21Moonstone Lets You Revisit Your Youth With Arcade Games, Cheap Booze, And Old School Snacks

Singapore has seen its fair share of bars situated in odd locations, from Smoke & Mirrors, the rooftop bar at the National Gallery Singapore, to The Library, which is hidden behind a bookcase.

Enter 21Moonstone, a bar located on the 9th floor of an old office building.

Situated on the 9th floor of Poh Leng Building at 21 Moonstone Lane (hence the name), this space is a creative co-working studio by day and a beer house by night – at least on Fridays and Saturdays.

A drastic change of pace from the trendy bars and swanky watering holes of Singapore, this bar is laidback and arty.

[caption id="attachment_30565" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Image Credit: 21Moonstone[/caption]

Think: exposed ceilings, mismatched lights, furniture, floorboards, art scattered around the space, and a giant traditional Chinese signboard!

Did you know most of the resources here are crowdsourced or donated by users of the space?

[caption id="attachment_30569" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @jemplify[/caption]

If you need some air, there is also outdoor seating (and standing) for you and your friends to make yourselves at home.

[caption id="attachment_30570" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Image Credit: 21Moonstone[/caption]

Great Minds Think Alike

21Moonstone was the brainchild of 4 friends who realised that they needed a communal space not just to work at but to hang out at.

Founded by Yang Er Tan, Jeremy Lim, Vincent Ho, and Narelle Kheng (of The Sam Willows!), each of them brings their own experience and knowledge to the table.

[caption id="attachment_30567" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] L-R: Yang Er Tan, Jeremy Lim, Vincent Ho, Narelle Kheng (Image Credit: @jemplify)[/caption]

Welcoming freelancers, artists, photographers, and other creative minds, their intention is to establish a safe space for exchanging and generating new ideas.

Where Artistry Meets Celebrity

Considering that one of 21Moonstone’s founders is a celebrity in her own right, the place is no stranger to celebrities.

[caption id="attachment_30571" align="aligncenter" width="1080"] Image Credit: @munahbagharib[/caption]

Drop by for some good, cheap alcohol, and who knows? You may even bump into some familiar faces!

21Moonstone is all about creating a casual setting for big groups of friends to chill and unwind. There’s even an old school arcade machine and card games you and your party can help yourselves to!

[caption id="attachment_30568" align="alignnone" width="1080"] Image Credit: @jemplify[/caption] [caption id="attachment_30599" align="aligncenter" width="676"] Image Credit: 21Moonstone[/caption]

21Moonstone’s menu is straightforward, with a trim list of beers, ciders and a secret food menu.

You can’t go wrong with a bottle of Asahi ($8 per bottle) beer. If you’re looking for a change, we hear the Westmalle Trappist Dubbel ($12 per bottle) is founder Jeremy Lim’s personal favourite.

If you get the munchies, the bar offers old school snacks such as Muruku Ikan and Super Ring. Comfort foods such as nachos, seaweed chicken and luncheon meat are also available!

Because most of the food served here are simple finger foods, we recommend you come after dinner. Otherwise, there’s a good Fishhead Steamboat/Tze Char place downstairs called Tian Wai Tian where you can fill your stomachs before you go to 21Moonstone.

A low-key bar that’s big on good vibes, end your week on a good note at 21Moonstone!

There’s A Superhero Themed Cyclothon Happening In Singapore And All Are Welcome

Many Singaporeans will probably have noticed that in the past couple of years, it’s been fun runs galore here on our little red dot.

While each run has had its own unique draw, from loud, pumping music, to cartoon character themes, runs just aren’t for everyone.

Sure, there may be plenty of things to keep you distracted from the fact that you’re running, but the relatively short 5K can still be quite the challenge, especially for those of us who haven’t done any kind of physical activity in a long time.

If running isn’t your cup of tea, there’s another sporting event happening soon – and at this one, you’ll have a couple of wheels to help you out.

The annual OCBC Cycle is back.

[caption id="attachment_30551" align="alignnone" width="1456"] Image Credit: OCBC Cycle[/caption]

Happening from 18 – 19 November, OCBC Cycle is Singapore’s most happening cycling event. An event that brings together cyclists young and old, from the greenest to the most seasoned, everyone is welcome to be a part of this cycling fiesta.

OCBC Cycle 2017 has something for everyone, with 3 riding categories for people who just want to have a good time. The best part? This year’s event will be graced by superheroes.

Ride With Friends

[caption id="attachment_30552" align="alignnone" width="1429"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Ocbc Cycle[/caption]

A Super Hero-themed ride, come dressed in your favourite Marvel or DC heroes and heroines! Better yet, come dressed like famous superhero (or supervillain) duos like Batman and Robin, Professor X and Magneto, or the Joker and Harley Quinn, with your partner or your bestie.

[caption id="attachment_30554" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Image Credit: insing[/caption]

You can even go all out and pimp your ride with superhero elements – just make sure it doesn’t become a hazard when you cycle! Capes can be especially dangerous for cycling superheroes.

The best dressed person with the most fearless getup will get to walk away with a Casio EXILIM EX-FR100 Action Cam (worth $629) that’s perfect for capturing action-packed outings like these.

[caption id="attachment_30555" align="alignnone" width="1080"] Image Credit: Unsplash[/caption]

A scenic route that will take you past some of the most iconic landmarks of Singapore, including the other-worldly Singapore Sports Hub, majestic Supertrees at Gardens By The Bay, and the Marina Bay Sands, make sure to take in all the sights as you cruise through this 23km route.

Ride With Family

Want to spend some quality time with the family?

[caption id="attachment_30556" align="aligncenter" width="855"] Image Credit: OCBC Cycle[/caption]

The Mighty Savers® Kids and Family Ride guarantees a great time for even the youngest of the pack.

[caption id="attachment_30557" align="alignnone" width="1500"] Image Credit: OCBC Cycle[/caption]

Themed ‘Bubbly Fun’, the route comprises zones that will be filled with bubbles by bubble blowing machines. The kids are sure to have a ball with the bubbles, popping them as they cycle!

[caption id="attachment_30558" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Image Credit: Image Credit: OCBC Cycle[/caption]

If you’d like to take it easy and go for a leisurely ride, go for The Corporate Bike Ride. Pick between the 23km The Straits Time Ride and the 42km The Sportive Ride, and take on the city with a group of at least 15 cyclists!

Amp up the team spirit and ditch the event jersey in favour of one of your own company tees. Deck yourselves in your company colours, make post-cyclothon dinner plans, and make a day of it!

After all, the company that plays together, stays together.

[caption id="attachment_30560" align="alignnone" width="1259"] Image Credit: OCBC Cycle[/caption]

Gear Up For OCBC Cycle 2017

Sticking with the cycling theme, the OCBC 2017 participation medal comes in the form of 1/3 of a stylized bicycle gear.

[caption id="attachment_30561" align="aligncenter" width="244"] Image Credit: OCBC Cycle[/caption]

Wear it around your neck like a badge of honour once you’ve finished OCBC Cycle 2017. If you come back for subsequent editions of the OCBC Cycle in 2018 and 2019, you can combine the 3 pieces to form a complete gear!

Don’t have a bike of your own? Don’t worry, you can rent yourself a bike for this event! Some reliable places to get your bikes are T.K.H Leisure, Cycle To The Park, S-Lite Event Support and more. With these bike rental services readily available, finding a bike to ride with should be the least of your worries!

If you know you’re long overdue for some exercise, or just like sweating it out with like-minded people, register for OCBC Cycle 2017 here! And make sure to take your best pals along because everything is better when you do it with a friend!

Ann Siang Hill is chock full of bars and rooftop clubs that come alive at all times of the night, and it’ll take you forever to uncover the hidden gems. Here’s another one for you to add to your list of bars to visit – The Apothecary.

[caption id="attachment_30096" align="alignnone" width="928"] Image Credit: The Apothecary[/caption]

Oxwell and Co. has introduced a secret apothecary (read: bar) somewhere on the third floor of their shophouse, where you have to locate a hidden door to enter the cosy dining room.

The bar, simply called The Apothecary, specializes in elixirs, tonics and potions, with a promise to ‘treat all that ails you’. Side note: just in case you haven’t realized, their potions are age-old remedies of booze.

All sorts of remedy for everyday life problems

[caption id="attachment_30097" align="alignnone" width="930"] Image Credit: The Apothecary[/caption]

Don’t believe us yet? Here’s one to cure that cough virus going around – the Croak And Wheeze Relief. The Glenfiddich 12-year-old whisky is infused with honey sage syrup, orange bitters in a concoction that is sure to soothe any throat irritations.

If you have a headache from staring at a computer screen all day, take the Sailor Painkiller. The tonic uses Sailor Jerry Rum as a base, and has notes of orange, pineapple, cream of coconut, palm sugar and nutmeg. After a couple of shots, you won’t remember your day’s problems anymore.

[caption id="attachment_30099" align="alignnone" width="926"] Image Credit: The Apothcary[/caption]

The Butterfly Corpse Effect is an interesting mix of Hendrick’s, fortified wine, blood orange and pea flower tea for a herbal remedy. It didn’t escape our notice that gin and wine both have health benefits if taken in moderation.

A playground for dinner and drinks

[caption id="attachment_30098" align="alignnone" width="930"] Image Credit: The Apothecary[/caption]

The medieval pharmacy-themed bar is filled with mismatched vintage bobs and ends, transporting you back to the primitive times. It really feels like you’re having a sneaky cocktail, or two, after work in the intimate room big enough for only 12 people.

Other than drinks, there are also bar bites like Salt And Pepper Squid and Crispy Salmon Fingers and Tartare Sauce that you can snack on the road to recovery. Head back down to the dining restaurant on the first floor for more substantial fare.

If you start to feel too claustrophobic after a couple of drinks, just head up a two floors to the rooftop bar that is also part of Oxwell and Co to continue your night with a breath of fresh air.

Are you feeling better yet?

The Incredible Spread At This Seafood Buffet Will Make You Say “Shell We?”

If you’re a fan of seafood, you’ll know that seafood – and especially fresh seafood – is typically quite expensive. Order just a few dishes and you’ll find that you’ll already have racked up quite the bill.

For that reason, we love getting our seafood fix from a buffet. Plus, who doesn’t love a spread of food you can have seconds, thirds, and even fourths of if you like?

Previously, PARKROYAL on Pickering’s Lime Restaurant gave us Lobsterfest, a decadent lobster affair that saw the star shellfish dished up in a spectacular variety of ways, such as in risotto, mac and cheese, laksa, cooked with a truffled hollandaise, and more.

This time, the restaurant is back with a new themed buffet, and it’ll be featuring the best of what lies under the sea.

[caption id="attachment_29986" align="alignnone" width="1612"] Image Credit: PARKROYAL on Pickering[/caption]

It’s latest offering, “What the Shell” is a seafood buffet where you’ll find a wide array of fresh shellfish and crustaceans – cold, cooked, or dished up with an inventive spin. Think succulent scallops, juicy prawns, sweet crabs…

The best part? Some of the dishes you loved (or missed out on!) during Lobsterfest will be making a re-appearance!

What The Shell!?

Happening from 22 September, some of the highlights at this buffet line are Lobster on Ice, Sauteed Vongole with Chardonnay Scallion, Gratinated Escargots with Pesto Sauce and of course, everyone’s favourite Singapore Chilli Crab.

Other must-tries are Lime’s signature Maine Lobster LaksaFlower Crab and Shellfish Claypot Congee, and Steamed Ireland Razor Clam with Garlic.

Straight From The Grill

If you love the smoky, charred flavour of food (particularly seafood) over a barbecue, you’ll want to head on outside to the outdoor barbecue.

[caption id="attachment_29988" align="alignnone" width="1610"] Image Credit: PARKROYAL on Pickering[/caption]

Savour the flavours and aromas of flame-grilled fresh ocean bounty. Feast on Half-Shelled Scallops and Oysters with Bonito Soy Butter and enjoy Drunken Whole Tiger Prawns with Salt served straight from the grill!

Keep your eyes open for the Hourly Chef’s Surprise at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.  Deep-fried Soft Shell Crab with Salted Egg Yolk or Maine Lobster with Jalepeno, Garlic and Butter will make quick appearances at the live station, so grab your portion before they disappear off the shelves. After all, a little bit of kiasu-ness never hurt anyone!

Shots, Shots, Shots

And by shots, we mean those of the Oyster variety.

Only three lucky diners will get to attempt the Oyster Shooter Challenge each day. Down 12 alcohol-infused oyster shooters within three minutes, and you get to enjoy dinner on the house! That, and you’ll also win a spot on Lime Restaurant’s “Shell of Fame” (Hall of fame, get it?).

This challenge will go on for 10 weeks, and the diner who manages to down the highest number of shooters will get to take home a $100 dining voucher.

The buffet will set you back $99++ per adult and $59++ per child. Children below 5 years of age get to dine for free. To make a reservation at this buffet, drop them a call at  6809 8899.

If you’ve got a special occasion coming up – a birthday, an anniversary – or you just want to pamper someone you love, spoil them with this gourmet spread! Featuring a stunning variety of the freshest catch prepared in a host of different ways, eat to your heart’s content at Lime Restaurant!

Through Sands for Singapore, its corporate social responsibility programme, Marina Bay Sands has raised over S$16 million for the underprivileged in our community.

An annual event which raises funds and awareness for local charities, Sands For Singapore Charity Festival 2017 will be back again this year, taking place from 8 – 10 September.

This Cafe Created A Diner-Themed Dessert Menu, And Our Eyes Are Confused

If you’ve ever wished you could switch out all the food on your dinner plate for something sweeter (basically, dessert for dinner), there’s a cafe in Singapore where you can do just that; that is, seem like you’re having a sensible meal, but in fact be enjoying dessert.

Nestled in Lorong Kilat, this place serves up typical diner-style food – except, the foods here aren’t what they seem.

[caption id="attachment_29341" align="aligncenter" width="890"] Image Credit: Cake Avenue[/caption]

A spot called “Cake Avenue“, its name should be the first clue that you’re not in for a regular meal of burger and fries.

Look closer and you’ll find burger buns that are actually made of cake, soup that’s made of jelly, salsa that’s made of strawberry compote… You have to see it to believe it.

A Diner-themed Dessert Menu

Cake Avenue has released a new diner-themed dessert menu, and if you’re a sweet tooth, you’ll love all 6 new menu offerings they’re plating up.

First up is the classic burger and fries combo – or rather, its dessert twin.

[caption id="attachment_29331" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Image Credit: Cake Avenue[/caption]

Instead of burger buns sandwiching a beef patty, what you’re seeing here is a dark chocolate ice cream “patty” sandwiched by vanilla butter cake “burger buns”. The vibrantly coloured “mustard” is passionfruit purée, and raspberry purée serves as the “ketchup”.

For sides, you get “fries”, which comprise more vanilla cake.

[caption id="attachment_29332" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Image Credit: Cake Avenue[/caption]

Dessert nachos – bad idea or totally genius? Decide for yourself!

This dish of nachos contains flatbread nachos topped with strawberry compote “salsa”, chocolate mousse “refried beans”, julienned peach “cheese” and pistachio ice cream “guacamole”.

[caption id="attachment_29333" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Image Credit: Cake Avenue[/caption]

Now, this is a dish we find quite intriguing.

A simple bowl of Alphabet Soup, scoop into it and you’ll find that beneath the rose jelly “tomato broth” is a lychee mousse with lychee and raspberry. If you’re wondering if the “alphabets” are actually alphabet pasta, think again – the people at Cake Avenue went all out, crafting the alphabets out of sweet milk agar.

More Unicorn Food

If there’s one foodie trend that seems to be powering on, it has to be unicorn food.

[caption id="attachment_29336" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Image Credit: Cake Avenue[/caption]

Pretty to look at and super Instagrammable, Cake Avenue has created a range of unicorn-themed shakes that come complete with ears and a horn!

In pastel hues of yellow, pink, and green, take your pick from mango, strawberry and matcha flavours respectively!

Raring to try these inventive creations? So are we! Unfortunately, these new desserts will only be available from 1 September onwards, so we’ll all have to wait for just a bit before we can get our hands on these adorable treats.

No Holds Bar-ed – 5 Bars That Let You Take On Karaoke, Arcade Games And More

There’s only how many rounds of ‘never have I ever’ and ‘five-ten’ before you start to question how many more shots you have to go before you blackout. Sometimes you just want to drink and have fun, but the only thing you can do is send in endless song requests to the current live band.

We rounded up a couple of our favorite haunts where you and your squad can chill at without ever getting bored. Choose from beer pong, arcade games, giant Jenga, Quiz Night – the list is endless!

1. Hopheads

Hopheads isn’t your typical underground bar. Besides their super Instagrammable interiors and amazing range of craft beers, they’ve loaded up on all sorts of games to ensure that there will be nary a boring moment.

[caption id="attachment_29249" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Every wall is Instagram-worthy (Image Credit: kestonhuang)[/caption]

Besides the usual dart machines, foosball table and pool table, Hopheads offers a huge range of board games like the infamous Cards Against Humanities and huge Jenga. Need to test your hand-to-eye coordination after one too many drinks? There’s even a ping pong table. I don’t know about you, but drunk ping pong is pretty hilarious.

[caption id="attachment_29251" align="aligncenter" width="300"] So many games, too little drinks! (Image Credit: Hopheads)[/caption]

Once you’ve had your fill of fun, replenish your energy with their food offerings. Hopheads has all the usual bar bites like nachos and wings, and heavier dishes like pizzas, pasta and burgers. A must try is their Waffle Burger ($18.90), where the chicken is fried to perfection and comes sandwiched in two waffles and drizzled in maple syrup. The combination of sweet and savoury flavors is just what you need after an intense game of beer pong.

2. Stickies

Stickies is probably known for their insanely cheap happy hour promotions. I mean, their beers, wines and housepours are priced by the hour! Which means if you go at 12 noon, your beer is on the house (but you have to get some food) Their beer towers are also cheaper than most places in Clarke Quay at $55 for a three liter tower.

[caption id="attachment_29256" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Have you ever tried to play Super Mario while drunk?[/caption]

Aside from their ridiculously awesome deals, their entertainment options are pretty comprehensive too. Their darts, board games and pool are all free to play, and gamers will love the Playstation 4. If you love awful jokes, try Joking Hazard, a game where you compete to see who can come up with the worst comic strip. Another favorite is Exploding Kittens, which is a kitten version of the popular Russian Roulette card game.

[caption id="attachment_29254" align="aligncenter" width="300"] For those terribly (awesome) jokers (Image Credit: sanzopeh)[/caption]

Challenge the house to a game of beer pong, and if you win, you don’t have to pay! But if you lose, that’s going to cost you $50 a game.

Stickies has also just opened another outlet at Sunset Hill, so Westies don’t have to travel all the way to the city to have some fun!

Check out what else we have to say about Stickies here.

Club Castle is like a playground, but for the alcoholics. With LED chairs and tables so that you can see what you’re doing in the dark, Club Castle exudes arcade vibes, complete with games and booze.

[caption id="attachment_29257" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Claw machines: the bane of every arcade visitor (Image Credit: Club Castle)[/caption]

Giant poker cards will definitely get a laugh when you’re trying to hide your hand from the person next to you, while a rotating wheel will put a spin on your drinking game. Put your vocals to the test with some karaoke, or play the claw machine to take home a souvenir.
