Tsuta: Japan’s Super Famous & First Michelin-starred Ramen Stall Opens Next Month!
Foodies and ramen enthusiasts rejoice! The world’s first ever Michelin-starred ramen shop, Tsuta, opens in Singapore next month!
If you are on the hunt for world class cuisine that promises to challenge your palate without breaking the bank, this is it.
Where and When?
Tsuta Singapore will be located at 9 Scotts Road, Pacific Plaza.
The bad news? The restaurant will only open their doors sometime in October.
Unless you are already in Japan, at which we suggest you to head over ASAP, we can only look at pictures…
Meanwhile, here’s something you can salivate at.
[caption id="attachment_14962" align="aligncenter" width="2000"] credit: timeout[/caption]As much as we want a steaming hot bowl of Tsuta’s ramen to devour this instant, maybe the phrase ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’ can apply to our stomachs as well?
Tsuta in Japan
This is the first overseas venture for Tsuta. The original shop is located in Sugamo, a neighbourhood in Toshima, Tokyo.
In Japan, Tsuta is a 9-seater joint that serves roughly 150 bowls of ramen a day. In addition, it is one of the most affordable Michelin-Starred establishments you can visit.
[caption id="attachment_14963" align="aligncenter" width="800"] credit: insidejapantours[/caption]As a result, it is not surprising for queues to start forming outside the small shop in Japan as early as 6 in the morning.
The catch? The shop only opens at 11am for business.
Tsuta Singapore
Tsuta Singapore will offer 3 different soup bases. They are the renowned shoyu soba, infused with their signature black truffle oil, shio soba, and miso.
[caption id="attachment_15057" align="aligncenter" width="800"] credit: Furthermore, the noodles used in Tsuta are said to be a blend of 4 different kinds of whole wheat flour. Say hello to consistently firm yet smooth noodles![caption id="attachment_15060" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] credit: In keeping with tradition, the Singapore branch will be a small 18-seater joint.
Most importantly, Chef Onishi himself will be supervising the kitchen to ensure similar standards to that of the original. Yum.
Why Singapore?
According to Chef Onishi, the restaurant was not short on offers since they snagged the award.
What made him choose the eventual partner from Singapore? It was simply the fact that unlike others, the Singaporean had made the effort to get in line and taste the food himself. Guess something good came out of Singaporeans love for queuing.
[caption id="attachment_15052" align="aligncenter" width="4096"] credit: i.ytimg.com[/caption]
Lucky us.
In Japan, Tsuta usually opens from 11am to 4pm. Unless the ingredients run out before that. However, there is still no word on how the Singapore stall will operate.
The ramen from Tsuta, described as THE best ramen in the world, is no small feat considering that Chef Onishi only opened the restaurant in 2012.
We really can’t wait!

6 DIE DIE Must Visit Stalls For Lovers Of Seafood White Bee Hoon!
The seafood white bee hoon buzz is one of the latest food craze in our sunny island.
This unassuming tze-char dish has been around for ages in Singapore, with no one paying so much attention to it until now.
With so many wannabes in the market riding on the wave of the craze, it’s rare to come by stalls that genuinely know their stuff.
Here are some of the places we recommend for a good plate of our favourite local seafood white bee hoon!
1. Woon Woon Pek Beehoon
This small hawker stall at Changi Village Hawker Centre brings in long lines of customers every week.
[caption id="attachment_14515" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Credit: cptslow yeo[/caption]Their speciality is the seafood that goes with its bee hoon. Choose from a top-up of fish, crab, prawn, crayfish or mussels. If you’re feeling hungry (or are in a group), you can try the seafood platter ($30 or $40).
Woon Woon Pek Bee Hoon
Address: Blk 2, Changi Village Road #01-52, Singapore 500002
2. East Seafood White Beehoon
Led by a chef with 30 years of culinary experience, East Seafood hawker chain prides itself on offering affordable seafood white bee hoon amidst rising seafood prices.
Image: facebook.com/eastseafood
With three hawker branches located in Toa Payoh, Hougang (Ciyuan CC) and Ang Mo Kio, they also offer great seafood add-ons with their bee hoon (crayfish, lala and crabs).
East Seafood White Bee Hoon
Address:
Blk 210 Toa Payoh Lorong 8, #01-06, Singapore 310210
Blk 407 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 #01-733, Singapore 560407
No.51 Hougang Ave Ci Yuan Hawker Centre, Singapore 538776
3. Jia Wei White Beehoon
Quietly tucked away in an HDB coffee shop in Jalan Bukit Merah (near ABC Brickworks hawker centre), Jia Wei brings a homey taste to its tze char specials.
[caption id="attachment_14517" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Credit: Apart from seafood white bee hoon, they also serve up popular dishes such as Har Cheong fried chicken and black pepper crab.Jia Wei White Bee Hoon
Address: Block 2 Jalan Bukit Merah, Singapore 150002
4. White Restaurant The Original White Beehoon
When it comes to seafood white bee hoon, this famous restaurant chain in the north is the mother of them all.
Image: uncletehpeng.com
White Restaurant The Original White Beehoon is one of the pioneers of the famous Sembawang White Bee Hoon. Their version is dressed in thick sauce and copious ingredients (eggs, sotong, chai sim, and prawns – yum!). Beware of the long queues on the weekends!
White Restaurant The Original White Beehoon
Address: 22 Jalan Tampang (Opp Sembawang Shopping Centre) Singapore 758966
5. Hualong Fishhead Steamboat
Though not seafood white bee hoon specialists, Hualong manages to differentiate its rendition of the dish by making it drier than usual.
[caption id="attachment_14364" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image: facebook.com/hualongfishheadsteamboat[/caption]The seafood white bee hoon is served on an opeh leave, and topped with sliced cabbage, fried garlic and lime for flavour.
Complete your meal with one of their delicious dishes, such as fish maw soup, fried sotong and fuyong omelette.
Hua Long Fishhead Steamboat
Address: Block 347, #01-2142 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3, Singapore 560347
6. Hong Yun Seafood
One of the more successful coffee shop stalls in Toa Payoh, Hong Yun is known for the crispy – and huge – pork lard that they generously scatter across several of their dishes. Same goes for their seafood white bee hoon dish!
Image: uniquelious.blogspot.sg
While you’re there, try out their sambal kangkong and potato leaves – shiok!
Hong Yun Seafood
Address: Block 124, Toa Payoh Lor 1, #01-459 Singapore 310124
What is it about seafood white bee hoon that keeps drawing customers – new and old – week after week?
Could it the salty rice noodles that make up the core of the dish? Is it the prawns and sotong that accompanies it? Or could it be the fragrant, hot gravy that tops it all off?
It’s pointless to think too much into it – just join the queue this weekend and find out!

Wanna Share? 7 Steakhouses With Portions So Huge, You Need To Call Your Entire Squad!
Who can resist a good steak? Be it Wagyu or Angus, a seared chunk of peppered beef never fails to tickle our taste buds.
But not all of us are built to chow down 300g-portions effortlessly. For the light eaters, sharing a meal with friends is the perfect solution! Here are 7 steakhouses that offer some of the most generous sharing portions you can find in Singapore!
1. Morton’s The Steakhouse
Start off your steakhunt with one of the more atas spots: at Mandarin Oriental Hotel!
Swanky international restaurant Morton’s maintains its name by using the highest quality, US Department of Agriculture-designated ‘prime’ steak.
We recommend the Double Porterhouse Steak (1.3kg at $250++), which can serve around four to five pax! If you’re still craving for more, get a ribeye (460g at $102) to share between two to three peeps.
Morton’s The Steakhouse

Tel: 6339 3740
2. Badoque Café
Nothing beats a food joint with friendly service!
Not only does Badoque Café have warm and approachable service staff, but they also whip up a really good steak too.
Feast like royalty with their “King & Queen” promotion, which unites 1.2kg worth of ribeye with a 1.3kg king crab for $298. The set also comes with two starters (blue oyster and Greek salad), four soups and four drinks. This serves about five to six pax!

3. iSTEAKS Diner
This grill-specialist has gathered a sizable fan following since its conception as a humble hawker stall in Serangoon Gardens years ago.
Having evolved into a modern diner, the long queues at both its current branches at MyVillage (Serangoon) and Holland Village are no doubt due to the superb and affordable grilled meats that iSTEAKS whips up.
[caption id="attachment_14480" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Credit: iSTEAKS Diner[/caption]Share a 1.2kg Australian Wagyu D-Rump amongst four pax at $85 (includes four complementary sides), or a 600g Australian Porterhouse T-bone for $49. They make fantastic burgers too! Yummeh!

6. Bistecca Tuscan Steakhouse
Italian restaurants don’t just serve pasta and meatballs okay!
Bistecca Tuscan is one of the best fine-dining steakhouses in Singapore, using only organic-fed Australian F1 Wagyu for their steaks (with an impressive marbling score of 6+). Their Florentine-style cooking method produces steaks with juicy cores and charred crusts.
Image: facebook.com/BisteccaTuscanSteakhouse
Dig into a sumptuous 1.1kg Bistecca alla Fiorentina T-bone or Bistecca alla Costata ribeye ($188++ each) with one or two other friends. Don’t forget to take a wefie in the breezy al fresco area.

Image: facebook.com/restaurantcocotte
Order a Tasmanian grass-fed Prime rib Côte de Boeuf to share in a group ($18++ per 100g), or the Truffle Wagyu for one (250g at $69++).

Steaks come from different sources, in various cuts, and the taste varies based on individual cooking styles.
Depending on the number of people you are eating with (and how much you can eat) you should try out different types of steak, as they all have unique experiences to offer.
If the quantitiy is too much for you, it’s okay! You can always share with your friends! Bon appetite!

5. Epicurious Cafe
[caption id="attachment_14320" align="alignnone" width="900"] Image Credit: Daniel Food Diary[/caption]First it was rainbow cake making the Insta-rounds. Then earlier in the year, videos of rainbow-coloured cheeses stretching in various postures went viral, thanks to Kala Toast in Hong Kong. And now, our own Epicurious Cafe has also created the first Rainbow Cheese Toastie in Singapore.
The rainbow is made up of 5 different colours and flavours: Pink (beetroot), Orange (carrot), Green (Spinach), Blue (potato and garlic with butterfly pea) and Violet (eggplant and red cabbage).
Great to know that it’s made using natural ingredients and minimal colouring. At least we can eat this appealing cheese toastie at ease! Have fun stretching your rainbow for the best shots before you tuck in to the crispy and buttery toast!

The Pound is a small cafe specializing in premium Dutch Iced Coffees and homemade cakes. Unlike other Korean-owned cafes, they do not sell the Korean Bingsu.
What you will find here is roll cakes that look so delicately tasteful. Leave some stomach space after a satisfying kopitiam meal nearby for their Earl Grey Roll Cake. Light with a chiffon-like texture, the earl grey flavour was subtle and a perfect dessert for a complete meal.

Food For Thought – A Day In The Life Of A Singaporean Hawker
When a steaming plate of Chai Tow Kway is presented to us Singaporeans, we are probably consumed by the thought of gobbling it up. However, the scrumptious local dishes we enjoy and relish are the fruit of our Hawkers’ labour. Have you ever wondered what it’s like to take a walk in the shoes (or rather, rubber boots!) of our local hawkers?
A Tale of Two Hawkers
[caption id="attachment_13771" align="alignnone" width="745"] image credits: Tiger Beer[/caption]Mdm Wang Li Er and Ms Deniece Tan are amongst two of our country’s hawkers. While most of us still lie in bed sleeping, these two individuals are up to prepare for the bustling day ahead even before the sun rises!
[caption id="attachment_13772" align="alignnone" width="747"] image credits: Tiger Beer[/caption]Let’s go behind-the-scenes and uncover the various tasks, joys, and tales that pepper the days of a Singaporean Hawker.
Mdm Wang from Cambridge Rd Hong Kong Roast Pork
[caption id="attachment_13755" align="alignnone" width="1438"] image credit: Tiger Beer[/caption]Think of Mdm Wang as Chef Gustav from Ratatoullie – she’s a seasoned hawker and a veteran in the Hawker scene. Having run her stall, Cambridge Rd Hong Kong Roast Pork, for years, Mdm Wang is certainly familiar with the tough labour associated with the Hawker trade.
Tolerating the unbearable heat from standing next to the fire all day. Replenishing dishes as they run out. Washing the plates and bowls at the end of the day. Can you imagine doing this everyday
[caption id="attachment_13773" align="alignnone" width="744"] image credits: Tiger Beer[/caption]These are tasks that have become part and parcel of Mdm Wang’s life, yet she enduringly carries them out!
Going The Extra Mile
Mdm Wang doesn’t stop at her hawker duties. She also goes the extra mile to give back to the community.
[caption id="attachment_13774" align="alignnone" width="731"] image credits: Tiger Beer[/caption]She takes a little bit of time each day to print and distribute food coupons to the elderly, as some of them simply cannot afford meals. These coupons can then be exchanged for a free meal at her stall.
Talk about an unsung hero- Mdm Wang’s story certainly tugs at our heartstrings.
[caption id="attachment_13766" align="alignnone" width="1440"] image credits: Tiger Beer[/caption]Preparing and distributing these coupons on top of her regular job may be tough physically and financially, but Mdm Wang finds it very fulfilling. In her eyes, helping others brings her more happiness than money can buy!

Deniece Tan From Truly Test Kitchen
[caption id="attachment_13775" align="alignnone" width="753"] image credits: Tiger Beer [/caption]Deniece didn’t start off as an aspiring hawker. In fact, this 27-year-old was a regular working adult. Having graduated with a degree in business, Deniece landed a prestigious job in foreign exchanging banking. Ultimately, she knew her heart belonged somewhere else.
[caption id="attachment_13776" align="alignnone" width="735"] image credits: Tiger Beer[/caption]Deniece’s father, Mr Tan, had owned a hawker stall selling curry rice since she was little. Indeed, Deniece was brought up with good local home-cooked food. In a bold (and shocking!) move, she left a job with enviable career prospects and started Truly Test Kitchen to continue her father’s legacy.
It was a 360-degree change for her. However, Deniece has never regretted her decision. To her, the early mornings and hard work are but small sacrifices as she chases her dream!
[caption id="attachment_13777" align="alignnone" width="745"] image credits: Tiger Beer[/caption]“There’s just so much joy and satisfaction when you see that you have made so many people happy”, said the inspiring 27-year-old with a smile.
Show Your Love to Local Hawkers With a Message

Tiger Street Food Support Fund
[caption id="attachment_13765" align="alignnone" width="646"] image credit: ytimg[/caption]In a bid to keep this proud and roaring flame for local food alive, Tiger Singapore has set up a fund to encourage aspiring hawkers like Deniece to enter the trade. It can be hard to grapple with costs for an inexperienced hawker, so that’s where Tiger’s Street Food Support Fund comes in!
20 cents from each 6-can pack of beer purchased will be channelled to the Tiger Street Food Support Fund. Budding hawkers can apply for this fund from now till 15th November. Successful applicants will receive up to SGD $10,000 funding from Tiger Beer!
Go Nuts for Local Businesses!
[caption id="attachment_13768" align="alignnone" width="648"] image credits: Tiger Beer[/caption]Hawkers aren’t the only local businesses that propel our nation’s food culture: Local food brands do too!
Tiger has partnered with local nut brand, Camel, to launch the limited edition Nasi Lemak Sambal Flavoured Nuts! You know, the salty, crunchy and spicy ikan billis and peanuts that we know and love? Food For Thought
[caption id="attachment_13778" align="alignnone" width="735"] image credits: Tiger Beer[/caption]Being a hawker is no easy life. That is why our Hawker heritage needs preserving. A small gesture of appreciation from you and me, like thanking them and flashing a smile, could just be the encouragement they need to make their hard work and sacrifices worthwhile.
[caption id="attachment_13756" align="alignnone" width="1200"] image credit: Tiger Beer[/caption]The next time you receive your plate of hawker food, don’t forget to thank your hawker!

Include #uncagestreetfood, and your picture may be included in a Tiger Beer video! It’ll be a collective thank you to those who keep our great food and unique hawker culture alive.
