This procedure can also double up as a preventative step — getting Botox done early enough can help prevent wrinkles from forming deep lines.

You will be in the good hands of Dr. Ivan Puah, who is the medical director of Amaris B. Clinic and the appointed doctor-trainer by Allergan Singapore. With more than 15 years of dermatological and beauty aesthetics experience, he is the go-to doctor if you need to plump up your skin, smoothen out telltale signs of ageing, or zap those annoying zits away.

So give yourself one less thing to frown about, and try to inject some youth back into your face (pun fully intended).

Unconventional Valentine’s Date Night Ideas For Couples Who Are Tired of Clichés

If 11 November (11.11) is the day for singles, then 14 February is the day for couples, and with it comes a whole slew of shopping opportunities. Valentine’s Day in Singapore is not something to be trifled with, and we have the stats to prove it.

In February 2015, a Groupon survey done on 20,694 of its global subscribers found that Singaporeans are among the top 3 spenders for Valentine’s Day, with .

That’s a lot of money, and apparently, most of it is channelled towards experiences, rather than the conventional dinners and flowers. So, we took the liberty of compiling a list of unconventionally interesting Valentine’s gifts that you and your partner will enjoy.

1. Be My (Foodie) Valentine

[caption id="attachment_24484" align="alignnone" width="700"]

Changi Airport – the pride and joy of Singapore.

Yesterday, its status as a world class airport was further confirmed as Changi Airport was once again crowned Best Airport in the World. This would be the eighth time it’s won the honour!

While most, if not all of us Singaporeans have been to Changi Airport at some point, not all of us have explored it enough to know everything it has to offer.

Whether you’re stuck in transit or have arrived at the airport hours too early for your flight, here are 9 exciting things you can do at the airport to pass the time!

1. Entertainment Deck

The Entertainment Deck is the place to go for a group with diverse interests. You’ll find more than just a few sets of Xbox 360s and Playstation 3s, a Wii room, and even a LAN cafe you can use for free!

6 Products So Thin They Will Make You Feel Fat

As mankind increasingly becomes more adept at using technology to solve problems, it is evident that we are quite interested in making certain things skinnier and other things bigger.

For example, television and mobile phone screens have become bigger. Some smartphones have screens the size of tablet devices! But for everything else, downsizing on thickness seems to be the goal.

Here are six products so thin they will make you feel like you’re the one who needs a diet:

Super thin laptop

In today’s day and age, work doesn’t stop at your desk. Often, it follows you around and appears in the form of emails and spreadsheets waiting to be looked at. If you have to carry around a laptop for work, school or even travel, why not go for something thin and practically weightless?

Laptops are so thin and light nowadays that they look perfectly chic. You could throw it into a purse and not have to worry about lugging it around in a huge, bulky computer bag! Finally, you’ll be the envy of all your friends while you pretend that you’re not browsing SGAG or watching Wah!Banana on YouTube.

Super thin Oreo

Call us purists but we are still not convinced that Oreo Thins, which entered the market in 2015, are any better than the thicker, original Oreos.

A plus point? You can probably pop the whole thing in your mouth during class or meeting without anyone noticing. Sans the chewing, of course.

Super thin condom

When asked to use a condom during sex, some men might use the excuse that the rubber makes intercourse feel less pleasurable, given that it is thick and reduces the sensation.

Well, that is no reason to not use protection and have safe sex, which translate to preventing unwanted pregnancies and the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease.

Thanks to Durex, thin condoms are a dime a dozen these days. One particular condom you can try out if the thickness of the condom is an issue is the Durex Fetherlite brand, which touts greater sensitivity.

With such thinness, this condom will enhance sexual pleasure while keeping both parties protected.

Super thin watch

Watches used to be clunky, thick, and cool. Who remembers the good old Casio, G-Shock, and Baby-G watches that came with a variety of cool features and buttons? Some watches even doubled up as calculators!

However, watches nowadays have gotten so thin, they’re probably no thicker than our 20cent coin.

Super thin tracking device

If you’re a scatterbrain, and have to resort to asking your friends and family 12 times a day if they have seen your keys/wallet/phone, try Tile, a Bluetooth-enabled tracking device.

While it used to be a little bit chunkier, Tile has since remodelled its tracking device to fit most wallets and laptops! Its slimmer version, aptly named Tile Slim, weighs 9.3 grams and is only 2.44mm thick.

P.S. Do not try and stick this onto your significant other in order to track their location!

Super thin e-book reader

The great thing about e-book readers is that you can have all the books in the world at your fingertips without needing to carry them all in your backpack. The Amazon Kindle Oasis is the company’s thinnest and lightest e-book reader available, with a thickness of 3.4 mm to 8.5 mm depending on the point of measurement.

With such a thin Kindle, you can now read on the MRT without infringing on your fellow commuter’s space!

All that said, there is still something about thick novels and fat wallets that exude old-school charm. Did we miss out anything that is so thin, it would make you feel fat? Let us know!
