To put it bluntly, unless your last name is Kardashian or Trump, flying is not fun at all.
There’s nothing glamourous about being squished in between strangers in your seat, mediocre airplane food, or watching a movie an inch away from your face because the front passenger decided to recline their chair back into your lap.
But worse than all of that is what air travel does to your skin.
Travel is inherently stressful to your skin because of all the dry air. Whenever the environment is moisture-free (as with recirculated air in a plane cabin), the air actually draws moisture from wherever it can, including the skin. Dry skin will tend to get drier, and oily skin will get even oilier to compensate for dehydration.
Either way, you’re in for a breakout.
But that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s a peek into the less glamourous side of the overrated jetset life.
Woe #1: Dry Cabin Air
Your skin’s first beef with flying is the dry cabin air.
The cabin pressure and humidity levels on airplanes are pretty different than what we are used to. Typically, skin is comfortable when the humidity is between 40 to 70 percent. However, most airplane cabins are at about 20 percent – and that’s less than half of what we are used to.
So along with that lack of humidity, comes a dip in the hydration level of your skin on a plane. In other words, the pressurised environment of a plane is totally unnatural and completely sucks the moisture out of your skin, leaving you dehydrated with cracked lips and dry, flaky skin.

Woe #2: UV Damage
Beyond that, flying at high altitudes also puts you closer to the sun so the ultraviolet (UV) damage is at its greatest. Since airplane windows do not have the protective ability to filter out these harmful rays, it makes you all the more susceptible to cosmic radiation every time you fly.

Sun exposure is actually one of the key reasons for the skin to lose its elasticity. The sun’s powerful rays damage skin cells, which over time, can accelerate the effects of ageing. Ultimately, it breaks down your collagen and elastin fibres; and without these supporting connective tissue, your skin loses strength and flexibility. Skin then begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely.
So if UV rays = ageing skin and wrinkles, then that makes UV light an absolute enemy in the quest for younger-looking skin. This also debunks the common misconception that Woe #3: Cabin Altitude
The barometric pressure during a typical plane ride is equivalent to what we would feel while standing atop an 8,000-foot mountain. Apparently, the higher the altitude, the less blood flows to the skin, which causes the Also, as our blood absorbs less oxygen at such high altitudes, it contributes to feelings of fatigue such as dizziness, sleepiness, and a general lack of mental sharpness.
So yes, if you ever feel sleepy in-flight, it’s certainly no thanks to the cushioned airplane seats.
Woe #4: Water Retention
Inactivity as well as too much salt intake (thanks, airport snacks) during a long flight leads to water retention, which causes facial puffiness.

To help prevent your face from bloating, you can get up from your seat to walk down the aisle once an hour.
Or if you are trapped in a window seat, with sleeping passengers on either side, you can simply stretch and lift your legs up and down, rotating them in circles periodically. These can help to mobilise the excess fluid.
Woe #5: Jet Lag And Lack Of Sleep
Medically referred to as ‘desynchronosis’, jet lag is part and parcel of long haul flights. When you are constantly flying to and fro, you are often straddling between time zones and this can cause your circadian rhythm to get interrupted, triggering a severe lack of sleep.
Whether you’re actually travelling through time zones or just skimping on sleep during your trip, it can have a huge impact on your skin.

Last week, I popped by the branch in Orchid Country Club to give its slimming treatment and facials a go and this was what went down.
Slimming Treatment
The slimming treatment I tried was the Slim Lipo-Laser Treatment ($230 excl. GST) and the staff there guaranteed—as they do with all their first time customers—that I would lose 5cm around my waist. A little bit skeptical at first, I went for it and wound up losing a total of 8.5cm within the 60 minute session! I was definitely surprised by the results.

The treatment uses a machine called a ‘Lipo Laser’. During the treatment, after the skin is prepped with a Complex AHA fruit acid, a total of 8 laser light emitting plates are strapped across the tummy region. It sounds scary, but trust me, it isn’t!
The lasers penetrate the skin, targeting fat cells and releasing water and free fatty acid. This effectively causes the fat cells to “shrink”, which is how you lose the inches around your tummy! After this, the slimming therapist conducts a Manual Lymph Drainage massage to flush out all that water and nasty toxins that was released earlier.
The heat from the metal plates can be a little painful, especially if you’re on or near the beginning/end of your period (like I was), because the skin tends to be more sensitive during this time. Don’t try to bear with it like I did! Feel free to let the attentive staff know if it’s too hot, and she will make adjustments accordingly.

As the lasers were working away at “melting” my fats, the therapist went through a questionnaire to find out more about my lifestyle habits—how much water I drink, how often I exercise, etc.—as well as my weight loss goals—what my goal weight is, when was the last time I was at my goal weight, etc.
When the session was over, we had a short consultation where she advised me on how to lead a healthier lifestyle, and made sure I had realistic expectations when it came to achieving and maintaining my goal body, i.e. it takes a total lifestyle change. Slimming treatments without any accompanying changes to your nutritional habits or exercise frequency won’t do the trick, especially not in the long run.
While the Lipo-Laser Treatment is definitely a quick fix when you need it, I think it’s great that Healing Touch employs a holistic approach toward weight loss, providing nutritional coaching and motivating customers to live healthier beyond just administering the treatment, so they can better achieve their goal physiques.
Facial
For the facial, I tried the NEO Energy Advanced Facials ($226 excl. GST), a 90 minute bespoke facial where you get to use 2 of 5 cutting edge technologies, depending on your skin issues.

The 5 are Meso Infusion, which facilitates the penetration of serum for more hydrated, firmer skin; D-Sonic Deep Cleansing for a deep clean of the skin; Sonic Muscle Toning for firming and lifting; LED Multi-Purpose, to promote the production of collagen; as well as Bio-Mask Refining, to minimize pores as well as to brighten.
Because the beautician identified uneven skin tone, blackheads and enlarged pores as my key skin issues, she recommended Meso Infusion and Bio-Mask Refining. The treatment was so relaxing I actually fell asleep!

After giving my face a thorough double cleanse, as well as a routine extraction, the beautician applied a customized serum to my face and gently massaged it in using the Neo Energy Mesotherapy probe which was tuned to the optimal frequency for penetration (Meso Infusion).
Next, she applied 6 pairs of electrodes to the face through a face mask. While the positive ion plates helped with detoxification and removal of dirt and oil, the negative ion plates helped with the delivery of the active ingredients of the serum used, as well as with brightening the face and the minimizing of pores (Bio-Mask Refining).
What struck me as quite unique about the facials here was that they pluck your eyebrows as part of the treatment. I was so surprised I actually asked “Is this part of the facial?” when the beautician offered to pluck them! Aside from that, the facial included a face and shoulder massage—again, an unexpected touch, but definitely a plus by me.
All the products used were lightly and beautifully scented and felt super luxurious, and as promised, at the end of the treatment, my pores were noticeably smaller and my skin felt soft and youthful again!
From my experience, it’s clear to see that the staff at Healing Touch are truly dedicated to serving its customers. - Put a banana into a blender and grind to a smooth, lump-free puree.
- Add a tablespoon of olive oil into the pureed banana. Give it another whirl in the blender. You should get a frothy mixture!
- Apply the banana-olive oil mixture on every strand and your scalp. Let the hair mask sit for 10 – 15 minutes
- Rinse off mixture
DSG Tip: If you have dry hair but an oily scalp, it’s best to use this hair mask on your hair only and not your scalp!

Tips for Dealing With Dry/Damaged Hair:
1. Conditioner Is Your Best Friend
After shampooing it’s essential to condition! Conditioner locks in the moisture and oils in your hair and if you’re always on the go, pick up a bottle of leave-in conditioner!
2. Keep Usage Of Heat Styling Tools To A Minimum
Styling tools like hair straighteners and curlers can really dry out your hair. If you’re dolling up for a special occasion remember to use a heat protectant spray!
3. Amp Up Your Post Wash Hair Care
Use a nourishing hair mask once a week, if you’re keen on walking out of the house with smooth and shiny hair opt for some hair oil. Not only does it keep your hair silky smooth, it also keeps away fizz and flyaways!
For Oily Hair
1. Lemon Juice

- Add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a cup of water and mix well
- Rinse your hair with the mixture and let your hair sit for a few minutes
- Repeat this process at least three times a week to get hair that is shiny but not oily!
DSG Tip: Always use small amounts of vinegar or diluted apple cider vinegar, too much vinegar may actually be hazardous to your body!
3. Tea

- When the tea cools a little (the tea should be warm), apply it to your scalp.
- Let the tea sit for five minutes.

The first step to combating oily hair is the shampoo you use. Certain shampoos might strip your hair of its natural oils and make your scalp produce even more sebum.
3. Limit Your Hair Brushing And Touching Your Hair
Excessive brushing actually stimulates the production of oil which isn’t the desired affect for someone who has oily hair! And that unconscious habit of touching your hair? It could actually be stimulating your scalp as well!

Nestled in acclaimed nail salon, esBoudoir, in Vivo City, customers can watch their perfect nail colour being mixed by hand.
Despite being tailor-made to cater to your wildest whims, a 5-ml bottle of your desired colour only costs $11, while a 10-ml bottle goes for $16.
From 17 October 2016 to 31 December 2016, feel free to bring in discontinued lacquer and a picture or an item of colour you wish to bottle. Within 10 minutes, Lacquer Bar will have that colour blended and packaged like a genie in a bottle.
If you have no colour in mind, the colourist will most gladly assist you.
Our Experience at the Lacquer Bar
We popped by, and were blown away by the warmth of the colourist in session and the staffs’ level of professionalism.
For the first time in our lives, we felt as though we were peeking behind a magician’s curtain.
Except, instead of pulling rabbits out of hats, we were creating concoctions that went onto our nails.

At the lacquer bar, we had an impromptu flash of inspiration from a pair of beloved faded denim shorts.
During our one-on-one consultation with the colourist, we asked for the nail polish colour to resemble “old jeans”, an all-time comfort wear close to our hearts.
We pointed at a sky blue pamphlet close by for reference, and requested for the colourist to “add a bit of grey into that blue”.
The Science of Beauty
Now, here’s where some technical jargon comes in.
The colourist used a device, called a spectrometer, to analyse the colour of the pamphlet and pick out the exact shade of blue on it. After that, the spectrometer used an in-house algorithm to convert the digital colour to a formula. How cool is that?
From there, the colourist used chemistry laboratory equipment to blend the colours by hand.
After the colours were blended, we were given small samples to test on our nails, under white and warm lights respectively.
We thought that this was especially thoughtful of them!
This countered one of our greatest worries as discerning nail polish buyers.
Our major pet peeve when buying a nail polish, is when it turns out looking like a new colour under a different lighting from the one we tried it under. Say, when it looks like a lovely violet indoors but ends up like a Barney purple outdoors.
Once the colourist had finished making adjustments to the hue, he bottled up the lovely shade for us.
FYI, never be afraid of commenting on the colour, because the Lacquer Bar accurately tailors your polish according to all the information you tell the colourist.
We even got to name our newly-created colour! We called it “Ripped Jeans” because we’ll always be rebels at heart.

Modus Operandi
Lacquer Bar keeps a record of every colour made by any customer, so you can always go back to purchase a colour you previously created.
To shake things up, the Lacquer Bar comes up with new colours every month. This November, their signature colour is a sumptuous dark plum, heralding the start of the winter season.
According to the colourist, Tiffany Blue and nude hues are the most popular nail polish shades created at the Lacquer Bar. Just so you know, this is where you can lay your hands (and nails) on them!
What is in the Works
Though crème is the only finish available at the moment, other finishes such as shimmer and glitter will be unleashed very soon.
Currently, the Lacquer Bar has an internal catalogue and a database of every colour they’ve ever made. Yes, yours and ours too.
We’re over the moon to know that they’re working on a catalogue for customers to choose colours and derive inspiration from.
Last but not least, Lacquer Bar’s upcoming Collaboration Collection will see them cooperating with local businesses and iconic personalities, so stay tuned!
