Pokémon Café – An Exclusive Sneak Pik(achu) At Its Menu!

The last time we talked about our childhood dream coming true, it was when we announced the launch of the first Pokémon café in Singapore. Since then, we’ve been curious about the café’s menu. Will there be a local twist to its dishes? How extensive is the menu? After travelling across the land and searching far and wide, we’re proud to say that we’ve found the ultimate prize – the menu of the Pokémon Café. We know, this is totally our destiny.

From 27th May – 31st July 2016, the Pokémon Café will be serving an array of Pikachu Pokémon themed mains, desserts and drinks that’ll satisfy the inner Pokémon master in you. Ready to find out what they are? Turn your cap backwards Ash Ketchum style and let’s go!

Mains

[caption id="attachment_8206" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Pikachu Smiling Rice Omelette with Magma Sauce![/caption]

The menu may not be extensive, but rest assured that having your rice served in the shape of Pikachu’s face will have you forget that in no time. Amongst the list is the Pikachu Smiling Rice Omelettte with Magma Sauce $25. Pikachu’s face is shaped with saffron rice and is accompanied by omelette ears.

[caption id="attachment_8207" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Battle on Pikachu! Level-Up with Rare Candy! Battle on Pikachu! Level-Up with Rare Candy![/caption]

Another intriguing combination is Battle on Pikachu! Level-up with Rare Candy $20, a dish that consists of beef patty, mashed potatoes and vegetables in the shape of a Pokéball. We’re not too sure what the Rare Candy is, but we’re hoping that it’ll level-up the dish.

[caption id="attachment_8208" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Special Move “Fire Blast”! Special Move “Fire Blast”![/caption]

Equally intriguing is the Special Move “Fire Blast”! $20. A possible rice-in-a-pan dish, this dish is probably one that best fits its name.

Dessert

[caption id="attachment_8211" align="alignnone" width="1195"]Pikachu’s “Thunder Shock” Parfait Pikachu’s “Thunder Shock” Parfait[/caption]

Talk about seriously adorable-looking desserts. Starting off with Pikachu’s “Thunder Shock” Parfait $15, this sponge cake looks too good to be eaten. Accompanied by a crackling cotton candy ball, this dessert will satisfy your sugar craving for sure.

13254636_10153035008492325_5782686908935690481_o

A cream puff and cotton candy, the Pokéball Cream Puff! $20 even allows customers to decorate the dessert with a choco pen. Not much to do with the theme but this interactive dessert is pretty interesting.

[caption id="attachment_8213" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Pikachu’s Sweeeeet Pancake Pikachu’s Sweeeeet Pancake[/caption]

The usual pancakes and maple syrup takes on an adorable twist with Pikachu’s Sweeeeet Pancake $20. On a serious note, we’re hoping that the number of ‘e’s is not representative of the dessert’s sugar level.

[caption id="attachment_8214" align="alignnone" width="900"] Special Move Hydro Pump Image
Credit: Daniel Food Diary[/caption]

Finally something that’s not Pikachu related, the Special Move Hydro Pump $15 is made of jelly, candy, white chocolate, and custard cream in the shape of a Pokéball. We’d have liked it better if the jelly is in the shape of Squirtle but guess Pikachu remains the star of the show.

Drinks

[caption id="attachment_8215" align="alignnone" width="1179"]“Volt Tackle” Soda “Volt Tackle” Soda[/caption]

A combination of passion fruit soda and mango sherbet, the “Volt Tackle” Soda promises to give customers a tingling sensation that hopefully is more pleasant than what its name suggests.

[caption id="attachment_8216" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Pikachu Latte - Hot Pikachu Latte – Hot[/caption]

If you’re more of a coffee person, you’ll most likely appreciate the Pikachu Latte.

[caption id="attachment_8217" align="alignnone" width="1035"]Pikachu Latte - Iced Pikachu Latte – Iced[/caption]

Do note that the Hot $8 and Iced $9 versions come in different forms so if you’re unsure about which to get, you can always make a decision based on the aesthetics.

Ready to eat them all? As aesthetically pleasing as the dishes may be, we have to admit that to pay for them is the real test. As a witty friend of ours so rightly asked, is this Poké-a-hole-in-your-wallet café worth its price tag? We’ll leave it to you to decide.

Kyushu Pancake – Japan’s Famous Guilt-Free Pancake Is Here In SG

Founded by Koji Muraoka, Kyushu Pancake Café has been Japan’s most famous pancake dessert store since its first opening in 2012. After the initial opening, Kyushu Pancake Café gained so much popularity that it proceeded to open another 8 outlets in Japan and 2 more in Taiwan.

Now, this popular pancake café is going to take Singapore by storm and has launched its first outlet here on 11 May 2016. The pancake fever hit our shores so hard, the store had to start taking reservations 3 months before its opening date!

[caption id="attachment_7150" align="alignnone" width="960"]Image Credits: Kyuchu Pancake Singapore Image Credits: Kyushu Pancake Singapore[/caption]

What makes these mouth-watering pancakes so special? Well the pancakes are made out of the finest Kyushu wheat and grains, which are carefully examined and mixed.

The ingredients that make up the delicious pancakes are a mix of 7 different grains from all over Japan. These grains include fertilizer free wheat, brown rice, millet, pressed barley, non-glutinous rice, purple glutinous rice and red glutenous rice.  Other ingredients such as barley, raw sugar brown sugar are 100% organic and free of additives. This ensures that the pancakes are of premium quality.

[caption id="attachment_8048" align="alignnone" width="1280"]Image Credits: Kyushu Pancake Singapore Image Credits: Kyushu Pancake Singapore[/caption]

The flour mix also brings out a special buttermilk taste that one cannot find at other pancake stores. This is because Kyushu Pancake uses quality buttermilk powder in their mix of ingredients. Mr Muraoka spent 18 months searching for the perfect mixture of grains to make his pancakes with, all of which, are free of artificial additives and processed starch.

This makes Kyushu Pancake fresher and healthier than other pancake brands. Most pancakes on the menu are served with delicious sweet treats such as ice-cream, or savoury sides such as bacon and eggs.

[caption id="attachment_8052" align="alignnone" width="1768"]Image Credits: Kyushu Pancake Singapore Image Credits: Kyushu Pancake Singapore[/caption]

Another reason why the pancakes are so hard to resist is because these pancakes are made in-house. Yep, you heard that right, everything is made in-house. This ensures that the pancakes that you see on your plate are fresh and not pre-made frozen ones. Other toppings such as whipped cream and jams are also whipped up on the spot. Talk about dedication!

The outlet here in sunny Singapore is located along Thomson road, and is just a 3 minute walk away from Novena MRT station. The Japanese-like 42 seater café is filled with dainty decorations and cosy seats.

5 Best Places To Try Famous American-Chinese Dishes In SG

When I first tried American Chinese food in New York last year, I remember standing in front of the ordering counter feeling a little indignant.

I’ve heard a lot about the cuisine, from TV, movies and popular culture, and as someone with more than two decades of experience eating Chinese food, albeit it being more Singaporean or Malaysian Chinese than anything, I thought that the takeout boxes weren’t going to be any good. “It’s fake Chinese food, isn’t it?” I thought to myself. You know, how authentic can it be when the recipes are edited to suit the American palette?

After my first bite, all my preconceived opinions of American-Chinese food were thrown out of the window. Never mind the authenticity. The food was delicious. Every bite left me wanting for more. I had no complaints, only compliments.

Months after returning to Asia, I still crave for American-Chinese food. If you’ve never tried American-Chinese food, here are 5 pretty authentic dishes and places to try them in Singapore.

General Tso’s Chicken

https://www.instagram.com/p/-JIopjpQXa/?taken-at=219825696

Named after Zuo Zongtang, a general in the Qing Dynasty who fought many revolts and wars, General Tso’s Chicken is the poster child of all American-Chinese dishes. But don’t be fooled; the General himself, who came from the Hunan province in China, has never tasted this saucy, broccoli and cubed chicken recipe.

If you are interested, you could even watch The Search for General Tso, a documentary film detailing the origins of this tasty chicken dish, to find out more about how it came to be so popular.

Those who have tried this dish would probably liken it to the sweet and sour meat dishes one can find in most Singaporean eateries, even though General Tso’s Chicken is unique enough to get imported onto the menu in China.

Where to try:

Seletar Hill Restaurant
Address: 16 Jln Selaseh, Singapore 808440
Tel: +65 6483 0348
Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 11.30 AM – 2.30 PM, 5.30 PM – 10 PM

Chop Suey

https://www.instagram.com/p/BDaMuIigUhS/?taken-by=chopsueycafe

Literally meaning ‘a mix of broken pieces’, Chop Suey may not seem like the most appealing dish on the menu. Its origins, shrouded in fog, are not yet determined, but some say that it’s the result of a Chinese guest’s kitchen improvisation after an unsatisfying meal while others maintain that it came from Chinese miners putting together leftovers to make themselves a good meal. It is also rumoured to have originated from coastal city Taishan in China, although we can never be too sure.

But if you’re looking to hit that vegetable quota of yours, look to this colourful, diverse plate for some answers.

Where to try:

Chopsuey Cafe
Address: 10 Dempsey Road #01-23, Singapore 247700
Tel: +65 9224 6611
Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday 11.30 AM – 12 AM, Friday 11.30 AM – 2 AM, Saturday 10.30 AM – 2 AM, Sunday 10.30 AM – 12 AM

Mushu Pork

https://www.instagram.com/p/BCsk3vFF-3k/?tagged=mushupork

Like Chop Suey, Mushu Pork may not look glamorous, but it is still a good mix of stir-fry pork, black fungus, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and zucchini. The Shandong dish has now become a star in America’s Chinese food industry, where it is eaten in the style of a taco or burrito where the pork and vegetables are placed in a pancake with some sauce. Think Peking Duck or Popiah but pork — wrapped and fragrant.

Where to try:

Lokkee
Address: #03-01 Plaza Singapura, 68 Orchard Road, Singapore 238839

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 11 AM – 3 PM, 5.30 PM – 10 PM

Crab Rangoon

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFSI9KrHoOX/?tagged=crabrangoon

It’s a little harder to find Crab Rangoons in Singapore – oh, so cripsy! – but you’re in luck. W Singapore at Sentosa Cove’s latest promotion will see to it that you eat all the crabs you want. The hotel’s restaurant, The Kitchen Table, will be serving all things crabby every Saturday from 2 April 2016 to 25 June 2016, so you better hurry. 7 Top Lor Mee In SG That Will Have You Return For More!

Dark, gooey and not exactly pleasing to the eye, Lor Mee can appear, well, a little unappetising. But one bite into the seemingly strange dish and who knows, you may just be as hooked on this local dish as we are.

For all our fellow Lor Mee lovers, we’ve compiled a solid list of Singapore’s best Lor Mees for you. Go ahead, embark on a food adventure! For those who are not exactly fans of this local dish, just try lor. You never know.

1. Xin Mei Xiang

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFFYHClOX_y/?tagged=xinmeixiang

After all these years, Xin Mei Xiang ($3-$6) is sticking to its traditional roots and has since gained a large following for its Lor Mee. Punchy and flavourful, it’s a no-brainer that Makansutra listed it as one of their top 5 Lor Mee in Singapore.

2. Old Bukit Purmei

[caption id="attachment_7581" align="aligncenter" width="700"]Best lor mee in Singapore Image credit: Old Bukit Purmei Lor Mee[/caption]

At Old Bukit Purmei, the braised sauce and pork ribs are so savoury that they make your taste buds dance. The Lor Mee ($3-$4.50) here is so delicious it converted one of our acquaintances to a die hard fan. Believe it or not, he had his lunch at Old Bukit Purmei for a whole week.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BBEIkLDSFYv/?tagged=oldbukitpurmeilormee

He eventually stopped frequenting the stall — not because he grew tired of eating the same food but because of the insanely long queue. This is how epic the Lor Mee is.

Old Bukit Purmei
Address:
501 West Coast Drive Food Loft
Opening hours: Wed & Thur, Sat & Sun: 7.30am – 1.30pm

3. Lorong Ah Soo

https://www.instagram.com/p/o-CdbZAqfu/?tagged=lorongahsoolormee

If the rest of the Lor Mees in this list are too ordinary for you, we bring your attention to Lorong Ah Soo Lor Mee who brought a whole new meaning to the phrase, “kick it up to a notch”. Instead of the pork belly most Lor Mee lovers are accustomed to, the stall serves tender braised duck meat Lor Mee ($3), giving this dish a unique twist.

Lorong Ah Soo Lor Mee

4. Chia Bee

5. Yuan Chun Famous

https://www.instagram.com/p/pQZJ2IAxb5/?tagged=yuanchunfamouslormee

If you’re one who lives to eat, Yuan Chun Famous Lor Mee ($3) has to be on your food bucket list. This is especially if you have a fondness for thick braising sauce and scrumptious fried prawn cakes.

Address:
Amoy Street Food Centre #02-79/80, 7 Maxwell Road

6. Zhi Xiang Special

Best lor mee in Singapore

See those little crispy things on top of the noodles and gravy? Those are fried yam. Talk about a unique and memorable take! Unfortunately, the Lor Mee portion served at this stall is rather small ($3) so don’t be surprised if you’re still hungry after devouring it.

Piping hot with an appetising flavour, a meal here commands attention and is the ultimate choice for a kickass breakfast meal. To avoid the crowds, we recommend coming here around 10am on a Sunday morning.

https://www.instagram.com/p/7E3ChxTaXT/?tagged=zhixiangspeciallormee

Zhi Xiang Special Lor Mee
Address: #01-49 Block 93 Lorong 4, Toa Payoh Market & Food Centre

7. Hai Tang

Best lor mee in SingaporeDespite patronising Hai Tang at 10 am on a Monday morning, we still spent 30 minutes in line for a bowl of their Lor Mee. Can you just imagine what the crowd is like during peak hours?

https://www.instagram.com/p/0hFgDmOSHY/?tagged=haitanglormee

For $3, you get a generous amount of noodles, ingredients, (braised meat, eggs, mushrooms) and fragrant gravy. Hai Tang’s Lor Mee is — to borrow a quote from Rob Thomas — warm like a sweater. It also tastes like home.

Sure, the service is on the slow side, but with its price, size, and quality, we’re definitely not complaining.

Address: Mei Ling Market & Food Centre, 159 Mei Ling Street #02-14
Opening hours: Daily 8am-2pm

Which stall serves the best Lor Mee in your opinion? Old Bukit Purmei? Hai Tang? None of the above? Leave your comments and let us know!

Singapore is indeed a green city with indoor and outdoor gardens, trees planted by the sidewalks, and parks — lots of them! If you ever have trouble trying to find your way around this island nation, just keep a lookout for parks and the PCN — Park Connector Network — that links them all into one single cycling or running route.

This has got to be one of the most underrated cycling paths in Singapore, especially if you don’t happen to live in the neighbourhoods mentioned in the route. Not only will you get an insight into what each estate is like, from the changing architecture to late night food options, you might even get to see various animals, from otters to roosters, going about their day in the concrete jungle.

It’s time to work out… and enjoy some good food while you’re at it.
