If you’ve never been on a train (the MRT doesn’t count), this may be the best way for you to experiment with something easy, instead of an itinerary too complex and arduous. Think of it as baby steps.

Train to Butterworth @ Penang, Malaysia

From Kuala Lumpur, you can buy a train ticket to Butterworth in Malaysia, an idyllic town in Penang. There are two train journeys you can choose, which would take around 6.5 hours to 9 hours respectively. The fare should range from $11 to $28.

You might also wonder: there are so many places to take a train to from Kuala Lumpur, why Butterworth? Well, think of Butterworth as a layover destination, one where you can take a breather and chill out before heading on the next train to… Bangkok!

Train to Bangkok, Thailand

That’s right! Did you know that you could visit Bangkok from Singapore by train?

[caption id="attachment_10148" align="alignnone" width="700"]bkk Image Credit: @yongsn / Instagram[/caption]

From Butterworth, you can take a train ride of almost 20 hours to Bangkok’s Hualumphong Station for around $40 (adult ticket). Out of the three train rides mentioned for this train adventure, this is probably the one you would write home most about.

One of my favourite things about this particular train adventure is how whenever the train pulls up into the station, you’ll be greeted by men and women on the platform hawking hot food and drinks from porridge to a packet of nuts, and if you wanted something, you’d just pay for it over your train window.

[caption id="attachment_10149" align="alignnone" width="700"]Image Credit: @kanya_kaew / Instagram Image Credit: @kanya_kaew / Instagram[/caption]

Bangkok, of course, is almost every Singaporean’s favourite Asian city for nightlife, cheap food and shopping. Don’t forget to stop by weekend markets by Chatuchak and visit the local attractions, from the Grand Palace to the various art and history museums.

For this trip, you will have to buy your tickets in person or through a travel agent. That is because the train is operated by the State Railways of Thailand, and will not be available for reservations on the official KTM website.

Train to Chiang Mai, Thailand

[caption id="attachment_10150" align="alignnone" width="780"]Image Credit: @moona_kim / Instagram Image Credit: @moona_kim / Instagram[/caption]

Located in the North of Thailand, Chiang Mai is great for nature lovers and those who want to escape from the hustle and bustle that is city life. You can visit Chiang Mai via a train from Bangkok; head over to Hua Lumphong Station and get yourself an overnight train ticket to Chiang Mai for around $9 to $40 — prices vary according to the level of comfort you’re willing to part with.

You can also get a sizable Thai dinner on the train itself in another cabin, which will make you feel like you’re in a Wes Anderson movie. Do take note that Bangkok to Chiang Mai trains are seriously popular among locals and tourists, so try to get your tickets well in advance.

Tickets will only be available in person at the counter or through a travel agent.

Train to Hua Hin, Thailand

Only four hours from Bangkok by train, Hua Hin has always been a popular choice for Thais when it comes to quiet family vacations, which means you’ll probably not have to hassle yourself with booze-spilling tourists with bad beach etiquette.

[caption id="attachment_10154" align="alignnone" width="700"]Image Credit: @lukehide / Instagram Image Credit: @lukehide / Instagram[/caption]

Say hello to some good ol’ R&R with the Sun and your buns with this short train ride that won’t cost you much either. Like how you would go to Chiang Mai from Bangkok, head over to Hua Lumphong Station to take a train to Hua Hin, passing by the smaller and EVEN quieter Cha Am. Tickets can cost anywhere upwards of $1.50 or so, going up to $15.

Tickets will only be available in person at the counter or through a travel agent.

Don’t stop there! There are many destinations from Hanoi to Moscow to London you can visit by train if you have the time and money, although they will all require you to switch to a bus journey at some point. Like American author Marianne Wiggins said, “…what thrills me about trains is not their size or their equipment but the fact that they are moving, that they embody a connection between unseen places.” Start planning for a train adventure today!

Kitchen at Bacchanalia – Send Your Taste Buds On An Adventure!

Nestled in the heart of Hong Kong Street, The Kitchen at Bacchanalia isn’t your average fine-dining restaurant. What catches the attention of passers-by is not just the well-decorated interior, but also the stunning open kitchen concept. The cosy 36 seater really makes fine dining a casual yet intriguing affair.

edit IMG_2385

The Kitchen at Bacchanalia is led by head chef Ivan Brehm. This is Brehm’s first restaurant in Singapore. Born in Brazil, he uses his deep culinary knowledge and experience to create many unique and intriguing dishes. His menu is carefully thought and crafted out. All the dishes I’ve tried did not fail to excite the taste buds.

The entire restaurant exudes a relaxed vibe. The low chatter from the guests and the overall calm ambience makes dining at Bacchanalia comfortable and enjoyable. The waiters adopt a smart-casual look as they are all dressed in shirt and jeans. Upon stepping in, the delicious smell of food wafts through the air while the chefs cook.

The best part? Diners get to watch all the action! From the preparation to the cooking and even to the plating of the dishes.

[caption id="attachment_9810" align="alignnone" width="3108"]IMG_2348 Chilled capellini pasta, black garlic mayonnaise, American chilli pepper[/caption]

The capellini pasta was chilled and perfectly al dente. The black garlic mayonnaise and sprinkles of American chilli pepper complemented the pasta and left a sharp and intriguing aftertaste, that wasn’t too overpowering. The black garlic mayonnaise sauce also gave the dish a different texture that wasn’t too soupy or thick.

[caption id="attachment_9821" align="alignnone" width="3318"]IMG_2354 Hamachi “On Toast” – Cured Japanese Hamachi[/caption]

Hamachi is traditionally known as Japanese Yellowtail fish. It is commonly used in sushi or eaten alone as sashimi. It is normally found in the northern part of the pacific ocean and can be eaten either raw or cooked. Chef Ivan’s dish – Hamachi “On Toast” – consists of cured Japanese Hamachi atop rice and a rice cracker. Little bits of pomelo is added to balance out the saltiness and gives the dish a touch of sourness. The rice cracker also gives the dish its special crunch. All these aspects come together perfectly to wow my taste buds.

IMG_2356

Talk about sending taste buds on an adventure – take the popular appetiser dish “Carrot” for example. The plate is filled with… you guessed it! Carrots. The carrots are cooked in different ways; from seared carrots to carrot jams and carrot sponge cakes. Because the carrots are cooked differently, the dish gave me a different perspective of carrots. I never imagined that a carrot could be so sweet and spongy. If I had to eat one kind of vegetable for the rest of my life, I’d choose to eat Chef Ivan’s carrot dish forever!

IMG_2376

Another intriguing dish is the sesame cake that was served for dessert. It is a delicious black sesame almond cake served with pink guava sorbet. The sweetness of the sesame cake is perfectly balanced by the tangy-ness of the guava sorbet. The cake is spongy but it also doesn’t fail to melt in the mouth. Paired with the guava sorbet, the combined flavour of this duo really packs a punch. Overall, it makes for an A-star dessert.

If you’re hungry for food that will satisfy both your taste buds and your tummy, The Kitchen at Bacchanalia is definitely the place to go!

For non-veggie fans, you will be pleased to know that you can opt to switch the veggies for extra noodles at absolutely no charge.

Do, however, expect to wait up to 20mins for a bowl of soupy goodness during lunch hours!

For those craving zi-char or crab dishes, you’d want to check A stall definitely familiar to crab lovers, Melben offers a variety of crab dishes that range from Chilli Crab to its signature Crab Bee Hoon in Claypot ($60). The sweet and savoury milky buttery soup of the Crab Bee Hoon totally had us at the first sip. However, be sure to ration the soup as extra soup comes at an extra charge.

The queue can get expectedly long during dinner time so it’s best to either head down a little earlier or to book a table beforehand.

3. Oppa! Choo Choo

For the K-Pop fanatics, you may have already heard of this Korean fried chicken café.

With six flavours (crispy, spicy, sweet, garlic, soy and honey soy) to choose from, the fried chicken ($16 for 8 pieces) here is juicy and flavourful. The crispy version tastes like the average fried chicken but the honey soy (our personal favourite) is a good mix of sweet and savoury; totally worth every sinful calorie!

Besides fried chicken, Oppa! Choo Choo serves a variety of other Korean food such as rice burgers and bingsus. We highly recommend the rice burger with spicy pork ($6.90).

Their crunchy, tender and juicy cutlets are marinated for whopping 24 hours. Each bite is a step closer to food heaven.

A must-try is the RedRing Signature Chicken Cutlet Noodles ($4.90). Like the cutlet, the noodles are made in-house. Paired with two kinds of sauces, the QQ (chewy) noodles are sweet and savoury at the same time.

5. Hougang 6 Mile Mua Chee

Originally located at Hougang Ave 8, this childhood snack is our favourite of the lot.

Though $3.50 for a box of mixed Mua Chee (sesame and peanuts) may admittedly be a little steep, it is arguably the best Mua Chee in Singapore.

If you are afraid that things may get a little too saccharine for your liking, we recommend getting the Sea Salt Gula Melaka ice cream for that savoury contrast.

Like some of the other eateries mentioned, Creamier is insanely popular, especially during the weekends. You might have to wait up to 40mins. So if you wish to get your waffle fix, be sure to head down early!

An old school comfort food, we’re sure many are familiar with Char Kway Teow. At Toa Payoh Fried Kway Teow, get ready to expect a slightly darker and sweeter version of the dish. The version served at this stall may be closer to Malaysia’s rendition, but we assure you that it is just as delicious.

It may not be a bakery, but Swatow’s egg tarts are hands down, one of the best we’ve had so far. Speaking of Dim Sum, Swatow offers Dim Sum buffets from 3pm to 5pm daily ($19.80++ on weekdays and $22.80++ on weekends). A little tip from us: be sure to get your hands on the egg tarts first as they tend to run out fast!

11. Kim Keat Hokkien Mee

hokkienmee_kimkeathokkienmeefb

Credit: Kim Keat Hokkien Mee Facebook

Unlike the usual Hokkien mee, Kim Keat Hokkien Mee serves theirs in bubbling hot claypots. Claypot has been known to enhance the flavours of dishes, but we’re not too sure if the claypots or some other secret ingredient is responsible for the delicious stock of this dish.

Besides the usual prawn, sotong, and sio bak (fried pork belly), you’ll find clams in this dish, making the broth slightly sweeter than its counterparts.

kimkeatopehleafhkmee_ieatandeat.com

Credit: ieatandeat.com

They do offer the Opeh leaf version ($8) where the Hokkien mee is served on the leaf itself, giving the dish a smoky taste. The broth is not as rich, though. So for those who prefer the slurpy type of Hokkien mee, you may want to stick to the claypot version.

Portions here run a little small so big eaters may wish to consider upsizing their meals (from $10 for 2 pax onwards). The chilli may be a little disappointing for chilli lovers but rest assured that the dish itself is tasty enough.

12. Ocean Curry Fish Head

Credit: jthejon.blogspot.com

Whilst you are here for Kim Keat Hokkien Mee, be sure to also check out The dish may be relatively pricier, but that’s because stall owner Mr Tay uses only the best quality Ang Goli (Gold Band Snapper). We can definitely testify for the freshness of the fish as some of us have had it many times!

curryfishhead_www.sgfoodonfoot.com

Credit: www.sgfoodonfoot.com

The curry here is a mix of Indian and Nyonya curry. The sweetness of the Nyonya curry marries perfectly with the spiciness of the Indian’s. As you dig in, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find chunks of fresh pineapple and ladies’ fingers.

Besides fish head curry, this stall also serves other zi char dishes like Har Lok ($3 per prawn). You choose such dishes ala economical rice stall style – dishes are displayed in circular tin plates behind a glass panel. Again, prices are relatively higher than your usual economic rice stall but we say it’s worth every cent.

Well, the East has practically everything for food! Yes, we East siders do take our food very seriously. Do join us for a gastronomic tour down Tanjong Katong Road as bring you 7 best cheap eats all under $15.

1. Punggol Nasi Lemak

https://www.instagram.com/p/9yVrbLpG5U/?taken-at=1130352

Don’t be fooled by its name. Although this stall is named Punggol Nasi Lemak, it is located along Tanjong Katong Road. Though it is priced slightly highly than your usual plate of Nasi Lemak, you get to choose from a wide array of dishes.

What we recommend – their crispy chicken wings fried to perfection, crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside; and their spicy Otah. Their French Beans fried with dried shrimps is also one of our must haves. For any Nasi Lemak dish, the sambal chilli is the most important condiment and we must say it is on point.

The queue starts as early as 6pm. Fret not, as their staff work quickly and it won’t take too long before it’s your turn (about 15 minutes). Each plate will cost from about $5 to $7 depending on what dishes you pick. Overall, its fried chicken wings and otahs undoubtedly win our hearts.

2. Eng’s Noodles House

Noddle House(image credit: wanton mee. This place has come a long way from the 1950s where it started out from a pushcart at Duku Road to a stall at Dunman Food Center and now a shophouse unit along Tanjong Katong Road.

Their noodles are custom made according to Eng’s specifications. Thicker than the usual wanton noodles, they’re springy and firm. Bottles of hot chilli sauce are also provided at each table. Their wontons, though smaller in size, are seriously addictive. Priced at $4.50 for a small bowl of wanton mee and $5.50 for a large one.

Tip: Order an extra plate of wonton (we prefer the non-fried version), you won’t regret it!

Some of their best sellers include Gula Melaka, Sea Salt Caramel, and Mao Shan Wang. This place also makes really good crispy waffles which are fluffy and soft on the inside.

The cafe is quite small and it is difficult to get a seat on weekends as it is usually crowded. $3.30 for a single scoop, $5.30 for double scoop and approximately $10 for 2 scoops of ice cream and waffles.

Located along the streets of Haji Lane, Selfie Coffee is the most interesting cafe you’ll ever come across. The name says it all. They literally print customers’ selfies onto cups of coffee. How does it work? The first step is to take a selfie (duh). Next, you’ll have to choose a drink, and just like that, your selfie will be printed on the foam of your coffee.

The selfies are printed with 100% edible foam and cream. We recommend ordering a cold drink instead of a hot one, for the picture to last longer on the foam. Print your selfie on a cold cup of Mocha ($8.50) or on a cup of Selfie Coffee’s Signature Coffee ($7.50). Other drinks are also available if you’re not into the idea of sipping a picture of yourself.

When it comes to handmade noodles, the phrase “one of the best” often gets thrown around a lot. But this time, we’re going to make an exception. On the surface, L32 Kopitiam may look ordinary, until you take a glance at the queue at this stall. Such is the power of their Ban Mian, which comes equally slurp worthy, dry or soup.

  1. 126 Dim Sum

Also featured in best 24-7 food places, it’s impossible not to include Wan Dou Sek in this list too. Head down for a no-frills dining experience of value for money dim sum. Nevertheless, be wary of the quality inconsistency of some of their dishes (sometimes good, sometimes bad). At their prime however, this eatery deserves to be on everyone’s list.

  1. Lorong 9 Beef Kway Teow

When you plaster the word “famous” in bold white front at your eatery, you are either arrogant or your food really is damn good. Fortunately, it’s the latter. Arguably one of the best Hor Funs in Singapore, the thick sauce is irresistibly shiok. Although I’ve heard that standards have dropped, it still remains somewhere along the pinnacle.

Astons? Chargrill Bar? Collins Grille? With all of them offering affordable Western delights and much to the chagrin of our tummies, we can only be at one place at one time. Well, when in Geylang, add The Ranch to that list, which is also same same, but different. Their economical set lunches and dinners on menu are to die for.
