Why This New Cafe At Upp Thomson Is A Must Visit. Look At Their Waffles!

Nothing makes me happier than a delectable plate of waffle topped with sauce; sprinkled with almonds, chopped fruits, two scoops of ice cream; and completed with a macaron. Fortunately for me, I had two plates of that goodness. Twice in a week. Guilty as charged.

If you’d like to enjoy a treat, a chill place to unwind after a tiresome day, or some great waffles, head over to Les Patisseries at Upper Thomson. They moved from Toa Payoh and opened Nov 2015. We couldn’t resist paying a visit after we heard about their waffles.

We had their Horffles Waffle (two scoops of vanilla ice cream on a waffle with Horlicks), and Ispahan Waffle (two scoops of raspberry sorbet on a rose waffle). Both waffles came with a macaron, mixed berries, almonds, and sauce. The texture of both waffles on two different occasions was fluffy and crispy. Portions are quite big, so do share!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEi6zYvH_2O/

There are plenty of other waffle choices from Thai Milk Tea to Belgian Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Earl Grey, and Madagascar Vanilla. If you’re feeling crafty, you can create your own waffles according to your preference. Just pick your waffle base, how many slices you want, ice cream flavour and sauce. This DIY option will surely save you from all the stress of picking ONE waffle flavour.

Note: Waiting time for the waffles to be done was quite long, considering that Les Patisseries was relatively quiet when we were there.

At a price tag of around $14+, Les Patisseries’ waffles are more a treat than a regular dessert stop. Crafted with thought and care, they’re still definitely worth a try. So grab your friends and best buddies, and get ready to enjoy waffles that taste just as good as they look!

The Heat Is On! Are You Game For Some Competitive Eating?

You’ve probably seen Takeru Kobayashi shovel down hot dogs after hot dogs, or heard about L.A Beast a.k.a skippy62able who posts videos of his eating challenges on YouTube. But do you know that the competitive eating scene in Singapore is also very…competitive?

[caption id="attachment_6776" align="alignnone" width="960"]Image source: Food League Singapore Image source: Food League Singapore[/caption]

Earlier this year in January, competitive eater Zermatt Neo made headlines by chucking down a whopping 4kg of chicken rice under 30 minutes! (If you have no idea how much 4kg of chicken rice is, that’s basically 10 people‘s lunch) Then in February, he took on another challenge and wolfed down a 21-inch pizza in 10 minutes and 30 seconds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6rOJxLR1Sc

It’s a chicken rice party in him tummy

If your face isn’t contorted in shock, Zermatt also boasts (in different occasions) The Beast Burger Challenge, 123 sticks of Lok Lok in 30 minutes, 150 sticks of satay, 100 gyozas, 100 chicken wings and….

JCube’s So Spicy Challenge

Not everyone has a huge tummy capacity but one thing for sure is that we Singaporeans sure love spicy food. If you’re one of those who is always going “more chilli, add sambal, extra spicy…”, how about putting your tongue’s spicy-o-meter to the test with JCube’s #SoSpicyChallenge?

[caption id="attachment_6771" align="alignnone" width="960"]Image source: So Spicy Challenge Image source: So Spicy Challenge[/caption]

With the Qualifying Round taking place on the 14th, 15th and 21st of May, and the Grand Finale on the 22nd of May, this year’s edition of the #SoSpicyChallenge will definitely turn the heat on. How hot? It’s gonna be like winner gets to fly to Japan kind of hot.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="480"] Image source: JCube. They will contact you with participation details. You can also head down to JCube’s Customer Service Counter at B1 at the mall to get your copy of J.Mag, which is loaded with information about the challenge.

spaisyyy

Alternatively, you can earn your way for a direct entry to the quarter finals of the #SoSpicyChallenge by taking the spicy trail and collecting your ‘battle scars’. This challenge has already begun and all you have to do is challenge the dishes at the participating outlets (as above) and collect your stamps at B1 Customer Service Counter with your receipt. Once you’ve collected 120 points with at least 1 stamp from each spicy level, you’ve literally eaten your way to the quarter finals.

Think you have what it takes for the #SoSpicyChallenge? We highly recommend you to sign up with a group of friends and settle the “I have a higher spicy tolerance level than you” feud once and for all.

Enjoy Oysters From All Over The World! You’ll Have A Shell Of A Time.

Oyster lovers, listen up! The World Oyster Festival by Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro is back for another year!

[caption id="attachment_6600" align="alignnone" width="960"]Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro[/caption]

Set to take place on the 1st of July 2016, this will be the fourth edition of the bistro’s very own festival. Like every other year, the festival boasts a good 20 varieties of oysters flown in from around the world for this special festival. Did we also mention that these juicy succulent oysters are fresh? They’re not frozen.

[caption id="attachment_6601" align="alignnone" width="960"]oysters2 Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro[/caption]

It is safe to say that July is the best time for us to enjoy oysters. Cold water is where you can harvest great shellfishes and around that time of the year, the waters in the northern hemisphere is still chilly and the southern hemisphere has already entered winter. That is literally the best of both worlds.

[caption id="attachment_6602" align="alignnone" width="960"]oysters 3 Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro [/caption]

The World Oyster Festival is not only about eating fresh oysters but also a crash course in #oysters101. Like fine wine, the flavours of oysters differ according to region. Some can be a little more salty than others, while others are creamier, richer, metallic or even fruity like the Kumamoto Oysters (our personal favourite) that are famed for a honey dew finish.

[caption id="attachment_6603" align="alignnone" width="960"]Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro[/caption]

Greenwood has yet to announce the price for this festival. Looking at past festivals, this is going to be a shell of a time. So mark it down on your calendar, share the news with your friends (don’t be shellfish) and follow us for more updates!

Bounce Singapore

Originating from Melbourne in 2012, Bounce Inc is an international sensation that has redefined gravity across the globe. Their park locations include South Africa, Hong Kong, Thailand, Europe, Abu Dhabi, and more.

This epic urban playground consists of interconnected trampolines, Freerun Terrain Park (like the one on Ninja Warrior Mount Midoriyama), and “Leap of Faith” – jump on a raised platform and leap out to catch hold of the trapeze. There are all in all, 3 areas in the park. The areas are based on interests and levels of difficulty. There’s something for everyone – adults, fitness enthusiasts, youths, and kids.

Not to worry, the park is safe as all hard surfaces are replaced with circus-grade padding, giant air bags, and springs.

Bounce Singapore will be opening their doors this June. In anticipation of the grand opening, they are hosting a recruitment unlike any other. Aside from being able to demonstrate your skills and charisma, auditionees will be given the exclusive opportunity to enter and have fun at the adventure park before its official opening.

If you fit the bill, do head down to *SCAPE for the audition!

Japan’s BAKE CHEESE TART Opens This Week – All You Need To Know!

The wait is almost over. Japan’s famous BAKE CHEESE TART will finally be serving freshly baked cheese tarts in ION Orchard starting from 29 April 2016 (Friday)!

Screen Shot 2016-04-21 at 8.23.09 PM

Hailing from the land of the best and yummiest dairy products – Hokkaido, BAKE’s signature cheese tart is created by blending three different types of cream cheese together – two from Hokkaido, and one more from France. The three cheeses go so well together that they form a flavour that is unique to BAKE.

But what makes these cheese tarts so delicious (#queuedfortwohours type of delicious) is the two-step baking method which gives it a distinct crunchy yet fluffy texture. The process starts in Hokkaido. Cheese mousse is piped into freshly baked tart crusts. They are then flown to Singapore and freshly baked in the store to complete the process of creating perfect, delectable cheese tarts.

Since the inception of their first store in Hokkaido back in July 2011, BAKE has sold over 20 million tarts in Japan and its overseas stores including Hong Kong, Seoul, and Bangkok. The Singapore store will be their fifth store outside Japan, and their flagship store for Southeast Asia. They are counting on Singaporeans and the power of social media to spread the word to the rest of the world.

BAKE Cheese Tart’s freshly baked cheese tart will be available at ION Orchard starting 29 April 2016.

Each cheese tart will sell for $3.50, and a box of six is priced at $19.50.
