The Heat Is On! Are You Game For Some Competitive Eating?
You’ve probably seen Takeru Kobayashi shovel down hot dogs after hot dogs, or heard about L.A Beast a.k.a skippy62able who posts videos of his eating challenges on YouTube. But do you know that the competitive eating scene in Singapore is also very…competitive?
[caption id="attachment_6776" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Food League Singapore[/caption]Earlier this year in January, competitive eater Zermatt Neo made headlines by chucking down a whopping 4kg of chicken rice under 30 minutes! (If you have no idea how much 4kg of chicken rice is, that’s basically 10 people‘s lunch) Then in February, he took on another challenge and wolfed down a 21-inch pizza in 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6rOJxLR1Sc
It’s a chicken rice party in him tummy
If your face isn’t contorted in shock, Zermatt also boasts (in different occasions) The Beast Burger Challenge, 123 sticks of Lok Lok in 30 minutes, 150 sticks of satay, 100 gyozas, 100 chicken wings and….
[caption id="attachment_6761" align="alignnone" width="446"] Image source: Beast? What beast?JCube’s So Spicy Challenge
Not everyone has a huge tummy capacity but one thing for sure is that we Singaporeans sure love spicy food. If you’re one of those who is always going “more chilli, add sambal, extra spicy…”, how about putting your tongue’s spicy-o-meter to the test with JCube’s #SoSpicyChallenge?
[caption id="attachment_6771" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: So Spicy Challenge[/caption]With the Qualifying Round taking place on the 14th, 15th and 21st of May, and the Grand Finale on the 22nd of May, this year’s edition of the #SoSpicyChallenge will definitely turn the heat on. How hot? It’s gonna be like winner gets to fly to Japan kind of hot.
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="480"] Image source: JCube. They will contact you with participation details. You can also head down to JCube’s Customer Service Counter at B1 at the mall to get your copy of J.Mag, which is loaded with information about the challenge.
Alternatively, you can earn your way for a direct entry to the quarter finals of the #SoSpicyChallenge by taking the spicy trail and collecting your ‘battle scars’. This challenge has already begun and all you have to do is challenge the dishes at the participating outlets (as above) and collect your stamps at B1 Customer Service Counter with your receipt. Once you’ve collected 120 points with at least 1 stamp from each spicy level, you’ve literally eaten your way to the quarter finals.
Think you have what it takes for the #SoSpicyChallenge? We highly recommend you to sign up with a group of friends and settle the “I have a higher spicy tolerance level than you” feud once and for all.

Enjoy Oysters From All Over The World! You’ll Have A Shell Of A Time.
Oyster lovers, listen up! The World Oyster Festival by Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro is back for another year!
[caption id="attachment_6600" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro[/caption]Set to take place on the 1st of July 2016, this will be the fourth edition of the bistro’s very own festival. Like every other year, the festival boasts a good 20 varieties of oysters flown in from around the world for this special festival. Did we also mention that these juicy succulent oysters are fresh? They’re not frozen.
[caption id="attachment_6601" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro[/caption]It is safe to say that July is the best time for us to enjoy oysters. Cold water is where you can harvest great shellfishes and around that time of the year, the waters in the northern hemisphere is still chilly and the southern hemisphere has already entered winter. That is literally the best of both worlds.
[caption id="attachment_6602" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro [/caption]The World Oyster Festival is not only about eating fresh oysters but also a crash course in #oysters101. Like fine wine, the flavours of oysters differ according to region. Some can be a little more salty than others, while others are creamier, richer, metallic or even fruity like the Kumamoto Oysters (our personal favourite) that are famed for a honey dew finish.
[caption id="attachment_6603" align="alignnone" width="960"] Image source: Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro[/caption]Greenwood has yet to announce the price for this festival. Looking at past festivals, this is going to be a shell of a time. So mark it down on your calendar, share the news with your friends (don’t be shellfish) and follow us for more updates!

Star Wars Day Singapore 2016 Set To Storm Kallang Wave Mall This Weekend
Star Wars fans, listen up! Whether you’re a Sith or a Jedi, Imperials or Rebels, Star Wars Day Singapore is set to take Kallang Wave Mall by storm from 30 April to 1 May, 2016! Now, isn’t that the perfect way to celebrate the long Labour Day weekend? *cues The Imperial March anthem*
May the 4th is an important day to all Star Wars fans and is celebrated worldwide. Although ‘Star Wars Day’ is not created by Lucasfilm, the film company that created this worldwide phenomenal has embraced the spirit of fandom that makes this day so special.
Partnering #MAYTHE4THSG, a Singaporean-based Star Wars fan collective, Kallang Wave Mall promises a fun-filled two-day celebration for all Star Wars fans, collectors, and families.
With their ‘base’ at the OCBC Square at Singapore Sports Hub, the festival will showcase all things Star Wars – from the original trilogy that began in 1977 to the latest Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Visitors can look forward to an eye-opening galactic experience and get up-close with screen-accurate Star Wars costumes, courtesy of the 501st Legion and Rebel Outpost.
If you think that sounds cool, we have even greater news for you. The Force Awakens’ panel by Lucasfilm will take place over both days of the event! Yes, you’ve heard people raving about it during Comic Con and now it’s your time to witness it with your own eyes.
For the juniors, check out FightSaber Kids Workshop and get into some ‘bdzzew bdzzew’ action. While they’re at it, sign them up for the Kids Fashion Parade too!
And the force doesn’t stop just right there. Spend $60 and above at any of Kallang Wave Mall’s tenants (or $100 at Fair Price Xtra Kallang Wave) to receive a free express pass to the Star Wars Day Singapore photobooth. If you spent over $120 (or $180 at Fair Price Xtra Kallang Wave), you’ll walk away with a BB-8 umbrella! This promotion is only valid from 30th April to 1st May.
For those who want to stock up on some collectibles, there will also be a pop-up concept store selling Star Wars merchandise at the atrium of the mall over the weekend.
Our next dose of galaxy battle, ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, will only come by this December. While waiting for it to arrive, why not storm down to Kallang Wave Mall this weekend like a Trooper and celebrate the force! May the 4th be with you!

Everything For Free? Introducing SG’s Really Really Free Market!
Most people applaud those who have the bravery and heart to hoard as little as possible. That’s why there are books on minimalism, theories on only keeping things that matter, and documentary-slash-interventions on doing away with things you don’t need.
There’s also a certain joy and liberation you get from cleaning, not to mention, the extra space in the house, especially if you’re living in a small apartment.
At least that’s how my friends and I felt when we attended the 41st Singapore Really Really Free Market organised by local social enterprise Post-Museum. The event, which was hosted at art gallery DECK in central-Singapore, celebrates a more sustainable way of living, and sharing what we have.
This went beyond material goods like clothes, toys, and books. You could also get a tarot card reading for free if you were interested. You could learn to hoola-hoop with strangers if you were feeling a little sporty. Or listen to someone tell a story. For a minute, people forgot about their wallets, the malls, and the tiresome art of negotiating.
My loot from the free market included a book featuring the twenty arrondissements of Paris (pictured below), which is a charming find for any francophile, a golden bikini top that will go superbly with a trip to Siloso Beach, and a button-down shirt that looks as good as new. What a score!
Best of all, everyone is welcomed. From young children who grabbed secondhand plush toys to couples picking out roller blades and books to the older folks picking out designer clothing. Just don’t forget sunscreen and an open mind.
The next Singapore Really Really Free Market will take place on 19 June 2016. For more information, you can hit up their Facebook page!
