The Tiny Roaster

Ice Cold Brew($5)

Fatcat Ice Cream Bar

Faux Passionfruit

The Prettiest And Most Elaborate Customised Cakes We Have Ever Seen In Singapore!

No birthday party or wedding these days seem complete without a beautifully adorned cake. And this comes at no surprise. In recent years, cake stores here in Singapore have been smashing expectations with their lavish designs and carefully produced cakes that promise to leave all your guests wowed.

And if price is a huge concern, fret not! We’ve done our research for you. Presenting Discover SG’s list of custom ‘cakeries’ (cake + bakery = an interesting new word learnt!) that promises to be both pocket friendly (within careful means, of course!) and visually entrancing. You’ll be so much in awe by the end of this post that we bet you either want to give baking a go, or you’re running to the store to make a purchase.

1) Mad About Sucre

Mad About Sucre bakes some of the most gorgeous cakes here in Singapore, period. This cakery marries some of the best French confection techniques with the most glorious British designs. Think clean, white-tiered cakes with an intense focus on the sublime details and features that inevitably stand out.

With cakes baked by co-owner and Le Corden Blue graduate Lena Chan, quality is something that you can certainly be assured of. As a promise to their customers, the cakery does not use pre-mixes and artificial flavorings, and instead only uses healthy ingredients like organic flour and raw unbleached sugar.

If you’re not too interested in full sized cakes, you could head down to their brick and mortar store to try some of their fresh baked pastries and delicacies as well.

Mad About Sucre
Address: 27 Teo Hong Road Singapore 088334
Opening Hours:
Tuesday to Saturday: 1230 – 2230
Sunday: 1230 – 1700

2) Febspantry

Some passions blossom out of curiosity, as did Feby’s (pronounced Phoebe) love for baking. Astoundingly, the owner and head baker of Febspantry learnt everything about the trade without any professional help or expertise. It all started with a heap of curiosity and tons of trial and error.

Feby’s immense talent has allowed her to produce some of the most gorgeous floral cake designs. She has a keen eye for colors, as she beautifully pairs the different floral designs and patterns against a white buttercream cake base. Each single tier cake painstakingly takes about 4-6 hours to decorate, which sure makes the cake cutting session a whole lot tougher now.

Aside from her custom-made cakes, Feby also bakes gorgeously designed cupcakes and occasionally, cookies.

Their moist and tender butter cakes are paired with Italian meringue buttercream, and are both available in an assortment of flavours. Even though Crummb Cakes may be a little on the pricier end, do know that a basic 3-tier cake is able to feed a party of 140!

7) My Sister Bakes

My Sister Bakes started out in a little kitchen in a Melbourne apartment, as Esther began working on ways to use her basket full of freshly picked strawberries. It was then that she made her first Strawberry Crumble Cake, and slowly began exploring different cake recipes.

The relatively new store specialises in buttercream (which is a type of icing or filling used inside cakes) cakes that is available in both their classic and signature flavours. Some of their classic flavours include chocolate and red velvet, while their best selling and more popular signature flavours include chocolate salted caramel, matcha, milo dino and earl grey.

If you’d like a little taste of these delicious sounding goodies, you can head down to their physical store located near Tai Seng station! You’d definitely be wow-ed by the desserts that they offer.

They can also customise cakes of any design – from the more floral and rustic looking ones, to even ones with a cartoon design that are best for kids. I’m absolutely in love with their ombre cakes that are topped with either caspier or baby’s breath flowers.

18 Unmistakable Signs That You’re A Hard Core Coffee Addict

Coffee…they lift you up in the morning. Aromatic, rich in flavour, and the list goes on. Coffee makes you a nicer person so you won’t glare at that person who schedules a meeting on Friday at 9am. And once you start your every day with a mandatory cup, it’s only a matter of time till you experience the most severe and intense headache of your life when you decide to ‘maybe skip coffee’ on one morning.

If that sounds like you, you’re in a dead serious relationship with coffee. How serious? Read on to find out.

1. The reason why you wake up in the morning – your first cuppa

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="465"] source: imcrownzero.tumblr.com[/caption]

The reason why you go to bed – so you can wake up to a cup of freshly brewed coffee the next morning.

2. This is you before and after coffee

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="395"] source: Pinterest.com[/caption]

From grumpy to friendly. Coffee sure helps escalate things quickly…in a good way.

3. One cup is never enough… never!

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500"] source: cheezburger.tumblr.com[/caption]

They say two is better than one and if I can have three, why not?

4. You can rule the world…but first, coffee.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] source: Hopip.tumblr.com[/caption]

Meeting at 10am, lunch with clients, conference call at 3pm, task deadline at 5pm…sure, bring it on (with lots of coffee)!

5. You know the origins of your beans and if they are fairly traded or not

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="540"] source: pixabay.com[/caption]

Ethiopia, Kenya, Columbia, Brazil, Peru, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama… your Geography knowledge has improved. Thanks to coffee.

6. You know the difference between light, medium, and dark roast

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="556"] source: Pixabay.com[/caption]

Contrary to popular belief, light roast actually contains the highest amount of caffeine.

7. Your coffee mug game is STRONG

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BDcJBvRN6Jt/?tagged=mugs&hl=en[/embed]

Because coffee mug is a statement. ’nuff said.

8. You turn into a professional photographer when it comes to latte art

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="536"] source: dsgnme.co[/caption]

Whether it’s a pour style tulip, rosetta or angel wings, you have a photo collection of them.

9. Watching your barista pour steamed milk feels so satisfying that you can watch it all day everyday

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500"] source: tumblr.com[/caption]

YAS YAS YAS! Just look at how the crema and the microfoam come together…it’s 100% Chemistry.

10. You get offended by bad coffee

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="492"] source: rednewsom.tumblr.com[/caption]

Yet bad coffee is better than no coffee at all. You’ll still drink it anyway.

11. You count on coffee when you have a deadline to meet

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="400"] source: nintendoage.com[/caption]

Need to finish your assignment tonight? Drink coffee. Need to stay up late to study? Drink coffee.

12. You follow coffee dad on Twitter

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="467"] source: source: thecottagenest.blogspot.com[/caption]

I’ll have my Dolce Gusto with this, brew coffee with that, instant coffee with this cute one… Maybe I’ll just stick to this free mug I got from buying toothpaste.

14. You make coffee cubes

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BDOtTI4plA-/?tagged=coffeecubes&hl=en[/embed]

One section for white coffee, one section for black coffee, and another one for mocha.

15. You have your very own ‘Coffeelogy’ that you live by

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="512"] source: etsy.com[/caption]

Espresso yourself, better latte than never, stay grounded, take life one sip at a time…and the list goes on.

16. Iced coffee (and cold brew) is always a good idea

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="325"] source: The Comeback HBO[/caption]

Considering how how the weather is lately, iced coffee is the next lemonade.

17. You tried to quit coffee and it was more the most intense 24 hours of your life…even more intense than Jack Bauer in that 24 TV Series

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500"] source: devopsreactions.tumblr.com[/caption]

Nope, definitely not going back to the ‘caffeine free’ days.

18. Coffee shaming? Yeah whatever. You don’t give a damn when people say you drink wayyyy too much coffee.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="497"] source: PerzeHilton.tumblr.com[/caption]

Why do people get so worked up about the amount of coffee you consume? Go and care for other causes like poverty or fair trade or something else.

Do you know someone who’s a coffee addict? Or are you a coffee addict? How many of these do you relate to?

Singapore’s Very First Hello Kitty Cafe Is Opening In Singapore And It’s 24Hrs!

The wait is finally over.

Singapore’s first ever Hello Kitty Cafe, Hello Kitty Orchid Garden, is opening at Changi Airport Terminal 3 this coming May. And superb news, it’s not a temporary pop-up stall. It’s going to be a permanent cafe — and a 24-hour one at that.

[caption id="attachment_4233" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image credit: Changi Airport[/caption]

According to Lady Iron Chef, the cafe will be adorned with a complementary mix of flowers and greens that will, no doubt, add a splash of pretty colour to the place. The full menu hasn’t been revealed yet, but word is, we can expect an all-day breakfast meals and desserts with a tinge of local flavour.

Besides satisfying our tummies, the cafe will also feature an exciting range of merchandise like postcards, plush toys, DIY plant kits, and tea blends. Is it just me, or does it feel like Changi Airport wants Hello Kitty fanatics to burn a colossal hole in their pocket?

One might wonder, with the launch of the cafe, does this mean that we’re going to have a Hello Kitty-themed hospital in the not too distant future? Only time will tell.

The Best High Tea Spots For All Occasions That Will Leave You Feeling Blissful!

From traditional English high tea sets to Peranakan-inspired ones complete with rainbow kueh lapis, we’ve rounded up what we reckon are eight of Singapore’s best high tea spots. You’re in for a real treat!

1. For retro vibes

https://www.instagram.com/p/9Lh04yra66/?tagged=houseofdempsey

House @ Dempsey’s revamped Hi-Tea buffet (SGD30++) works up a treat with deviled eggs, bite-sized pizzas and all kinds of fries – there’s your standard truffle option, and taro-flavoured ones that are strangely addictive. Also, score 10% off your bill when you come dressed in your vintage best!

https://www.instagram.com/p/87qBoTra44/?tagged=houseofdempsey

3. For a quiet escape

We have a secret. There is a way to avoid the chatty tai tais who spend their afternoons at TWG or Marmalade Pantry.

Take a short getaway to The Knolls at Capella on Sentosa, surrounded by lush greenery and an oasis of serenity. Its afternoon tea set (SGD39.90++) comes with miniature tarts – think fresh berries and a flambéed meringue – and delicate slices of chocolate mousse cake, amongst other things. A selection of Gryphon teas is also available for your picking.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BCcL9tsgQ_w/?taken-by=capellasin

The Knolls at Capella
High Tea Hours: 3.00pm – 5.00pm daily
Note: Its high tea sets are served in Cassia Restaurant on weekends
1 The Knolls, Sentosa Island
Tel: +65 6591 5000

4. For seriously fancy savoury tarts

Located on the other end of Sentosa is Woo Bar, with its fancy high tea set (from SGD65++ for two pax) served in a three-tiered birdcage.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BCocnSUqXxv/?taken-at=306289238

Bite-sized treats include tarts with foie gras ganache and caramelised onion, served alongside sweets like macarons and warm scones. It isn’t cheap, we’ll warrant, but it gives you an excuse to explore W Hotel.

5. For an unconventional afternoon tea
[caption id="attachment_3825" align="alignnone" width="492"] Credit: If your childhood involved rainbow kueh lapis, you’d probably remember how much fun it was peeling each layer one by one.

A Peranakan high tea set at Pacific Marketplace (SGD38++) comes with your favourite colourful kueh, plus the usual suspects: kueh pie tee, Nyonya chicken curry, and apam balik – better known as those delicious peanut-sugar pancakes typically found in hawker centres.

Pacific Marketplace
High Tea Hours: 2 – 6pm
Pan Pacific Singapore
7 Raffles Boulevard, Level 1

6. For the molecular gastronomy dessert geeks

[caption id="attachment_4106" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Credit: Nevertoosweetforme.com[/caption]

For anyone who loves a sweet treat, but don’t want it to be too sinful. In our saturated, high tea-lovin’ market rampant with tai tais, tai tai wannabes and everything in-between, 2amDessert Bar holds its own – and we’re huge fans.

Standouts from its high tea set (SGD52++) are the BBQ lo mai gai and popping candy chocolate moelleux.

2am Dessert Bar
High Tea Hours: Tue – Sun, 3 – 6pm
21A Lorong Liput, Holland Village

7. For the nature lovers

Sitting within the Flower Dome at Gardens By The Bay is Pollen, with its lush greenery and plenty of natural light.

Its afternoon tea set (SGD38++) is a resplendent mix of open-faced sandwiches (think chicken liver parfait with verjus gel and cocoa nibs) and banana cake topped with salted caramel Chantilly cream (a fancier name for whipped cream). Reservations recommended.

Anti:dote is an Instagram lover’s dream: high tea (SGD45++) begins with your choice of truffled scrambled eggs or dim sum, followed by an impressive selection of sweets in a white chest of drawers.

It may seem a bit gimmicky, but the food is on point: confit duck rilette with foie gras sandwiches, rose lychee macarons on popsicle sticks, and TWG teas all ‘round.

Be sure to make bookings – it’s strictly by reservation.

Join The Dark Side – 15 Weird Black Dishes In Singapore That Are Actually Edible

Gone are the days when a food turns out black, it means it is chaota (burnt) and inedible.

We daresay that black is the new sexy of food. Yes, it’s oddly attractive, satisfying and somehow even appealing.

The popularity of black coloured food probably began with Squid Ink pasta and maybe Risotto. Now, Squid Ink is widely used for everything edible, even desserts! If you are looking to add some colour (yes black is a colour, and pun unintended) to your palate, why not try some of these lesser known, out-of-this-world black creations?

1. Dolcetto By Basilico

Squid Ink Panini with King Crab and Prawns

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/4gSeDFj5MF/?taken-at=244179964[/embed]

We never knew black sandwiches could look so appealing. This Squid Ink Panini with King Crab and Prawns is stuffed with generous servings of crab meat and prawns fillings which complement the warm, slightly crispy bread on the outside.

Squid Ink sandwiches should definitely be a thing!

2. Black Squid Ink Macaron with Mascarpone Cheese and Smoked Salmon

Also, another creative and novel creation is the Black Squid Ink Macaron with Mascarpone Cheese and Smoked Salmon – MUST TRY!

Who says macarons can’t be savoury?

Sounds #craycray but this Squid Ink pasta inspired macaron is weirdly unique yet surprisingly delicious! 😛

3. Black Curry – Image credit: Calvin Timo[/caption]

Your first reaction towards this would probably be a disgusted “Ewww what is this? Engine oil ah?” but let us reassure you. It is food. The Japanese Black Curry tastes rather similar to normal Japanese curry and is perhaps a bit tastier and slightly saltier. Give it a try and soon you will start pouring it generously all over your rice, noodles, chicken, sushi…and probably everything served at Kiseki Japanese buffet. Yumz.

Okay let’s be honest, we would all agree that this just looks like some badly chaota (burnt) fish and looks slightly unappetising. But let’s not judge a fish by its batter. We’re giving The Pipe District credit for its creativity and effort! 🙂

6. Charcoal Battered Onion Rings

If you are trying the Fish & Chips, why not go all black and order their Charcoal Battered Onion Rings as well?

Definitely not your regular milkshake, these monster shakes are OTT (over the top) as hell. You probably shouldn’t be drinking (and eating) too much of them, but hey, no harm feasting your eyes on these photo-worthy milkshakes, right?

The House of Robert Timms

Their oversized macarons have already been well-documented on Instagram, but The House of Robert Timms is also a popular spot for their ‘Over The Top Milkshakes’.

Hot favourites include the Strawberry Whoopee and the Vanilla Bon Bon. The former is topped with Fruit Loops, chocolate sauce and rainbow sprinkles, while the latter is a shake that’s easily recognisable with a full-sized donut sitting on top.

The Lab SG

This halal cafe can be found along the hipster area around Masjid Sultan. Known for their experimental menu of creative drinks and food, The Lab SG is getting creative with piling stuff up on their milkshakes too.

Highlights include the rich Nutella shake, the Strawberry Cheesecake shake with nostalgic gem biscuits and Fruit Loops, and the Durian Caramel shake drizzled with smooth caramel sauce and topped with pretzels.

The Refinery

The Refinery combines a craft workshop, a restaurant, and a bar. This high-ceiling, airy space is known for its minimalistic decor, though their fancy milkshakes are anything but minimal.

Of note is the Chendol Mando, filled with the local flavours of gula melaka, red bean, green jelly, ondeh ondeh, and coconut cream. The Mr Nutella and Avocado Gau are also well-known favourites.

The Benjamins

Drawing attention to their fancy milkshakes since their days as Benjamin Brown, the revamped cafe and bistro, The Benjamins reopened late last year, continuing to serve up some of the best monster shakes in town.

Hot picks include the Nutella Banana Milkshake with mini pretzels and chocolate drizzle, the Black and White which is a rich concoction of all things chocolatey, along with the Old School Milkshake topped with a ton of Singaporean childhood snacks.

Cake Spade

With a name that rhymes with a certain designer label, the elaborate shakes at Cake Spade are pretty much designer milkshakes too. Or rather, ‘Cakeshakes™’, as the cafe has named them (yes, complete with the trademark).

The Unicone Cakeshake is a standout pick, promising a sugar rush and an Instagram session with its rainbow sprinkles and cotton candy. Of course, Cake Spade offers other cafe fare on the menu too, so customers can have their Cakeshake with even more cake, or wash it down with some tea or coffee.

1. Drury Lane

Drury Lane: 94 Tg Pagar Rd, Singapore 088515

2. Ciel Patisserie

Ciel Patisserie: 124 Hougang Ave 1, 530124

3. Bread Yard

[caption id="attachment_3518" align="alignnone" width="1024"]
[caption id="attachment_3521" align="alignnone" width="1024"]

Bread Yard: 1 Fusionopolis Place, #01-23/24 Galaxis, 138632

4. One Man Coffee

One Man Coffee:
215R Upper Thomson Road, Singapore 574349
1 Maju Avenue #B1-23/24 myVillage@Serangoon Garden Singapore 556679
4 Fusionopolis Way #01-15 Kinesis Singapore 138635

5. Clueless Goat

[caption id="attachment_3530" align="alignnone" width="1024"]

The Clueless Goat: 189 Thomson Rd, 307631

6.Tuk Tuk Cha

Tuk Tuk Cha: 3 Temasek Boulevard, #02-605A Suntec City Tower 3, 038983

7. Percolate

Percolate: 136 Bedok North Ave 3, 460136
