F45 Training In Singapore: The Most Intense 45 Minutes Of My Life
Somewhere between HIIT and Crossfit lies F45, a 45-minute-long functional training programme that has recently hit our shores early this year. The F45 fitness franchise was first developed in Australia, and has since taken the rest of the world by storm with its fast-paced full-body workout.
F45 – 45-minute-long functional training programme
If you ask me, I’d describe it as HIIT with a little more equipment than you bargained for – expect to get up close at personal with TRX straps, free weights, bosu balls, kettlebells, spin bikes, pull-up bars, rowing machines, prowlers, sledge hammers and sandbags. You could also say that it’s a less intimidating version of Crossfit. The focal point is not to attain a personal record in an overhead squat but to complete as many reps as possible in each station.
[caption id="attachment_11148" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: F45 Tanjong Katong[/caption]Themed exercises
Each day is dedicated to a different workout so if you’re a regular, you can be sure that you’ll be working a different muscle every day of the week. The workouts are themed and playfully named – Brooklyn (MMA- and boxing-based), Romans (resistance-based), Quarterbacks (agility- and pylometrics-based). Saturday’s Hollywood class ends off the week with a bang; combining resistance and cardio exercises across a whopping 27-stations in a mere 45-minutes.
Workouts
These themed exercises are different each week, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised as soon as you step foot into class. At each station, each set of workout ranges from 35- to 55-seconds, with a 10- to 20-seconds rest between sets or stations.
The timings and workout videos will be flashed on a screen at the front of the room for instructional purposes. The trainer, Cat, walks around the room to correct our forms while spurring us on.
My experience
My first class was Quarterbacks. There were three pods and three stations in each pod – that’s nine different stations altogether. Sounds like a manageable handful? Think again. Each station within each pod has to be completed twice (35-seconds workout, 10-seconds rest), and once all nine stations have been completed as a team, we had to repeat everything for one last round.
The workouts for that day included chest press, pull ups, push ups, weighed lunges, kettlebell lifts and prowler pushes – just to name a few.
I started to grow pale as soon as I hit my second round. I felt like I was on the verge of throwing up my non-existent breakfast (maybe I should have had a bite before leaving the house). But I soldiered on. I tried to shift my focus to the specially curated, upbeat F45 playlist in an attempt to drown out the agony I was in.
Before I knew it, the 45mins was over. Even though I found myself hobbling up the stairs as soon as my muscle soreness kicked in, it was totally worth it because I knew that I had emerged stronger.
F45 trainings have proven to be a test of endurance, cardio capacity and strength all at once, so expect to feel aches in parts of your body that you’ve never known could ache. If you’re up for the challenge, F45 offers a two-week trial for you to have a taste of painful pleasure before you commit yourself to become a regular.
Tips!
Tip #1: To avoid disappointment, make a booking online or on the F45 app prior to coming to class. Classes can get pretty full – even the 6.15am ones!
Tip#2: Hop over to Do.Main Bakery (266 Tanjong Katong Road) after class for kickass pastries. It’s only a stone’s throw away!

What’s In This Year’s NDP Goodie Bag? You’ll Be Surprised!
What’s in my bag? NDP 2016 Goodie Bag version
In this article, we’re bringing you the NDP 2016 Goodie Bag version of ‘What’s in my bag?’! From food to National Day Merchandise, and even to.. a trash bag? We will cover all bases to give you the ultimate breakdown of what’s in your 2016 National Day Goodie Bag!
The bag itself
First, let’s start with the actual bag. It comes in our two national colours, red and white, and is made of a translucent plastic. Together with its unique structured frame, this year’s goodie bag seems like a nod towards the future. Talk about futuristic vibes! Moreover, it can be carried 2 ways: as a bag pack or a shoulder bag. The bag also comes with a rain cover. Perfect for Singapore’s temperamental climate! Impressive!
[caption id="attachment_11252" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Image Credit: NDP 2016[/caption]NDP merchandise, with a High-Tech twist!
Moving on to the National Day themed items. National flag, Singapore scarf, patriotic tattoos- check! The goodie bag committee has also thoughtfully included a foldable fan just in case you feel warm during the show. Besides the regulars, this year’s merchandise stars the LED wristband everyone’s been talking about!
The LED wristband flickers brightly in a kaleidoscopic array of colours. It is programmed to match the pumping music and movement of the performers due to its wireless connection. As a result, this high-tech twist allows the audience to be involved in the parade on a whole new level. Audiences simply have to wear it!
[caption id="attachment_11249" align="alignnone" width="3507"] Image Credit: Rebecca Ong[/caption] [caption id="attachment_11247" align="alignnone" width="2795"] Image Credit: Rebecca Ong[/caption]This year’s NDP 2016 Goodie Bag features… a Comic Book?
Next, we move on to the printed materials. NDP 2016 Goodie Bag includes the ever-popular discount voucher booklet in addition to the programme booklet. You can stay informed of the parade’s highlights and find the lyrics to this year’s melodious theme song, “Tomorrow’s Here Today”!
Furthermore, there will be a comic book featuring the parade’s hero, Badang. The artful comic illustrates Badang’s journey and the origin of the Singapore Stone. It makes learning about Singapore’s history, fun especially for the little ones. A must-read, we say!
[caption id="attachment_11251" align="alignnone" width="4288"] Image Credit: Rebecca Ong[/caption]There’s an… NDP trash bag too??
A trash bag seems like the strangest addition to the NDP 2016 Goodie Bag this year. Correction: an NDP themed trash bag! You can play your part in keeping the indoor stadium clean by putting all trash into this sizeable trash bag.
Also, a packet of tissue and wet wipes are included, so you can clean up any mess. Don’t forget the adorable card holder with its friendly reminder about striving for a sustainable Singapore!
[caption id="attachment_11248" align="alignnone" width="4171"] Image Credit: Rebecca Ong[/caption]Makan time!
Finally, let’s have a look at the snacks in the goodie bag! It includes crowd pleasers like double-chocolate Hello Panda, the classic Keng Guan tidbits and Tai Sun peanuts. It won’t be an NDP goodie bag without a bottle of NeWater, just in case you get thirsty. Also, there is a packet of Nin Hom Herbal Candy to soothe tired throats. With these in your goodie bag, no sore throat is going to stop you from bellowing out cheers and songs!
[caption id="attachment_11250" align="alignnone" width="3644"] Image Credit: Rebecca Ong[/caption]To end this article, we’d like to wish Singapore an advance Happy 51st Birthday. Majulah Singapura!

Steam-potting – Better, Healthier & Just As Delicious As Steamboat!
Touted as a healthier way to enjoy steamboat, Hong Kong’s steam-potting trend has hit our shores. Steam-potting is known to be more nutritious as the process (which we will get into in a bit) seals in the ingredients’ nutritional value better than the usual steamboat. If you enjoy a hearty meal with a warm homely fare, you’ll have to check this out.
Instead of the conventional hot pot, steam-potting, as its name suggests, involves steaming the ingredients rather than boiling them.
[caption id="attachment_11412" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: Steam Box Facebook[/caption] [caption id="attachment_11442" align="aligncenter" width="851"] Credit: IG – sgfoodonfoot[/caption]Menu
The menu includes fresh greens, tiger prawns, crabs, wagyu beef, and even dimsum. If you can’t wait for the food to be steamed, order up some century egg congee or the crowd-favourite egg custard buns while the food is cooking.
[caption id="attachment_11413" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: Steam Box Facebook[/caption] [caption id="attachment_11414" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: Steam Box Facebook[/caption] [caption id="attachment_11441" align="aligncenter" width="847"] Credit: IG – mightyfoodie[/caption]Another feature of steam-potting is that the soup is enjoyed last. While the ingredients are being steamed, the natural juices of the food flow to the bottom of the pot, seeping into the rice grains and soup base. This creates a delicious soupy congee that is packed with flavour to end off your meal.

Now, where do I enjoy this pot of goodness, you ask? Head to Steam Box at Serangoon Gardens to have a taste of the steam-potting trend!

Patissez Freakshake: Milkshakes So Sinful, You’ll Feel Guilty For A Lifetime!
Growing up in my family, getting a milkshake in a restaurant was a pretty big deal for a child. It meant that you were being rewarded with a treat of something other than juice or the rare soft drink. Plus, you got to choose the flavour of the milkshake and revel in a cup of vanilla, chocolate or strawberry.
Nowadays, milkshakes are a lot more bold and exciting, especially with the creation of ‘freakshakes’ a few years ago! Freakshakes, an extravagant milkshake that may just freak some out with its ingredients, is originally from a patisserie called Patissez in Canberra, Australia. Patissez has recently landed in Singapore with four amazing flavours!
Patissez Singapore
Located on the ground floor of the still fresh Raffles Holland V mall, Patissez Singapore touts slightly extravagant milkshakes better known as ‘freakshakes’. It’s originally from Canberra, Australia. These flavours are mostly a mix of different food items that most people would love on its own, but even more when it’s in a cup together.
This is the second international branch of the original Patissez brand, with the first being Patissez Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. The creator of the Patissez Freakshake said that they are planning to launch in Thailand and China in the future.
[caption id="attachment_11016" align="alignnone" width="700"] The evolution of its logo[/caption]Patissez Freakshake
At first glance, Patissez’s signature Freakshakes look almost like they were squeezed into a mason jar too small for what it is — a heavenly, decadent mess. Depending on the type of shake you ordered, you would find whipped cream, peanut butter and chocolate overflowing out of the jar. Patissez Freakshake instantly transports you to Willy Wonka’s magical factory.
[caption id="attachment_11035" align="alignnone" width="700"] A minishake[/caption]Patissez Singapore carries four freakshakes: the Muddy Pat, Pretzella, Mint Condition and Sneaky Freak.
As we tried all of these four shakes, it became increasingly evident that these unmistakably unique concoctions are more than just items on the menu. Priced at $16 a drink, each Patissez Freakshake is an experience.
Patissez Freakshake – the Muddy Pat
[caption id="attachment_11214" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image Credit: @leivonne / Instagram[/caption]We munched down on the Muddy Pat, a chocolate-y shake that comes with vanilla mousse, a heavenly fudge brownie and a marshmallow. As we savoured it, we mm-ed and aah-ed our way, as if experiencing a gastro-orgasmic release.
Patissez Freakshake – Pretzella and Mint Condition
[caption id="attachment_11034" align="alignnone" width="700"] Mint Condition and the Pretzella[/caption]My favourite was the Pretzella, a Nutella-meets-pretzels kind of shake that I would, without a doubt, describe as ‘best of both worlds’: salty and sweet. Slurping the shake with a straw, finishing the messy yet beautiful milkshake made me felt cathartic.
You might also find the Mint Condition a good buy, especially if you are a fan of mint chocolate and cookie sandwiches. It would have been even tastier if the cookie sandwich was made out of ice cream, but that might just make it even more over-the-top.
Patissez Freakshake – Sneaky Freak
Since peanut butter isn’t exactly my favourite topping in the cabinet, I have to say that the Sneaky Freak wouldn’t be my first choice. But from what I’ve heard, it is every bit delicious and lip-smackingly good as it is salty and creamy.
[caption id="attachment_11213" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image Credit: @lollapaige/ Instagram[/caption]Patissez Food
Aside from whipped cream-topped drinks, the Patissez also functions as a restaurant with many top-notch dishes to boot. Popular choices include its all-day breakfast selections, from bacon jam toasty to Brekkie Burger to Corn & Zucchini Fritters.
[caption id="attachment_11043" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image Credit: @patissezsg / Instagram[/caption]It is also well known for its burgers, all served with fries and Patissez special sauce. Examples include the Freak Burger which is made up of two beef patties, double crispy bacon, bacon jam, American cheddar and housemade BBQ sauce. For the non-beef diners, the Crispy Panko Chicken Burger is not to be missed. It comes with Panko sesame chicken, kewpie mayo, pickled vegetables ad lettuce.
With a wooden-plank ceiling and warm lighting – in low hanging bulbs no less, this cosy cafe will definitely make a good date spot for folks. It’s the best place to relax and enjoy a sinful drink with some good ol’ brunch and company. Just be careful not to overeat!

[Review] Yunomori Onsen @ Kallang – The Place To Soothe All Aches
This spa, Yunomori Onsen @ Kallang, has been making waves around social media as of late. It has only been open recently. However, the hype surrounding it made us curious about its offerings. We decided to head down early one Wednesday morning to see what having an onsen in sunny Singapore would be like.
Yunomori Onsen @ Kallang – Hot water in the forest
The name Yunomori means hot water in the forest, and since Singapore is a garden city, I suppose it is quite fitting.
The interior is very evidently a nod to Japanese culture – clean, white and neat. But there’s a little sign on the warming list that says no yakuzas allowed inside the Onsen. That made me laugh out loud.
Yunomori Onsen @ Kallang – Shower facilities & onsen
The men’s and women’s sections are predictably segregated.
Yukatas are available at the counter as you enter each area. Yunomori Onsen @ Kallang recommends onsen users to experience it the Japanese way by going commando. However, women have the option of requesting for disposable underwear if they are uncomfortable going in commando. When we were there, many younger women covered themselves up but the older women seemed to be very comfortable in their own skin.
The dressing room area is equipped with a hairdryer, cotton wool and buds, and a Yunomori branded moisturiser for after the onsen experience.
The showers are very much like the ones you see in Japan. They come with a stool for you to sit on. Before and after the Onsen experience, you are expected to take a shower at these shower areas. It was quite an odd experience as I don’t sit while showering. But huge bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash were readily available at each shower stall.
Yunomori Onsen @ Kallang – Men’s sauna & onsen
For some reason, the men have a much larger open shower area (pictured below) right next to the sauna. Women do not have access to the sauna. It is believed that women’s skin is too delicate for the extreme heat.
The men have a total of 6 pools, one more than the women do. The men have an additional pool, known as the hot bath, in which the temperature goes up to 44 degrees Celsius.
Yunomori Onsen @ Kallang – The pools
Apart from that, the rest of the pools are the same. There is the soda bath, featuring Japanese imported technology, and the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. The 38.5-39.5 degree Celsius water in the soda bath is enriched with a high concentration of natural carbon dioxide. The CO2-rich water is said to increase blood oxygen levels, improve circulation, reduce high blood pressure and also detoxify the blood.
The Silk Bath is hot water (38.5-39.5 degrees Celsius) reacting with large amounts of micro-bubble containing hydrogen. These jets of tiny bubbles give the water a sensual and silky texture, which makes the skin really smooth. The soothing nature of the bath is said to relax the muscles and alleviate problems like rheumatism, arthritic aches and pains, as well as mental stress.
Other baths include the Bubble Bath, imbued with the nutrients of carefully balanced minerals. It feels just like a jacuzzi, except you will be stewing in water of about 38.5-39.5 degrees Celsius.
The Jet Bath consists of full-body jet streams of air that is said to help stimulate blood circulation. This bath is slightly hotter at 39.5-41 degrees Celsius. Personally, I find it best to start with the lower temperature pools then move up to the Jet Bath last before taking a dip into the last pool, the cold bath.
The Cold Bath is an invigorating jolt to the senses and almost has a numbing effect as the water is set at 17-19 degrees Celsius. The almost icy cold water will stimulate the body’s natural energy and nerve endings. It is also touted to boost anti-ageing effects by closing the pores and tightening the skin.
Yunomori Onsen @ Kallang – Steam bath
Both the men and women also get to enjoy the steam bath, with sea salt scrub readily available in a huge wooden bucket. The steam bath is set to 100% humidity, up to 49 degrees Celsius.
You would think, after all of the heat in Singapore, you’d be used to it. But there’s really nothing better than taking that final dip into the cold bath.
After that, guests are welcome to lounge at the lounge area, complete with pillows and blankets. Otherwise, a cafe is also available to serve meals to hungry clientele.

A Rundown Of What’s Cooking At Food Opera – 8 Stalls You Must Check Out!
Orchard Road has always been a convening point for us Singaporeans. It is a glitzy, world-famous shopping stretch that is adorned with restaurants dishing out fine dining selections. However, when it comes to eating at Orchard, we know how you feel; hunting down affordable (apart from fast food) comfort food can be tougher than scouting out the best bargains during GSS.
If you’ve got your head in your hands about what to eat at Orchard, fret not! We’ve discovered this hidden food gem of a place, and we’re letting the cat out of the bag. The reopening of Food Opera at Set C ($25)[/caption]
The white bee hoon at this new stall differs slightly from the Singaporean version we’re familiar with – Xing Lou’s unique rendition has wok-fried vermicelli simmered in shellfish gravy. The gravy is not as viscous as our local version but has a complex depth of flavour and a sweet aftertaste. The bee hoon has an ultra-soft, springy bite that breaks easily with each mouthful.
We all know how grimy stale seafood tastes like, and Xing Lou goes the extra mile to ensure this never happens. Expect only the freshest of crustaceans as seafood is imported from Endau, one of Malaysia‘s largest fishing ports, almost every other day.
Set C is perfect for sharing as it comes with a generous serving of bee hoon and an impressive seafood medley of prawns, crayfish, scallops and clams. If you’re not into sharing (we totally understand), you can opt to have your own bee hoon with any crustacean of your choice from just $6.90.
2. Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh
[caption id="attachment_10887" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Signature Prime Ribs ($10.50)[/caption] [caption id="attachment_10888" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Claypot Tofu ($8.70)[/caption]Bak kut teh (pork bone soup) has always been a familiar favourite; a warm and comforting broth that fills both your heart and stomach with joy on a cold day. Ya Hua, a long-time contender in the bak kut teh scene, is helmed by founder Madam Gwee Peck Hua who believes in cooking healthy, unpretentious food that is humble yet comforting at best.
This bak kut teh recipe of hers underwent countless revisions after years of trial and error before the broth was finally perfected. Boiled for hours, the soup is flavourful with just the right hint of pepper – it won’t leave that burning sensation down your throat, yet will warm the cockles of your heart. The meat is well-cooked and tender and glides off the bone effortlessly. If you find chewing off the pork bone a hassle, Ya Hua also has a boneless sliced pork soup option ($7.50) – now you’ve got no excuses.
Apart from her iconic bak kut teh, Madam Gwee has also introduced new, homely dishes into her menu at her new stall. The Claypot Tofu – silken tofu simmered with steamed egg and pork balls – is laced with a nostalgic taste of home. Every mouthful of this humble dish will remind you of grandma’s cooking.
3. Ah Yat Kitchen
[caption id="attachment_10890" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Ah Yat Shredded Roasted Chicken with Fries ($6.50)[/caption]Ah Yat may be a new tenant at Food Opera, but it has been a household name since the 1970s. While they’re undeniably known for their abalone, do give their Roasted Chicken a try! With meticulous care, the chicken is marinated and roasted to coax out flavours that will delight your taste buds. After the chicken is roasted to perfection, it is seasoned with sesame oil and sesame seeds to further enhance the flavour of this traditional Chinese dish.
The texture of the shredded chicken is impeccable – you won’t have to worry about it being too dry! All these tedious preparations contribute to fragrant, hand-pulled chicken so tender you have to try it to believe it – it might possibly give your favourite Hainanese chicken rice stall a run for its money. For $6.50, you get a quarter-chicken serving of meat and a choice of crispy fries or a bowl of rice on the side.
Another gem to try Ah Yat would be their Abalone Baked Rice ($8.80); a fragrant and delectable mix of egg fried rice with baby abalone.
4. Scotts Hwa Heng Beef Noodle
[caption id="attachment_10891" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Beef Noodle Combo Set Meal ($7.50). Credit: Fishball Noodle ($5.50)[/caption]Fishball noodle – a satisfying, fuss-free Singaporean dish that needs no further introduction. Forget about all day breakfast! Fishball noodle has been a go-to for breakfast, lunch and even supper for as long as we can remember.
Here at Li Xin, they take great pride in serving quality, handmade fishballs. Their fresh fishballs are made of top-grade yellowtail fish meat and chilled in cold water (no freezing!) to ensure freshness. According to second-generation owner Mr. Eddie Lim, this is an age-old method used to keep the fishballs bouncy and succulent. These rustic balls have a unique, ‘meaty’ texture to them – a world apart from the processed ones you find in supermarkets, in a good way of course.
The dry version of their mee pok noodles is tossed in an otherworldly concoction of chilli and ketchup, striking a perfect balance between sweet and savoury. It does not have that strong vinegar sourness but rather a mild, tangy aftertaste, much like good sourdough bread. As for its soup counterpart, the broth is refreshingly addictive – you will be down to your last slurp before you know it. Fans of pork lard, you’re in luck. Li Xin is extremely generous with their self-prepared, fried pork lard – sinful at best but irresistibly good.
6. Riverside Indonesian BBQ
[caption id="attachment_10894" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Ayam Panggang Set ($6.50)[/caption]You can’t call yourself a true blue Singaporean if you haven’t heard of Riverside. We’re kidding, it’s never too late to introduce this hearty dish into your world. Their bestseller, the Ayam Panggang (Indonesian grilled chicken) set, heralds snaking queues at Food Opera daily.
Riverside goes to great lengths to serve this scrumptious dish. The chicken thigh is first dipped in a secret sauce – a combination of Indonesia spices. After being set to rest, the thigh is barbequed till it exudes a smoky aroma. That’s not all! Before being served, the thigh is dipped in a homemade special black sauce. This is THE sauce that defines their legendary ayam panggang.
The dish is served with a slab of omelette, homemade sambal chilli and rice slathered with curry gravy. The coconut-heavy curry is slightly on the sweeter end and is not too spicy, so go ahead and raise the spice level with their killer sambal chilli. All in all, this divine combination of grilled chicken in black sweet sauce, rice smothered with curry and sambal chilli gets a resounding nod of approval from us – and probably half the population in Singapore already.
Seafood lovers, you can also rejoice! Riverside serves up equally delish BBQ squid and fish too.
7. Padang Padang
[caption id="attachment_10897" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Ikan Assam Pedas ($3.50),
Ayam Kari ($3.50/drumstick or $5.50/quarter chicken)[/caption]
If you, like every other Singaporean, live for cai png (economical rice), then this Indonesian version of our everyday staple provides a refreshing twist. You are more than free to mix and match a variety of meats and vegetables that are prepared daily, but we’d say go straight for the Ayam Kari and Ikan Assam Pedas.
The Padangnese-style ayam kari is essentially chicken simmered in a rich, coconut curry gravy that boasts a blend of at least seven spices. The chicken has a firm, silky texture and slides off the bone with a simple tug.
The ikan assam pedas, on the other hand, is a sour-spicy stingray dish prepared with a medley of fresh laksa leaves, tamarind and lemongrass – so rejuvenating, it’s almost like a wake-up call for your taste buds. The stingray is fresh with a nice succulent texture. We absolutely love the spot-on tanginess of the gravy – it is not too sour and has an addictive aftertaste that leaves you salivating for more.
The folks behind Padang Padang only cook with raw spices specially imported from Indonesia. You’ll also be pleasantly surprised to know that Padang Padang uses no preservatives or MSG in any of their dishes. Kudos to them! We now have the liberty to order anything here without setting the MSG alarms off.
8. Ice Shop
[caption id="attachment_10899" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Bobo Chacha with Taro Balls ($3.20)[/caption]You know what they say, there is always a dessert stomach – the happy ending to any meal. We love our rainbow cakes and churros, but traditional desserts will always hold an uncontested place in our hearts. This stall has a lengthy menu of over 35 hot and cold selections to satisfy your sweet cravings. The portions are not monstrous, so you won’t get jelat of the milk-based treats.
The Chendol here is remarkably different from the ones served elsewhere. Topped with jackfruit, it is a rich and flavourful thirst-quencher in a bowl. The red bean and sago jelly balances out the sweet and salty coconut milk nicely, and the shaved ice is doused in the ever familiar Gula Melaka. No doubt an ideal finish to a satisfying meal, or a midday indulgence.
If your palate gravitates more towards the warm desserts, the Bobo ChaCha with Taro Balls is a traditional option with a twist. The usual, transparent tapioca pearls you would expect to find in this coconut milk-based broth are replaced with taro balls instead. These purple, jelly-like balls have a strong, natural taro taste to them. No bobo chacha is complete without sweet potato and yam chunks, and the ones at Ice Shop are delightfully soft, but not to the point of mushy.

Majestic Peking Duck: The New 5-Star Hawker Dish?
You heard us right – the Peking duck has made its way into our local hawker scene! Helmed by award-winning chefs Yong Bing Ngen and Yang Lai Fatt from the is dishing out restaurant quality fare at economical hawker prices. Gone are the days when you require special occasions to indulge in this plate of 5-star goodness.
They’ve got five different versions of a duck dish, but the stall’s highlight is definitely the Duck Platter. For just $24, you get the exact same thing you would expect from reputable Chinese restaurants at just half the price. We reckon it’s the best GSS (Great Singapore Sale) deal for our food-loving nation. The duck is roasted in a classic Apollo oven to achieve its crispy, charred skin and succulent interior.
We know that BBQ chicken wings are an all-time favourite street food, basically a must-have at every hawker centre. However, if you’re here at Makansutra, skip the usual chicken wings and try something new. The Honey Glazed Roasted Duck Wings, for instance, is a sweet alternative.
This Duck Salad makes the perfect snack or a side dish to share. Here we’ve got a hearty mix of greens tossed in umami laden sauce and truffle oil, topped with a generous serving of sliced duck meat.
The Salted Duck Vegetable Soup is a traditional favourite. The peppery broth is boiled with preserved veggies for a flavoursome, homely taste that is served with a whole duck wing.
Fans of fried rice, the Duck Fried Rice with Crispy Cereal is calling out for you.
This is a bonus treat at Majestic Peking Duck. We know it’s not a duck dish, but the Crispy Soft Shell Crab with Thai Mango Salad is so divine that the chefs had to include this in their menu as well.
Major props to the Majestic group for bringing this delectable Chinese delicacy into our hawker scene without compromising an ounce of quality. Now we can get the best of both worlds – our humble hawker fare alongside restaurant-standard Peking duck, all without breaking the bank.
