Earlier this month, Balvenie teamed up with acclaimed photographer James Stroud to showcase the history and the culture behind Balvenie. The showcase’s art pieces highlighted the Balvenie distillery in Dufftown, Scotland.

Located at Esplanade, Alter Ego offers up both “clean eating” Poke Bowls that Poke Theory is known for as well as a more decadent selection of eats. Bar snacks like Loaded Taters and a mouth watering Chilli Cheese Dog make up the bulk of the menu at Alter Ego.
Our ambassador Nicole dropped by Alter Ego to indulge in some of the delicious (and seriously sinful) fare that Alter Ego is known for!
Best part about Alter Ego? It stays open pretty late and they offer a pretty wide selection of ciders, ales and draft beers!

We Got A Sneak Peak Into The Highly Anticipated Central Perk Singapore – And “OH MY GOD!”
FRIENDS fans your wait is finally over! Singapore’s very own Central Perk has finally opened its doors after months of anticipation. Located along Clarke Quay, we were lucky enough to get a sneak peak!
[caption id="attachment_19134" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Outdoor Patio Area[/caption]Stepping into Central Perk Singapore, the first thing that we noticed is the different ongoing themes. Making our way around this eatery, we found three distinct features; the “outdoor patio” area which has a bit more privacy away from the main storefront. The main dining area is styled exactly like Central Perk itself. And the cafe’s character feature walls feature the most memorable aspects of the characters!
Central Perk Singapore
[caption id="attachment_19125" align="alignnone" width="1000"] “outdoor” seating[/caption]The “outdoor patio” area gives you the “street view” of Central Perk. While this might not be the number one spot you would come to Central Perk Singapore for, it gave us a bit of a thrill standing “outside” the cafe looking in!
[caption id="attachment_19128" align="alignnone" width="1000"] FRIENDS orange couch[/caption]The all too familiar orange couch, we die-hard fans have been wishing to sit on! From the high tables and stools, the light up embellishments and the odd brick walls Central Perk Singapore has gone all out to get every detail from the popular US tv show right. All that’s missing is the famous group of 6 to make this set exactly that of FRIENDS. The team behind Central Perk Singapore injected their own local twist by showcasing a Singapore featured artwork displayed against the back wall.
[caption id="attachment_19124" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Central Perk’s bar area[/caption]Unfortunately, Central Perk Singapore does not have a Gunther just yet, but the bar area looks pretty identical with its onscreen counterpart. Complete with the gold plated coffee machine featured in the show!
[caption id="attachment_19130" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Central Perk’s “store front”[/caption]The backdrop of most of Phoebe’s performances, they’ve even set up a little performance area complete with keyboard and standing microphones.
Character Feature Walls
[caption id="attachment_19133" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Monica’s apartment[/caption]A MUST SEE feature at Central Perk Singapore has to be the cafe’s Character Feature Walls. Step into a replica of Monica’s kitchen from the blue shelves and Chandler’s number one enemy, the Ms Pac Man machine (yes it works)!
[caption id="attachment_19135" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Phoebe’s feature wall[/caption]Say hi to smelly cat and Gladys as you stroll pass Phoebe’s featured wall, complete with scatterings of potpourri and her guitar her featured wall is all about Phoebe’s boho and hippy vibe.
[caption id="attachment_19126" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Chandler and Joey’s apartment[/caption]Play a quick game of foosball with your friends alongside the chick, duck and the cabinet Joey (willingly) locked himself in. Central Perk Singapore doesn’t skip the details, take a quick peek at Chandler’s door, there’s a huge cut where the “power saw kinda got away” from Joey.
Come For The Atmosphere, Stay For The Food
[caption id="attachment_19127" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Oversized Central Perk mugs[/caption]Let’s be honest, what’s Central Perk without a coffee? Here at Central Perk Singapore, they serve up six different coffee blends. Each coffee roasts is characterised after each of the main characters. Not much of a coffee fan? Get a cup of the Rachel. With a light roast, body, acidity and hints of berries this roast is perfect for those who prefer their coffee sweet. Served in Central Perk’s “traditional” oversized mugs, the coffee here is the perfect companion to your leisurely Saturday afternoon.
Not a coffee drinker? Don’t fret because Central Perk Singapore has a menu that will have you drooling! Named after the characters and their many escapades ( Monica’s Lasagna and “Joey’s Special” 2 Pizzas are just some examples), we had to try Ross’ Thanksgiving Sandwich aka The Moist Maker.
The Moist Maker
[caption id="attachment_19136" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Ross’ Thanksgiving Sandwich[/caption]Unlike the Moist Maker, the turkey sandwich at Central Perk Singapore is pretty fancy. Served in a small caste iron pan, several turkey slices sit in a toasted ciabatta bun alongside alfalfa sprouts and sun-dried tomatoes. The piece de resistance of this dish, is surprisingly not even on the sandwich, it’s actually the warm gravy served on the side. Tying the whole sandwich together, the gravy adds a whole dimension to the Moist Maker.
Mrs Braverman’s Cheesecake
[caption id="attachment_19131" align="alignnone" width="1000"] Mrs Braverman’s Cheesecake[/caption]While Rachel’s English Trifle wasn’t a feature on the menu (to be brutally honest, we aren’t sure if we would have the guts to sample that dish!), we did spot Mrs Braverman’s Cheesecake from Mama’s Little Bakery. No ordinary cheesecake, this original creation is plated with berries, layered with a passionfruit meringue and topped with popping candy and candied walnuts. With each bite, you can taste the light cheesecake paired with a fruity bite and a sort of fizzness from the popping candy. A delectable dessert that will you wishing you could have just another slice!
Central Perk Singapore has stayed true to its tv counterpart and a menu that serves up traditional dishes with its own unique twist. Casual or mega fan, either way, you’re going to enjoy spending hours here with your FRIENDS.

Secrets From Experts: Tips On Buying The Right Furniture & Personalising Your Home
You know what they say, there ain’t no place like home! And for good reason too, because when you shop at Tan Boon Liat, your crib is gonna be pretty hard to beat.
[caption id="attachment_18880" align="alignnone" width="580"] Ethnicraft Online (#02-01) takes the cake for quality and durable furniture.Retailing modern, solid teak, walnut and oak wood pieces designed in Belgium, their furniture is also known for its environmental stewardship and ethical craftsmanship.
[caption id="attachment_18881" align="alignnone" width="970"] Ethnicraft Online[/caption]What’s more, they provide lifetime warranty and lifetime maintenance service on all products.
Tip: To ensure that your pieces live to a ripe old age, it’s best to look for pieces from reputable, well-established brands or companies. These pieces are fumigated to ensure the absence of mould and pests, and kiln-dried to minimize the risk of warping and cracking. Last but not least, make sure your purchase is covered by a product warranty or after-sales maintenance services.
2) Purchase modular pieces to mix and match, and furniture designed with extra functionality in mind
Pieces that can be taken apart and re-arranged will increase their mileage as you assemble them to create an infinite number of new looks.
For instance, the Theo Wall Unit from Journey East (#03-02) is the master of all trades.
Tip: A module-based system gives homeowners the power to customise the furniture based on their needs.
[caption id="attachment_18882" align="alignnone" width="1800"] Journey East[/caption]Where space constraint is the name of the game, this versatile piece contains modular units that can be taken apart, or combined together in a multitude of ways to fit any space. Plus, it’s made of hard-fumed oak, which translates to high quality.
Next up is the PLAYplay collection from Journey East as well.
Designed by award-winning design studio Lanzavecchia + Wai for Journey East, each piece was carefully conceptualised with the modern home in mind; in terms of design, proportion, and functionality.
Hamburger Side Table
These colourful little “hamburgers” are sure to be conversational starters.

Neatly hidden when not in use, no one will be any the wiser when you whip out this party trick.
3. Seek out items with high transformative value and small price tags
Tip: A little goes a long way. Here’s why – small accessories can play up the value of a piece of furniture, transforming a cut-rate table to one that looks like a big-ticket item straight out of a designer showroom.
For home accessories, head to Arete Culture (#06-01), Make Room (#11-09B), or Plain Vanilla Home (#08-06). Bang-for-your-buck accessories include:
- Flowers: Arete Culture stocks a wide range of high-quality artificial flowers that require no maintenance, and they can even be washed.
[caption id="attachment_18924" align="alignnone" width="3344"] Floral Kokoro.
[caption id="attachment_18926" align="alignnone" width="600"] Cochine, Maison by Amanda Dyer, and Park London.
[caption id="attachment_18911" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Cochine Candles[/caption]
- Trays: Trays are always useful when entertaining at a house party or serving dinner guests. Featured below are Ethnicraft Online’s Notre Monde Trays, which are individually hand-crafted and double as pieces of art.
[caption id="attachment_18930" align="alignnone" width="3362"] Ethnicraft Online‘s Notre Monde Tribal Quest Trays[/caption]
4. Collect meaningful memorabilia and make full use of Nature’s gifts to personalise your home
To go about making your home the most beautiful place on earth:
- Travel mementoes and personal memorabilia are a fun way of incorporating your personality throughout the home!
Tip: The trick is to edit: Display only your absolute favourites.
[caption id="attachment_18912" align="alignnone" width="650"] Pinterest[/caption]
- Pick a wall and paint a mural or a statement colour. You can also wallpaper it.
[caption id="attachment_18920" align="alignnone" width="600"]
Bring the outdoors in: Natural touches such as branches and shells are an elegant way of adding more organic textures and shapes to your home. This lends a tranquil touch to a visually-interesting space.
[caption id="attachment_18928" align="alignnone" width="455"] Pinterest[/caption]
Bonus Tip: How to Doll Up Your Home for the Christmas Season
- For some holiday cheer, all you need is a little sparkle. Create a simple but stunning table centerpiece with some tree branches in vase, which you can spray paint or decorate with Christmas baubles.
- To spice things up for the Christmas season, fill up a clear bottle or vase with festive items e.g. coloured eggs for Easter, and pussy willow for Chinese New Year.
The best part? Make Room currently has a collection of Christmas items, such as recycled wooden Christmas trees and a wide range of Christmas décor.
To keep things sophisticated, stick to the same colour family. Silvers and golds add a touch of glamour, and red is a good idea for the season.
[caption id="attachment_18932" align="alignnone" width="554"] Pinterest[/caption]
To lend your home a burst of character, do also drop by Singapore Trading Post (#07-01) or FairPrice Antique (#01-10) for fun and eclectic accessories.

Perfectly Nailing It! This Lacquer Bar Can Make Any Nail Polish Colour You Want
Nail Deck – you could call it a nail polish GPS – guiding you to that oh-so-specific hue of nail paint you’ve been lusting over. Or better yet, think of it as the Shazam of nail polishes.
[caption id="attachment_18467" align="alignnone" width="750"] Nail Deck TechinAsia[/caption][caption id="attachment_18468" align="alignnone" width="750"] Nail Deck TechinAsia[/caption]
Not only will homegrown , it’s the real life version of the virtual Nail Deck app.
[embed]Nestled in acclaimed nail salon, esBoudoir, in Vivo City, customers can watch their perfect nail colour being mixed by hand.
Despite being tailor-made to cater to your wildest whims, a 5-ml bottle of your desired colour only costs $11, while a 10-ml bottle goes for $16.
From 17 October 2016 to 31 December 2016, feel free to bring in discontinued lacquer and a picture or an item of colour you wish to bottle. Within 10 minutes, Lacquer Bar will have that colour blended and packaged like a genie in a bottle.
If you have no colour in mind, the colourist will most gladly assist you.
Our Experience at the Lacquer Bar
We popped by, and were blown away by the warmth of the colourist in session and the staffs’ level of professionalism.
For the first time in our lives, we felt as though we were peeking behind a magician’s curtain.
Except, instead of pulling rabbits out of hats, we were creating concoctions that went onto our nails.
[video width="960" height="540" m4v="https://discoversg.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/large.m4v"][/video]At the lacquer bar, we had an impromptu flash of inspiration from a pair of beloved faded denim shorts.
During our one-on-one consultation with the colourist, we asked for the nail polish colour to resemble “old jeans”, an all-time comfort wear close to our hearts.
We pointed at a sky blue pamphlet close by for reference, and requested for the colourist to “add a bit of grey into that blue”.
The Science of Beauty
Now, here’s where some technical jargon comes in.
The colourist used a device, called a spectrometer, to analyse the colour of the pamphlet and pick out the exact shade of blue on it. After that, the spectrometer used an in-house algorithm to convert the digital colour to a formula. How cool is that?
From there, the colourist used chemistry laboratory equipment to blend the colours by hand.
After the colours were blended, we were given small samples to test on our nails, under white and warm lights respectively.
We thought that this was especially thoughtful of them!
This countered one of our greatest worries as discerning nail polish buyers.
Our major pet peeve when buying a nail polish, is when it turns out looking like a new colour under a different lighting from the one we tried it under. Say, when it looks like a lovely violet indoors but ends up like a Barney purple outdoors.
Once the colourist had finished making adjustments to the hue, he bottled up the lovely shade for us.
FYI, never be afraid of commenting on the colour, because the Lacquer Bar accurately tailors your polish according to all the information you tell the colourist.
We even got to name our newly-created colour! We called it “Ripped Jeans” because we’ll always be rebels at heart.
Our ambassador, Diana, also visited the Lacquer Bar! Here’s what she had to say:

Modus Operandi
Lacquer Bar keeps a record of every colour made by any customer, so you can always go back to purchase a colour you previously created.
To shake things up, the Lacquer Bar comes up with new colours every month. This November, their signature colour is a sumptuous dark plum, heralding the start of the winter season.
According to the colourist, Tiffany Blue and nude hues are the most popular nail polish shades created at the Lacquer Bar. Just so you know, this is where you can lay your hands (and nails) on them!
What is in the Works
Though crème is the only finish available at the moment, other finishes such as shimmer and glitter will be unleashed very soon.
Currently, the Lacquer Bar has an internal catalogue and a database of every colour they’ve ever made. Yes, yours and ours too.
We’re over the moon to know that they’re working on a catalogue for customers to choose colours and derive inspiration from.
Last but not least, Lacquer Bar’s upcoming Collaboration Collection will see them cooperating with local businesses and iconic personalities, so stay tuned!

Grow Your Own Edible Garden
Amoy St Bloc Party is not all about eating, drinking and dancing.
Besides taking home Instagram moments, you’ll head back with skills of growing your own edible garden.

In-Car Party With Jeep
The best part of all, you can hop on the Jeep Wrangler and it will take you on a ride around the block!

While you’re at it, don’t forget to try their cocktails too.
2. boCHINChe
Fuelled by chef Diego Jacquet, boCHINChe is all about bold Argentinean flavours.
[caption id="attachment_17692" align="alignnone" width="593"] Image source: bochinchesg[/caption]Just like us, Argentina is a melting pot of cultures and Argentineans loveeee their food. boCHINChe’s passion is reflected on their menu, prepare your palate for an explosion of flavours.
3. Employees Only (Cocktail Bar)
What?? A craft cocktail bar from New York is in Singapore?
[caption id="attachment_17693" align="alignnone" width="597"] Image source: asia.cocktails[/caption]Yes, and it’s one with unpretentious NY vibes, buzzing energy, shoulder shaking music, and mighty fine cocktail techniques (that’s what they’re famed for).
The place can get really busy but trust us, it’s worth the wait.
4. Le Binchotan
What do you get when you combine French and Japanese cuisine? Le Binchotan!
[caption id="attachment_17697" align="alignnone" width="594"] Image source: Frannywanny[/caption]Named after the white charcoal used to smoke French-Japanese tapas, this super chic eatery dishes some of the best skewers in town.
There’ll be 10% off selected sake bottles in conjunction with the Bloc party! Now, that calls for a Kampai!
5. Burger Joint
Dubbed the best burger in NYC, Burger Joint is all about yummy burgers done to perfection!
[caption id="attachment_17698" align="alignnone" width="480"] Image source: Kendricljx[/caption]From cheese to portobello, and of course, bacon burger, their patties are extremely juicy and well seasoned. Top if off with craft beer (there’s a selection of 16 taps!) and that’s how every day should end.
6. Maggie Joan’s
Looking for Maggie Joan’s can be a lil tricky. It’s an underground Mediterranean restaurant located in the alleyway just off Gemmill Lane (literally a hidden gem).
[caption id="attachment_17699" align="alignnone" width="601"] Image source: glen_ballis_autopiloton[/caption]Famed for their cosy ambience and gastronomical food, every dish here is so pretty that you’ll want to feed your camera first before digging in.
7. Gemmills
Gemmills has a split personality – it’s a cafe by day and a wine bar by night.
[caption id="attachment_17700" align="alignnone" width="597"] Image source: The Silver Chef[/caption]Expect a range of fresh pastries, sandwiches and coffee during the day and once the sun is down, bring the vinos out!
8. Birds of a Feather
Sichuan food can be a little intimidating. Just thinking about the flower pepper gives us chills!
[caption id="attachment_17702" align="alignnone" width="540"] Image source: Bing_leow[/caption]But at Birds of Feather, the Sichuan-ness actually enhances the flavours of the Western cuisine served. And the ambience there will make you feel like you’re in Chengdu… well, minus the giant panda bears!
Party All Night
The event might start at 3pm, but once the sun is down (10pm onwards), step into Ding Dong as the playful restaurant space is reimagined into a retro dance floor on this day!
[caption id="attachment_17705" align="alignnone" width="776"] Image source: Ding Dong[/caption]Bust a move to 80s and 90s hits at the afterparty and get a Ding Dong Daiquiri or two while you hit that high!

Meat Lovers, Renga-Ya’s Hokkaido and Kagoshima Beef Are All You Need!
Meat lovers, listen up! Think you’ve tried the best Japanese beef Singapore has got to offer? Renga-Ya is here to top your must-try Wagyu list.
[caption id="attachment_18143" align="alignnone" width="932"] Party Platter[/caption]Rejoice, because Renga-Ya Japanese BBQ & Steak Restaurant has officially opened its doors at Chijmes. And they’ll be dishing the best of beef from the prefectures of Hokkaido and Kagoshima.
Oakleaf Hokkaido Prime Beef
All Oakleaf prime beef served in Renga-Ya is carefully sourced from Hokkaido.
[caption id="attachment_18136" align="alignnone" width="851"] Hokkaido Platter[/caption]The cows there are breed naturally without the use of antibiotics and genetically modified feed. Instead, herbs are mixed to the feed, so the meat has a natural refreshing flavour.
Kuroge A5 Grade Wagyu
Kagoshima may be well known for its active volcano but their Kuroge (Black Hair) beef is definitely a MUST TRY among meat lovers.
[caption id="attachment_18137" align="alignnone" width="852"] Kagoshima Platter[/caption]What makes it really special is the well-balanced fat marbling and full-bodied flavour of the meat.
Beef Two Ways
Renga-Ya is as much a Yakiniku restaurant as a steak house.
As they import whole cows from Hokkaido and Kagoshima, diners can look forward to a wide-range of cuts in Japanese BBQ or flamed-grilled style.
[caption id="attachment_18134" align="alignnone" width="837"] Renga Ya Platter[/caption]We highly recommend the Renga- Ya BBQ Platter (300g at $89.00 and 500g at $139.00) if you’d like to savour the best of both worlds (50:50 of Oakleaf and Wagyu).
[caption id="attachment_18140" align="alignnone" width="923"] Renga Ya Zen Set[/caption]The Karubi (short rib) and Jou Rosu (chuck roll) are hands down our favourite.
Cut to precise thickness, it’s so tender that it melts in your mouth!
[caption id="attachment_18144" align="alignnone" width="960"] Hokkaido Steak Image source Renga-Ya[/caption]Steak lovers, you can try the juicy Hokkaido or Kagoshima striploin (200g at $89.00), ribeye (200g at $59.00) or tenderloin (200g at $69.00), complemented with a choice of in-house steak sauce, ponzu radish sauce or peppercorn sauce.
Side Dishes That Are To Die For!
Main star aside, Renga-Ya also specialises in other dishes such as the Hokkaido Beef Tataki with Japanese Onions and Beef Carpaccio, which is eaten raw.
[caption id="attachment_18138" align="alignnone" width="749"] Beef Tataki[/caption]The Oyster dish is a must try if you’d like to heighten your dining experience.
[caption id="attachment_18141" align="alignnone" width="781"] Oysters[/caption]Featuring succulent oysters imported from Hiroshima and seasonal vegetables from Hokkaido, this dish will make you feel less guilty from the overload of meat.
[caption id="attachment_18142" align="alignnone" width="904"] Ika Yuzu Jelly Watercress Salad[/caption]While you’re at it, don’t forget to order the super refreshing Ika Yuzu Jelly Watercress Salad. The acidity of the Yuzu jelly goes extremely well with the watercress, it’s like summer in your mouth.

10 Labels You Need To Know From Singapore Fashion Week 2016
The orgy of high fashion hit all the right notes this year at Singapore Fashion Week 2016. Held at the National Gallery, this year’s style extravaganza topped last year’s venue at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.
During the 5-day fashion festival (26 – 30 Oct), the spotlight was trained on an eclectic mix of Asian designers whose collections were showcased on not just one, but two different stages.
This year’s highlights
Indeed, the highlight of this year’s Singapore Fashion Week was none other than its emphasis on Asia; be it Asian-born designers, or designers based in Asia.
Out of nearly 22 featured creations, 20 in the show were from Asian designers – the greatest number in all of 15 years.
This was a distinct departure from the previous year, where American designer Diane von Furstenberg opened the show, and British style meister,Victoria Beckham, closed it.
Today, we bring you a quick round-up of some noteworthy designers at this year’s Singapore Fashion Week and their spectacular collections!
1. Day 1 – Guo Pei opens the event
Kicking off the event on the main stage was designer Guo Pei.
The Chinese born-and-raised dressmaker is best known for dolling Rihanna up in a canary-yellow, floor-trailing gown during the MOMA 2015.
