Running Low On Battery? Charge Your Phone For Free At 200+ Places In S’pore!

Have you just seen a low battery notification on your phone? Didn’t bring your portable charger?

Fret not! Here, we present a list of places in town and the CBD for you to charge your phone for free.

Gift of Power

On SG50, Singapore Power granted all dying phones a lifeline.

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-4-05-26-pm

There are close to 200 power charging stations all over Singapore islandwide!

Best of all, it costs nothing to charge your mobile devices.

screen-shot-2016-11-18-at-4-07-49-pm
These 200 stations are located mostly in tertiary institutes, hospitals and public libraries.

If you’re in town, some of the charging stations include:

Somerset – Library @ Orchard
Bugis – National Library
Marina Bay Sands – Gardens by the Bay
Chinatown – Library @ Chinatown.

For the full list of charging stations, Credit:

Some also provide the specific cable for your device, so you don’t need to worry if you did not bring your cable.

Borrow a portable charger and charge your phone for free at these shopping centres in town

Ion Orchard: Head to the concierge or the information counter. Fill up a form to borrow a power bank from them. Cables for various phone models are available upon request.

313@Somerset: Power banks are available at the information counter for members of Club 313 only.

Orchard Central: Head over to the concierge, produce your NRIC, and fill in a form. You can use their power banks as you shop. Remember to return the power banks by 9.45pm. Cables for Iphone and Android are available.

Raffles City: Pick up a portable charger at the information counter or concierge. A deposit of $30 is required and the chargers are to be returned by 10pm. Cables for iPhone and Samsung phones are available.

Suntec City: Fill up a form at the information counter. Just remember to return the portable charger before 9pm. Cables for iPhone 6 and Samsung phones are available.

Millenia Walk: Power Banks are provided at the information counter. Leave your ID and return the power bank before 7pm. Cables are available for iPhone 6 and Samsung phones.

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands: Head to the concierge and pick up the portable charger. All you need to show is a Photo ID and a deposit will be placed on your credit card. Do remember that the use of these portable chargers are limited to the Marina Bay Sands area (hotel and shoppes).

Go forth and charge

And there you have it, a list of places where you can go to, to charge your dying device.

With the increased use of mobile devices, perhaps more malls should offer such charging services. That would definitely bring a smile to all shoppers, especially us, social media dwellers.

Share this with your friends and family, so they’ll never borrow your portable charger, or be unreachable because their phones have run out of batt.

Nestled in acclaimed nail salon, esBoudoir, in Vivo City, customers can watch their perfect nail colour being mixed by hand.

Despite being tailor-made to cater to your wildest whims, a 5-ml bottle of your desired colour only costs $11, while a 10-ml bottle goes for $16.

From 17 October 2016 to 31 December 2016, feel free to bring in discontinued lacquer and a picture or an item of colour you wish to bottle. Within 10 minutes, Lacquer Bar will have that colour blended and packaged like a genie in a bottle.

If you have no colour in mind, the colourist will most gladly assist you.

Our Experience at the Lacquer Bar

We popped by, and were blown away by the warmth of the colourist in session and the staffs’ level of professionalism.

For the first time in our lives, we felt as though we were peeking behind a magician’s curtain.

Except, instead of pulling rabbits out of hats, we were creating concoctions that went onto our nails.

[video width="960" height="540" m4v="https://discoversg.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/large.m4v"][/video]

At the lacquer bar, we had an impromptu flash of inspiration from a pair of beloved faded denim shorts.

During our one-on-one consultation with the colourist, we asked for the nail polish colour to resemble “old jeans”, an all-time comfort wear close to our hearts.

We pointed at a sky blue pamphlet close by for reference, and requested for the colourist to “add a bit of grey into that blue”.

The Science of Beauty

Now, here’s where some technical jargon comes in.

The colourist used a device, called a spectrometer, to analyse the colour of the pamphlet and pick out the exact shade of blue on it. After that, the spectrometer used an in-house algorithm to convert the digital colour to a formula. How cool is that?

From there, the colourist used chemistry laboratory equipment to blend the colours by hand.

img_6609-min

After the colours were blended, we were given small samples to test on our nails, under white and warm lights respectively.

We thought that this was especially thoughtful of them!

This countered one of our greatest worries as discerning nail polish buyers.

Our major pet peeve when buying a nail polish, is when it turns out looking like a new colour under a different lighting from the one we tried it under. Say, when it looks like a lovely violet indoors but ends up like a Barney purple outdoors.

Once the colourist had finished making adjustments to the hue, he bottled up the lovely shade for us.

FYI, never be afraid of commenting on the colour, because the Lacquer Bar accurately tailors your polish according to all the information you tell the colourist.

packaged-nail-deck

We even got to name our newly-created colour! We called it “Ripped Jeans” because we’ll always be rebels at heart.

Our ambassador, Diana, also visited the Lacquer Bar! Here’s what she had to say:

Modus Operandi

Lacquer Bar keeps a record of every colour made by any customer, so you can always go back to purchase a colour you previously created.

img_6602-min

To shake things up, the Lacquer Bar comes up with new colours every month. This November, their signature colour is a sumptuous dark plum, heralding the start of the winter season.

According to the colourist, Tiffany Blue and nude hues are the most popular nail polish shades created at the Lacquer Bar. Just so you know, this is where you can lay your hands (and nails) on them!

What is in the Works

Though crème is the only finish available at the moment, other finishes such as shimmer and glitter will be unleashed very soon.

Currently, the Lacquer Bar has an internal catalogue and a database of every colour they’ve ever made. Yes, yours and ours too.

We’re over the moon to know that they’re working on a catalogue for customers to choose colours and derive inspiration from.

Last but not least, Lacquer Bar’s upcoming Collaboration Collection will see them cooperating with local businesses and iconic personalities, so stay tuned!

10 Labels You Need To Know From Singapore Fashion Week 2016

The orgy of high fashion hit all the right notes this year at Singapore Fashion Week 2016. Held at the National Gallery, this year’s style extravaganza topped last year’s venue at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.

During the 5-day fashion festival (26 – 30 Oct), the spotlight was trained on an eclectic mix of Asian designers whose collections were showcased on not just one, but two different stages.

This year’s highlights

Indeed, the highlight of this year’s Singapore Fashion Week was none other than its emphasis on Asia; be it Asian-born designers, or designers based in Asia.

Out of nearly 22 featured creations, 20 in the show were from Asian designers – the greatest number in all of 15 years.

This was a distinct departure from the previous year, where American designer Diane von Furstenberg opened the show, and British style meister,Victoria Beckham, closed it.

Today, we bring you a quick round-up of some noteworthy designers at this year’s Singapore Fashion Week and their spectacular collections!

1. Day 1 – Guo Pei opens the event

Kicking off the event on the main stage was designer Guo Pei.

The Chinese born-and-raised dressmaker is best known for dolling Rihanna up in a canary-yellow, floor-trailing gown during the MOMA 2015.

The Only Guide You Need To Exploring Lavender: Food, Cafes, Fitness & More!

What is the one thing that is most synonymous with Lavender?

Most would say the ICA, but there’s so much more to Lavender than expired passports, automotive shops and hardware resellers.

We decided to spend some time in the neighbourhood to see if there is truly plenty to see, eat and do to keep us entertained throughout the day.

Things to do

CrossFit Fire City

If you aren’t already familiar with the jargons WOD, AMRAP and EMOM, the idea of CrossFit might sound daunting to you.

[caption id="attachment_17617" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: CrossFit Fire City Credit: CrossFit Fire City[/caption]

It is a common misconception that CrossFit is only for the fit, or the very strong. But that’s not true because the WODs (Workout Of the Day) are tailored to each individual’s abilities.

At CrossFit Fire City, box owner, Sam (affectionately known as Uncle Sam), and his friendly community of CrossFitters will ease you right into the workout.

[caption id="attachment_17618" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: CrossFit Fire City Credit: CrossFit Fire City[/caption]

Because the WODs are different each time, your muscles will never get used to any particular routine. This makes CrossFit one of the most effective ways to tone up those muscles.

Just an hour-long WOD will get you pumped up and energised for a day of exploring.

Trium Fitness

Just a stone’s throw away from Sam’s box lies Trium Fitness – a newly opened fitness studio specialising in yoga and pilates.

[caption id="attachment_17620" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: Trium Fitness Credit: Trium Fitness[/caption]

Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to flood the studio as you breathe in your downdog, or invert in aerial silks.

The studio not only teaches conventional yoga styles, but also allows you to stretch your head (and body) in classes like wheel or aerial yoga.

[caption id="attachment_17621" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: Trium Fitness Credit: Trium Fitness[/caption]

Wheel yoga is relatively new in Singapore.

The class makes use of the Dharma wheel to open the shoulders and arch the back for a deeper stretch. This will aid in your poses on the mat.

Aerial yoga needs no introduction – cirque du soleil style, aerial yoga helps yogis gain confidence in being upside-down. Also, it helps to build arm and upper body strength.

You’ll have so much fun that you wouldn’t even remember that you’re working out.

What to eat

The Refinery

The Refinery is just a couple units down from Sam’s box, perfect for post-CrossFit refuelling.

[caption id="attachment_17622" align="alignnone" width="740"]Credit: The Refinery Credit: The Refinery[/caption]

High ceilings, local art, marble table tops, and wooden communal tables – The Refinery is one of the most Instagram-worthy cafes on the island.

But that’s not all this cafe has to offer.

[caption id="attachment_17623" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: The Refinery Credit: The Refinery[/caption]

The Refinery boasts an extensive menu that changes depending on whether you’re heading over for a weekday dinner or weekend brunch.

The food is Japanese-inspired with a local twist, so expect yakitori-style skewers from the grill, donburis, and local cafe classics such as food laced with truffle and salted egg flavours.

We loved ‘The Epic’ Beef Gyudon with Foie Gras because, really, who can resist rib eye beef, foie gras, onsen egg and truffle flavouring in a single dish?!

AEIOU

At the other end of CrossFit Firecity lies an understated cafe, its signage reading “Oriental Antique House”.

[caption id="attachment_17627" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: AEIOU Credit: AEIOU[/caption]

Though it is actually a cafe called AEIOU, its signage hasn’t proven to be entirely wrong.

AEIOU is adorned with upcycled furniture – rattan chairs, wooden tables and all things vintage. It is pretty much like a modern karang guni’s very well put-together home.

[caption id="attachment_17626" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: AEIOU Credit: AEIOU[/caption]

Their upcycling extends to tableware, where vodka bottles are cut into cups that hold their drinks and desserts.

[caption id="attachment_17628" align="aligncenter" width="640"]aeiou3 Credit: AEIOU[/caption]

Bask in nostalgia as you sip on your avocado coffee – one of the highlights of their menu.

Creamy avocado blend in one hand, and a shot of espresso in the other, marry the two for a party in your mouth.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how the butteriness of the avocado mellows out the bitterness of the coffee.
