8 Unbeatable Bak Kut Teh In Singapore (Pepper & Herbal)!
Last month, while presenting the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award, Taiwanese host Hu Gua jokingly grumbled about his weight to South Korean actor Park Hae Jin. The culprit behind his increased pant size?
Your favourite delicacy, bak kut teh.
It turns out that even tourists are fans of the Chinese ‘meat bone tea’! If you’re a foreigner who can’t wait to visit our sunny shores to try out our local cuisines — or a Singaporean who wants to hop on a bak kut teh adventure — get a load of this:

What do you look for in a restaurant? If your answer is efficient service and great food, then you can’t miss Song Fa. With food that tastes like home, a typical bowl of pork rib soup can cost up to $9.
[caption id="attachment_6800" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: Song Fa Bak Kut Teh[/caption]Song Fa also recently opened a new outlet at The Centrepoint. Word is, it’s modelled after the street hawker scene of the 1960s.
In addition to their grade A main and side dishes, Song Fa also serves their very own specialty tea called the King’s Garden Tea, where it’s made from chrysanthemum flowers and oolong tea leaves.

2. Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh
[caption id="attachment_6450" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: cynshuie[/caption]Not only is the food excellent, but the service is top-notch too. If you’ve been to Ya Hua — especially the Havelock branch — you would know that the crew has an exceptional memory. But enough about that, what about the food?
[caption id="attachment_6451" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: mbrian87[/caption]It’s marvellous. The pork liver and kidney are done just right. The bak kut teh is authentic, tender, and leaves you wanting more.
Ya Hua’s delectable dishes are slightly more expensive (it costs about $7.50) than the rest of the stalls in this list, but given the ambience and service quality, many say that it’s worth it.

3. Eunos MRT Bak Koot Teh
[caption id="attachment_6454" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: Anba Anbalagan[/caption]Eunos MRT is one of the few bak kut teh stalls that will refill their customers’ soups without them asking for it. And that’s not all. The soup is fragrant, the pork ribs are of generous size, and the youtiao is crispy.
[caption id="attachment_6455" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: Shirley Yong[/caption]Price starts from $5. As there aren’t enough parking lots, come around 11am to avoid disappointment. If you value taste over presentation (don’t we all?), head down to judge their bak kut teh for yourself!

4. Image credit: Founder Bak Kut Teh @ Rangoon[/caption]
Here’s another established bak kut teh stall in Singapore. Like Ya Hua, Founder’s bak kut teh is also on the pricey side. The soup has a pleasant, distinctive smell; and the ribs are juicy. Note: the restaurant only accepts cash!

5. Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh

And not only that; at Sin Heng Claypot, you get both the Teochew and Hokkien version of the meat bone tea. A full meal costs around $12.
[caption id="attachment_6802" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: reennamelanie[/caption]One customer recommend eating it for supper to ensure a good night’s sleep. Keep calm and count sheep? More like, keep calm and eat bak koot teh.

6. Leon Kee Claypot Pork Rib Soup
[caption id="attachment_6804" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: giruyon_[/caption]At Leon Kee, you get the best of both worlds: tender pork ribs and thick, heavenly herbal broth. The Kuala Lumpur-styled bak kut teh costs $4.50. Most fans also recommend the side dishes (pig’s intestines and livers).

7. Seletar Nam Hoe
[caption id="attachment_6456" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: Seletar Nam Hoe Bak Kut Teh[/caption]I practically grew up eating Seletar Nam Hoe’s bak kut teh. It wasn’t easy finding the stall after it relocated from the Seletar Hills Market and Hawker Centre (it was demolished more than 10 years ago).
I thank my lucky stars.
[caption id="attachment_6457" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: Seletar Nam Hoe Bak Kut Teh[/caption]Here you’ll find a generous portion of meaty pork ribs at a pocket-friendly price. The soup is hot, rich, and savoury. The ribs are so thick and tender that you won’t mind having bits of it stuck in between your teeth. At just $5, you get your money’s worth.
I suggest having your meal here at around 11am. The crowd is not as packed as early in the morning. Brace yourself for the heat!

Who’s the star of Marsiling Lane? Why, it’s none other than Hong Ji Claypot. I reckon many fans would agree that when it comes to braised pig intestines and bak kut teh, Hong Ji is in a league of its own. If you appreciate thick, comforting soup, look no further than this!
[caption id="attachment_6453" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: titu5[/caption]Most of the dishes start from $5. Side dishes like peanuts, and youtiao will set you back a dollar. Finding seats can be a hassle, as the coffee shop is small. (It is, after all, located under a HDB block.) So if you want to drop by Hong Ji Claypot, make sure you know what you’re up against (but it’s all worth it)!

Here’re 7 Of SG’s Best Prawn Mee – Soupy, Flavourful, Fragrant
Our local prawn mee tends to be overshadowed by other popular dishes (think: chicken rice and chilli crab). Tell a frequent visitor to our country about our hae mee, they’ll tilt their head and ask, “I beg your pardon? What’s this alien language you’re talking about?”
It’s not their fault. I reckon it’s not too late to show our love for the underrated dish. Here are 7 great stalls every prawn mee connoisseur must visit!
1. Geylang Prawn Noodle
[caption id="attachment_6567" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: eatwhatah[/caption]When it comes to the best prawn mee in Singapore, you won’t forget about Geylang Prawn Noodle. At around $5 – $6, you get these medium sized freshwater prawns at superb quality. The eatery even hands out paper-made bowls for prawn shells. How’s that for recycling and cleanliness?
[caption id="attachment_6568" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: jennylqh[/caption]Judging from the usual crowd, it can be a pain in the butt to have your lunch here. If this is your first visit, consider heading down early!

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 8pm, Sunday 8am to 5pm
2. 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles
[caption id="attachment_6738" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: leshane[/caption]545 Whampoa has quite a history — the stall is helmed by a third generation hawker. Young and talented, it goes without saying that Ruifang, the boss, is a master chef. The pork meat and prawns are sensational, and the broth is the food for Gods.
[caption id="attachment_6739" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: tame_bunny[/caption]One thing’s for sure, Ruifang has done her family proud.
545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles

Opening hours: Monday & Tuesday 6.30am to 2pm, Thursday & Friday 6.30am to 2pm, Sunday 6.30am to 1pm
Price: $4+
3. Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee
[caption id="attachment_6690" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: iiixjaslynkhorviiiv[/caption]Just the name alone gives the impression that this prawn mee is made for the king. A common dish done uncommonly well, Jalan Sultan is one of the few stalls that gives free soup re-fills. A bowl of prawn mee costs $5, while the local favourite king prawn pork rib soup can set you back around $8.

Packed with flavour and a generous portion of yellow noodles (you may have it mixed with bee hoon), this stall is one of the main highlights of the Old Airport Road Food Centre.

5. Beach Road Prawn Noodles
[caption id="attachment_6806" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: michire1259[/caption]It only takes one look for your stomach to grumble for these magnificent prawns — this crunchy delicacy is begging to be eaten. Beach Road’s hae mee may be more expensive than other stalls, but judging by the crowd, it doesn’t look like anyone’s complaining.
[caption id="attachment_6807" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: shu55min[/caption]Beach Road Prawn Noodles

6. Noo Cheng Adam Road Prawn Noodle
[caption id="attachment_6564" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: w33sun[/caption]The big prawns are naturally tender and flavourful. And for good reason, because they’re freshly caught from the sea. The soup is appetising, to boot. A bowl of this prawn mee costs around $5-$6. Rumour has it that the dry version tastes better.

7. Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodles
[caption id="attachment_6562" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: ahkwee[/caption]There are four types of prawn mee to choose from at Wah Kee and they echo the five-multiplication table: $5, $10, $15, and $20. The $10 version is arguably the best choice of the lot.
[caption id="attachment_6604" align="aligncenter" width="427"] Image credit: Jeff Tan[/caption]Certainly more affordable than $15 and $20, and the portion is just right for a full meal. The garlicky soup has a tinge of spice, while the prawns are fresh and perfectly cooked. You can’t miss the prawn noodles at Wah Kee — that is, if you don’t mind queuing for at least an hour. True story.

13 Eateries Open All Day All Night For Your Late Night Meal!
There’s just no telling when the hunger pangs would start kicking in. Whether you had a super late day at work, or you’re just craving for a snack. Luckily, Singapore is in fact the food city that never sleeps.
No matter what time it is, come rain or snow (I wish), these places open all day err day to satisfy your tummy rumblings. So grab your nearest BFF and head down to these food joints for a sinful night of indulgence.
1. Fei Fei Wanton Mee
Undoubtedly one of the most raved about Wanton Mee in Singapore, it is perhaps unfortunate that portions are quite small. However, the springy texture and delicious flavor of the noodles make up for it. At ($4), I would recommend ordering it dry with added chilli sauce to complement the overall taste.

2. Diandin Leluk
Situated in Little Thailand, as it is affectionately known by locals, Diandin Leluk is the biggest Thai eatery in Golden Mile Complex. Popular dishes include Green Curry Chicken ($10) and Red Ruby ($3), a Thai coconut-milk dessert to cool off the spiciness. To sweeten the deal, there is also no service charge and GST!

3. RK Eating House
Regularly packed with a plethora of youths, especially late at night, RK House offers an extensive menu of North Indian Cuisine. Nestled in the boisterous Serangoon Gardens, give their crispy Plain Roti Prata ($1.20) a go. For drinks with friends, go for a Milo Tower ($12) to share.

4. 333 Bak Kut Teh
It’s a shame that this place doesn’t get nearly as much attention as compared to Founder’s Bak Kut Teh. Their Pork Ribs Soup ($6) is on par with Founder’s in terms of flavour and tenderness. The peppery aftertaste of the refillable soup really hits the spot too! I recommend completing your meal with Salted Vegetable ($2) and Tou Fu Skin ($2).

5. Meng’s Kitchen
Aww yesss, this Bak Chor Mee ($4) is so good that it deserves visits at least 2-3 times a week. The chilli and vinegar base perfectly provides the platform for the bouncy and chewy noodles to truly shine. Don’t get me started on the meatballs. Trust me, a single bowl is never enough.

6. Yong He Eating House
Located at a place synonymous with Singapore’s red light district, Yong He is the ideal place to try or reminisce Taiwanese delights at any time of the day. Their signature dishes include the Soya Bean Drink ($1.50), Beancurd ($2), and of course, who can leave out the silky vermicelli in a thick, flavorful broth – the savoury Mee Sua ($4) aka Taiwanese noodles.

7. Al-Ameen
The North has always been kind of a downer for supper, with almost a very limited selection of places that you could go for that 4am craving. Not anymore! Branching out from their origins in Bukit Timah, Al-Ameen serves up Thai Muslim favourites. For a gratifying experience, Butter Chicken ($7) with a side of Naan is the way to go.

8. Changi Airport 24 Hr Food Gallery
We all know that Changi Airport houses many 24-hour food choices. There’s McDonalds, KFC, 1983, Swensens, and so on… But, for a true dining experience that showcases Singapore’s cultural diversity, look no further than the 24 Hr Food Gallery at T1. Hey, what can go wrong with a plate of chicken rice or a bowl of steaming Laksa?

9. TCC
One of my favourite places to go to for a quiet read, TCC at the International Building at Orchard Road is a quiet and cosy location for late night mugging or meet-ups. The food is delicious and portions are generous, albeit on the pricier side. I would recommend a Dark Devotion ($13) to go with a cup of House Blend ($5.80).

10. 126 Dim Sum
As a regular patron, ‘Wan Dou Sek’ offers a no-frills dining experience of value for money dim sum. Usual delights include Carrot Cake ($4), Siew Mai ($3.20), and Man Tou with Chili Crab Sauce ($6). The major downside is that it may be hard to find a parking spot, and dishes may not be consistent from time to time.

11. Al-Azhar
Another place that serves Indian cuisine, Al-Azhar also offers an extensive menu which includes some Western cuisine selections. A food rival with Al-Ameen, which coincidentally is a mere walking distance away, Al-Azhar has its own charm. Tuck in to popular dish Butter Chicken ($7), and complement it with a side of Egg Thosai ($2).

12. Wong Chiew Restaurant
Renamed from Wong Chiew Eating House, this humble food joint serves a ‘chapalang’ of dishes. They offer dim sum and porridge for a delicious light meal or roasted meat and plenty of zi-char style dishes for a satisfying heavy meal. Not forgetting to mention, Wong Chiew’s famous Kampong Bucket Chicken ($14 for half-chicken), chicken served in herbal broth marinade. Till this day, the recipe remains a closely guarded secret.

13. New Mahamoodiya
What better way to end off the list with yet another Prata place! Situated just outside the effervescent Simpang Bedok area, New Mahamoodiya emanates a rustic, kampong style atmosphere. Pratas are their specialty, which come freshly made and piping hot. Their Egg Prata ($1.50) comes with chopped onions, adding a distinctive taste to the dish.

The Heat Is On! Are You Game For Some Competitive Eating?
You’ve probably seen Takeru Kobayashi shovel down hot dogs after hot dogs, or heard about L.A Beast a.k.a skippy62able who posts videos of his eating challenges on YouTube. But do you know that the competitive eating scene in Singapore is also very…competitive?
[caption id="attachment_6776" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Food League Singapore[/caption]Earlier this year in January, competitive eater Zermatt Neo made headlines by chucking down a whopping 4kg of chicken rice under 30 minutes! (If you have no idea how much 4kg of chicken rice is, that’s basically 10 people‘s lunch) Then in February, he took on another challenge and wolfed down a 21-inch pizza in 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6rOJxLR1Sc
It’s a chicken rice party in him tummy
If your face isn’t contorted in shock, Zermatt also boasts (in different occasions) The Beast Burger Challenge, 123 sticks of Lok Lok in 30 minutes, 150 sticks of satay, 100 gyozas, 100 chicken wings and….
[caption id="attachment_6761" align="alignnone" width="446"] Image source: Beast? What beast?JCube’s So Spicy Challenge
Not everyone has a huge tummy capacity but one thing for sure is that we Singaporeans sure love spicy food. If you’re one of those who is always going “more chilli, add sambal, extra spicy…”, how about putting your tongue’s spicy-o-meter to the test with JCube’s #SoSpicyChallenge?
[caption id="attachment_6771" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: So Spicy Challenge[/caption]With the Qualifying Round taking place on the 14th, 15th and 21st of May, and the Grand Finale on the 22nd of May, this year’s edition of the #SoSpicyChallenge will definitely turn the heat on. How hot? It’s gonna be like winner gets to fly to Japan kind of hot.
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="480"] Image source: JCube. They will contact you with participation details. You can also head down to JCube’s Customer Service Counter at B1 at the mall to get your copy of J.Mag, which is loaded with information about the challenge.
Alternatively, you can earn your way for a direct entry to the quarter finals of the #SoSpicyChallenge by taking the spicy trail and collecting your ‘battle scars’. This challenge has already begun and all you have to do is challenge the dishes at the participating outlets (as above) and collect your stamps at B1 Customer Service Counter with your receipt. Once you’ve collected 120 points with at least 1 stamp from each spicy level, you’ve literally eaten your way to the quarter finals.
Think you have what it takes for the #SoSpicyChallenge? We highly recommend you to sign up with a group of friends and settle the “I have a higher spicy tolerance level than you” feud once and for all.

Enjoy Oysters From All Over The World! You’ll Have A Shell Of A Time.
Oyster lovers, listen up! The World Oyster Festival by Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro is back for another year!
[caption id="attachment_6600" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro[/caption]Set to take place on the 1st of July 2016, this will be the fourth edition of the bistro’s very own festival. Like every other year, the festival boasts a good 20 varieties of oysters flown in from around the world for this special festival. Did we also mention that these juicy succulent oysters are fresh? They’re not frozen.
[caption id="attachment_6601" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro[/caption]It is safe to say that July is the best time for us to enjoy oysters. Cold water is where you can harvest great shellfishes and around that time of the year, the waters in the northern hemisphere is still chilly and the southern hemisphere has already entered winter. That is literally the best of both worlds.
[caption id="attachment_6602" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro [/caption]The World Oyster Festival is not only about eating fresh oysters but also a crash course in #oysters101. Like fine wine, the flavours of oysters differ according to region. Some can be a little more salty than others, while others are creamier, richer, metallic or even fruity like the Kumamoto Oysters (our personal favourite) that are famed for a honey dew finish.
[caption id="attachment_6603" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro[/caption]Greenwood has yet to announce the price for this festival. Looking at past festivals, this is going to be a shell of a time. So mark it down on your calendar, share the news with your friends (don’t be shellfish) and follow us for more updates!

Durian Lovers! The Best 5 Spots To Enjoy Your Favourite Fruit
What’s spiky on the outside and soft on the inside?
No, it’s not a cactus.
And heck no, it’s definitely not a studded, spiked leather jacket.
It’s durian.
Now that the weather is unbearable these days, we can’t help but wonder — could the ‘king of fruits’ take a hit from the heat? We sure hope not. We’re keeping our fingers and toes crossed for good measure. In the meantime, take a look at this curated list and see if any of these stalls strike your fancy.
Wonderful Durian
[caption id="attachment_5661" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image credit: Wonderful Durian[/caption]Wonderful Durian’s very own durians are planted in a kampung called Terentai in Malaysia. The stall is well known for its Mao Shan Wang (Mountain Cat King), Phoenix, and D24 durians. Rumour has it that a D197 Mao Shan Wang can cost up to $200++. We have no doubt that it’s delicious. The question is, are you ready to shell out hundreds of dollars for these durians?

Chong Pang City
Chong Pang City (in Yishun) is home to one of the cheapest durians in Singapore. Here, you can find different kinds of durians selling at 3 for $20, or 1 for $8. One time, a durian piece was going for 20 cents.
Pro tip: visit the stalls during the late evenings. Trust us, you don’t want to go and haggle over the price under the scorching sun.

Ah Seng Durian
[caption id="attachment_5677" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image credit: Ah Seng Durian[/caption]Here, a 5.5kg of Mao Shan Wang can set you back at around $70++. Besides selling an interesting range of durians, Ah Seng also stocks traditionally homemade lime and sour plum concentrate ($12/bottle) to help with digestion and to keep the flu bug at bay — a smart move, considering durians are known to be ‘heaty’ fruits.
I see what you did there, Ah Seng.

[caption id="attachment_5813" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image credit: Combat Durian[/caption]Here, the D24 and Mao Shan Wang durians are the hot favourites. 1kg of Mao Shan Wang can cost around $25. The first bite of the creamy sweet durian is so awesome, it feels like a religious experience. The service is top-notch, to boot.

Sindy Durian
[caption id="attachment_5701" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image credit: Sindy Durian[/caption]This family business does not take a single break in the middle of the durian season — that’s how dedicated they are. One Facebook user recounted an experience when the queue was long and the staff wasted no time by speeding up their customer service. Another spent an hour and a half queuing for Mao Shan Wang and enthused that it was worth the wait.
This is not to be missed if you value tasty durians and impeccable service.
