Forget Salted Egg Croissant, Cheese Tart Coming Through!

Gone were the days where we had to go all the way to Osaka, Japan to try Pablo’s infamous yakitate cheese tart (baked cheese tarts). Now, we even have our own localised version with salted egg yolk!  So ladies and gentlemen, let’s put salted egg croissants aside and start discovering cheese tarts!

1. Bake Cheese Tart

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BEFmiWDnrs2/?taken-at=1024098622[/embed]

Originally from Hokkaido, Bake may be the latest tart store in Singapore and they sure know how to bake up a storm. Their signature baked cheese tart is made from two Hokkaido and one French cream cheese variety. The cream cheese, baked to a glorious golden, sits in crispy pastry. This cheese tart has gotten Hong Kong-ers waiting for over two hours just to get a bite of it.

[caption id="attachment_5605" align="aligncenter" width="1139"] Credit: Bake Cheese Tart[/caption]

Apparently, it is Bake’s special double-bake method that makes the tart particularly yummy. The process starts in Japan. First, the crust of the tart is baked, and the cheese is poured into it. Then in Singapore, the tart will be baked for a second time at 200 celsius. If the tart is not baked long enough, it won’t be crunchy. And if the cheese is overbaked, it won’t be in a molten state. It’s all about the skills! Bake Cheese Tart will begin operations at the end of April at ION Orchard.

2. Prima Deli

For those who enjoyed the salted egg yolk croissant, here is something that will hit you like a crescendo. Local baker Prima Deli has recently launched not one but two types of cheese tarts – Original Lava Cheese Tart and Salted Egg Lava Cheese Tart, at a very reasonable price. It is so popular that their cheese tarts have sold out in an hour.

3. The Icing Room

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BEGOTsXmpQc/?tagged=theicingroom[/embed]

Also on the cheese tart bandwagon is The Icing Room with their very cheesy, soft like tofu Original, Tiramisu (not available yet) and Golden Lava (salted egg) Cheese Tarts. What we love about these tarts is the consistency of the texture, so velvety and smooth in your mouth, and the cheesiness is not too over the top.

[caption id="attachment_5609" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Credit: The Icing Room[/caption]

If you think one is never enough, they’re currently having a buy 3 get 1 free promotion with each tart priced at $2 (limited quantities available). The cheese tarts are currently available at The Icing Room Nex@Serangoon outlet and will soon be making a debut at BreadTalk. They will also be dishing out their Tiramisu flavoured cheese tarts in the near future.

4. Flor Pâtisserie

You know you can always count on Japanese bakeries for drool worthy and ‘so pretty I don’t have the heart to eat’ desserts. To get your artisanal ice cheese tart fix, we highly recommend FLOR Pâtisserie, a Japanese-styled patisserie serving authentic Japanese-inspired French pastry.

You might want to bring some friends along because their cheese tarts are available in 8 different flavours- Original, Earl Grey, Green Tea, Caramel, Chocolate, Orange and Maple (more friends, more chance to try different flavours). And the best part? FLOR’s cheese tarts are almond cookie based, giving extra flavour.

CURATE: Asia’s 1st Showcase Restaurant For Michelin Star Cuisine In SG

Sentosa draws in throngs of visitors for its beaches, marine attractions, and of course, the popular Universal Studios theme park. But come April, you might have another reason to head to this popular island. CURATE promises to be Asia’s first Michelin Chef showcase restaurant where you can taste the finest culinary creations of visiting Michelin-starred chefs, right within the tropical paradise that is Resorts World Sentosa.

[caption id="attachment_4699" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image credit: rwsentosablog.com[/caption]

Not to be confused with your typical Michelin-starred restaurants (although those are worth visiting too of course!), CURATE is unique in that it allows customers to savour multiple Michelin-starred chefs’ creations through their Art at Curate series. Each series will see a different chef helming the kitchen at CURATE, with the restaurant being a stage for them to showcase their best works of culinary art.

And as with any fine-dining affair, you can expect the highest quality wines to go with your meal as well. In partnership with the influential wine authority, Robert Parker Wine Advocate, Art at Curate will have the expert wine reviewers from their team hand-pick the best wines to complement each meal.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BAhv-arShwt/[/embed]

CURATE’s debut showcase will feature La Calandre’s chef, Massimiliano Alajmo. Being the world’s youngest chef to be awarded the coveted three Michelin stars when he was just 28 years old, Alajmo has a knack for bringing out the truest flavours of the ingredients that he uses to create multi-sensorial dishes in his distinctive style. Along with his love for exquisite seasonal ingredients and flair molecular gastronomy, you’ll be in for a gourmet treat at the inaugural series of Art at Curate.

9 Chillout Spots In Jurong You Need To Call Your Own

Jurong? Let’s see. It has IMM, Bird Park and uhhhh, Science Centre?

Not exactly one of the coolest neighbourhoods in Singapore, the impression of this industrial area can be kinda vague. What else is cool in Jurong besides Snow City, right? But after a little digging, we realise that there are a few gems buried in the sands of the Wild West.

So chin up Westsiders, from tucking into bingsus to throwing electronic darts, listed below are nine chillout spots you can proudly call yours.

1. Coffee Nowhere

Coffee… no where? Now here? What is going on here.

Located within Nanyang Community Centre, we think this café is a hidden gem. Besides serving up a great Cappuccino ($5.80), this café also offers desserts such as waffles with ice-cream. So if you’re looking for a cosy café to host your coffee talks, look nowhere else because great coffee is now here in the West. Well, we did our best.

Not only does it offer a decent range of bingsus, but it also offers these ice-y desserts that are one of the most affordable around. Besides whacky desserts such as the Split Personality (vanilla ice-cream, cendol, red bean & gula melaka) and Artic Bombshell (chocolate ganache, vanilla ice-cream, chocolate cake & meringue), this eatery also serves a mean Smoked Duck Pizza. So if you’re looking for a place to have your meal and dessert, Toby’s is definitely the place to be.

An Underground Bar Event With Complimentary Drinks? Basement Seah Damn Happening Sia!

It’s been a looong week and Friday can’t come soon enough. We understand the wait for the weekend can be painful. In fact, the day before TGIF is usually the worst. But instead of staying down, we’re going to get you pumped for TGIF with some after-work Thursday chill and booze. Nobody said you had to wait till the weekend to have fun, right?

[caption id="attachment_5373" align="alignnone" width="1202"] Check out the unique vintage décor![/caption]

Mr Punch Public House

Introducing Mr Punch Public House, a quirky yet cosy bar we recently stumbled across. Tucked away in the basement of the Museum of Toys is this unassuming gastropub, with its vintage décor and cosy ambience. It exuded the kind of odd familiarity that quickly put us at ease.

[caption id="attachment_5374" align="alignnone" width="1642"] If this isn’t cozy, we don’t know what is.[/caption]

Mr. Punch Public House is a concept inspired by the puppet show ‘Punch & Judy’ (the younglings will probably have no idea what this is) with the Public House being Mr. Punch’s last destination as a world-traveller. So this bar is akin to Mr. Punch’s treasure trove of memories; pretty interesting concept, we have to say.

Basement Seah

Every Thursday from 7pm to 11pm, the bar transforms into a cosy dinner spot that takes you back to the ‘60s. Known as Basement Seah, this retro themed night will have you immersed in both fun and nostalgia as the DJ puts a modern spin on some of the era’s most popular swing music. That’s right, a live DJ. Who knew you could enjoy great music, booze and feel cosy all at the same time?

[caption id="attachment_5418" align="alignnone" width="5184"] The Pimm’s Cup[/caption]

Drinks

Mr. Punch Public House offers an extensive drinks menu that includes the unique Cocktail World Tour, a curated series of international cocktails carefully thought out by its bartenders. From Malaysia’s Jungle Bird ($17) to the Russian Cocaine ($14), we’re pretty sure you’ll find a cocktail or two that suits you. If you’re more into wines, we bring good news. Simply RSVP at 8339 8966 with your email address and quote DISCOVER MR PUNCH to receive a complimentary glass of wine this Thursday, 14th April 2016!

[caption id="attachment_5376" align="alignnone" width="1369"] The Platter[/caption]

Food

Feeling peckish? There is a brand new sharing menu that offers an electic mix of cuisines. Start with the Platter ($35/three dishes) and choose from dishes such as freshly Grilled Tiger Prawns, deliciously marinated Marmite Glazed Squid Rings, and tender Slow-Cooked Pork Belly. Though not included, we thought the unique Potato Chip Chicken (potato chip breaded chicken) makes a great tapas.

[caption id="attachment_5377" align="alignnone" width="4000"] Bacon Wrapped Venison Loin[/caption]

Looking for something a little more filling? Give its signature Herb-Crusted Barramundi ($29) or its Bacon-Wrapped Venison Loin ($45) a try. Though slightly pricier, we’re confident that the dinning experience at Mr Punch will be value for money.

Whether you’re looking for a unique yet cosy bar to take your after work conversations to or a place for an evening of pre-TGIF fun, Basement Seah@Mr Punch Public House is definitely the place to be. Remember, simply RSVP at 8339 8966 with your email address and quote DISCOVER MR PUNCH to receive your complimentary wine!

With its great ambience, refreshing music, lip-smacking food and free booze, if you’re not reaching out for your phone to RSVP now, we’d do it for you.

9 Quick Meals For The Busy Working Adult

When we’re caught up with the responsibilities at work, we tend to forget our hungry tummies. So consider taking some time off to prepare a quick meal that will surely leave you wanting for more.  There’s no need to worry, you don’t have to be a master chef to whip these up. All you require is a simple kitchen and the willpower to try something new!

1. RedMart’s Thai Chicken Curry with Crunchy Vegetables and Fragrant Basmati

[caption id="attachment_5115" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image Credit: RedMart[/caption]

If you’re craving for something spicy, you’re in luck! You can easily create a hearty meal of Thai chicken curry mixed with French beans, baby corn and eggplants. All the ingredients you need can be conveniently ordered at local online grocery store RedMart as a set, so you’ll only need to put on your chef hat and start cooking!

[caption id="attachment_5116" align="alignnone" width="700"] Image Credit: RedMart[/caption]

Ingredients (provided by RedMart):
Red Curry Paste
Fish Sauce
Basmati Rice
Chicken Fillet
Coconut Cream
French Beans
Eggplant
Baby Corn
Coriander

Other Required Ingredients:
Salt
Cooking Oil

Directions:

  1. Bring the rice to a boil with double the amount of water (use a cup to measure) and a pinch of salt. Once boiling, stir a little, put a lid on, and turn the heat to low. Cook for 15 minutes and set aside when done.
  2. Wash and dry all veggies and get chopping. Cut the ends off the beans and halve them, halve the baby corns lengthwise and – after disposing of the cap – cut eggplant to large chunks.
  3. Rinse chicken with cold water and pat dry with paper towel. Cut them into chunks that are slightly larger than bite-sized.
  4. Put a big frying pan or a medium wok on the fire and add some cooking oil. Once hot, throw in the chicken and curry paste, and fry for 2 minutes on high heat.
  5. Pour in the coconut cream and all prepared veggies. Refill the entire coconut cream container with water, swish around and tip into the pan. Let the curry come to a gentle bubble, turn down the heat and keep it on a simmer for about 7 minutes, stirring it regularly.
  6. If the sauce gets too thick, add a little more water.
  7. While the curry is bubbling, wash and chop up the fresh coriander leaves (discard the stems).
  8. Towards the end, add the fish sauce to the pot and give it a final stir.
  9. The curry is done when the beans and eggplants are cooked but still have their crunchiness.
  10. Serve with hot basmati rice and sprinkle fresh coriander on top.

RedMart also offers other ready-to-cook recipes and ingredients for you to choose, so feel free to head down to their website and try out the different meals you can make!

2. Macaroni and Cheese

A 3 Minute Rundown Of Timbre’s Newly Launched Container & Food Truck-Style Food Court

We’re sure you’ve heard of the newly opened Timbre+ by now. And if you haven’t, you’ll want to drop by for a meal after reading this. Here’s all the juicy highlights in less than 3 minutes.

As many an Instagram post would show, this container and food truck-style food court features vibrant graffiti, high ceilings, and neon store signs. Started by the team behind Timbre, a popular night’s out option for drinks and live music, Timbre+ seems to give off a more food-oriented version of Timbre’s laid-back appeal.

Maybe it’s because of the novelty of this new gastropark, or maybe it’s because of its cool hipster quotient, but the lunch time crowd is no joke, so you might want to avoid the lunch hour if you’re not a fan of crowds. But more importantly, let’s talk about the delicious and extensive food selection at Timbre+.

Food

With 21 hawkers and 14 restaurant brands, you won’t be disappointed with their mix of well-loved local favourites and affordable restaurant-level cuisine that caters to different price points. (Note: the restaurants mostly open for the evening crowd after 3pm.)

From the Nasi Padang store’s fluffy pratas, to Teppei Daidokoro’s Kaisen Don, to Fishball Story’s handmade fishball noodles, to Dancing Crab Shack’s Cajun seafood, to Chit Chaat Chai’s North Indian street bites, to Portico’s Spanish tapas and indulgent churros, you can look forward to tasting all sorts of cuisine at Timbre+.

That said, we think pictures certainly speak louder than words, especially where food is concerned, so have fun scrolling and we’ll let the pictures do the talking.

South East Asia’s First Pompompurin Cafe Is Coming to Singapore this April!

You’ve seen photos of your friends braving the queue at Harajuku and during your last Hong Kong trip, you just didn’t have the time for this…

No more regrets because South East Asia’s very first Pompompurin Cafe is coming to town this 18th of April!!

[caption id="attachment_4973" align="alignnone" width="300"] Image source: Sanrio’s FB Page[/caption]

For people who are not familiar with Sanrio characters, Pompompurin is a golden retriever dog with a brown beret. The cute little pup loves drinking milk, eating purin (pudding)and enjoys collecting and hiding shoes. He may not be as well known as Hello Kitty but his very adorable character has won the heart of fans and earned the ‘Most Popular Sanrio Character’ title in 2015.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="599"] Like many of us, Pompompurin love shoes too.   Image source: Pompompurin’s Twitter page[/caption]

Set to open at Level 4 of Orchard Central,  fans can expect a kawaii experience on all things Pompompurin at the cafe. From the decor, theme colour, to the cutlery, table mats, and a full menu of food and desserts in the figure of Pompompurin.

Also, the cafe can only accommodate a total of 78 people. You might want to be early and start queuing up before its go time.

You Can Now Fish & Dine At Singapore’s First Kelong Restaurant! You’ll Want To Check This Out!

Fancy a short, idyllic getaway after a long week’s worth of work or study? Seek a different kind of adventure from the normal dining experience in Singapore? Well, calm down, because Smith Marine Kelong is quite literally, a great catch!

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/-GpBXHtpUs/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed]

Singapore’s Floating Kelong Restaurant

Originally an aquaculture farm (a place where farmers cultivate aquatic organisms such as fish) back in 2006, or kelong in local context, Smith Marine Kelong has evolved into one of the most unique places to dine at for delectable seafood!

Although Smith Marine is not Singapore’s first kelong, it remains in our unique history because it has adapted according to shifting times and has emerged as Singapore’s first one-of-a-kind kelong restaurant.

For those who don’t know, “kelong” is a Malay word describing a form of offshore platform built with wood (imagine a house on long sticks in the sea). Built by fishermen for fishing purposes, only a handful remain in Singapore due to urbanisation (yet another reason to visit this place!).

Food at Smith Marine Kelong

Check out the amazing “zi-char” style dishes of the restaurant! My favorite is their signature Chilli Crab with Man Tou!

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/80BSSbNTEo/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed] [embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/8vWxxAoWSW/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed] [embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/80JgI2tHgF/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed] [embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/-YrIO9vWl7/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed]

You may call, SMS, or Whatsapp them for their menu. There is also no tax or service charge! Say what?!

Situated next to Pulau Ubin, this modern kelong has a solid base structure, a tiled floor and a roof over your head while you take in the scenes. It looks really modernised, like a chalet on water. The place is spacious and clean, so not to worry, you won’t be walking on cramped rickety wooden kelongs from the olden days! Oh yes, don’t worry about a “fish” smell around the kelong because the farms are sheltered off.

Fish at Smith Marine Kelong

Did I mention that you can fish for your own food? You heard me right, because yes you can!

As a fun pre-meal activity, diners can try their hands in the ‘sure-catch’ pond with fishing rods and baits provided. The pond is filled with Snapper and Sea Bass. Even the most amateur fishers can catch something (trust me). It’s a great experience for first-timers too!

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/_v2ChBAuRE/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed] [embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/-D35RIL_IF/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed]

The fish you catch can be given to the chef to be cooked to your liking in the restaurant ($35.00). You can also take them home at ($15.00). This isn’t a catch-and-release fishing pond so you’ll have to choose one option.

What to do at Smith Marine Kelong

Aside from fishing, visitors can take a leisurely stroll on the decks of the kelong to enjoy the cool breeze, see fish being farmed, or take some amazing pictures. Bear in mind that some parts of the farm are not accessible to the public.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BAUIQspw1Lc/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed] [embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/_0re7GpvRW/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed] [embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/81wlfNHaya/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed]

That’s not all! You may even enjoy a game of pool, lay in a hammock or simply bask on the deck and witness the amazing sunset.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/1r7okLTI5e/?taken-at=312813385&hl=en[/embed]

Tips

Since they are in the middle of the sea, the weather will be hot. However, visitors can sit by the waiting area to enjoy the cool breeze and dip your feet into the cool waters.

Be wary of inclement weather. Your trip is best enjoyed if there is no rain. So, make sure you check the weather forecast beforehand!

Getting there

To get to Smith Marine Kelong, you will have to book a 2-way ferry at S$100 which can carry up to 12 pax. So it is best to get more of your friends or family to come along. (It doesn’t link to anywhere else, so just a simple to-and-fro journey)
