Cheapest Places To Park In Orchard – 2017 Edition
Orchard Road is one area in Singapore where it’s notoriously expensive to park your car.
I’m sure we’ve all experienced the horror of arriving at the car park exit gantry, only to find that we’ve racked up over $10 in parking fees (true story). And that’s on top of all the money we’ve spent shopping.
Unless you have loads of things to carry, or are travelling with kids in tow, there’s just no justifying spending that kind of money on what is essentially a place to put your car while you run around doing your errands.
As someone who’s in town way too often, I decided to find out where the cheapest places to park in town are. Here are the cheapest places to park your car no matter where in town you need to go, and I promise, they’re all unde 500m away.
Instead of parking at ION Orchard, park at:
[caption id="attachment_31826" align="alignnone" width="2303"] Image Credit: Marketing-Interactive[/caption]Mon – Fri (before 5pm): $2.67 for 1st hr; $1.28 for subsequent 30 min
Mon – Fri (after 5pm): $3/entry
Sat – Sun/PH (before 5pm): $2.56 for 1st hr; $1.88 for subsequent 30 min
Sat – Sun/PH (after 5pm): $3.74/entry
If you can help it, don’t park at ION Orchard unless it’s after 5pm. I learned this lesson the hard way.
Distance: 400m/6 min walk
Mon – Fri (before 5pm): $2.40 for 1st hr; $1.20 for subsequent 30 min
Mon – Fri (after 5pm): $3.20 per entry
Sat (before 5pm): $2.60 for 1st hr; $1.40 for subsequent 30 min
Sat (after 5pm): $3.20 per entry
Sun/PH: $3.20 per entry
Best for parking on Sundays, Public Holidays, and Mondays to Saturdays after 5pm.
Distance: 240m/3 min walk
Daily (before 6pm): $2.50 for 1st hr; $1.30 for subsequent 30 min
Daily (after 6pm): $3.80 per entry
Best for parking everyday after 6pm.

Mon – Sat (before 6pm): $2.14 for 1st hr; $1.07 for subsequent 30 min Of the major malls along Orchard Road, 313@Somerset actually has pretty good parking rates. But in the case that the car park is full, or you want to save even more on parking, here are some great alternatives. Distance: 350m/5 min walk Mon – Fri (before 5pm): $2.05/hr Best for parking all the time. 3. Image Credit: Inquirer[/caption]
Mon – Fri (before 5pm, except for 12pm – 2pm): $1.28/30min Distance: 210m/3 min walk Mon – Sat (before 5pm): $2.50 for 1st hr; $1.25 for subsequent 30 min Best for parking on Sundays, Public Holidays, and Mondays to Saturdays after 5pm. The Plaza Singapura car park is always full, and for good reason – the parking rates are fairly decent here. For that reason, I’ve listed down some nearby car parks with rates that are also competitive, if not better. Mon – Fri (before 6pm): $1.28 for 1st hr; $0.43 for subsequent 15 min Mon – Sat (before 5pm): $1.20/30 min Best for parking Sundays, Public Holidays, and Mondays to Saturdays after 5pm . 3. Expect queues to be long though the quality of the food more than makes up for it. Definitely a meal to ramen-ber. Ramen Nagi Singapore If you’re a fan of sweets, specifically Korean desserts, then you’ll want to try Cafe De Paris. With a few franchises in Canada, Hong Kong and China, the cafe is finally opening its doors in Singapore on 5 November. They will be serving up photogenic selections of elegant cakes, fresh fruit bonbons (pictured above), cold brew coffee, healthy pressed juices, and premium teas. The fresh fruit bonbons are only available for certain periods in a year as the cafe uses seasonal fruits specially imported from Korea. You get to choose from the chocolate brownie, mango, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, and grape bonbons. Each one is hand-crafted and loaded with your selected fruit, non-dairy whipped cream, and slushie. It takes a while to create each bonbon so expect to wait for a bit. The cafe officially opens on 5 November so bring a friend and a camera! Cafe De Paris Singapore Newly opened, B Burger has already been compared to the likes of In-N-Out burger in USA. B Burger combines the traditional American burger with Japanese flavours. Expect stuff like the Karate Burger ($7.90) which uses karaage chicken and daikon pickles, and the Osaka Corn Dog ($6.90) which comes with tobiko, nori, teriyaki sauce and mayo. Their ice cream creations are pretty interesting as well, with flavours such as Mount Fuji ($6/$8) which features a nata de coco and coconut flakes atop matcha ice cream. Located at Orchard Cathay Cineleisure, this burger joint is going to be the next big thing. Eat your heart out, Shakeshack. B Burger Sounds like a pretty packed November to us! We Found Some Mad Local Talent On This Streaming App And You Better BeLive It
With the rise of social media, sharing bits of our personal lives has never been easier.
If you’re a millennial, you’re probably familiar with the wonders of live streaming apps such as Instagram Live, YouNow, and Periscope. Maybe you’re even a live streamer yourself!
While each is unique in its own way, our favourite for discovering local talent has to be BeLive.
BeLive is a local live streaming app, and some great undiscovered talents are on there, streaming their performances. Think of it as busking – but online.
Here are some of the talents you should keep your eye – and ear – out for on the app!
[caption id="attachment_30791" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Image Credit: Image Credit: @yokezofficial[/caption]With 9.1K subscribers on YouTube, Yokez is an independent singer-songwriter and keyboardist with an incredibly impressive portfolio.
She mainly covers Chinese songs and sings a mean cover of “Let’s Not Be Friends In Future” by Eric Chou. Yokez is always chatty on stream and bursts into songs that are mentioned by the people watching her livestream.
Always funny, always entertaining.
Performing LIVE at: @yokezofficial
2. Marcus Lee Jun Wei
[caption id="attachment_30794" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @leejunweimarcus[/caption]Marcus was the 2nd runner-up in Campus Superstar 2 and also the lead frontman of indie rock band “Exdee”. He is also the lead singer of the 3-piece acoustic group “Footprint” and also currently under the mentorship of local rapper Shigga Shay.
Being a versatile performer, Marcus covers a wide range of genres from pop, jazz and rock, to ballads and 90’s classics.
You can listen to him cover both English and Chinese songs on his streams. His cover of “Back At One” by Brian McKnight has us melting.
Performing LIVE at: @leejunweimarcus
3. Veekher Wong
[caption id="attachment_30798" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @veekherwong[/caption]With 5.5K followers on BeLive, Veekher is not a stranger to livestreaming.
She enjoys performing English and Chinese songs on BeLive. We love her cover of Jay Chou’s “Love Confession” with Yokez. She’s also friends with Marcus Lee and he usually shows up in her streams.
Veekher usually streams at least once a week on BeLive as she enjoys how interactive the app is, compared to Facebook Live or Instagram.
Performing LIVE at: @veekherwong
4. Delvina See
[caption id="attachment_30807" align="aligncenter" width="853"] Image Credit: @sdelvinaa[/caption]Delvina performs at *SCAPE with her siblings as a group known as thez3n. Their vocal harmony really shines in their rendition of “A Little Happiness” by Hebe Tian.
She has also been streaming on BeLive since 1 September 2016 and streams regularly to just hang out and chat with her viewers or sing.
Singing and chilling, sounds like a friday night at your favourite bar.
Performing LIVE at: @sdelvinaa
5. Sophia Tay
[caption id="attachment_30810" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @sophtmusic[/caption]Sophia is an aspiring singer-songwriter who sings both English and Chinese songs and also busks along the stretches of Orchard and Somerset.
If you’re lucky, you might even catch her streaming live from some of her gigs!
We love that she does the mouth trumpet thing that Nathan Hartono does as well.
[caption id="attachment_30822" align="aligncenter" width="480"] GIF Credit: giphy.com[/caption]Performing LIVE at: @sophiataymusic
6. Brendon Chua
[caption id="attachment_30823" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @brendonclf[/caption]Did you know Brendon is the frontman of the local Alternative band, “The Façade“?
He also streams alone on BeLive, jamming and singing and it’s really vibey. He covers English songs, though he spends most of his time strumming on his guitar. We’re not complaining though, he’s a sight for sore eyes.
You can also check out his band’s YouTube covers here.
Performing LIVE at: @brendonclf
7. Chow Jia Hui
[caption id="attachment_30829" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @chowjiahui[/caption]Jia Hui started streaming on BeLive since 6 July and sings regularly on her streams. She enjoys singing and performing and BeLive provides a platform for her to interact with other users with the same interests.
Also, she does mean acoustic renditions of Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, and James Arthur.
So if you’re looking for a hilarious streamer with a wicked sense of humour and great music, don’t miss out on Jia Hui’s livestreams!
Performing LIVE at: @chowjiahui
8. Tessa Lee
[caption id="attachment_30831" align="aligncenter" width="993"] Image Credit: @tessawoohoo[/caption]Tessa enjoys doing covers and regularly shares snippets of her covers on Instagram and Instastories but took to BeLive to be able to stream and perform live.
We are obsessed with her cover of “Rockabye” by Clean Bandit and “Location” by Khalid.
She streams quite regularly so don’t miss out on her acoustic renditions of hit songs!
Performing LIVE at: @tessawoohoo
With these talented musicians streaming and performing on BeLive, don’t say Singapore has no talent.
[caption id="attachment_30837" align="aligncenter" width="749"] Image Credit: BeLive[/caption]Catch these performers live on stream and if you like them, leave them some gifts!

Giant has partnered with local companies in a first-of-its-kind initiative to launch VendMart, a cluster of the largest and widest range of vending machines under one roof in Singapore.
[caption id="attachment_30739" align="aligncenter" width="624"] Image Credit: Giant Singapore[/caption]This Giant collaboration (see what we did there?) is an effort to showcase the many unique and innovative vending machine concepts created in Singapore. 4. Ninja Oden By No Signboard Seafood
[caption id="attachment_30753" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Image Credit: Giant Singapore[/caption]If you’re not familiar with Oden, it is a hearty winter dish that includes fishcakes, daikon, konjac, and eggs simmered in a light dashi broth. Think Lok Lok, Japanese style.
This cashless vending machine sells ready-to-eat canned oden from $4.90 so you don’t have to bring out your steamboat pot.

Halal-certified pizzas from $16? Goodbye Pezzo.
7. Men’s Grooming Products By SGPOMADES

If You Love Tori-Q And Satay, You’ll Love This Kushiyaki Bar That Serves Grilled Skewers
‘Kushiyaki’ is a term that many people in Singapore are not familiar with.
Don’t worry, we will explain. Kushiyaki essentially refers to skewered food that is grilled.
Grilling brings out the natural flavours of the food. It caramelises the sugars in vegetables and marinated meat tend to take on a distinctive roast aroma and flavour.
Enter Kimoto Gastro Bar. This hole-in-the-wall restaurant bar located at The Sail@Marina Bay serves up a wide range of skewered meat and vegetables, tempura, rice bowls, and an extensive menu of saké to go with the food.
This quaint bar may be small but their food is big on flavour.
[caption id="attachment_30626" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Kimoto’s unique windows can be opened up and doubles as seats as well.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_30628" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Take a seat at the cosy bar and watch the chefs grill your food.[/caption]Stick After Stick Of Deliciousness
Now, this is the fun part. The food!
[caption id="attachment_30630" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Buta Bara ($6)[/caption]The Buta Bara (Iberico Pork Belly) is a must-try. The iberico pork belly is brushed with a special sauce before being grilled to caramelised perfection. We promise that this will disappear from the table faster than you can say “Buta Bara”.
[caption id="attachment_30631" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Unagi Riceball ($8)[/caption]New on the menu is this Kimoto original, the Unagi Riceball. Generous amounts of grilled fatty unagi is wrapped in a toasted riceball and is served with their special sauce, bonito flakes and a dollop of tobiko mayo.
This delectable creation is crispy and packed with flavour. We love how umami the unagi is when paired with the special sauce. However, it is quite a hassle to try and get rid of the toasted rice from your teeth afterwards.
It is still a really good riceball though, so do give it a try!
[caption id="attachment_30632" align="aligncenter" width="3868"] Crispy Fried Squid ($15)[/caption]Another Kimoto original, the Crispy Fried Squid is an addictive bar bite that is fried to perfection, yet tender and moist on the inside. This is a hot favourite on the menu so order fast or it might just run out!
[caption id="attachment_30629" align="aligncenter" width="3953"] Uzura Tamago ($4) and Zucchini ($4.50)[/caption]The Uzura Tamago (Quail Egg) is a mini ramen egg. The yolks are not fully cooked so it’s still a bit runny and the umami is concentrated. Each bite of the quail egg is akin to setting off an umami bomb.
Grilled and simply seasoned with salt is the Zucchini kushiyaki ($4.50). It looks underwhelming but don’t let that fool you. We never knew zucchini could be this good.
When you finish your food, don’t just leave the skewers lying around. Kimoto provides these cups for you to leave your finished skewers. Handy!
[caption id="attachment_30638" align="aligncenter" width="2880"] Skewer cups[/caption] [caption id="attachment_30635" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Tempura Moriawase ($12)[/caption]For those of you who are craving something a little more familiar, Kimoto has that covered.
The Tempura Moriawase comes with battered prawns, shitake mushroom, brinjal, sweet potato, carrot, and interestingly, chicken breast!
The chicken breast is tenderised before being coated in tempura batter and fried. The result is a flat, tender piece of chicken breast that just melts in your mouth.
Kimoto also has a rather extensive saké menu, because no decent japanese bar serves food without alcohol. Prices for the saké go from $70 to $1688. Yes, $1688. If you’re not sure about the drink pairing, feel free to ask the friendly staff for recommendations!
All in all, Kimoto Gastro Bar is a great spot to unwind with friends, with great food, great saké and reasonable prices for quality food.

A Makcik Revamped Nasi Ayam With Lava Eggs And Sous-Vide Chicken – But Is It Worth $9.50?
Chicken rice might seem like a simple dish – easy to cook, but hard to perfect.
In Singapore, you’ll find that most stalls offer up Hainanese chicken rice, served up with sides like braised eggs, vegetables and tau kwa (braised tofu).
Makcik Chicken is here to change the chicken rice game, putting a modern twist on the classic Singaporean dish!
Legend has it that there is a makcik with chicken rice skills second to none
Mackcik Chicken is run by a couple who used to work at a media advertising agency, which would explain why their branding game is so on point.
Makcik Chicken maintains that a very camera-shy makcik wants everyone to try her secret recipe. We’re going to assume that makcik exists, so here goes nothing!
Our boxes of chicken rice arrived in simple brown cardboard boxes, no frills attached. But as soon as you open the box, you’ll be greeted by the comforting fragrance of chicken rice. Smells good? Check.
[caption id="attachment_29922" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Simple yet satisfying chicken[/caption]In case you were wondering what’s so special about Makcik’s chicken; the chicken is cooked sous-vide style. For those who didn’t learn to cook from a French chef, that means your chicken was cooked in a vacuum bag to keep it from becoming overcooked. As promised, the chicken was juicy, tender and bursting with flavor with every mouthful.
If you don’t like spice, you probably won’t be impressed by the rice (although it does come in a huge portion). Once you add a lil red or green chili, it’s like the rice suddenly came alive in your mouth. The red chili is potent, with loads of garlic, whilst the green chili is slightly sourer because of the vinegar.
Tastes good? Check.
[caption id="attachment_29929" align="alignnone" width="1192"] Pick from red or green chili![/caption]Makcik be working her magic with lava eggs and glittery drinks
The Hanjuku eggs (soft boiled eggs) was the ultimate deciding factor that made me decide that I liked Makcik’s chicken rice. Seriously, their Hanjuku eggs can even compete with the ones that are sold at 7-Eleven.
[caption id="attachment_29914" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Cik Rose Syrup Limau (left), Bandung Baik Gila (right)[/caption]Grab a drink to accompany your meal while you’re at it. Makcik has stirred up three concoctions to choose from; a crazy good Bandung that even comes with rose petals, a Calamansi Fantasti that comes with a refreshing tinge of mint, and Cik Rose Syrup Limau, a combination of rose syrup, lime and pomegranate drink to satisfy your sweet tooth.
If you have $10 to spare, you might want to consider trying Makcik’s Jambu Jampi Juice, a rose apple drink that swirls with shiny, sparkly edible glitter. Plus points for presentation!
[caption id="attachment_29920" align="alignnone" width="1180"] Let makcik work her magic (Image Credit: makcikchicken)[/caption]The only downside that we could really foresee is that there isn’t space for you to dine in when you visit their outlet; there’s only a bench outside right now.
Your best bet is to order Makcik Chicken through Deliveroo, Ubereats, or Honestbee so that you don’t need to hunt for a place to enjoy your meal before it becomes cold.
The only thing really stopping me from ordering from my dear Makcik everyday is the $9.50 price tag. While you might not be able to afford to have it everyday, it’s definitely worth trying. Or maybe every once in a while as a treat.
