6 Things We Only Miss About Singapore When We’re Overseas

Wanderlust is a bittersweet concept. Having spent a good part of our lives in such a tiny island, we Singaporeans constantly have an innate longing to venture out into the vast unknown, tread on uncharted territories and take in all the sights and sounds the great big world has to offer.

We harbour big, big dreams to explore every nook and cranny in the world, one city at a time. We make ever-growing bucket lists and follow Instagram accounts with feeds that only serve to fuel our travel fantasies. But as much as we “can’t wait to escape the heat”, a part of our heart will always belong to our lion city. Here are some aspects of Singapore we only come to miss when we’re not around.

1. Sometimes It’s Good to be Small

[caption id="attachment_8507" align="aligncenter" width="700"]Source: mov Source: Source: Source: changirecommends[/caption]

If you’ve been to countries like Australia, you would know that life crawls to a slow by sunset. Shutters go down by 5 pm and everyone is back home for dinner come nightfall. While this laid back way of life may be a relaxing respite from our hectic lifestyle, sometimes we can’t help but crave a prata and teh tarik combo from a 24-hour coffee shop, or hit the clubs for a night of TGIF partying.

4. The Grass is Honestly Greener on Our Side

[caption id="attachment_8510" align="aligncenter" width="700"]Source: wngwndy Source: wngwndy[/caption]

Outsiders mock us relentlessly for being a fine city, and we’ve heard about our chewing gum law from foreign friends about a thousand times. But because these laws are in place, what we have is a relatively spotless cityscape and most importantly, public toilets that are actually clean. We may not be at Japan’s level, but we’re not too shabby ourselves either. Ask any tourist what they like about Singapore and they will, apart from our impeccable food, gush about how clean our public spaces are. We’ve got an army of cleaners, dustbins at every corner and NEA officers patrolling the streets to catch litterbugs.

5. Public Transport

[caption id="attachment_8511" align="alignnone" width="700"]Source: expatliving Source: Source: foodie paradise we call home. Being a multi-racial nation comes with perks – a vibrant foodscape with cuisines from all over the world. Ask anyone who has lived abroad for a substantial period of time and chances are they won’t say they miss food from Michelin star restaurants or the cafés in Tiong Bahru. Singlish echoes of “Katong laksa!” or “prawn mee!” will reverberate loud and clear. There’s nowhere else in the world you can get a satisfying plate of Hainanese chicken rice with a bomb-ass chili paste for just $3 – cheap and good hawker food is something we take pride in.

There are about a hundred and one complaints we can easily list about Singapore. From our inferno-like weather to our absurd COE prices to our exponentially growing population, right down to the treacherous waiting time at polyclinics. But at the end of the day, there are still certain overlooked aspects about Singapore to be grateful for.

8 Romantic But Affordable Wedding Venues In Singapore Under $10k

It’s June and that means the wedding season is upon us! We have often heard laments that Singapore is a very expensive place to get married, but is that true? We’ve embarked on this journey to discover the supposedly few romantic but affordable wedding venues that are slightly easier on the pocket. Not everyone wants or can fork out the usual hotel venues where one table could cost (gasp) $1888 – what Resorts World Sentosa charges for a weekday lunch.

Here are five offbeat venue suggestions that would not cost you an arm and leg. They’re even romantic and beautiful, to boot! With this, you and your partner can focus on building your nest egg instead.

1. Spruce Ristorante at Phoenix Park

[caption id="attachment_8188" align="alignnone" width="1024"]spruce_wedever ©wedever.co[/caption]

For those of you looking for an intimate venue nestled within lush greenery, look no further! This open air rustic restaurant features a courtyard which accommodates up to 70 people and it is perfect for solemnization ceremonies.

They serve unpretentious American food here, which is available in both buffet and sit down styles, and you can savour that moment with your other half whilst enjoying the treetop view and the sound of chirping birds and insects nearby.

[caption id="attachment_8662" align="aligncenter" width="900"]Credit: wedever.co Credit: wedever.co[/caption]

Another plus is the restaurant is sheltered, and only the deck is alfresco. If it happens to rain, you have a backup plan.

Spruce Ristorante at Phoenix Park

Indoor dining room or the alfresco dining area require a minimum spend of $5k. The former hosts up to 68pax and the latter accommodates up to 110pax. A minimum spend of $10k is required to book the whole restaurant.

Some yachts have their own barbeque pits onboard. You could also arrange for catering (at your own cost). Space is quite limited since most yachts only allow up to 30 people onboard. You could also fork out more to rent the luxurious Royal Albatross which can host up to 149 guests.

[caption id="attachment_7331" align="alignnone" width="1024"]yachtwedding © idealweddings.sg[/caption]

The yachts are available for rent at four hours and you can extend the hours afterwards for around $350 per hour, depending on the vendor. Weekdays are usually cheaper but

6. Kombi Rocks

[caption id="attachment_8671" align="alignnone" width="1024"]kombirocks © Kombi Rocks[/caption]

Ever imagined yourself in a classic Beetle, feeding your fiance some ice cream whilst chilling in the backseat? How about enjoying the view of the lalang fields or riding the old school white scooter with your bae?

Well, Kombi Rocks has got your back! This retro venue with its iconic fleet of Beetles and Kombis would surely give hipster couples that 50’s vibe they love.

[caption id="attachment_8673" align="alignnone" width="1024"]kombirocksinterior_smartlocal © thesmartlocal.com[/caption]

The rustic charm does not end here as the whole diner is decorated as such with light brown tiled flooring. This certainly reminds us of gran’s house! Instead of the usual western cuisine you would expect (from such hipster cafes or diners), Kombi Rocks, fomerly known as Koon Kee Restaurant, offers Teochew-Thai fusion.

If you want a unique old school or shop house venue that offers Asian comfort food like Mee Goreng or Otah, we think you might like this place.

wheelersyard_wheelersyard © Wheeler’s Yard[/caption]

We’re sure everyone has heard of Wheeler’s Yard. Unlike most hipster haunts, this place is huge, as it used to be a warehouse before it was converted to a cafe cum bicycle atelier.

[caption id="attachment_8675" align="alignnone" width="1024"]wheelersyard_fionatreadwell © fionatreadwell.wordpress.com[/caption]

This industrial themed venue will may need some decoration for that romantic feeling. The downside to this place is that only bookings from Tuesdays to Thursdays are allowed.

NOM_nomfacebook1 © NOM Facebook[/caption]

Remember when the slides were made from smooth hard tiles and how everyone, including your childhood sweetheart, took turns sliding down it?

Well you would be pleasantly surprised to learn that NOM has a small replica slide that us 90’s kids used to play with! This brightly lit cafe will probably bring back some good old memories. It also has a heartland feel to it, thanks to the colorful dragon slide in the corner and its location.

[caption id="attachment_8676" align="alignnone" width="960"]nom_nomfacebook © NOM Facebook[/caption]

Not to mention, this spacious Bakery is also known for its customised fondant cakes. Go ahead and hire them to bake your wedding cake as well!

The Bedok Marketplace is a very “atas” hawker center, so there are no surprises here that the food would also get the same pharaonic treatment. Follow the aroma of searing meat to the Burning Oak, a rustic yet modern food joint serving charcoal grilled Yakitori. Mouth-wateringly delicious, you’ll never go back to Tori-Q again.

4. Percolate

Unlike the many many slew of cafes here in our tiny island, Percolate’s menu is friendly. Wallet friendly, that is. Despite food items being relatively cheap, food quality isn’t compromised. An awesome place for a light chill brunch or to grab a quick hot Papa Pahelta!

Good news to the Muslim pancake-loving community, this is a halal pancake restaurant (wow!). Sarah’s is home to fluffy brown pancakes, tasty crepes, and delectable pastas. But what’s so special about this place? Well, cafe owner Alina spices up the menu with local flavours using ingredients such as Gula Melaka, Otah, and Red Bean Paste.

6.To-gather Café

Don’t you just love it when cafes start springing up in our heartlands? As compared to the town area, rental prices are kept much lower at heartlands so cafes are able to charge lower prices (to the delight of foodies). Speaking of low prices, To-gather is a no GST (yes lah!) food joint serving foodgasmic Western delights and artisanal coffee. Hurray to penny pinchers!

7. Refuel Café

The last café in this list, Refuel boasts a casual vibe with plenty of natural sunlight for that perfect Instagram shot. I use ‘affordable’ a lot (hey, who can blame me when it’s true!), so I’ll change my tune by saying that the food menu is value-for-money. For a wholesome and hearty meal, look no further.

Must try: Full Tank ($13.90);

8. Pin Xiang Chicken Rice

It’s hard to miss this one, for this chicken rice stall generates a bustling long queue during lunch and dinner hours. The stall is true to its name (Pin Xiang means fragrant in Mandarin) with both the rice and chicken being extremely well prepared. I would consider this to be one of the best chicken rice stalls in Singapore.

9. Xing Ji Rou Cuo Mian

The highlight of this humble list and one of my favourites of all-time, Xing Ji Bak Chor Mee is like seriously out of this world! The 30-45 minutes wait is well worth it. There’s only a soup version but the soup/broth is rich and immaculate. It outshines the meatballs and noodles by a mile. Tip: order more than 1 bowl.

10. Inspirasi Stall

Inspirasi is a Muslim hawker stall that is well-known with Bedok residents. Here, you can find the legendary Soto Ayam dish, which according to word-of-mouth, is the best in Singapore. Despite winning many awards, prices are still kept low while the food remains scrupulously prepared. Inspirasi is truly inspiring (sorry, I had to).

8 Best Hokkien Mee In Singapore For That Fragrant Seafood Flavour

Ask any Singaporean and it won’t be long before they list Hae Mee, otherwise known as Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles as one of their favourite local dishes. Who could blame them? Fried with eggs, yellow noodles, bee hoon, juicy prawns, squid and pork belly strips before simmered in rich prawn broth, this mouth-watering dish is perfect for any time of the day.

From the dry to the soup(ier) versions, here’s our pick of the 8 best Hokkien Mee you can find in our sunny island!

1. Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Noodles

[caption id="attachment_8118" align="alignnone" width="920"]Ah-Hock-Fried-Hokkien-Noodles-Singapore Image credit: aspirantsg[/caption]

Situated at Chomp Chomp Food Centre, Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Noodles is the place to go for your late night Hokkien Mee fix! Their version of Hokkien Mee is the dry version and they use thin bee hoon instead of the thick ones. What’s different about this dish is that, along with its noodles, bits of prawns and seafood are simmered in pork stock, giving the dish its rich flavour. This stall also uses a combination of cut red chilli and sambal chilli.

Expectedly, Hokkien Mee lovers around the area flock to this stall. There’s a short queue to place your order, and they’ll deliver the Hokkien Mee to you. The waiting time ranges from 15 – 45mins. $3, $4, $5 portions are available.

Address: 20 Kensington Park Road, #01-27, S557269
Opening Hours: 530pm-12am (Closed every other Tue)

2. Geylang Lor 29 Fried Hokkien Mee

[caption id="attachment_8123" align="alignnone" width="640"]geylang-lor-29-fried-hokkien-mee Image credit: Burpple[/caption]

It may be named Geylang Lorong 29 Hokkien Mee, but this stall is actually located at East Coast Road. The reason is simple; the stall is helmed but the same family who owns the stall located in Geylang Lorong 9! A rare sight these days, the stall owner uses a special charcoal fire wok to fry the noodles. This dish is of the soupier type and has a slightly smokey taste to it. Simmered in prawn stock for 7 -8 mins, the owners do their best to serve pipping hot noodles to every customer.

Although the waiting time is slightly longer and each plate may be relatively more expensive ($6), the Hokkien Mee here is flavourful; full of garlicky, eggy goodness; topped with fresh sotong and prawns; and served with deep-fried crispy lard – totally worth the wait! With the generous portion of seafood, we thought the noodles are worth the price and if you ask us, this is definitely one of our top choices for Hokkien Mee.

3. Nam Sing Hokkien Fried Mee

[caption id="attachment_8126" align="alignnone" width="640"]nam sing hokkien mee Image credit: burpple[/caption]

Run by four brothers who used to run their stall at Hougang, Nam Sing Fried Hokkien Mee is now situated at Old Airport Road Food Centre.

The Hokkien Mee here isn’t overly dry and has sufficient moisture that brings out its flavour. With more bee hoon than yellow noodles, we have to say, the owner really knows the way to our hearts. The flavourful savoury prawn stock which requires hours of preparation coupled with the extensive amount of ingredients used, gives the stock its slight tinge of sweetness. For the health conscious, you’ll be glad to know that no lard is used for this stall’s Hokkien Mee.

Priced at $3, expect to wait for approximately 15-30mins for your plate of noodles. Is it worth the wait? Definitely. Do note that this stall closes on random days and they are usually sold out before closing hours, so do call before heading down to avoid disappointment!

4. Singapore Fried Hokkien Mee

[caption id="attachment_8130" align="alignnone" width="612"]singapore fried hokkien mee Image credit: burpple[/caption]

Whenever anyone mentions Whampoa Market, Singapore Fried Hokkien Mee stall is one that immediately comes to mind. It may have perpetually long queues, but this wok hei* Hokkien Mee noodles is well worth the wait. With 3 types of chillies – sambal, red cut, and green cut – take your pick and spice the dish up your way. Non-chilli lovers may want to stay away from the super spicy sambal chilli.

At $4 per plate, their Hokkien Mee will make you instinctively slurp up the noodles in no time.

5. Eng Ho Hokkien Mee

[caption id="attachment_8131" align="alignnone" width="1024"]ah eng hokkien mee Image credit: misstamchiak[/caption]

Do you know that the owners of Ah Eng Hokkien Mee are relatives of the owners of Nam Sing Hokkien Fried Mee and Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Noodles? Now you know why their thin bee hoon seems familiar.

The stock has ingredients such as wild sea prawns instead of the usual tiger prawns. Combined with squid and pork, the overall sweetness of the stock is hardly surprising. Their Hokkien Mee leans to the wetter version with it being neither overly satly nor oily.

Its location may not be easily accessible, but the stall still attracts a huge crowd. With its operating hours from 4pm-12am, Ah Eng is the place to go for your dinner and late night suppers! Price ranges from $3 to $5 per plate.

If you prefer a soupier version of Hokkien Mee, Soon Kee is definitely the place to go to. Prices start from $3 a plate.

8. Tiong Bahru Yi Sheng Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee

[caption id="attachment_8143" align="alignnone" width="640"]tiong bahru yisheng hokkien mee Image credit: burpple[/caption]

Located at ABC Market, Mr Toh is Yi Sheng Hokkien Mee’s second generation hawker. His father started selling Hokkien Mee in a push cart in Tiong Bahru before moving to their current location.

Yi Sheng’s Hokkien Mee is moist with its thick prawn broth and thin bee hoon. The noodles are tender – not too hard or soggy, with its savoury lard flavour. What’s special about their Hokkien Mee is its signature sambal chilli. Robust with a savoury flavour made from anchovies and dried prawns, their addictive homemade chilli is proudly made using a secret recipe.

As this stall is quite well known around Queenstown area, queueing in the heat can get pretty frustrating. But fear not, as Mr Toh encourages his customers to make pre-orders to reduce their waiting time! Each plate is priced at $3/$4/$5.

5 Best Places To Try Famous American-Chinese Dishes In SG

When I first tried American Chinese food in New York last year, I remember standing in front of the ordering counter feeling a little indignant.

I’ve heard a lot about the cuisine, from TV, movies and popular culture, and as someone with more than two decades of experience eating Chinese food, albeit it being more Singaporean or Malaysian Chinese than anything, I thought that the takeout boxes weren’t going to be any good. “It’s fake Chinese food, isn’t it?” I thought to myself. You know, how authentic can it be when the recipes are edited to suit the American palette?

After my first bite, all my preconceived opinions of American-Chinese food were thrown out of the window. Never mind the authenticity. The food was delicious. Every bite left me wanting for more. I had no complaints, only compliments.

Months after returning to Asia, I still crave for American-Chinese food. If you’ve never tried American-Chinese food, here are 5 pretty authentic dishes and places to try them in Singapore.

General Tso’s Chicken

https://www.instagram.com/p/-JIopjpQXa/?taken-at=219825696

Named after Zuo Zongtang, a general in the Qing Dynasty who fought many revolts and wars, General Tso’s Chicken is the poster child of all American-Chinese dishes. But don’t be fooled; the General himself, who came from the Hunan province in China, has never tasted this saucy, broccoli and cubed chicken recipe.

If you are interested, you could even watch The Search for General Tso, a documentary film detailing the origins of this tasty chicken dish, to find out more about how it came to be so popular.

Those who have tried this dish would probably liken it to the sweet and sour meat dishes one can find in most Singaporean eateries, even though General Tso’s Chicken is unique enough to get imported onto the menu in China.

Where to try:

Seletar Hill Restaurant
Address: 16 Jln Selaseh, Singapore 808440
Tel: +65 6483 0348
Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 11.30 AM – 2.30 PM, 5.30 PM – 10 PM

Chop Suey

https://www.instagram.com/p/BDaMuIigUhS/?taken-by=chopsueycafe

Literally meaning ‘a mix of broken pieces’, Chop Suey may not seem like the most appealing dish on the menu. Its origins, shrouded in fog, are not yet determined, but some say that it’s the result of a Chinese guest’s kitchen improvisation after an unsatisfying meal while others maintain that it came from Chinese miners putting together leftovers to make themselves a good meal. It is also rumoured to have originated from coastal city Taishan in China, although we can never be too sure.

But if you’re looking to hit that vegetable quota of yours, look to this colourful, diverse plate for some answers.

Where to try:

Chopsuey Cafe
Address: 10 Dempsey Road #01-23, Singapore 247700
Tel: +65 9224 6611
Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday 11.30 AM – 12 AM, Friday 11.30 AM – 2 AM, Saturday 10.30 AM – 2 AM, Sunday 10.30 AM – 12 AM

Mushu Pork

https://www.instagram.com/p/BCsk3vFF-3k/?tagged=mushupork

Like Chop Suey, Mushu Pork may not look glamorous, but it is still a good mix of stir-fry pork, black fungus, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and zucchini. The Shandong dish has now become a star in America’s Chinese food industry, where it is eaten in the style of a taco or burrito where the pork and vegetables are placed in a pancake with some sauce. Think Peking Duck or Popiah but pork — wrapped and fragrant.

Where to try:

Lokkee
Address: #03-01 Plaza Singapura, 68 Orchard Road, Singapore 238839
Tel: +65 6884 4566
Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 11 AM – 3 PM, 5.30 PM – 10 PM

Crab Rangoon

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFSI9KrHoOX/?tagged=crabrangoon

It’s a little harder to find Crab Rangoons in Singapore – oh, so cripsy! – but you’re in luck. W Singapore at Sentosa Cove’s latest promotion will see to it that you eat all the crabs you want. The hotel’s restaurant, The Kitchen Table, will be serving all things crabby every Saturday from 2 April 2016 to 25 June 2016, so you better hurry. A.R.C. – The Café All Hipsters Dream About

Warm fuzzy lights, quaint ceramic cups and cold brews served in light bulbs, if this isn’t a classic hipster café, we seriously don’t know what is.

[caption id="attachment_7113" align="alignnone" width="1000"]DSC_0075-01 We can totally imagine spending a lazy Sunday here[/caption] [caption id="attachment_7118" align="alignnone" width="1000"] One of the café’s many instagram-worthy corners[/caption] [caption id="attachment_7054" align="alignnone" width="5616"] Award winning barista John Ryan Ting[/caption]

Located at Sultan gate, A.R.C. is an Academy, Roastery, and of course, a Café. Helmed by award(s) winning John Ryan Ting, who is also the first Singaporean barista to reach the semi-finals of the World Barista Championship, you can be assured of the coffee quality served at this quaint café. Did we also mention that Andrea Tan, the Champion of Singapore National Brewers Cup 2015 is also making coffee at A.R.C.? Excuse us whilst we scream a little.

[caption id="attachment_7055" align="alignnone" width="1334"]Top: Cold BrewBottom: 1 + 1 Top: Cold Brew
Bottom: 1 + 1[/caption]

So after that entire introduction, it’s only right to say that we started off with A.R.C.’s signature beverage, the Cold Brew, and 1 + 1. Comprising of Kenyan beans that are immersed in water overnight, the Cold Brew ($8-$12) makes a refreshing drink that is best enjoyed over ice. Despite its acidity, the Cold Brew isn’t overly sour and is pleasantly fruity. The drink is also served in an aesthetically pleasing glass light bulb that you can bring home as souvenir.

The 1 + 1 ($7) is a little more interesting. In A.R.C.’s attempt to allow patrons to enjoy their coffee as both black and white, the concept behind 1 + 1 comprises of a single espresso shot (black) and a milk-based espresso (white). For its price, this mini coffee platter is definitely a steal.

[caption id="attachment_7056" align="alignnone" width="999"]Salmon Tartare Salmon Tartare[/caption]

Despite having visited the café thrice (it’s that good), you’ll be surprised to learn that we have barely sampled half its food items. Talk about having an extensive menu.

Starting off with the Salmon Tartare ($14.80), we were pleasantly surprised by the pink peppercorns that would burst with flavour whenever we bit into them. If you’re not exactly a fan of salmon, worry not. We had a non-salmon lover taste the dish and the plate ended up sparkly clean. We kid you not.

[caption id="attachment_7057" align="alignnone" width="999"]Tender Beef Cheeks Tender Beef Cheeks[/caption]

For the mains, we found the Tender Beef Cheeks ($18.80) very aptly named. Absolutely tender and succulent, this hearty dish is definitely one for the beef lovers. It may be strange to pay this much attention to a side dish, but we have to say that the accompanying Mashed Potato was de-li-cious. Thank god the chef that it’s also available as a side dish.

[caption id="attachment_7059" align="alignnone" width="999"] The Cod Fish[/caption]

The Cod Fish ($31.80) however, is easily the star of the show. This melt-in-your-mouth-pan-seared Cod Fish is a must-have. We repeat; a must-have. Appropriately seasoned and tender soft, this lip-smacking dish will do more than make up for its relatively higher price tag.

[caption id="attachment_7116" align="alignnone" width="1000"]Can a Tiramisu get any more adorable? Can a Tiramisu get any more adorable?[/caption]

If you’re into creative desserts, you’ve come to the right place. When we first laid our eyes on A.R.C.’s Flower Pot Tiramisu ($6.80), we couldn’t believe how adorable it is. Seriously, just look at it. The flavour of this dessert is appropriately strong without being overpowering at the same time. Made with the café’s house blend, this tiramisu may be no hero but it is definitely something to shout about.

[caption id="attachment_7200" align="alignnone" width="729"]Image Credit: @the_royal_son Image Credit: @the_royal_son[/caption]

The Espresso Waffle with Tahitian Vanilla Ice-Cream ($11.80) is a delight. Similarly, this dessert is infused with the café’s house blend, giving it its unique coffee aroma. The waffle is really crispy on the outside and is not as dense so no worries about feeling gelat when tucking into this delicious dessert!
