Get Going! Try Something New This Weekend With These 6 Activities
Weekends ARE supposed to be fun, entertaining or at least relaxing. If you’re shrugging your shoulders and sighing whenever someone asks ‘what are you doing this weekend?’, you’ve lapsed into the lazy, predictable routine weekend.
But don’t worry, we’ve lined up six new attractions in Singapore for you to end your week with a bang. Don’t blame us if Monday comes too soon!
1. Urban Ski
Yes, we understand its really hot lately so here is something cool for you… like skiing and snowboarding kind of cool.
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BAmRmtFrVys/?taken-at=870524317[/embed]Nope, you don’t need to take a cable car, and no you don’t need to put on your heat tech winter jacket. Basically, Urban Ski is Singapore’s one and only indoor ski and snowboarding centre. There’s an indoor rotating ski slope that caters to both beginners as well as seasoned skiers and snowboarders.
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/-1SKGSszWD/?taken-at=870524317[/embed]This rotating ski slope (more like a treadmill for skiers) allows you to ski downslope continuously for hours up to 60km/hr. All you have to do is to try to remain standing at the same spot (a mean feat!).
A group session (2-4 pax) costs $310 on weekdays and $360 on weekends. Individual classes cost $230 on weekdays and $270 on weekends. All classes are an hour long.

3. Bombay Howrah Dining Car
We’ve heard of supper clubs but how many of us have actually tried one that is run by a Master Chef Asia finalist?
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BD0iiZQKqqG/?taken-by=bombayhowrahdiningcar[/embed]Founded by Priya of Master Chef Asia (famed for her Stuffed Paratha with Dhal and Tomato Chutney), Bombay Howrah Dining Car offers a modern take on traditional flavours from lesser known regional cuisines (West and East India), over a six course meal.
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BCpmD9CqqhB/?taken-by=bombayhowrahdiningcar[/embed]Among them, some dishes you will get to taste include Sabudana Vada (savoury sago patties), Kolhapuri Mutton Chops (a spicy meat preparation from interior Maharashtra), Prawn Malai Curry (a fragrant and creamy prawn preparation from West Bengal), Bhapa Doi (steamed yoghurt pudding) and Masala Chai Panna Cotta.
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BAHG5aoKqmQ/?taken-by=bombayhowrahdiningcar[/embed]Foodies who love Indian food, this is definitely the car that you don’t wanna miss.

4. Sentosa Broadwalk Bazaar
Too much clutter at home? How about setting up a stall at the Sentosa Broadwalk Bazaar?
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/tcouxJE4ez/?taken-at=276611174[/embed]Perfectly smacked between Vivocity, Harbourfront Centre, the Cruise Centre, and Resorts World Sentosa, the Sentosa Boardwalk is a popular spot among locals, visiting touristsas well as expatriates alike.
Whether you’re selling off some pre-loved clothes, baking goods or trying your hands on being an entrepreneur, this is the place to test your ideas and product. And the best part? Booth prices start from as low as $35!
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/3T16xOomAQ/?taken-at=276611174[/embed]If setting up a stall is not your thing, come and support local makers and brands, and maybe discover a hidden gem.

5. Smith Marine Kelong
Hong Kong-ers have their Jumbo Kingdom floating restaurant. We at Singapore have our very own floating Kelong seafood restaurant.
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BCSIEFsHOTV/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed]If you want to fish for your own dinner or enjoy the freshest seafood in Singapore, Smith Marine Kelong is a great catch. Located off Pulau Ubin and Changi, this restaurant has a ‘sure catch’ fishing pond where you can give fishing a go. It costs $35 per fish if you’d like the restaurant chef to cook it for you or alternatively, you can take your fish home at $15 per fish.
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/-WKyclIhcG/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed]To get there, you will need to take a 10-minute ride on a bumboat from Changi Point Terminal. It usually costs $100 for a boatload of 12 pax (round trip) but it costs the same even if you go in a smaller group (payment to be made directly to the boatman). Plan your trip wisely and save that extra money for yummy seafood instead.
Smith Marine Kelong
Address: Off Changi and Pulau Ubin (GPS Coordinates: 01’23’52″N – 103’57’42″E)
Contact number: +65 9792 7609
Operating Hours: Daily, 10am – 7pm

6. Coney Island
No, we’re not referring to the Coney Island at New York. We’re talking about the island that was once owned by the Haw Par brothers of Tiger Balm.
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BBkD5bEoMcB/?tagged=pulauserangoon[/embed]Formerly known as Serangoon Island, this tranquil island has had relatively few visitors despite it’s easy accesibility (you can cycle or even walk there). It’s only about a hundred metres away from Singapore at its closest point.
To get there, just head over to Punggol Point Park (end of Punggol Road) and look for the bridge that connects the mainland to the West Entrance of the Island.
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BAWbx8sGC3S/?tagged=pulauserangoon[/embed]What we love about Coney is this place feels like a world away from urbanity. Take a stroll at the mangrove broadwalk and trust us, you will feel so refreshed it’s as if you’ve just decluttered your mind.
The sound of the waves is so mesmerising that no one would believe Singapore is just a 500m walk away!
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/-VJZRxr9BG/?tagged=pulauserangoon[/embed]Rumour has it that there’s a lonely cow at Coney Island. We have no tips about how you could find that cow but if you’re planning a trip to Coney Island, do check this, and this out for a better understanding of the island.
Coney Island
Entry fee: Free entry
Opening hours: Daily, 7am – 7pm
With 6 cool attractions to spice up your weekend, which one will you go for? I think I’ll try my fishing luck at Smith Marine. If anyone wants to share a boat, drop a comment!

Japanese Carnival This Weekend – Food, Games, And More!
If you love Japanese culture like we do, mark your calendar! Super Japan Matsuri will be held from 20 to 22 May 2016 at the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay from 5pm to 10pm daily.
Food
Like every other Matsuri (festival), you can look forward to a weekend of traditional Japanese festival food such as Takoyaki (octopus balls), Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes), soft serve ice cream, and of course, Japanese beer.

Those who want to try your hand at Japanese games, you might want to start practising your Yo-yo tsuri (water balloon fishing), Senbonbiki (lucky strings game), Katanuki (candy moulding), Shateki (shoot prizes down), and many more.

The game player will pull on a string, not knowing which treat is attached to it. Apparently, this is usually a ‘sure-win’ game.
Dress up
On top of that, if you dress to match their nightly theme (see image below), you’ll receive one free game coupon to be used at the festival.
[caption id="attachment_5794" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Super Japan Matsuri[/caption]This sure sounds like a great opportunity to dress up, cosplay, or put on a yukata (summer kimono)!

The Ultimate KL Guide Part 1 – How To Get There & Where To Stay
Need an escape from work or planning a shopping trip to Kuala Lumpur (KL) but not too sure where to start from? Don’t worry cause our Ultimate KL Guide will help you manoeuvre around the capital city of Malaysia like a pro!
1. Getting there: Ways to travel to Kuala Lumpur
1. Plane & train
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/9dDZODsezF/?taken-by=renechong&hl=en[/embed]The most common (and my personal favourite) way to get to KL is by flight. The journey takes about an hour from Singapore and upon arrival (KLIA and KLIA 2), you can hop on the: Budget Taxi (buy a coupon from the counter), Metered Taxi (fare calculated by distance), and Premier Taxi (bigger vehicle, more expensive). Alternatively, you can also take the
2. Bus
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BDsuJQLGuG1/?tagged=aeroline&hl=en[/embed]Travelling by bus to KL from Singapore is the most cost effective and convenient way to travel. You don’t have to worry about the 100ml liquid restriction and some buses offer on-board meals and on-bus entertainment. Not to mention, there’s more legroom compared to a plane!
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BDxMhxtEDYc/?tagged=aeroline&hl=en[/embed]One popular choice among travellers is Aeroline, a no-stop bus journey that feels like you’re flying to KL. They are equipped with ‘cabin crews’ to attend to your needs. Their Aeroports (bus stops) are located at strategic locations which make it very easy and convenient for travellers. If you find Aeroline a little pricey ($50 for a one way ticket), you can consider other bus operators such as or by 4. Drive

Forget Salted Egg Croissant, Cheese Tart Coming Through!
Gone were the days where we had to go all the way to Osaka, Japan to try Pablo’s infamous yakitate cheese tart (baked cheese tarts). Now, we even have our own localised version with salted egg yolk! So ladies and gentlemen, let’s put salted egg croissants aside and start discovering cheese tarts!
1. Bake Cheese Tart
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BEFmiWDnrs2/?taken-at=1024098622[/embed]Originally from Hokkaido, Bake may be the latest tart store in Singapore and they sure know how to bake up a storm. Their signature baked cheese tart is made from two Hokkaido and one French cream cheese variety. The cream cheese, baked to a glorious golden, sits in crispy pastry. This cheese tart has gotten Hong Kong-ers waiting for over two hours just to get a bite of it.
[caption id="attachment_5605" align="aligncenter" width="1139"] Credit: Bake Cheese Tart[/caption]Apparently, it is Bake’s special double-bake method that makes the tart particularly yummy. The process starts in Japan. First, the crust of the tart is baked, and the cheese is poured into it. Then in Singapore, the tart will be baked for a second time at 200 celsius. If the tart is not baked long enough, it won’t be crunchy. And if the cheese is overbaked, it won’t be in a molten state. It’s all about the skills! Bake Cheese Tart will begin operations at the end of April at ION Orchard.

Address: 2 Orchard Turn, #B4-33 ION Orchard
2. Prima Deli
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BEAnBMZx0KJ/?tagged=primadeli[/embed]For those who enjoyed the salted egg yolk croissant, here is something that will hit you like a crescendo. Local baker Prima Deli has recently launched not one but two types of cheese tarts – Original Lava Cheese Tart and Salted Egg Lava Cheese Tart, at a very reasonable price. It is so popular that their cheese tarts have sold out in an hour.
[caption id="attachment_5610" align="aligncenter" width="1050"] Credit: here for the outlets3. The Icing Room
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BEGOTsXmpQc/?tagged=theicingroom[/embed]Also on the cheese tart bandwagon is The Icing Room with their very cheesy, soft like tofu Original, Tiramisu (not available yet) and Golden Lava (salted egg) Cheese Tarts. What we love about these tarts is the consistency of the texture, so velvety and smooth in your mouth, and the cheesiness is not too over the top.
[caption id="attachment_5609" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Credit: The Icing Room[/caption]If you think one is never enough, they’re currently having a buy 3 get 1 free promotion with each tart priced at $2 (limited quantities available). The cheese tarts are currently available at The Icing Room Nex@Serangoon outlet and will soon be making a debut at BreadTalk. They will also be dishing out their Tiramisu flavoured cheese tarts in the near future.

4. Flor Pâtisserie
You know you can always count on Japanese bakeries for drool worthy and ‘so pretty I don’t have the heart to eat’ desserts. To get your artisanal ice cheese tart fix, we highly recommend FLOR Pâtisserie, a Japanese-styled patisserie serving authentic Japanese-inspired French pastry.
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BD-mMR1u4a5/?taken-at=123974080&hl=en[/embed]You might want to bring some friends along because their cheese tarts are available in 8 different flavours- Original, Earl Grey, Green Tea, Caramel, Chocolate, Orange and Maple (more friends, more chance to try different flavours). And the best part? FLOR’s cheese tarts are almond cookie based, giving extra flavour.

Don’t look down! 6 Sky-High Places In Singapore With Incredible Views
We often complain that there’s nothing much do in the city. Weekends can get a little routined (shopping, eating, shopping). Well, if you look for the right things at the right places, you might find something a little different. When you’re tired of the same old view, it’s time to look upwards (not down!) and check out these 6 spectacular sky-high places in Singapore!
1. Fort Siloso Skywalk, Sentosa
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BB7K8d7g-eS/?taken-at=776069788[/embed]If you think Sentosa is all about the beaches, this 11-storey high scenic aerial walkway will prove you wrong. Known as the tallest skywalk tower in Singapore, its distinctive S-shaped design is created to minimise heat and vibration. With a length of 181-metres long, the aerial walking trail allows visitors to enjoy a different view on each side: treetops, the sea, and also the rooftop of Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa!
Both Fort Siloso and the skywalk are free admission for all and there are guided tours for those who are interested to know more on the history of Fort Siloso. Free entry, good ventilation and only a 5-minute walk away from Fort Siloso, this is a great place for family adventures, friendly hangouts and dates too!

Just head to The light and sound show (free entry) which plays twice daily at 7.45pm and 8.45pm. Admire the gardens as the large canopies come alive at night, accompanied by music and sparkling lights. Entry fee of $5 for adults and $3 for kids to the skywalk seem reasonable for an exceptional experience of a lifetime.

So we’ve had the ! Rather than do what we always do best – complain, we can also take this opportunity to chill at a beach. When it comes to beaches, we often think about the white sandy beaches of Maldives, surfing in Sri Lanka, island hopping in Phuket, sun-kissed at Bali…. The truth is these trips require a lot of planning. From air tickets to local logistics, accommodation to leave application (there goes the precious annual leave you’ve been saving for special occasions), they can be quite a headache. While Singapore might be a small country comprising of edgy and contemporary architecture, there are pretty awesome beaches that cater to different preferences and occasions too! Here are 5 best beaches in Singapore to check out this weekend for a hassle-free beachcation! St. John’s Island and Lazarus Island might just be Singapore’s best well-kept beach gems. To get to these islands, visitors will have to purchase ferry tickets on the spot at Marina South Pier as pre-bookings and reservation services are not allowed. If you want a ticket, be sure to be early! These southern islands are separated at the jetty itself; turning left would lead you to the unobtrusive Lazarus Island and turning right would be to St. John’s Island. Do pack your own food and drinks as the islands are committed to preserving their natural state, thus there are no restaurants and proper eateries. In case you forget, it’s okay! There’s a provision store and small eatery at the Marina South Pier. Do make your purchases there before you get on the jetty! Our verdict: These islands are less mainstream and definitely suitable for those who love places that are off the beaten track. Packing your own food may be a little troublesome but the view there is worth every effort. Sentosa is famous for its 3 beaches – Siloso, Palawan, and Tanjong. Known to be one of the most popular must-visit beaches in Singapore, Siloso beach is an impressive man-made beach has got everything a sun-basking lover needs. From bistros, restaurants, a man-made whirl wave for surfing to even a whirlpool, this is definitely where fun-loving people hang out. If you think beaches are quiet after the sun has set, you may need to think again. Siloso comes alive with parties and music after dark. Now, can you already imagine yourself sipping on a cocktail watching the sunset and then partying all night long? Our verdict: Siloso literally spells fun under the sun (and stars). Best to go with a group of fun-loving friends. While you’re at it, check out the Bikini Bar, Singapore’s first and only Bintang Bar for a wide range of ice-cold beers, cocktails and house poured spirits. Palawan Beach is a family-friendly beach that boasts fun shops and eateries that are a favourite with adults and children alike. Parents can watch their kids have fun at the designated wading pools, water fountains and children’s seaside club while enjoying an iced drink at the bistros and bars nearby. Unlike its happening neighbour, Siloso, Palawan is more laid back and relaxing, making it a great picnic spot. They also have a suspension bridge linking beach-goers to the southernmost point of Continental Asia (Asia’s closest point to the Equator). Our verdict: Palawan beach may not be as upbeat as Siloso but it is also vibrant and energetic, making it a great spot to throw a birthday party or picnic for both kids and adults. There is also a ‘If you like peace and serenity, Tanjong Beach is the place for you! It is a little more private and quiet than the other two beaches, and is a walking distance towards the hip Siloso Beach. Perhaps when you’re bored of sun tanning or reading that book, you can head over to explore Siloso Beach and Palawan – all within walking distance! Bring your significant other together with you for a night time stroll too. With twinkling stars and the help of more twinkling lights of the ships at the shore, it’s lovers’ paradise. Our verdict: Tanjong Beach is not only great for intimate and romantic dates, but also to catch up on your reading list or bring your girls and work the abs with someKLM) Also Read:
Remember how you used to ration your Fancl moisturiser after the brand’s closure in Singapore? After two good years, the Japanese skincare brand is back here and stronger than ever.
