Hokkien 101 – Words And Phrases You Can Use Everyday Without Getting Slapped

hokkien lingo

Hello, ho seh bo? I’m Ian, DiscoverSG’s leading Hokkien speaker.

Singapore is home to many dialect groups, but one of the most common one is probably Hokkien.

If you grew up in Singapore, you’ve definitely heard Hokkien being spoken around you, whether you’re aware of it or not.

The place where Hokkien is most prevalent is the humble kopitiam, where the elderly chatter fluently in the dialect.

If you don’t understand a single word of it, or if your Hokkien is limited to the expletives, then allow me to teach you some simple words and phrases that you can use daily.

Trust me, I spoke Hokkien before I learnt English.

1. Ai and Mai

These are your most basic words.

Ai, means “want”. Whereas, Mai, means “don’t want”.

[caption id="attachment_35713" align="aligncenter" width="245"]hokkien lingo GIF Credit: giphy[/caption]

So, in future, if you’re bombarded with a sentence in Hokkien and you’re not sure, just say Mai and spare yourself the embarrassment.

2. Ai Mai?

You’ve probably heard or even used it before.

Ai Mai, a combination of the previous 2 words, is usually used as a question to ask if you want something or not?

[caption id="attachment_35714" align="aligncenter" width="320"]hokkien lingo GIF Credit: giphy[/caption]

Example: “We’re going to have supper after karaoke. Join us ah. Ai mai?”

3. Chut Mng

Chut Mng is a term that’s used by the older generation that means “heading out” or “going out”.

[caption id="attachment_35715" align="aligncenter" width="480"]hokkien lingo GIF Credit: giphy[/caption]

Example: “Ah boy, where you going? Everyday see you chut mng, you think my house is hotel is it?”

4. Tit Toh

Stop giggling. Tit Toh is somewhat similar to Chut Mng, but its meaning is closer to “jalan jalan” or going out to have fun.

Example: “Everyday chut mng tit toh, you a lot of money to spend is it?”

5. Jiak Hong

Jiak Hong literally translates into “eating air”.

[caption id="attachment_35716" align="aligncenter" width="500"]hokkien lingo GIF Credit: giphy[/caption]

The real meaning of the word is “to travel” or “holidaying”.

Example: “Eh I saw Alex’s Instagram Story, he go to Switzerland to jiak hong or for exchange?”

6. Dng Chu

Dng Chu means to “go home”.

[caption id="attachment_35717" align="aligncenter" width="480"]hokkien lingo GIF Credit: giphy[/caption]

Example: “Eh guys I’m gonna dng chu already. Y’all have fun.”

7. Lor Hor

Lor Hor translates to “raining”.

[caption id="attachment_35718" align="aligncenter" width="845"]hokkien lingo GIF Credit: giphy[/caption]

Example: “AH BOY FASTER HELP ME KEEP THE LAUNDRY!!! LOR HOR ALREADY!!!”

8. Jiak Png

Jiak Png is probably one of the most used Hokkien phrases. It directly translates to “eat rice” but it’s used to mean “have lunch/dinner” or “to eat”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYgr3lK_7VA

Example: “Eh it’s 1pm already. Let’s go jiak png.”

9. Kun

Kun, in this case, does not refer to the Japanese honorific for boys. In Hokkien, it means “to sleep”.

[caption id="attachment_35719" align="aligncenter" width="380"]hokkien lingo GIF Credit: giphy[/caption]

Example: “This lecturer talk so slowly. I want to kun already.”

10. Ho Seh Bo?

Ho Seh Bo is a greeting which means “How are you?” However, this would be better used when speaking to someone who is of the same age, or younger.

When speaking to an elder, you should be using Li Ho Bo which means “Are you well?”

Example: “Wah bro, long time no see. Ho seh bo?”

11. Eh Sai and Buay Sai

Singaporeans who speak Hokkien love to use these. Eh Sai means “can”, and Buay Sai means “cannot”.

Example:

A: “Can I borrow your pen?”

B: “Eh sai.”

OR

A: “Can I borrow your pen?”

B: “Buay sai, cos I only have one.”

However, if you’re using Eh Sai in the context of “can or not”, then Eh Sai needs to be complemented with “Buay” at the end. The sentence would be something like this.

Example:

A: “Eh you not using your pen. I borrow ah? Eh sai buay?

B: “Eh sai. Take lor.”

12. Kah Kin

Kah Kin means ” to hurry up”. If you’re a sloth, you might’ve heard this used on you more than a few times.

Example: “Eh you very slow, the movie going to start already. Can you kah kin anot?”

So there you have it. Hokkien words and phrases that you can use daily. Feel free to pepper your sentences when speaking with your grandparents for that bit of extra.

Also please don’t let Hokkien die out as a dialect. Pass it on.

Chendol Mr Softee Makes A Sneaky Comeback In Selected 7-11 Stores

Mr Softee

7-11 used to be a snack wonderland, with microwaveable sandwiches and pastas, instant noodle prep stations, Craze Hottis, Maggi mashed potatoes, and the OG soft serve of Singapore, Mr Softee.

Mr Softee was THE DESSERT of my childhood. But like the Avatar, it disappeared when I (and the rest of Singapore) needed it most.

[caption id="attachment_35530" align="aligncenter" width="900"]Mr Softee Image Credit: Twitter User Xavier Lur[/caption]

However, it wouldn’t be gone for too long, because now it’s BACK!

Ice Cream, You Scream For Mr Softee

Mr Softee made a quiet return to Singapore, with a nifty soft serve machine sitting in a 7-11 outlet at Bencoolen, near Ibis Hotel, churning cups of Chendol-flavoured Mr Softee soft serves.

[caption id="attachment_35526" align="aligncenter" width="1066"]Mr Softee Image Credit: Google Maps[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_35527" align="aligncenter" width="1636"] Image Credit: Twitter User Xavier Lur[/caption]

However this isn’t the first sighting we’ve had of Mr Softee since its sudden disappearance in the late 2000s.

Back in January this year, people found that the Vanilla Mr Softee was available in selected 7-11 outlets across the island.

Now this one only sells the local favourite, Chendol-flavoured soft serve at just $1.50 a cup. Though to be honest, it looks like it shrunk in the wash.

[caption id="attachment_35528" align="aligncenter" width="1396"]Mr Softee Image Credit: Twitter User Xavier Lur[/caption]

Like excuse me? Your price didn’t increase, good for you. But the serving size really dipped.

[caption id="attachment_35529" align="aligncenter" width="1540"]Mr Softee Image Credit: Twitter User Xavier Lur[/caption]

But I guess, no price increase is better than nothing. So I shall refrain from complaining too much.

7-Eleven has made a very special announcement regarding their fan-favourite ice-cream.

[caption id="attachment_37735" align="aligncenter" width="1360"] Image Credit: 7-Eleven[/caption]

From 3 – 16 October, Mr Softee’s cendol ice-cream will be going at 2 for $2 only! So grab a dessert buddy and eat to your heart’s content, or eat both if that’s how you roll.

While the weather these days is more suited to hot pot dinners and warm comforting soups, I will brave the rain and the subsequent shivers for Mr Softee.

I will not forsake him like he did to all Singaporeans.

Cravings aside, if like me, you’re seeking for a cup of Mr Softee, here’s are the selected outlets to get your cravings fixed:

A Warm Bowl Of Spinach Soup Fixes Everything, And You Can Get One At Just $3.50

Spinach Soup

Unlike most kids, I grew up with a huge love for vegetables. I could never relate to children in movies or storybooks, shunning broccoli and carrots like it’s the plague.

You won’t finish your broccoli? I’ll do it for you. Carrots too? Send them over. From cabbage to kai lan to boy choy, I loved them all.

But there was one particular vegetable that holds a special place in my heart – Spinach.

[caption id="attachment_35436" align="aligncenter" width="450"]Spinach Soup Image Credit: Spinach Soup Image Credit: Spinach Soup Image Credit: Burppler Jessica[/caption]

Despite the difference in ingredients, BOTH soups are priced at $3.50 which is incredibly cheap by today’s living standards.

The Spinach Century & Salted Egg has almost the same ingredients as the Poached Spinach in Superior broth with 3 eggs (egg, century egg and salted egg) that you usually find in upscale Chinese restaurants.

[caption id="attachment_35438" align="aligncenter" width="645"]Spinach Soup Image Credit: Burppler Jackson Sim[/caption]

While the soup is good on its own (for me at least. Spinach is actually quite filling okay.), you can choose to top up $0.50 for either thick or thin bee hoon, macaroni or white rice, or $1 for brown rice.

[caption id="attachment_35439" align="aligncenter" width="645"]Spinach Soup Image Credit: Burppler Maureen Ow[/caption]

That’s not all, you also have to the option to add-on more ingredients from $0.50 to $2.

In total, your meal might just cost you less than $4!

So while Amoy Street Food Centre is a treasure trove of food, Spinach Soup should not be overlooked because some days (mainly the bad ones), all you really need is a good, hot bowl of spinach soup.

Because soup doesn’t let you down.

This App Will Be Your Cheatsheet When Bae Asks You, “Where Should We Go Ah?”

Date Out

Dating is tough these days.

If it’s not a movie date, it’s a dinner and shopping. While there’s nothing wrong with that, sometimes having variety isn’t a bad thing.

After all, variety IS the spice of life. But if you’re fickle or indecisive and cannot seem to make up your mind on what to do, there’s an app to help you with that.

Date Out

While I’m sure that binge-watching seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Netflix is entertaining (it really is. It’s a great series), your partner might not think so.

*cue infomercial music* Getting bored of staying home? Finding it hard to go on interesting dates? Introducing Date Out! This brand new application curates a selection of date activities, unique experiences, and even gift ideas for couples! *cut music*

[caption id="attachment_35192" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Date Out Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Okay, you get the point. So, despite my singlehood, I downloaded the app to check it out, FOR JOURNALISM!

The app has 5 different categories of experiences – Workshops, Sports & Adventure, Personalised Gifts, Intimate Gifts, and Flowers.

[caption id="attachment_35193" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Date Out Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption] [caption id="attachment_35194" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Date Out Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

At the moment, only 3 of the categories are populated with experiences. I mean, the app is very new, so give them some time.

Workshops

You can choose from Unicorn Cake workshops for 2, Terrarium workshops, Leather Crafting, and even Friday Night Themed Cooking workshops for 2!

[caption id="attachment_35195" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Date Out Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption] [caption id="attachment_35197" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Date Out Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Sports & Adventure

The Sports & Adventure category currently has Go-Karting activities, Segway guided tours, escape rooms, combat saber experience, and many more!

[caption id="attachment_35198" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Date Out Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption] [caption id="attachment_35199" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Date Out Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Personalised Gifts

The Personalised Gifts category offers customised stamps, candles, personalised jewellery and even customised wood watches for couples!

[caption id="attachment_35200" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Date Out Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption] [caption id="attachment_35201" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Date Out Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

I guess we’ll have to wait for them to find more vendors and update the remaining categories, Intimate Gifts and Flowers.

For those of you wondering what “Intimate Gifts” is going to include, I can only say this, the app asked if I was above the age of 18.

If you purchased a gift or flowers via the app, you will be able to track your orders and see your order history within the app.

The app even tracks your current location and every workshop listed in the app currently, is displayed on the map as a gift box, so you know where to go.

They Didn’t Forget The Singles

Also, while the app is primarily targeted at couples, it can also cater to friends who are looking for unique activities to do in Singapore.

Date Out offers a comprehensive reward system, where regular users can accumulate points and redeem them for tickets or curated events.

Every “experience” you book or gift you buy via the app, will entitle you to 5 Date Out points.

The rewards that are redeemable with Date Out points at the moment include Starbucks vouchers, a pair of Golden Village movie tickets, and Capital Land vouchers.

[caption id="attachment_35202" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Date Out Image Credit: DiscoverSG[/caption]

Date Out can now be downloaded for free on iTunes and Google Play and online at their 15 Things Only S’porean 90s Kids Will Remember From Their School Days

(Header Image Source: There’s A Sushi Joint At Yishun Town Square With Prices From $1/PlateOne Sushi

Growing up, my first introduction to the world of Japanese cuisine was at the first Genki Sushi outlet at FORUM The Shopping Mall. It was quite an experience, because the food comes (and goes) on a conveyor belt right next to your table. Don’t even get me started on the tabletop hot water dispenser.

[caption id="attachment_35056" align="aligncenter" width="4288"]One Sushi Image Credit: Man Abroad[/caption]

Genki Sushi might have been one of the first sushi restaurants to bring the conveyor belt concept to Singapore, but it has since been adopted by many other sushi restaurants to the point where it has almost become a sushi-specific concept.

Now, this new sushi restaurant in Yishun Town Square combines 2 of the sushi dining concepts we’ve seen before, into 1 sushi restaurant.

[caption id="attachment_35052" align="aligncenter" width="1600"]One Sushi Image Credit: One Sushi[/caption]

Introducing One Sushi.

Home-grown Sushi Restaurant

Their two-tiered conveyor belt features a regular sushi conveyor belt on the bottom, while the top tier is a “track” for “sushi cars” to deliver the sushi that you order à la carte via the iPad.

[caption id="attachment_35053" align="aligncenter" width="1600"]One Sushi Image Credit: One Sushi[/caption]

You know the way your food comes to you at Genki Sushi? In the trains? One Sushi uses “cars” instead. It’s quite fun to see your food zoom towards you.

That’s not all, the sushi conveyor belt allows diners to choose from 50 different yellow-plated sushi at just $1.50 per plate! (That’s Sushi Express’ price OMG)

If you love Ikura (salmon roe), One Sushi’s Ikura Gunkan is permanently available at $1. Another value-for-money item on the menu is the Uni Sushi at just $1.50. $1.50 for Uni (Sea Urchin) is unheard of.

[caption id="attachment_35054" align="aligncenter" width="1600"]One Sushi Image Credit: One Sushi[/caption]

Planning to order from their à la carte menu? Go for the Hamachi Kama ($13.80). One Sushi uses fresh Hamachi Kama from Japan. Hamachi Kama is the collar of Yellowtail fish. Each fish has 2 and it is usually the most fatty part of the fish.

Don’t like fish? (Why are you at a SUSHI restaurant?) Try the Hotate Mentai ($4.80) which sees scallops served in-shell, topped with a generous dollop of mentaiko that’s been blowtorched for that charred savoury finish.

One Sushi looks promising for a new and upcoming sushi restaurant. For the aunties and mothers out there, the green tea and wet tissue are free of charge. Just saying.

[caption id="attachment_35055" align="aligncenter" width="480"]One Sushi GIF Credit: giphy[/caption]

Lastly, every month, they will select and feature 1 sushi in the $1 category so be sure to check with the staff!

So….sushi for dinner anyone?

Why Book A Hotel Room When You Can Party On A Yacht For The Same Price?

Boat parties have long been an activity favoured by the high SES demographic.

There’s something about being on the ‘high’ SES (read: seas) that makes a party appear more lavish than it seems. Is it the sun or the sea breeze?

But that’s beside the point. Did you know that you can now rent a yacht for the same price as booking a lavish hotel suite?

[caption id="attachment_34697" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Image Credit: GRVTY Media[/caption]

However, there are a few problems with the current process of renting a yacht in Singapore.

Firstly, finding a yacht owner who is willing to rent their yacht. The current process is to trawl forums or find a yacht owner by word of mouth.

Next is finding one that suits your budget and occasion.

This tiresome process is time-consuming and might ultimately come to naught in the end.

This is where Yachtly comes in.

Yachtly is Singapore’s first yacht rental platform perfect for a wide range of occasions and budgets.

It allows you to take your parties and special events out to sea, all while making the process of booking a yacht seamless and effortless.

Sailing Yachtly On The High Seas

I have to admit I’m a bit of a “suaku”. I’ve never been on a yacht in my life unless you count the Tekong ‘Penguin’ Ferry. Never thought the first time I board one will be for an office yacht party.

We boarded the yacht, a gorgeous Leopard 51 Power Catamaran, at One Degree 15 Marina.

[caption id="attachment_34700" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_34710" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption]

The first thing I noticed was the food.

Stacked trays of beehoon, fried rice, chicken wings, stir fried vegetables and samosas on the table at the back of the yacht.

Apparently, Yachtly has partnered with Halal-certified catering companies such as Neo Group and EZBBQ to provide either cooked food or barbecue food.

And that’s not all, some of the yachts might even provide complimentary BBQ services or BBQ rentals at a nominal fee.

You can also choose to bring your own food and alcohol on board. They even have a small fridge and microwave for you to store and heat up your food!

Just take special care and dispose your rubbish properly and NOT in the sea.

Now, being the “suaku” that I am, I scrambled up to the top deck and heaved a sigh of relief. It was better than I expected – breezy, spacious and scenic.

[caption id="attachment_34701" align="aligncenter" width="1109"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption]

After the captain laid the ground rules on board the yacht (No littering, no food, drinks, and wet people in the cabin etc.), we set sail out of the Marina and onto the high seas!

The water might be choppier on certain days outside of the Marina so ALWAYS follow the safety rules on board the yacht.

So away we sailed towards Lazarus Island and dropped anchor within the cove, safely tucked away behind the island where the big scary waves can’t rock this yacht.

[caption id="attachment_34711" align="aligncenter" width="480"] GIF Credit: GRVTY Media[/caption]

Armed with a large unicorn float and the inflatable slide on board, one by one we jumped in.

[caption id="attachment_34708" align="aligncenter" width="480"] GIF Credit: GRVTY Media[/caption]

Not me. I was lying on the upper deck watching the sun set and the clouds go by.

If you’re wondering where the girls showered and changed, the yacht has 2 decent-sized bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

When the sun set, we had dinner and we heard a shriek. Someone found the karaoke machine in the cabin.

[caption id="attachment_34706" align="aligncenter" width="1109"] Image Credit: Yachtly[/caption]

The rest of the night’s activities comprised mainly of singing. Some in the cabin with the karaoke machine, and most of us on the upper deck with the acoustic guitar.

As we sang the night away, our yacht set sail towards Marina Bay Sands for a glorious view of the Singapore city skyline before looping back to One Degree 15 Marina.

These 10 Bakeries In S’pore Serve The Best Bread – And They All Deserve A Toast

Bread is incredibly versatile yet somehow underrated. There’s even a word created solely to describe someone who supports the family (with bread probably). BREADWINNER.

As someone who ranks bread as the top carb of choice, I have pretty strong feelings for bread.

[caption id="attachment_34415" align="aligncenter" width="245"] GIF Credit: GIF Credit: GIF Credit: Image Credit: Konditori – Artisan European Bakery[/caption]

They have everything from tarts and cakes to traditional Swedish pastries and of course, bread. If you’re a sucker for a good brioche or croissant, then you should try the ones here.

[caption id="attachment_34420" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Konditori – Artisan European Bakery[/caption]

Oh, they have this divine Cranberry Cream Cheese Bagel that you NEED to try as well.

If you’re wondering, Konditori is Muslim-owned.

This Muslim-owned bakery has a selection of both savoury and sweet sourdough toasts.

Go for their Nut Butter With Honey And Sea Salt Toast ($3.50). A thick slice of sourdough toast is slathered with almond butter, generously drizzled with honey and finished with a sprinkling of sea salt.

If you’re looking for something more savoury, their Egg Salad with Dukkah and Pickled Onions ($5) is a great option.

The thick sourdough toast is topped with a heap of egg salad and garnished with pickled onions.

3. Asanoya Boulangerie

Asanoya Boulangerie is a Japanese bakery specialising in gourmet bread and pastries. They combine Japanese flavours with traditional European pastries.

Their flagship item is the Fruit Rye made with orange peel, rum raisin, walnuts and almonds. Apparently it’s so popular in Karuizawa that it gets sold out the moment it is displayed on the shelves.

[caption id="attachment_34427" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Asanoya Bakery Singapore[/caption]

A popular item in Singapore is the Croissant Block that comes in various flavours. Like this Creme Brûlée Croissant Block, filled with fresh cream and topped with a caramelised sugar crust.

The donut is filled with custard (or jam) and dusted with sugar, yet somehow isn’t too sweet.

If you love your donuts as much I do, then this is it.

Carpenter & Cook is an artisan bakery cafe and vintage home store. While they technically don’t serve bread, they do have amazing pastries.

Go for their Passionfruit Meringue Tart ($6.80). This beautiful dainty tart is almost too pretty to eat.

The passionfruit’s zest cuts through the sweetness of the tart and meringue so it’s not jelak.

7. Tiong Bahru Bakery

If you have not tried anything from Tiong Bahru Bakery, have you truly been living?

While the cafe serves up a large variety of bread and pastries, baked fresh daily, their bestseller is the Kouign Amann.

[caption id="attachment_34431" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Tiong Bahru Bakery[/caption]

The name ‘Kouign Amann‘ is derived from the Breton words for cake (kouign) and butter (amann). This pastry is rich yet not saccharine.

I usually buy in bulk because why not? (Actually it’s because there’s no Tiong Bahru Bakery near my place)

But my point is that the Kouign Amann here is AMAZING. Don’t say ‘never intro’.

Keong Saik Bakery is riding the ‘Dirty Bun’ wave pretty hard.

Their recent ‘Dirty Bun’ creations include the Matcha Dirty Bread ($4.50) and the Chocolate Dirty Bread ($4).

If you’re done with the ‘Dirty Bun’ trend like I am, go for the Keong Saik Bakery signature, the Sor Hei ($3.80).

It’s a black and white danish pastry filled with chocolate chips between the layers. Reminds me of the seaweed chicken I used to buy in the school canteen.

Best to come early for the Sor Hei because it gets sold out very quickly.

9. Swee Heng 1989 Bakery

Swee Heng 1989 Bakery is one of my favourites. I’ve had their bread for dinner on countless occasions because why not?

[caption id="attachment_34437" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Swee Heng 1989 Classic[/caption]

They use fresh ingredients and they have unique flavours for their bread. My favourite is the Mrs. Red Bean which is a red bean bun with cream cheese and a polo bun crust.

[caption id="attachment_34435" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: Swee Heng 1989[/caption]

The Rocky Chocolate is also really good.

[caption id="attachment_34436" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: Swee Heng 1989[/caption]

Chocolate bread peppered with walnuts and raisins. It’s very chocolatey and rich. Drink lots of water after because while the bread is really good, it does leave your throat a little dry.

Tai Cheong Bakery is well known for their HK Egg Tarts. There’s even a Pandan variation.

While their HK Egg Tarts hog the spotlight, another must-try is the HK Polo Bun.

These Steamboat Spots In S’pore Confirm Will Make You Steaaammm

Hai Di Lao is arguably the most popular steamboat spot in Singapore. They’ve been drawing crowds with their insanely good tomato broths and noodle-bending staff.

However, while Hai Di Lao is great, I refuse to wait over an hour just for a table. Especially when I’m hungry. Here’s a list of great alternatives to satisfy that steamboat craving.

1. JPOT

JPOT only offers individual hotpots, which is great because I’m picky when it comes to the ingredients that goes into my hotpot.

They offer a wide variety of ingredients and 9 different soup bases. My personal favourites are the Tom Yum Soup and the JPOT Superior Broth.

[caption id="attachment_34036" align="aligncenter" width="720"] Image Credit: JPOT[/caption]

The other unique soup bases include the LaksaChilli Crab Soup, Bak Kut Teh Soup, Fish Head Soup and Porridge. Yes, that’s right. You can choose to cook your ingredients in a pot of porridge.

[caption id="attachment_34035" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: JPOT[/caption]

You have to order their Wagyu Ribeye, Handmade Jumbo Pork Ball, and their Handmade Fish Balls. The marbling on the Wagyu Ribeye is perfect and is so tender it barely holds its form on my chopsticks.

The Handmade Fish Balls come in a platter of 6 and are different from the conventional fishballs. The fishballs are made fresh and you can actually taste the fish instead of just a generic fish paste. One platter is never enough.

You can view their complete menu here.

That’s not all, with 16 sauces and condiments available, you can create your own dips for your hotpot experience.

JPOT is the place to go if you’re looking for a genuinely good and fuss-free steamboat meal.

2. Shi Li Fang

Shi Li Fang is one of the few affordable steamboat places in Singapore.

[caption id="attachment_34038" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @agacialim[/caption]

They have a good variety of broths available. Choose from their Tonic Chicken Soup, Specialty Mala Soup, Beauty Chicken Collagen Soup, Nourishing Fish Soup, Ravishing Tomato Soup, and Tasty Mushroom Soup.

Their Specialty Mala Soup is actually milder and drinkable, unlike Hai Di Lao’s intense Mala broth.

Be sure to order their Japanese Kurobuta Pork, Japanese Wagyu Beef, and their Fish Roe ‘Glue’. The quality of the meat is surprisingly decent and the Fish Roe ‘Glue’ is a paste that has been incorporated generously with Fish Roe.

3. Beauty In The Pot

Beauty In The Pot is a hotpot concept that offers 2 signature broths – the Beauty Collagen Broth and Spicy Nourishing Soup.

The Beauty Collagen Broth is essentially Shark’s Cartilage Soup while the Spicy Nourishing Soup is a Pork Bone Soup with 3 levels of spiciness available.

[caption id="attachment_34041" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @pnakswasdi[/caption]

If you’re at the newer OneKM outlet, they offer 4 more broths besides the signature 2.

There’s the Herbal Drunk Chicken Broth, Cooling Coconut Broth, Longevity Wild Pine Mushroom Broth, and the Vitamin C Tomato Sweet Corn Broth.

Some of the must-order ingredients include their homemade Fish Tofu that is freshly prepared daily and is exclusive to Beauty In A Pot, as well as their Ebiko Prawn Paste that uses 100% fresh prawns.

3. The Royals Steakhouse

The Royals franchise started out as a dessert and cake shop along East Coast Road. As business grew, they continued to open restaurants all over the city.

The Royals Steakhouse started business in 2015, in a little shophouse unit along Jalan Pisang serving premium quality Halal steaks from Australia and New Zealand.

In fact, the steak here is so good that they separate the sauces from the meat so you can truly taste the original flavour of the steak.

The Tomahawk steak seems like something from The Flintstones, but this huge slab of steak is perfect for sharing with family.

Priced at $9.50 per 100g, the Tomahawk steak typically weighs between 1.3kg – 1.5kg. The price is such a steal however for a limited time only as it is an introductory offer for their Tomahawk.

[caption id="attachment_33831" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: The Royals Steakhouse Facebook[/caption]

Just look at the amount of meat!

Just in case you prefer something that isn’t too crazy, The Prime New Zealand Ribeye 200-220g ($28) is the perfect choice for you.

The ribeye is lightly dabbed with salt before grilling. The exterior is nicely charred while retaining a juicy red centre.

You’ll probably know Huber’s Butchery for supplying meat to restaurants around Singapore. However, did you know that you can dine in at Huber’s Bistro?

There’s not much options for steaks you can choose from however we do recommend you getting the U.S. Prime Sirloin Steak 220g ($28). It is served with a herb and butter flavoured brown sauce.

[caption id="attachment_33821" align="aligncenter" width="1290"] Image Credit: Burpple User Jaslyn Shannen Sim[/caption]

Les Bouchons is known for serving one of the best steak and fries in town. This quaint parisian style restaurant may be small but their steak frites are highly raved about.

Served medium rare, the Ribeye Steak Frites ($39.80) sports a crusty char and tender, juicy meat. At just $39.80, it is incredibly value for money.

7. GastroSmiths

GastroSmiths is a popular bistro that serves up unique fusions from various cuisines. They never fail to impress us with their interesting and quality cuisine.

They introduced the small plates concept that delivers huge bang for buck.

You can get the Angus 150 Day Grain-Fed Hanger Steak 200g for just $18! You can expect thick, meaty cuts of seared medium-rare steak bathed in collagen, garlic and meat juices.

This is definitely the most pocket-friendly option if you want to indulge in a good piece of steak without having to eat grass for the rest of the month.
