Monkey Goes West Is Back This Year With More Laughs & Catchy Tunes!

With the year of the Monkey coming to an end, here’s how you can send it off with a bang – by checking out the award-winning Monkey Goes West.

Set to take stage at Drama Centre Theatre from 18 November to 17 December 2016, Monkey Goes West is cheeky retelling of our beloved Chinese fantasy classic – Journey To The West.

Unlike the original story that ended in India, this one will take you on an epic Singaporean thrill ride from Haw Par Villa to Jurong West.

Adventure of a Lifetime

Monkey Goes West tells the tale of an orphan named Ah Tang who ran away from home after a argument with his family.

[caption id="attachment_17786" align="alignnone" width="800"]1473821267392 Image source: W!ld Rice[/caption]

He then finds himself transported to a strange land and he befriends a trio of fellow travellers: Wukong the cheeky Monkey King; Pigsy, a brave but always-hungry warrior; and Sandy, a stubborn but loyal river ogre.

[caption id="attachment_17782" align="alignnone" width="700"]062014monkey Image source: W!ld Rice[/caption]

Together, the fearless four embark on an adventure of a lifetime, one filled with trials and dangers.

Can they tame the rowdy fire-breathing Red Boy? Will they be able to defeat the monstrous King Bull and his man-eating wife, Princess Iron Fan?

And more importantly, will Ah Tang ever find a place that he can call home?

Award Winning Production & Team

Monkey Goes West was completely sold out on its first run in 2014, playing to more than 15,000 theatre goers.

It then went on to dominate the 2015 Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards with a whopping 7 nominations, more than any other production that year.

[caption id="attachment_17783" align="alignnone" width="700"]042014monkey Image source: W!ld Rice[/caption]

They eventually bagged the awards for Production of the Year, Readers’ Choice Award for Production of the Year, and Best Costume Design (Tube Gallery by Phisit & Saxit).

[caption id="attachment_17781" align="alignnone" width="700"]072014monkey Image source: W!ld Rice[/caption]

This time round, the play will be directed by Broadway Beng Sebastian Tan, written by Alfian Sa’at, with music composed by Elaine Chan.

Both Sebastian and Elaine were nominated for the Best Director and Best Sound Design or Original Score category of the 2015 awards respectively.

[caption id="attachment_17784" align="alignnone" width="700"]032014monkey Image source: W!ld Rice[/caption]

On top of that, the cast of the play includes some of Singapore’s most experienced veteran actors and rising stars – Sugie Phua (nominated for Best Actor) and Siti Khalijah (nominated for Best Supporting Actress) will be sharing the stage with familiar faces like Chua Enlai, Darius Tan, Joshua Lim, and many more talented actors and actresses.

Packed with catchy tunes, hilarious gags, cool wushu moves and magic, you can count on Monkey Goes West to brighten up your day and keep you laughing, so you can end your year with a blast.

Feeling Experimental? Try Alchemist Beer Lab’s Super Funky Infused Beers!

Still recovering from last month’s Oktoberfest? Well, the Alchemist Beer Lab might just be the cure for this hangover – more beer for you!

Alchemist Beer Lab

Located at the snazzily glamorous Beach Road, this first and only beer lab in Asia may look very experimental. However, they’re actually the brainchild of the team behind Little Island Brewing Co. at Changi.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-50-42-pm

Rest assured that they know what they’re doing!

What is Infused Beer?

The idea of infused beer may sound new, but it has been around for a while in Europe.

Basically, ingredients are first placed into the fusion chamber. Compressed gas is then released before the beer is injected into a tower.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-33-18-pm

Flavours from ingredients are extracted as pressure is being released from the process. This produces a surprising and delightful twist to the beer.

If this sounds too rocket science for you, just think of it as cold pressed juice, but the beer version.

For Those Who Love Classics

At Alchemist Beer Lab, a whopping 16 infused beer towers are available for brewers to experiment.

Out of the 16 glass towers, eight taps consist of familiar creations by Little Island Brewing Co., such as Sister Golden Ale, Singapore Pale Ale and the award wining That Old Black Magic, that clinched a Gold Medal at the 2016 Asia Beer Awards.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-31-20-pm

Other popular flavours such as sweet and semi-dry cider, red and white wines are also available for drinkers who prefer classics.

If you’re up for some funk, any choice of the remaining eight towers would make for a great pint of beer.

New & Best Flavours to Try

It’s all about experimenting!

The infused beer for the eight towers are refreshed every week. This means you get to try new flavours all the time.

14591795_1583914505250613_3013903297968251171_n

What caught our attention is ‘Obama‘, a dry Irish stout infused with marshmallow, vanilla pod and mint leaves!

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-34-32-pm

On top of that, we heard a crowd favourite is the Ugly Sister Golden, a combination of ale infused with grilled pineapple and anise, a type of eastern Mediterranean spice.

If those sounds too avant-garde for you, go for the 50 Shades of Pink, a pretty safe yet fun mix of cider and pink guava.

One word of advice – we know it’s super satisfying to gulp your drink down but when it comes to these test tubes of alcohol, its best to take it slow and savour every single sip.

For The Peckish Drinker

It’s normal to get the hunger pangs when drinking and fortunately Alchemist Beer Lab has got some grub to fill your tummy up.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-36-41-pm

From Sticky Thai Chicken Wings, Duck Fat Chips to even Smoked Wagyu Brisket Tortilla, you can count on these tapas to complement your drink.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-37-37-pm

If you’re feeling really hungry, or so happen to drop by the place around lunch time, you would not want to miss their set lunch menu priced from $15.90++.

Why Visit?

The beer (duh), the food, and of course the ambience! The place is really intimate and cosy, perfect for a date or a catch up sesh with your friends.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-39-23-pm

It’s quiet enough for conversations and the decor is modern and edgy.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-40-25-pm

All beers are priced at $12 before 7pm and $15 after 7pm.

If you’re there with a couple of friends, go for the party pack. You’ll get to pick 3 beers and enjoy them at a price of $30 (before 7pm) and $38 (after 7pm). Red and white wine are priced at $12 all day, everyday.

Overall, Alchemist Beer Lab is the new hangout spot for all beer and tapas lovers. With such interesting and experimental infused beers, you’d surely want to grab your buddies for a night out!

COMILONA Presents Argentinian Flavours: Grilled Meat, Pumpkin For Dessert, & More!

Going to Argentina from Singapore is a long 30 hour flight. If you don’t have the time to visit the beautiful land, fret not! BoCHINche, an Argentinean restaurant in Singapore, brings the flavours of Argentina to you in a festival, COMILONA 2016.

For three nights only from 26 October to 28 October, tantalise your taste buds with flavours created by famous Argentinean chefs.

Argentinian Flavours

As Argentinian flavours are quite different from our local dishes, we were invited to a cooking demonstration where chefs explain and showcase the produce and culture of Argentinian cuisine.

Here’s what we had:

Humita

First up, Humita, a creamy corn dish, with similar textures to mash potatoes.

[caption id="attachment_17128" align="aligncenter" width="1759"]Credit: Rachel Lim Credit: Rachel Lim[/caption]

Cooked with onion, tomatoes and herbs, there was a perfect balance of sweet and savoury. This was surprising, as we’ve never tasted anything like this before – corn-based dish that was both sweet and salty at the same time!

Zapallo en almibar

From the Cuyo region, Zapallo en almibar is a dish where pumpkin is cooked till firm in water, then transferred and simmered in sugar syrup.

[caption id="attachment_17129" align="aligncenter" width="2448"]Argentinean Food, Bochinche Credit: Rachel Lim[/caption]

This dish is frequently eaten as a dessert. It’s mind-blowing for us Singaporeans, because we’re used to eating pumpkin as a vegetable, not as a sweet treat!

Chipa

Next, Chipa was served. It is a popular traditional Argentinean bread found in the north east regions of the country.

[caption id="attachment_17130" align="aligncenter" width="2284"]Argentinean Food, Bochinche Caption: Chef Martin Molteni with a bowl of Chipa
Credit: Rachel Lim[/caption]

The popular use of tapioca flour and cheese gave the Chipa its chewy texture. Then, the bread is baked, resulting in a crispy outside, and soft inside. What a great snack for any occasion!

Chimichurri

Another crowd favourite is the classic Chimichurri, an Argentinean meat sauce that is used to marinate meat before it is barbecued.

[caption id="attachment_17132" align="aligncenter" width="2362"]Argentinean Food, Bochinche Credit: Rachel Lim[/caption]

In Argentina, meat is a staple on every dinner table. Hence, the Chimichurri recipe has undergone generations of revisions. It’s like Sambal chilli to us.

A medium rare grilled steak was topped with Chimichurri. To no one’s surprise, the flavours of both the sauce and the beef complemented each other perfectly.

The Tippling Club: Where You’ll Not Only Sip Cocktails, But Also Smell Them!

With the introduction of new head bartender, Joe Schofield, Tippling Club has revamped their cocktail menu. Their new menu, titled Sensorium, seeks to unify aromas with spirits to invoke memories and emotions of our experiences.

“80 per cent of the flavours we taste come from our sense of smell”

It’s with this idea that the new menu was conceptualised. We’ll now not only sip cocktails, but also smell them! Sounds awesome, no?

Credits: Bless Press

Widely regarded as an innovative and forward thinking bar, the Tippling Club’s new menu has proven once again, that they’re ahead of the game.

The birth of the Sensorium Menu

The new menu places the emphasis on the aromatic rather than alcoholic.

Nothing stirs up cherished childhood memories like the smell of red crayons

14681065_1118416008236866_2919446330889782362_o

The idea was that customers should choose their preferred cocktails based on an aroma that interests them. It’s about your personality, your chosen smell, more than the choice of alcohol.

The process

We were honoured to have been given the opportunity to attend a tasting session.

First, they presented the whole menu through a bouquet of perfumed blotters.

credits: Bless Press

Scofield encouraged us to smell each one and to pick out our favorite scents. This was in line with their philosophy of placing precedence on smell.

And god, did they smell amazing.

He even stated at one point that he would be happy to see customers ‘stealing’ the blotters to keep for memories sake.

After showing us the scents and cocktails, it was time to taste them.

‘Potentially, we could be the first bar in Singapore to marry aromatic fragrance to our cocktails to such an extent. Perhaps even globally.’ Chef-Owner Ryan Clift

Well, we don’t doubt him.  The cocktails did not disappoint.

Cocktail – Rain

Have you ever actually thought about how rain smells like?

credits: Bless Press

Somehow, Tippling Club has managed to accurately capture the scents that immediately invoked my memories of rainfall upon the first whiff.

Rain is a eclectic mix of citrus, soda and vodka, served with an edible stone.

Don’t worry, the stone, unlike its namesake, is actually cushiony. The initial bite is chalky, but it soon melts in your mouth for that earthy aftertaste, just like how I feel rain would taste like.

The drink itself is light and refreshing. The flavours and the alcohol were delicately balanced.

The Negroni

They say you can’t beat a classic.

unspecified-6

Well, we think that Tippling Club has just made the classic even better! Negroni doesn’t just taste good – it smells just as delish!

Essentially still equal parts gin, sweet vermouth and campari, Tippling Club used ultrasonic sound waves to emulate a barrel-aged flavour. The traditional orange garnish is actually a negroni-flavoured gelatine mix!

Refreshing, punchy, and uplifting. We’d love to go for seconds.

The Campfire

Do you reminisce your adventurous days spent outdoors by the campfire?

This cocktail will help you relive those memories.

credits: Bless Press

This is an incredible melody of marshmallow milk, burnt syrup, ash and gin, served together with a slightly roasted marshmallow.

How does it smell? Smoky, and absolutely delectable. We never thought we could describe a smell as delicious, until now.

The Caramel

The caramel was a clear favourite both in terms of sight and smell.

unspecified-10

The aroma was pleasantly tart, elevating the rich, saccharine flavour of caramel with just a hint of citrus and rum.

The drink itself proved to be well balanced and not overly sweet, served along with a salted caramel lollipop made in house.

No better treat than this.

Details

The cocktails on the Sensorium menu go for 22SGD a pop, which was a pleasant surprise. With such detailed thought and meticulous care put into the menu and cocktails, we fully expected them to go for more conventional premium prices.

photo_2016-10-23_15-09-14

Alas, we forgot that Tippling Club does not do conventional, they’re that special round peg in a square hole. Furthermore, it only goes to show that the priorities of Tippling Club are to delight their customers.
