Rise Of The Rice Bowls – 9 Bowls That Taste As Good As They Look

They say that a square meal is a nourishing and balanced one that contains enough ingredients and nutrients to satisfy the body. But with the rise of restaurants serving a comprehensive rice bowl fit for a king, you’ll soon be agreeing that circular meals are exactly what you need right now.
From the delightfully delicious ingredients to the delicate crockery that house them, rice bowls makes for an easy and wholesome meal that’s easy on the eyes and stomachs. Here’s our list of some of the prettiest rice bowls we could find.
1. MAY MAY
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BCU9cHpwIoy/[/embed]I run the risk of sounding lame but the first thought that came to my mind is ‘this place very chio’. And you’ll see where I’m coming from once you’ve had a meal there. Natural lighting and living wall facade adorns the minimalistic space, and everywhere you turn is an Instagram spot. But the real star is their lunchtime rice bowls. Opt for the Butter Poached Cod ($18), where tender smooth pieces of cod lie in the midst of wakame, oven roasted tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, pickled lotus root, wasabi sprouts, soft centred egg – the result is a kaleidoscope of colours that’s almost too pretty to eat.
MAY MAY
Address: 65 Tras Street
Opening hours: Mon – Sat: 11:30am – 3pm, 6:30pm – 11pm
2. Ninja Bowl
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BD8C_obw6hl/[/embed]Perhaps the reason why the restaurant is named ‘Ninja’, other than its obvious Japanese influence, is the speed at which you’ll find yourself swiftly clearing the contents of your rice bowl. These hearty and affordable rice bowls come loaded with various protein and a slew of healthy greens, making them a great meal option. The Kabuki bowl ($14) is a safe option with seared honey chicken leg, baby corn, pickled beets, an onsen egg and bean sprouts that come together harmoniously in your mouth.
Ninja Bowl
Address: 15 Duxton Road
Opening hours: Mon – Fri: 9:30am – 7:30pm; Sat – Sun: 9am – 6pm
3. Aloha Poké
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/9EL-Nlr5AH/[/embed]The funky name reflects the brand’s ethos – bringing fun and fresh Hawaiian flavours into Singapore. They specialise in poké, which for the uninitiated, is a traditional Hawaiian dish where raw seasoned tuna is tossed with sesame seeds, sweet onion and scallions. Served with fresh salad greens, squeeze the wedge of lime provided to awaken the fresh tropical flavours of this dish. This light meal (from $11.90) makes for a great healthy lunch option for all sashimi lovers out there.
Aloha Poké
Address: 92 Amoy Street
Opening hours: Mon – Sat: 11:30am – 2:30pm, 5:30pm – 11pm
4. Tendon Ginza Itsuki
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BB34RvdvBlk/[/embed]The snaking queue outside this eatery in Tanjong Pagar is testament to the popularity of its tendon – a one-bowl soul food filled with various ingredients deep fried to a delectable golden brown. Step inside and you’ll see most people indulging in their Special Tendon Set ($13.90), where prawns, chicken and vegetables are prepared tempura style. Don’t forget the oozing tempura half-boiled egg that’ll make for a great sauce coating. This might sound like an indulgent bowl of fried food, but you’ll have little regrets once you start eating.
Tendon Ginza Itsuki
Address: 101 Tanjong Pagar Road
Opening hours: Mon – Sun: 11:30am – 2:30pm, 5:30pm – 10pm
5. Grain Traders
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BCotL2MOchA/[/embed]The open interior and open-spaced kitchen makes Grain Traders a welcoming place for a healthy and hearty meal option. Personalise your very own nutritious lunch with their Build-You-Own-Bowl ($16) and choose from the various protein and vegetables that’s freshly prepared in batches. Expect charred furikake corn, seared marinated tuna, apple kimchi and other mouth-watering selections. The only thing you’ll need to worry about is holding up the queue when attempting to choose from their extensive variety.
Grain Traders

Opening hours: Mon – Fri: 8am – 8pm
6. Nosh
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BFoiqqvQkMj/[/embed]I’m thinking that the restaurant aims to provide nourishing food in a posh setting judging from the earthy wooden furnishing and wholesome menu. Don’t be too quick to dismiss the Yakitori Salmon ($24) as yet another Japanese fare. Nosh brings the usual Japanese flavour up a notch with their thick chunk of salmon resting on a bed of sweet coconut rice and topped with vietnamese caramel, creating a salty-sweet dish that’s unlike any brunch item you’ve had before.
Nosh
Address: 9 Rochester Park
Opening hours: Tue – Fri: 11:30m – 10:30pm; Sat – Sun: 10:am – 10:30pm
7. Superbowl
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BETCWnuuUhm/[/embed]Inspired by donburis, Superbowl is a concept eatery specialising in rice bowls that are outstandingly fresh and delicious. Their Super Fish Bowl ($20) is the ultimate dish for sashimi lovers, where a selection of salmon, tuna, swordfish and scallop sashimi sits comfortably above a bed of short-grain rice and crowned with a spoonful of fish roe.
Superbowl
Address: 8 Circular Road
Opening hours: Mon – Fri: 11:30am – 3pm
8. The Refinery
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BFQEIjNMJTQ/[/embed]The minimalist industrial interior of The Refinery plays host to a restaurant/ bar and a co-working space upstairs. I don’t know about you but if I have a restaurant that serves this Gyuniku Donburi ($15) right below my workspace, I’ll have to resist having it for lunch every other day. With fragrant truffled shimeiji mushrooms, shredded tare marinated beef and a runny onsen egg, this rice bowl that’s punctuated with scallions is a well thought-out dish that’ll have you coming back for seconds.
The Refinery

9. Tanuki Raw
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/_QT8w8nWLG/[/embed]Our last restaurant is a heavyweight when it comes to the rice bowl scene in Singapore. Touted as one of Singapore’s best lunch bowls, Tanuki Raw dishes out affordable meals as well as alcoholic drinks. Order the crowd favourite – Truffle Yakiniku ($18) – which features slices of US angus beef short ribs pan seared to perfection and drizzled with truffle soy sauce that’ll make a great accompaniment to the mixed rice.
Tanuki Raw
Address: 181 Orchard Road

With these photogenic rice bowl options, you’ll have to remember to put down your phone and actually get to eating the meal before it turns cold. Boasting the complete package of both looks and taste, you’ll soon find yourself falling head-over-heels for these rice bowls.

5 Best Places To Try Famous American-Chinese Dishes In SG

When I first tried American Chinese food in New York last year, I remember standing in front of the ordering counter feeling a little indignant.
I’ve heard a lot about the cuisine, from TV, movies and popular culture, and as someone with more than two decades of experience eating Chinese food, albeit it being more Singaporean or Malaysian Chinese than anything, I thought that the takeout boxes weren’t going to be any good. “It’s fake Chinese food, isn’t it?” I thought to myself. You know, how authentic can it be when the recipes are edited to suit the American palette?
After my first bite, all my preconceived opinions of American-Chinese food were thrown out of the window. Never mind the authenticity. The food was delicious. Every bite left me wanting for more. I had no complaints, only compliments.
Months after returning to Asia, I still crave for American-Chinese food. If you’ve never tried American-Chinese food, here are 5 pretty authentic dishes and places to try them in Singapore.
General Tso’s Chicken
https://www.instagram.com/p/-JIopjpQXa/?taken-at=219825696
Named after Zuo Zongtang, a general in the Qing Dynasty who fought many revolts and wars, General Tso’s Chicken is the poster child of all American-Chinese dishes. But don’t be fooled; the General himself, who came from the Hunan province in China, has never tasted this saucy, broccoli and cubed chicken recipe.
If you are interested, you could even watch The Search for General Tso, a documentary film detailing the origins of this tasty chicken dish, to find out more about how it came to be so popular.
Those who have tried this dish would probably liken it to the sweet and sour meat dishes one can find in most Singaporean eateries, even though General Tso’s Chicken is unique enough to get imported onto the menu in China.
Where to try:
Seletar Hill Restaurant
Address: 16 Jln Selaseh, Singapore 808440
Tel: +65 6483 0348
Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 11.30 AM – 2.30 PM, 5.30 PM – 10 PM
Chop Suey
https://www.instagram.com/p/BDaMuIigUhS/?taken-by=chopsueycafe
Literally meaning ‘a mix of broken pieces’, Chop Suey may not seem like the most appealing dish on the menu. Its origins, shrouded in fog, are not yet determined, but some say that it’s the result of a Chinese guest’s kitchen improvisation after an unsatisfying meal while others maintain that it came from Chinese miners putting together leftovers to make themselves a good meal. It is also rumoured to have originated from coastal city Taishan in China, although we can never be too sure.
But if you’re looking to hit that vegetable quota of yours, look to this colourful, diverse plate for some answers.
Where to try:
Chopsuey Cafe
Address: 10 Dempsey Road #01-23, Singapore 247700
Tel: +65 9224 6611
Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday 11.30 AM – 12 AM, Friday 11.30 AM – 2 AM, Saturday 10.30 AM – 2 AM, Sunday 10.30 AM – 12 AM
Mushu Pork
https://www.instagram.com/p/BCsk3vFF-3k/?tagged=mushupork
Like Chop Suey, Mushu Pork may not look glamorous, but it is still a good mix of stir-fry pork, black fungus, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and zucchini. The Shandong dish has now become a star in America’s Chinese food industry, where it is eaten in the style of a taco or burrito where the pork and vegetables are placed in a pancake with some sauce. Think Peking Duck or Popiah but pork — wrapped and fragrant.
Where to try:
Lokkee
Address: #03-01 Plaza Singapura, 68 Orchard Road, Singapore 238839
Tel: +65 6884 4566
Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 11 AM – 3 PM, 5.30 PM – 10 PM
Crab Rangoon
https://www.instagram.com/p/BFSI9KrHoOX/?tagged=crabrangoon
It’s a little harder to find Crab Rangoons in Singapore – oh, so cripsy! – but you’re in luck. W Singapore at Sentosa Cove’s latest promotion will see to it that you eat all the crabs you want. The hotel’s restaurant, The Kitchen Table, will be serving all things crabby every Saturday from 2 April 2016 to 25 June 2016, so you better hurry. More information

At Old Bukit Purmei, the braised sauce and pork ribs are so savoury that they make your taste buds dance. The Lor Mee ($3-$4.50) here is so delicious it converted one of our acquaintances to a die hard fan. Believe it or not, he had his lunch at Old Bukit Purmei for a whole week.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BBEIkLDSFYv/?tagged=oldbukitpurmeilormee
He eventually stopped frequenting the stall — not because he grew tired of eating the same food but because of the insanely long queue. This is how epic the Lor Mee is.

Instead of the pork belly most Lor Mee lovers are accustomed to, the stall serves tender braised duck meat Lor Mee ($3), giving this dish a unique twist.

6. Zhi Xiang Special
See those little crispy things on top of the noodles and gravy? Those are fried yam. Talk about a unique and memorable take! Unfortunately, the Lor Mee portion served at this stall is rather small ($3) so don’t be surprised if you’re still hungry after devouring it.
Piping hot with an appetising flavour, a meal here commands attention and is the ultimate choice for a kickass breakfast meal. To avoid the crowds, we recommend coming here around 10am on a Sunday morning.
https://www.instagram.com/p/7E3ChxTaXT/?tagged=zhixiangspeciallormee
Zhi Xiang Special Lor Mee
Address: #01-49 Block 93 Lorong 4, Toa Payoh Market & Food Centre
7. Hai Tang
Despite patronising Hai Tang at 10 am on a Monday morning, we still spent 30 minutes in line for a bowl of their Lor Mee. Can you just imagine what the crowd is like during peak hours?
https://www.instagram.com/p/0hFgDmOSHY/?tagged=haitanglormee
For $3, you get a generous amount of noodles, ingredients, (braised meat, eggs, mushrooms) and fragrant gravy. Hai Tang’s Lor Mee is — to borrow a quote from Rob Thomas — warm like a sweater. It also tastes like home.
Sure, the service is on the slow side, but with its price, size, and quality, we’re definitely not complaining.
Address: Mei Ling Market & Food Centre, 159 Mei Ling Street #02-14
Opening hours: Daily 8am-2pm
Which stall serves the best Lor Mee in your opinion? Old Bukit Purmei? Hai Tang? None of the above? Leave your comments and let us know!

Located along the hip Amoy Street, look for their neon burger sign and find your way in through the back door at Gemmill Lane. Head in and you’ll yourself in a cosy, diner-style space, with scribbles, posters, and graffiti on the walls. Feel free to leave your mark there too!

Burger Joint prides itself in offering unpretentious, all-American burgers; the complete opposite of fancy gourmet burgers. Simplicity and taste reign supreme at this burger spot, with the highlight of each paper-wrapped burger being the ingredients- juicy patties, fresh vegetables, and melted cheese.

Hate tomatoes? Like your beef rare? Customise your burger as per the instructions on the wall, add a few squirts of ketchup and mustard, and voila, you can enjoy your burger exactly the way you want it.

And don’t forget to order up some fries and a milkshake or two. Apart from typical milkshake flavours like strawberry and chocolate, you can also opt for alcoholic versions with additional shots of booze like Baileys and Amaretto.

Speaking of booze, Burger Joint has a selection of craft beers on tap as well. Their selection includes Sweden’s Omnipollo, London’s Weird Beard, California’s Heretic, and more. TGIF, anyone?

While this burger spot has gained fame in The Big Apple, online reviews on the newly opened branch in Singapore seems mixed at the moment, so we say it’s best to try Burger Joint out yourself. And if you do, let us know if you liked it!
[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BE-FcVSnsLj/[/embed]For burger fans, this might be your next go-to spot for a good old all-American burger. And with its location along the popular Amoy Street, we’re pretty sure the hipster crowd will be checking this place out too.

Toast Box’s 1933 Restaurant – A Food Blast To The Past

1933? Why not 1954? Or 1965? Or any other year for that matter?
Turns out, this nostalgic restaurant helmed by Toast Box is named after the year the Capitol Theatre was first opened. Located in the middle of Capitol, this 2-storey restaurant is pretty hard to miss.
[caption id="attachment_7229" align="alignnone" width="836"]
With its revamped menu, 1933 now presents a range of Nanyang-inspired dishes that we’re confident will impress both locals and non-locals. We started with the Forest Mushroom ($6.90) and boy were we pleasantly surprised with the crunchiness of the bread bowl. We’re not proud of it, but we ended up ditching our cutleries and went for the bread with our hands instead. #dontjudge
[caption id="attachment_7231" align="alignnone" width="2231"]
The Luncheon Fries ($5.90) are pretty much like your usual SPAM fries but its accompanying sweet chili sauce made all the difference. The Hainanese-style Satay ($8.90/6 sticks) on the other hand, blew us away. Succulent and tender, the bursting smoky flavors of the charcoal-grilled meat hit us like a wrecking ball. In a good way. The only gripe we have however, is the size of the satays. Please sir, can we have some more?
[caption id="attachment_7232" align="alignnone" width="2226"]
Moving on to the mains, the Hainanese Chicken Rice ($12.90) was a delight. Though more expensive than your Kopitiam version, the quality of this dish is worth its price. Served with fragrant rice cooked in chicken broth, a side of bean sprouts, a platter of chicken, a small plate of kang kong, and a bowl of soup, this dish is pretty much a meal by itself.
[caption id="attachment_7233" align="alignnone" width="4212"]
If you’re a fan of spicy dishes and Toast Box’s laksa, the Laksa Pasta ($13.90) is definitely the dish to go for. A local favorite with an Italian twist, the chef did a more than decent job in marrying the two. The taste of laksa is very evident despite the pasta’s dryness but as non-chili enthusiasts, we thought the dish was a tad spicy. So if you’re like us, do keep a drink handy which in our case, was the Berry Bliss ($5.50), a perfect blend of fresh mixed berries, mint and lemonade to douse the laksa fire.
[caption id="attachment_7234" align="alignnone" width="1000"]
To complete our meal, we had the decadent Gula Melaka Pandan Cake ($7.90), a soft pandan chiffon caked baked with bits of palm sugar and served with Gula Melaka syrup.
The prices may not be very 1933, but this revamped menu does offer some pretty good dishes. So if you’re in town and are game to try local food with a unique twist, take a trip to 1933 and who knows, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Hipster Hawkers: 5 Stalls That Are Redefining Hawker Culture

It seems like the growing wave of hipster hawkers might just be the solution to Singapore’s dying local hawker culture. Undeterred by the long operating hours and uncomfortable heat, a bunch of young hawker-preneurs are reinvigorating the local hawker culture. They bring with them a youthful drive and modern sensibilities, resulting in a curious mix of bold new flavours served in a rustic and unassuming environment.
So the next time you find yourself at one of these kopitiams, be prepared to be greeted with more than just your usual hawker fare.
1. The Truly Test Kitchen
Driven by a desire to serve authentic and quality dishes, a group of graduates – Joel Chia, Deniece Tan and Joshua Chia – opened their very own eatery on the seventh floor of an industrial building. Spanning a total of five different stalls, Truly Test Kitchen serves up a diverse range of cuisines from traditional handmade yam cake to the American classic chicken and waffles.
“I want to make my food so good, people will come up seven floors for it,” said Chia in an interview with Makansutra.
And the trio have succeeded in doing that. Everything they serve is prepared painstakingly from scratch every morning.
Not to be missed is their Hainanese curry rice served with an assortment of homely side dishes. The curry sauce is the perfect blanket over their plain rice and crispy pork cutlet. It might be shy on spiciness but the fragrance from the spices used makes it a truly delicious dish.
The Truly Test Kitchen
Address: 153 Kampong Ampat, #07-05
Opening hours: Mon – Sat: 7am – 2pm
Price: From $3
2. Fishball Story
Opening a noodle stall right in the heart of a school campus, it is rather evident that the owner of Fishball Story, Douglas Ng, 25, is dedicated to keeping the hawker culture alive. Located in the National University of Singapore, Ng started selling fishball noodles since he was 22.
Dedicated to providing a traditional and authentic dish that is true to its roots, the fishballs that the stall serve are blended and made by hand. Right down to the sambal used, this $3 per bowl of fishball noodles is as genuine as it can get.
Ng said in an interview with Toggle: “We use 100% fish meat. To me, authentic fishballs taste like this. I just want to serve what I feel is authentic and traditional.”
Fishball Story
Address: 2 College Avenue West, #02-01
Opening hours: Mon – Sun: 8:30am – 8pm
Price: From $3
3. Hambaobao
Aptly named, this humble stall in Beauty World Center serves up hamburgers with an Asian twist. They might have a modest menu, but the flavours are certainly something to brag about.
Some of their must-try include the Crispy Pork Belly burger ($5) and the Ayam Buah Keluak ($5), which is their take on the quintessential Peranakan dish with buns sandwiching a buah keluak infused chicken patty and topped with chap chye and homemade chilli.
The young owners, Ryan Wee, 26 and Claire Ng, 23, attributed the reason for opening a food court style eatery to lesser overhead costs. They can thus focus on providing unique east-meets-west flavours at affordable prices. So skip the usual fast-food chain and try Hambaobao the next time you have a burger craving.
Hambaobao
Address: 144 Upper Bukit Timah Road, #04-49
Opening hours: Wed- Sun: 12pm – 8pm

4. Ballistic Meatballs

You’ll be surprised at the variation of meatballs served at Ballistic Meatballs, a stall located in The Bedok Marketplace. With an extensive menu that serves up everything related to meatballs and more, it feels almost like a cafe packed into a humble stall.
The owner, 30 year old Ryan Chuang, is certainly giving the meatballs from IKEA a run for their money.
Their crispy Signature Ballistic Meatballs ($5.90) come with a cheesy center with a side of highly addictive furikake mayonnaise. This sesame-battered creation literally blends a world of flavours together in one meatball.
Also addictive is their Crispy Crab Balls ($10.50) that feels like a deconstructed chilli crab and their Plain Jane meatballs that’s used to go with everything from pasta, sliders, sandwiches to even wraps.
Ballistic Meatballs
Address: 348 Bedok Road, #02-02/03
Opening hours: Monday – Sunday, 11:30am – 10pm
Price: From $4
5. Lad & Dad
While it might be hard to find restaurants that serve up traditional British stews with fluffy yorkshire pudding, it certainly is easy to find a hawker stall that serves just that. Helmed by a father and son duo, Lad & Dad, brings you new kind of comfort food in a kopitiam setting.
Located in Serangoon Gardens, Keith Koh, 26, dishes out warm and hearty stews choked full with tender meat and root vegetables after picking up his culinary skills from London. His father, Desmond Koh, 57, helps out with the preparation and operation of the stall. As a side dish, the yorkshire pudding serves as the perfect canvas to soak up all the luscious broth, or have it as a sweet dessert served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Lad & Dad
Address: 49A Serangoon Garden Way, #32
Opening hours: Wednesday – Sunday, 12pm – 8pm
Price: From $3
It certainly is heartening to see the younger generation innovating and keeping our local hawker culture alive. Do give them a try the next time you plan to head out with your friends.

Hello Kitty vs Pompompurin – Here’s The Low-down On Both Cafes!

With the recent launch of the Hello Kitty and Pompompurin Cafe, and the upcoming launch of the Pokemon Café later this month (limited time period), character-themed cafes here seem to be facing fierce competition. With so many choices, and so little time, which cafe should you visit? Without further ado, we analyse and compare both cafes, so you can prioritise which to visit!
Pompompurin Cafe
[caption id="attachment_7159" align="alignnone" width="640"]

Fans of Sanrio would probably have heard of this café which opened a few weeks back. Like what its name implies, the Pompompurin café’s décor and food are designed after the yellow canine – from the pancakes to the caramel pudding down to the seats and placemats.
Aside from the limited edition Pompompurin merchandise, selected dishes like the signature Bagel’s Special: Pancake Tower ($21.99, pictured bottom right) comes with a Pompompurin mug which you can take home!
[caption id="attachment_7165" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Credit:
Hello Kitty fans rejoice! Now, there is no need to fly overseas to get your Hello Kitty fix because you have a Hello Kitty cafe at your doorstep. And it’s open 24 hours to boot!
Hello Kitty merchandise are displayed and available for purchase. There’s also a limited edition Hello Kitty plushie, which is the first worldwide to feature a double bow, up for grabs (500 pieces only at $49.90 each). Custom Hello Kitty-inspired tea blends ($38.90), and grow-it-yourself plant kits ($34.50) are sold along with other Hello Kitty merchandise.
Since this café is under Europar Specialty Restaurants (S) Pte Ltd, which is under the subsidiary of ABR Holdings Limited who owns Swensen’s, the gelatos ($6 per scoop) and soft serves ($4.90) are a must try. They are my personal favourites out of the whole menu!
This Garden-themed Sanrio café is open around the clock (the first in the world) so night owls now have a new hang out spot!
Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Cafe
Price range: About $15 to $24 per main dish
Location: Arrival Hall Central #01-22, Terminal 3, Singapore Changi Airport
Opening hours: Open 24 hours daily
Maximum seating capacity: 84 pax
Advantages: open 24 hours, quality food (as compared to kawaii food), adult-oriented, merchandise available for purchase, beautiful orchids and plants displayed to keep to Orchid Garden theme, subtle Hello Kitty decor and interior
Verdict: Having analysed and been to both cafes, we’ll have to say that each has its own pros and cons. Pompompurin Cafe is certainly very family friendly and great for kids. Their adorable food will coax and please even the fussiest child to eat. On the other hand, Hello Kitty’s decor and menu is more suited to adults, and their location at Changi Airport makes it convenient to stop for a visit and a bite. Conclusion? It’s a draw!
