5. Epicurious Cafe
[caption id="attachment_14320" align="alignnone" width="900"]
First it was rainbow cake making the Insta-rounds. Then earlier in the year, videos of rainbow-coloured cheeses stretching in various postures went viral, thanks to Kala Toast in Hong Kong. And now, our own Epicurious Cafe has also created the first Rainbow Cheese Toastie in Singapore.
The rainbow is made up of 5 different colours and flavours: Pink (beetroot), Orange (carrot), Green (Spinach), Blue (potato and garlic with butterfly pea) and Violet (eggplant and red cabbage).
Great to know that it’s made using natural ingredients and minimal colouring. At least we can eat this appealing cheese toastie at ease! Have fun stretching your rainbow for the best shots before you tuck in to the crispy and buttery toast!

Food For Thought – A Day In The Life Of A Singaporean Hawker

When a steaming plate of Chai Tow Kway is presented to us Singaporeans, we are probably consumed by the thought of gobbling it up. However, the scrumptious local dishes we enjoy and relish are the fruit of our Hawkers’ labour. Have you ever wondered what it’s like to take a walk in the shoes (or rather, rubber boots!) of our local hawkers?
A Tale of Two Hawkers
[caption id="attachment_13771" align="alignnone" width="745"]
Mdm Wang Li Er and Ms Deniece Tan are amongst two of our country’s hawkers. While most of us still lie in bed sleeping, these two individuals are up to prepare for the bustling day ahead even before the sun rises!
[caption id="attachment_13772" align="alignnone" width="747"]
Let’s go behind-the-scenes and uncover the various tasks, joys, and tales that pepper the days of a Singaporean Hawker.
Mdm Wang from Cambridge Rd Hong Kong Roast Pork
[caption id="attachment_13755" align="alignnone" width="1438"]
Think of Mdm Wang as Chef Gustav from Ratatoullie – she’s a seasoned hawker and a veteran in the Hawker scene. Having run her stall, Cambridge Rd Hong Kong Roast Pork, for years, Mdm Wang is certainly familiar with the tough labour associated with the Hawker trade.
Tolerating the unbearable heat from standing next to the fire all day. Replenishing dishes as they run out. Washing the plates and bowls at the end of the day. Can you imagine doing this everyday
[caption id="attachment_13773" align="alignnone" width="744"]
These are tasks that have become part and parcel of Mdm Wang’s life, yet she enduringly carries them out!
Going The Extra Mile
Mdm Wang doesn’t stop at her hawker duties. She also goes the extra mile to give back to the community.
[caption id="attachment_13774" align="alignnone" width="731"]
She takes a little bit of time each day to print and distribute food coupons to the elderly, as some of them simply cannot afford meals. These coupons can then be exchanged for a free meal at her stall.
Talk about an unsung hero- Mdm Wang’s story certainly tugs at our heartstrings.
[caption id="attachment_13766" align="alignnone" width="1440"]
Preparing and distributing these coupons on top of her regular job may be tough physically and financially, but Mdm Wang finds it very fulfilling. In her eyes, helping others brings her more happiness than money can buy!

Deniece Tan From Truly Test Kitchen
[caption id="attachment_13775" align="alignnone" width="753"]
Deniece didn’t start off as an aspiring hawker. In fact, this 27-year-old was a regular working adult. Having graduated with a degree in business, Deniece landed a prestigious job in foreign exchanging banking. Ultimately, she knew her heart belonged somewhere else.
[caption id="attachment_13776" align="alignnone" width="735"]
Deniece’s father, Mr Tan, had owned a hawker stall selling curry rice since she was little. Indeed, Deniece was brought up with good local home-cooked food. In a bold (and shocking!) move, she left a job with enviable career prospects and started Truly Test Kitchen to continue her father’s legacy.
It was a 360-degree change for her. However, Deniece has never regretted her decision. To her, the early mornings and hard work are but small sacrifices as she chases her dream!
[caption id="attachment_13777" align="alignnone" width="745"]
“There’s just so much joy and satisfaction when you see that you have made so many people happy”, said the inspiring 27-year-old with a smile.
Show Your Love to Local Hawkers With a Message
Being a hawker is often a thankless job. Think about it: when was the last time you showed appreciation to them for all their hard work? Tiger Beer makes it easy for us to show our gratitude to hawkers like Mdm Wang and Deniece Tan.
A little thanks goes a long way for our hawkers who toil day and night to deliver our favourite local dishes to us! All we have to do is take a photo of our favourite hawker fare, share it on social media with a thank you message, and include #uncagestreetfood.
Tiger Street Food Support Fund
[caption id="attachment_13765" align="alignnone" width="646"]
In a bid to keep this proud and roaring flame for local food alive, Tiger Singapore has set up a fund to encourage aspiring hawkers like Deniece to enter the trade. It can be hard to grapple with costs for an inexperienced hawker, so that’s where Tiger’s Street Food Support Fund comes in!
20 cents from each 6-can pack of beer purchased will be channelled to the Tiger Street Food Support Fund. Budding hawkers can apply for this fund from now till 15th November. Successful applicants will receive up to SGD $10,000 funding from Tiger Beer!
Go Nuts for Local Businesses!
[caption id="attachment_13768" align="alignnone" width="648"]
Hawkers aren’t the only local businesses that propel our nation’s food culture: Local food brands do too!
Tiger has partnered with local nut brand, Camel, to launch the limited edition Nasi Lemak Sambal Flavoured Nuts! You know, the salty, crunchy and spicy ikan billis and peanuts that we know and love? It can be purchased at convenience stores with a purchase of two 500ml cans of Tiger Beer. It’s available from now to 30th September 2016!
You can also indulge in this exclusive packet of nuts with a purchase of draught beer or a bucket of Tiger Beer from 1st September to 31st October 2016 at select bars and pubs.
Food For Thought
[caption id="attachment_13778" align="alignnone" width="735"]
Being a hawker is no easy life. That is why our Hawker heritage needs preserving. A small gesture of appreciation from you and me, like thanking them and flashing a smile, could just be the encouragement they need to make their hard work and sacrifices worthwhile.
[caption id="attachment_13756" align="alignnone" width="1200"]
The next time you receive your plate of hawker food, don’t forget to thank your hawker!
From now to 8 September, also take a picture of your hawker food before you dig in! Join in the fun and upload the picture to social media. Include #uncagestreetfood, and your picture may be included in a Tiger Beer video! It’ll be a collective thank you to those who keep our great food and unique hawker culture alive.
[caption id="attachment_13779" align="alignnone" width="753"]
Deniece and Mdm Wang represent the present and future when it comes to upholding Singapore’s food culture. Do your part to ensure an enduring hawker tradition today!

If you’re a true blue Singaporean you would know that the National Gallery occupies two of Singapore’s landmarks; the Old Supreme Court and City Hall. The history of this building dates back to the 1920s where it was first named the Municipal Building.
The Supreme Court and the adjacent City Hall underwent a thorough restoration from 2012 until its grand opening in 2015.
If you’ve stepped into the National Gallery you would know that most if not all of the original architecture still remains. Let’s be honest, the art work pales in comparison to the grandeur of this national monument.
What’s great about the National Gallery is that the architecture and overall feel is dependent on which section of the National Gallery you’re at. The Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Gallery, the Former Supreme Court Foyer and Inside the Rotunda are amazing places to propose!

Better Than A Power Nap – Freedom Yoga Energises You In Just 30 Minutes!

A common excuse I give for not being able to clock in a workout is that “I’m too busy” – and I’m sure I’m not the only one guilty of this. We neglect our bodies because we get so caught up with work sometimes. It’s important to strive to sweat once a day. That’s why Elvina Cheong, founder of Freedom Yoga, decided to put in place a 30-minute Energiser Express class. It’s perfect for busy individuals like you and me.
[caption id="attachment_14200" align="aligncenter" width="1000"]
The Space
To cater to the corporate crowd, Freedom Yoga is strategically situated in the heart of the CBD. Its large, minimalistic interior, cosy chill out space, and high ceilings are a breath of fresh air – a change from the confines of a cramped office.
It is the perfect place to retreat to when you need a pick-me-up during your lunch break or a nice, long stretch after spending the day crouched over your desk.
The Energiser Express
I popped by Freedom Yoga at lunchtime on a weekday to clock in my 30-minute sweat. I love a strong practice, but I entered the class with no expectations of a challenging sequence.
I thought, “Just how challenging can a 30-minute class be?” But boy, was I wrong.
[caption id="attachment_14201" align="aligncenter" width="899"]

Elvina made the most of the 30 minutes, and worked every muscle in my body. There were no warm-ups to begin with, just a few vinyasa flows before we dived right into it.
“Plank, right knee to elbow, right knee to wrist, right knee to opposite elbow, right knee to opposite wrist, three-legged dog!”
My core was crying, but Elvina reminded us that we had to repeat the same sequence on our left side as well. She even managed to squeeze in an arm balance – my favourite crow pose, before transitioning into a vinyasa.
Talk about a quick and powerful workout!
The 30-minute class didn’t kill me like a 90-minute class would, but it sure made me work extra hard to burn as many calories in that little amount of time.
Thank goodness for shower rooms, because I surprisingly worked up a sweat in that 30 minutes (and I don’t even sweat easily!). I was refreshed, awake, and ready to take on the rest of the day. Looks like the Energiser Express class truly lives up to its name!

OH. MY. GAWD! A F.R.I.E.N.D.S – Themed Cafe Is Opening In Singapore!

If you grew up watching re-runs of the popular sitcom FRIENDS, you might have heard news of a Central Perk opening its doors on our sunny island! As an avid FRIENDS enthusiast myself (I have VCDs to prove it. Yes, VCDs.), I was a tad skeptical when I first saw the crowdfunding project on Indiegogo.
The One With The Owner
Let’s be honest a lot of spinoffs and fan-made projects rarely pan out ( I have yet to see a FRIENDS movie, even after 12 years of waiting!) so when I chanced upon a “Central Perk SG Friends Themed Cafe” it attracted my attention but I didn’t have much hope it would pan out.
And boy am I glad I was wrong, theCentral Perk SG Facebook page has more than 16,000 likes (obviously there are MANY FRIENDS fans here in Singapore)!
Lim Jit Min (like a lot of us), fell in love with FRIENDS back when he was a student in Anglo-Chinese School. He says that he saw Central Perk SG as a place when friends could gather and reminisce about the popular show.
The One with Central Perk
What we really want to know is what does Central Perk SG look like? Lim Jit Min is bringing in the trademark aspects of the show and original cafe to Central Perk SG. Look out for the coffee bar, the Central Perk logo, a recreation of Monica’s kitchen, Pat the Dog and of course not forgetting the trademark orange couch!
Lim Jit Min, brought the aspect of FRIENDS to the menu as well; cheesecake from Little Mama’s bakery and the “Moist Maker” are just some examples of just how much Lim Jit Min is tying the FRIENDS concept to his themed cafe. If you’re keen on bringing something back to remember your time spent here, get your hands on caps, apparel and mugs printed with FRIENDS quotes!

In the meantime, why not re-watch the whole 10 seasons again!?

While you can get your pre-orders for Apple’s newest brainchild tomorrow (Sept 9) on the Apple website. If you would rather have the experience of seeing and touching the phone in person before dropping a mean thousand dollars, the phone is available in stores next Friday (Sept 16). While the new iPhone 7 is great news for any big tech fan out there for the rest of us it means seeing hordes of people queuing up at your local telcos.
We gathered a list of places to AVOID if you’re not keen on a) getting your hands on the iPhone 7 b) struggling to make your way through a very excited and impatient crowd.

Here’s A Look At Funan’s New Revamped Look – And It Is Cool AF!

If you’re really into technology or if you’ve gotten replacements for your electronic gadgets over the years you would have stepped into Funan DigitaLife Mall at least once. The mall which has been closed since June, is known for selling electronic gadgets and computers. The former IT mall will continue to be closed until 2019, where it will reopen its doors as a mixed-used complex. But lucky for us, we got a sneak peak at what the new Funan will look and IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND.
The New Funan
At 887, 000 sq ft the new and improved Funan will house offices, serviced apartments and 6 floors chock full of retail stores.
For comparison, the nearby Raffles City stands at only 421,720 sq ft! If you think Funan is losing its roots as the one stop shop for IT you are sorely mistaken! Funan is implementing a tech experience to its customers. Targeting mobile customers, you can now pick up your purchases at the Funan concierge or even get it delivered!
According to Mr Lim Ming Yan President and Group CEO of CapitaLand Limited,
“With community, connectivity and convenience at its core, Funan will cater to the new breed of consumers who favour a collaborative environment and authentic experiences that reflect their passions and tastes.”
To support healthy living and an increasingly car-less society, Funan is gearing towards providing services for bicyclists! Bike shops and shower facilities are in the works, cyclists can now rejoice! YES to keeping fit AND smelling fresh on the go!
If you’re not a cyclist, do not fret! Golden Village is offering a multi-sensory experience in its new Funan home. (Does this mean 4D cinema experience?!) Kopitiam, another major tenant will be featuring robotic vacuum cleaners and self-ordering kiosks! And if that isn’t getting you excited, a 50-lane rock climbing wall that will span 4 floors is being erected by Climb Central!
