Craft Beer Lovers, SG’s First Mikkeller Bar Has Just Opened!

This one’s for the craft beer enthusiasts- Copenhagen’s experimental brewery, and tap bar Druggists, the Mikkeller Bar at Deck features 20 taps pouring out the brand’s exclusive brews.

Mainstays on the tap are the house brews Bugis Brown, Prinsep Pilsner and Waterloo Wit. Apart from those, expect to be surprised by their changing creations – craft beer lovers will no doubt be going back on multiple visits to taste the newest brews of this cult beer brand.

Having amassed a firm following in their hometown of Copenhagen and other cities, we’re sure it won’t take long for Mikkeller to develop a following in our tropical city. If the crowd during their opening is any indication, they’ve already started to gain some cult-beer-loving fans.

According to one Japanese legend, the carp, which swims upwards, is thought to become a dragon as it beats the oncoming current. In the past, and now kept as a tradition, the families of the Samurai warriors would fly koinobori — carp streamers — as a way of honouring their children who are on the battlefield.

In this workshop, you will learn to make koinobori — carp streamers — and design it with stamps and paint. This event will take place on the 21st of May 2016 at 4 PM, and will last for an hour and 30 minutes. No advance registration is needed.

Kumihimo, a traditional Japanese technique of braiding, was previously used by Samurai warriors to lace their armour, and today, people use it for many other functional and decorative purposes! Kuruma Ningyo Puppet Theatre

If you have never seen Japanese puppet theatre, despite previous trips to the Land of the Rising Sun, what are you waiting for? Created more than 150 years ago, at the end of the Edo era, Kuruma Ningyo is a style of puppetry that is considered a National Intangible Folk Custom Cultural Asset of Japan. Plus, before each show, the performers put on a sanbaso, a dance meant to bring luck, success and good bounty to its audience!

With the recent launch of the Hello Kitty and Pompompurin Cafe, and the upcoming launch of the Pokemon Café later this month (limited time period), character-themed cafes here seem to be facing fierce competition. With so many choices, and so little time, which cafe should you visit? Without further ado, we analyse and compare both cafes, so you can prioritise which to visit!

Pompompurin Cafe

Fans of Sanrio would probably have heard of this café which opened a few weeks back. Like what its name implies, the Pompompurin café’s décor and food are designed after the yellow canine – from the pancakes to the caramel pudding down to the seats and placemats.

Aside from the limited edition Pompompurin merchandise, selected dishes like the signature Bagel’s Special: Pancake Tower ($21.99, pictured bottom right) comes with a Pompompurin mug which you can take home!

Hello Kitty fans rejoice! Now, there is no need to fly overseas to get your Hello Kitty fix because you have a Hello Kitty cafe at your doorstep. And it’s open 24 hours to boot!

Hello Kitty merchandise are displayed and available for purchase. There’s also a limited edition Hello Kitty plushie, which is the first worldwide to feature a double bow, up for grabs (500 pieces only at $49.90 each). Custom Hello Kitty-inspired tea blends ($38.90), and grow-it-yourself plant kits ($34.50) are sold along with other Hello Kitty merchandise.

Since this café is under Europar Specialty Restaurants (S) Pte Ltd, which is under the subsidiary of ABR Holdings Limited who owns Swensen’s, the gelatos ($6 per scoop) and soft serves ($4.90) are a must try. They are my personal favourites out of the whole menu!

This Garden-themed Sanrio café is open around the clock (the first in the world) so night owls now have a new hang out spot!

Verdict: Having analysed and been to both cafes, we’ll have to say that each has its own pros and cons. Pompompurin Cafe is certainly very family friendly and great for kids. Their adorable food will coax and please even the fussiest child to eat. On the other hand, Hello Kitty’s decor and menu is more suited to adults, and their location at Changi Airport makes it convenient to stop for a visit and a bite. Conclusion? It’s a draw!

6 Best Places In The West For Alcohol For Your Friday Chill Night

“West side, best side” — that’s the mantra of all Westies (as opposed to their rivals who live in the East of Singapore who love to chant “East side, beast side…”).

Although those who do not live in ‘The West’ generally reckon it to be the land of IMM and perpetual construction projects, with some even joking that it’s basically a different country altogether, we’re here to prove that there are great bars and pubs in the West region of Singapore to get your drink from.

One of the many things most Singaporean students can agree on is that we can never study where we are supposed to study. Libraries

Libraries are one of the best places to go to if you’re mugging. There’re more than enough power plugs and tables to go around, the noise levels are kept to a minimum and the environment is generally clean and cosy. All libraries are air-conditioned and most of them have food places just around the corner, so you can grab a quick bite when you get distracted hungry. The library @ esplanade is one of the quietest libraries in Singapore. The Esplanade, being a hub for performing arts and theatre, is frequented by very few people on weekdays, thus making the library a very peaceful place to study in. You won’t have to worry about being swarmed by large groups of school kids talking at the top of their voices, or toddlers running rampant among the bookshelves. The National Library is the largest library in Singapore. It houses both the Central Public Library and the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library. [GIVEAWAY] Dose! – The Must Visit Café For Your Daily Dose Of Coffee

That’s right, it’s Dose! (with the exclamation mark). Given the owner’s enthusiasm for coffee and food, we have to say, the use of this punctuation is pretty apt.

Tucked along Tyrwhitt Road, this unassuming café is one of the latest additions to this hipster area. With its specialty coffee, varied food menu and cosy space, all you need is a good book or a laptop and you’ll never want to leave this café. We swear.

With Chye Seng Huat Hardware across the street and Tiramisu Hero down the road, competition is more than stiff for this humble café. Like you, we were just as curious about its location. How does Dose! intend to have its competition beat? Turns out, instead of instagram-worthy décor or any hipster related gimmick, this café goes back to basic by placing its emphasis on its menu.

First up, we have Dose!’s specialty coffee. The Candyman Espresso Blend consists of a mixture of three beans; the Ethiopian, Colombian, and Guatemalan beans. With its light-medium roast, the coffee was pleasantly smooth with, dare we say, zero acidity. We had the Latte ($6) and its flavour is slightly chocolate-y and malty at the same time. If you’re not a kopi gao person, the café’s specialty coffee is definitely for you. Usual coffee aside, Dose! also offers two particularly intriguing drinks; the Black Latte and Miloso.

The Black Latte ($6) is a bamboo charcoal infused coffee and is entirely black. For those who are worried about the charcoal overpowering the taste of coffee, fear not. You can definitely still taste the coffee whilst enjoying this unique drink. As for the Miloso ($6), it’s simply a combination of Milo and Espresso. We’re not sure about you, but this drink reminds us of a less thick Mocha. To be honest, we’ll take the Miloso over the usual Mocha any day.

When it comes to food, Dose! certainly does not skimp on quality and quantity. Jumping right off the menu will be the popular Full Dosage #2, Savory Waffle-Wich and Chili Crab Pasta. With its crispy-skinned chorizo, cheese bratwurst, and fluffy croissant, Full Dosage #2 ($13.90) makes a delightfully wholesome brunch. Flavourful sausages aside, we simply cannot get over how awesomely crispy and fluffy the croissant is. The secret, we’re told, is how the croissant is air fried instead of deep-fried. We’re telling you guys, c’est manifique!

For its signature Chili Crab Pasta ($13.90), the chef has meticulously included some mantous to complete the dish. In the pasta sauce, you’ll find chunks of authentic crab meat (that’s right, chunks) and mushrooms. For those who aren’t exactly fans of spicy food, fair warning: this dish may be a little too hot for you to handle so do consult the café’s staff before placing your order! Also, do note that this dish is only available on Wednesday!

For a cosy coffee spot, we thought Dose! has a relatively extensive menu. That is until we heard that the café is planning on introducing more mouth-watering dishes such as the Kong Bak Waffle-Wich, and Laksa Seafood Pasta. We’re not sure about you, but given its track record with food, we’re already anticipating the realisation of these new dishes.

For desserts, we’d recommend Charcoal Waffles with ice cream ($11), and Dose!’s handmade Tiramisu. To our pleasant surprise, the Earl Grey ice cream for our waffle is topped with teeny lavender buds that really complemented the flavor of the ice cream. The waffle is appropriately crispy and not too doughy, so yes to more Charcoal Waffles! As for the Tiramisu, all we gotta say is that fans of baileys will really dig this dessert.

Hey you! Are you someone who spends most of your days indoors? Be it in school (poly & uni students) or at work, face it, we spent most of our time in an air-conditioned room!

(But Singapore’s so hot!)

Yup, I feel you, but shouldn’t we be making the most out of our limited time outdoors? Although it seems that our climate is like a curse, but other times, it can be a real blessing.

Especially after dark when Singapore gets amazing! There’s no better way to enjoy the nightlife than to chow down on delectable gastronomy while enjoying a chilled drink or two. Throw in a couple of hot tunes and there you have it, a night to remember!

Friends, I bring you, alfresco bars! What makes them different from other restaurants is that they provide a totally unique experience. Whether it’s celebrating a special occasion, a romantic dinner, or corporate gatherings, alfresco bars are your go-tos.

1. Timbre @ Arts House

Everyone should be familiar with the iconic and premier Timbre Group’s chain of live music restaurants. Timbre @ The Arts House is perhaps the most “atas” of them all. Enjoy the picturesque view of the Singapore River and hey, don’t forget to snap a picture with the statue of Singapore’s founding father, Sir Stamford Raffles.

Located opposite SMU, Timbre @ The Substation is the older and more rustic brother of Timbre @ Arts House. Tucked away from the city crowd, rest your eyes on the idyllic teak furnishing and foliage, and drift away to tranquility and melodic tunes.

Timbre’s menus are nearly identical, but of course, there are popular dishes. For something light, there’s the Crispy Pork Belly ($16), and Timbre Chicken Wings ($14). Who can forget the famous Roasted Duck Pizza ($21), deliciously topped with hoisin sauce and crispy popiah skin. Don’t forget to drown them down with your favorite alcohol selection!

Nestled in one of Singapore’s most exciting and entertaining nightlife district, Holland Village, Wala Wala Café Bar is often packed. Who can blame them? The ambience is always cheerful and relaxed, making it popular with foreigners. Food favourites include Spicy Blacken Wings aka Wala Buffalo Wings ($14), and Curly Potato Wedges ($7). Did we mention that the alcohol selection is really extensive as well?

Spruce deserves a spot on this list because of its location. Located at the former Bukit Timah Fire Station (yep, it’s true), Spruce serves as the perfect hideout to escape the bright lights of the city. Be sure to try their original creations – Spruce Hot Wings ($18), served with homemade hot sauce, and the succulent Spruce Burger ($19). (Psst, there’s free parking!)

My personal favourite place for a night of drinks with friends, Five Tapas @ Cuppage, is popular for their five dollar tipples (for the uninitiated, that’s liquor), and sing-along tunes. The only downside is that it’s always crowded and gets relatively humid. But hey, for tipples at such low prices, I have no complaints. My favourites from the food menu include Stuffed Mushrooms ($5), Spicy Pork Belly Cubes ($5), and Beer Battered Fish & Chips ($18).

6. Going Om

Inspired by Hindu temples while travelling in the Himalayas, founders Barry and Oliver has delivered an almost meditative experience in their quaint little alfresco bar. Tucked in the corner of eclectic Haji Lane within the confines of a refurbished shophouse, Going Om is perhaps the most artsy and unique in this list. I personally vouch for the Pear N Apple Crumble ($7), which is heavenly. Fellow Ommies unite!

Offering a million-dollar view of neighbouring Sentosa, The Queen & Mangosteen is the quintessential gourmet British alfresco pub. With an unpretentious menu of appetising British food with an Asian twist, this chic establishment is the ideal spot to put your feet up after a long day of shopping and activities in Vivocity. Unlike other bars in this list, it’s also great for the kids! Must try: Fish & Chips ($26), and Shepherd’s Pie ($20).

Guys, guys, relax! This isn’t CMPB (Central Manpower Base), this is CM-PB. An acronym for Contemporary Melting-Pot & Bar, this café-bar-bistro is set against the evergreen scenery of Dempsey Hill in a bungalow setting. Albeit dishes are on the pricier side, the Truffle Fries ($15) is one of the best in Singapore. For an all-day breakfast selection, try the Eggs on Request ($24).

Situated near East Coast Park, Mel’s Place offers much needed reprieve after a day of exhausting activities and festivities. I’ve heard that they’ve revamped the main building and furnished it with a stylish new look. Upon setting foot in the bar, Mel’s Place welcomes you with a Hawaiian-ish décor. Also, from the grapevine are rave reviews for their Bangers & Mash ($18), a duo of sausages rested on mash potatoes with Mirepoix Sauce. Yummy!

Boasting a stunning skyline of the Marina Bay Sands, Mad Men Attic Bar is fast gaining more prominence. Located in the concrete jungle of Singapore’s CBD, this place is highly beloved by white-collared workers after a hard day’s toil. Add to that a charming view of commercial skyscrapers, there’s no better word to describe this alfresco bar than “wow”. Tuck into delicious nibbles such as Luncheon Meat Fries ($12), Mini Beef Burgers ($12), and the Chili Cheese Dog ($14).

Are you an enthusiastic adrenaline junkie, constantly looking for something fun to do? You might just be the perfect candidate Bounce Singapore is looking for! Here’s an opportunity to work at the world’s best indoor adventure park.

Casting Call

The very first indoor adventure park in Singapore is having a casting (also known as hiring or recruitment) call on 28th and 29th April 2016. They’re looking to recruit energetic and outgoing team members to join the Bounce Tribe!

Bounce Singapore

Originating from Melbourne in 2012, Bounce Inc is an international sensation that has redefined gravity across the globe. Their park locations include South Africa, Hong Kong, Thailand, Europe, Abu Dhabi, and more.

This epic urban playground consists of interconnected trampolines, Freerun Terrain Park (like the one on Ninja Warrior Mount Midoriyama), and “Leap of Faith” – jump on a raised platform and leap out to catch hold of the trapeze. There are all in all, 3 areas in the park. The areas are based on interests and levels of difficulty. There’s something for everyone – adults, fitness enthusiasts, youths, and kids.

Not to worry, the park is safe as all hard surfaces are replaced with circus-grade padding, giant air bags, and springs.

Bounce Singapore will be opening their doors this June. In anticipation of the grand opening, they are hosting a recruitment unlike any other. Aside from being able to demonstrate your skills and charisma, auditionees will be given the exclusive opportunity to enter and have fun at the adventure park before its official opening.
