If you have a sweet tooth, go for the Turon (Banana Spring Roll) or the Leche Flan (Filipino Creme Caramel).

The price is cheap too, between $5 to $10 for a meal set. It’s no wonder the place is always crowded on weekends.

What’s a better indicator than satisfied repeat customers and large crowds?

Don Don Donki Is Finally Opening On Dec 1 And They Basically Flew Japan In For S’poreans

Japanese discount store, Don Quijote, better known as Don Don Donki, will be opening its store in Orchard Central on 1 December 2017.

[caption id="attachment_32050" align="aligncenter" width="816"] Image Credit: Vulcan Post[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_32052" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Shuji Umetani[/caption]

If you’re hungry, Don Don Donki will also be partnering with Hokkaido Marche to offer a dining experience that we are all familiar with. Just imagine Marche serving up Japanese food.

Another highlight of the Singapore outlet is the takeaway delicatessen section in the supermarket which will offer sushi, sashimi and tons of Japanese goodies.

[caption id="attachment_32053" align="aligncenter" width="574"] Image Credit: @donkisg[/caption] [caption id="attachment_32054" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Don Don Donki[/caption] [caption id="attachment_32055" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Don Don Donki[/caption]

The cheapest item that you can find at Singapore’s Don Don Donki is the Calbee Jagatico Salad ($0.50). The most expensive item is the 35-year-old Hibiki Suntory Whisky which costs a whopping $80,000.

There’s also the exclusive Don Don Donki bar. There are only 2 outlets in the world. One here in Singapore, and the other in Tachikawa, Tokyo.

The Japanese bar serves a variety of sake, whisky and beer. Unlike the 24-hour outlet, it operates from 4pm – 2am on Sunday to Thursday and 4pm – 3am on Friday and Saturday.

Shoppers will also be thrilled to know that the alcohol section of the supermarket offers alcoholic drinks that are not available at other Don Don Donki branches.

With this opening, we know where we’ll be shopping and buying groceries from now on.

Ngee Ann City, Bishan And 6 Other Places You Didn’t Know Were Once Cemeteries

Did you know that Singapore has had over 21 cemeteries in the past? However, Singapore only has 3 active cemeteries now. The Lim Chu Kang cemetery, Pusara Aman Cemetery and Pusara Abadi Cemetery.

Due to the land scarcity that we face, graves had to be exhumed and cemeteries were cleared to make way for urban development. Today, many buildings stand atop old burial sites.

From HDBs to shopping malls, we’ve compiled a list of the places that were once cemeteries.

A Land With A Past

1. Fort Canning

Before it was Fort Canning, it was known as Bukit Larangan, which means “Forbidden Hill” in Malay. Built on it was an early Christian cemetery that was established there in 1822, and closed in 1865.

Following the closure of the Bukit Larangan Cemetery, the Fort Canning Cemetery was established.

[caption id="attachment_32000" align="aligncenter" width="510"] Image Credit: The Long and Winding Road[/caption] [caption id="attachment_32001" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Image Credit: @ashleysoo_[/caption]

The doll was subsequently removed by SMRT staff. But it is still creepy.

3. Novena MRT Station

There was another Jewish cemetery that was recorded to be located just north of Moulmein road, adjacent to Thomson Road and Newton Road. It was established just before the First World War.

However in 1985, the cemetery was closed and the area was reclaimed for the development of a then-new MRT station.

If you look at the map, the only MRT station there is Novena MRT station.

[caption id="attachment_32012" align="aligncenter" width="666"] Image Credit: Google Maps[/caption] [caption id="attachment_32013" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Jewish Welfare Board[/caption]

4. Ngee Ann City

The site where Ngee Ann City is standing on, used to be a Teochew Cemetery called ‘Tie Swah Ting’. It was established by the Ngee Ann Kongsi, a Chinese Teochew charitable association in 1845.

The cemetery spanned 72 acres of land and housed 25,000 to 30,000 graves. However, in 1957, the cemetery was cleared and some of the land was acquired by the government.

A 10-storey Ngee Ann building was built on the land, though it was demolished in 1985. Today, the Ngee Ann City Shopping Complex and Civic Plaza can be found at this old burial site.

[caption id="attachment_32031" align="aligncenter" width="668"] Image Credit: Flickr User Nicolas Lannuzel[/caption]

Even though it has been disproved by Ngee Ann City’s architect, there is still a rumour going around in Singapore that the complex was designed to look like a Chinese tombstone.

Do you see that the flagpoles resemble joss sticks and the fountain in the civic plaza resembles wine offerings?

5. Caldecott Broadcast Centre

Caldecott Hill used to house a Chinese cemetery. The land was purchased to be used as a burial ground for Chinese people. However, the cemetery was closed to build a mansion.

Oddly enough, a fire broke out and razed the mansion to the ground, killing the whole family. The old Mediacorp Caldecott Broadcast Centre used to be situated on the hill.

[caption id="attachment_32032" align="aligncenter" width="580"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Wikipedia[/caption]

Today, Woodleigh MRT station sits on part of the old cemetery and HDB has commenced work on turning the area into a housing estate with HDB flats and private houses that will be complete by 2018.

7. Bishan

Before Bishan became Bishan, it was a World War 2 battle site and subsequently a Chinese cemetery known as the Kampong San Teng cemetery.

[caption id="attachment_32034" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: hiveminer[/caption] [caption id="attachment_32035" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: hiveminer[/caption]

The Chinese cemetery was eventually closed to make way for HDB estates and the kampong was renamed from San Teng to what we now know as, Bishan.

Honourable Mention

8. Bukit Brown

Did you know that Bukit Brown has an MRT station?

Yes, you read that right. Bukit Brown MRT station. If you’re squinting at your phone trying to spot Bukit Brown MRT station on the SMRT map, you won’t find it.

Bukit Brown MRT station is located somewhere between Caldecott station and Botanic Gardens station.

[caption id="attachment_32036" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Image Credit: Wikipedia[/caption]

It is currently not in operation as the ‘station’ is located at an empty plot of land that’s smack dab in the middle of the Bukit Brown cemetery and the Chinese cemetery at Mt. Pleasant.

[caption id="attachment_32037" align="aligncenter" width="893"] Image Credit: Google Maps[/caption]

However, the government has announced plans to build a 4-lane road which will cut through Bukit Brown cemetery and the rest of the cemetery will be cleared to make way for new public housing town in 40 year’s time.

Singapore is a small country and eventually all cemeteries will have to make way for housing development. Would you live in an estate built over an old cemetery?

Cheapest Places To Park In Orchard – 2017 Edition

Orchard Road is one area in Singapore where it’s notoriously expensive to park your car.

I’m sure we’ve all experienced the horror of arriving at the car park exit gantry, only to find that we’ve racked up over $10 in parking fees (true story). And that’s on top of all the money we’ve spent shopping.

Unless you have loads of things to carry, or are travelling with kids in tow, there’s just no justifying spending that kind of money on what is essentially a place to put your car while you run around doing your errands.

As someone who’s in town way too often, I decided to find out where the cheapest places to park in town are. Here are the cheapest places to park your car no matter where in town you need to go, and I promise, they’re all unde 500m away.

Instead of parking at ION Orchard, park at:

[caption id="attachment_31826" align="alignnone" width="2303"] Image Credit: Marketing-Interactive[/caption]

Mon – Fri (before 5pm): $2.67 for 1st hr; $1.28 for subsequent 30 min
Mon – Fri (after 5pm): $3/entry
Sat – Sun/PH (before 5pm): $2.56 for 1st hr; $1.88 for subsequent 30 min
Sat – Sun/PH (after 5pm): $3.74/entry

If you can help it, don’t park at ION Orchard unless it’s after 5pm. I learned this lesson the hard way.

1. (Postal Code: 238884)

Distance: 400m/6 min walk

Mon – Fri (before 5pm): $2.40 for 1st hr; $1.20 for subsequent 30 min
Mon – Fri (after 5pm): $3.20 per entry
Sat (before 5pm): $2.60 for 1st hr; $1.40 for subsequent 30 min
Sat (after 5pm): $3.20 per entry
Sun/PH: $3.20 per entry

Best for parking on Sundays, Public Holidays, and Mondays to Saturdays after 5pm.

3. (Postal Code: 238881)

Distance: 240m/3 min walk

Daily (before 6pm): $2.50 for 1st hr; $1.30 for subsequent 30 min
Daily (after 6pm): $3.80 per entry

Best for parking everyday after 6pm.

5. Image Credit: Teehee[/caption]

Mon – Sat (before 6pm): $2.14 for 1st hr; $1.07 for subsequent 30 min
Mon – Sat (after 6pm): $4.82 for 1st 3hr; $1.61 for subsequent 30 min
Sun/PH: $4.82 for 1st 3hr; $1.61 for subsequent 30 min
(GST. not included)

Of the major malls along Orchard Road, 313@Somerset actually has pretty good parking rates. But in the case that the car park is full, or you want to save even more on parking, here are some great alternatives.

1. (Postal Code: 237978)

Distance: 350m/5 min walk

Mon – Fri (before 5pm): $2.05/hr

B Burger Serves Cheeseburgers With A Japanese Twist And It’s Pure Umami Magic

Fusion food has always been a hit-or-miss in the world of gastronomy.

However, this newest fast food joint has managed to perfect their recipes for Japanese-American fusion burgers.

Meet B Burger, a quaint new burger joint located at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard, serving up classic American burgers with a Japanese twist.

[caption id="attachment_31399" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] Image Credit: B Burger[/caption]

Picture yourself biting into a juicy, toasty burger in a backdrop of palm trees, artsy murals and neon lights juxtaposed against a wall of 80s paraphernalia. That is the B Burger experience.

Feel Good Vibes Meets Feel Good Food

If you thought you’ve had the best burger you can possibly have in your lifetime, hold that thought.

B Burger serves up classic American burgers with a Japanese twist. Picture daikon pickles replacing gherkins, or an okonomiyaki re-imagined with a bratswurst and served as a corn dog.

That’s the Osaka Corn Dog ($6.90).

[caption id="attachment_31425" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] Osaka Corn Dog ($6.90)[/caption]

The signature B Burger ($6.90 to $11.90) is a cheeseburger that features a single portion of juicy beef patty, daikon pickles, tomato, lettuce, cheese and their secret B Sauce. Double and triple patty options are also available for their burgers.

[caption id="attachment_31420" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] B Burger ($6.90 for single patty, $8.90 for double, $11.90 for triple)[/caption]

The other burger to look out for is the Bomchika Wow Wow ($9.90). Buttermilk fried chicken burger, sriracha honey (YASSS), truffle mayo, homemade wafu slaw, topped with a fried egg. If this doesn’t get you salivating, we don’t know what will.

[caption id="attachment_31421" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Bomchika Wow Wow ($9.90)[/caption]

For those seeking a vegetarian option, there’s a burger for you. Meet the Umami Burger ($7.90). A combination of buttermilk fried Portobello, melted cheddar, garnished with a sprinkling of nori flakes.

[caption id="attachment_31422" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Umami Burger ($7.90)[/caption]

Going meat-free has never tasted so good.

B Burger didn’t forget about their sides either. Some of the interesting sides are the Nacho Soup ($3.50) and the Wafu Ramen Slaw ($3.50).

The Nacho Soup is exactly what you think it is. All of the cheese and nacho shards. Like Beer Cheese Soup, without the beer. So, really just cheese soup.

[caption id="attachment_31423" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Nacho Soup ($3.50)[/caption]

The Wafu Ramen Slaw is B Burger’s homemade coleslaw with Japanese dressing and dried ramen noodles for crunch.

[caption id="attachment_31424" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Wafu Ramen Slaw ($3.50)[/caption]

Remember to eat your veggies, kids!

You can pay an additional $3.50 for a side and a drink to go with your burger for a more filling meal!

Food aside, the tropical motifs plastered on the walls of the joint really brightens up our mood. Vibrant, colourful, and cheerful.

If the food doesn’t make you smile, the decor will.

Eating here isn’t just a meal. It’s a visual and gastronomic experience.

Head down to B Burger if you’re craving for a good burger!

Michelin-Starred Tsuta Adds Two Duck Ramen Dishes To Their Menu And It’s Ducking Good

Ramen fans, there’s a new ramen coming to you, and this one comes courtesy of none other than Michelin-starred ramen restaurant Tsuta.

If you’ve been to Tsuta, you’ll know that the limited seating restaurant sees queues daily at both its Orchard and Tai Seng branches. You’ll also know that they serve up sumptuous bowls of their signature fragrant truffle oil blended Shoyu Soba.

[caption id="attachment_31206" align="aligncenter" width="860"] Image Credit: lancescape[/caption]

If you’re a fan of Chef Yuki Onishi’s truffle-y take on Japanese ramen, or just love trying different, novel ramen dishes in general, you’ll love what Chef Yuki Onishi has cooked up just for his Singaporean customers.

An Ode To Duck

For their first year anniversary in Singapore, Tsuta has come up with not one but two ramen dishes, and the star ingredient is a meat we Singaporeans eat plenty of: duck.

Noticing the popularity of the ingredient during his visit to Singapore in 2016, Chef Yuki Onishi decided to create a ramen dish inspired by it. After experimenting with different recipes and cooking methods for a year, he created 2 ramen dishes: the dry Kamo Abura Soba, and Kamo Paitan Soba which is served in soup

[caption id="attachment_31202" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Kamo Abura Soba[/caption]

The Kamo Abura Soba ($10) features noodles that have been marinated with premium shoyu and duck oil. Creamy, with an umami flavour, the ramen noodle comes topped with poached duck breast, baby leaves, crushed roasted cashew nuts and yellow onions. The ramen is served with a separate bowl of clear chicken stock soup.

What we love about this dry ramen is that you can really taste each individual component of the dish. The poached duck breast is slow cooked in shoyu sauce for an extended period of time, and is juicy with a tender bite. The cashew nuts and onions provide a nice contrast, bringing some nuttiness and sharpness to the flavours in the bowl.

The clear soup is also light and refreshing – a nice contrast from the stronger flavours in the ramen.

If you prefer your ramen in soup, you will probably prefer the Kamo Paitan Soba ($11).

[caption id="attachment_31222" align="aligncenter" width="4032"] Kamo Paitan Soba[/caption]

This ramen dish features a creamy broth where the flavour of the duck really comes through. A broth that’s not too heavy, it is slow cooked for 5 hours with duck bones and even duck feet, giving it its rich flavour and creamy consistency.

Just like the Kamo Abura Soba, this ramen comes topped with slices of duck breast, baby leaves, cashew nuts, and yellow onions.

While Tsuta is not the only ramen restaurant in Singapore to come up with a duck ramen, we think they’ve nailed it with these delectable new ramen dishes. A dish that celebrates the flavours of duck, this is sure to be a hit with those who love the gamey meat.

These ramen dishes will only be available from 4 November onwards and are exclusively available in Singapore. The next time you’re craving a hearty bowl of ramen, be sure to head down to your nearest Tsuta to eat it!
