8 Best Fish Soups In S’pore That Will Have You Savouring Every Last Drop
Everybody has their own go-to comfort food. But when it’s raining outside, there’s probably one dish that’s on everyone’s minds. Sliced Fish Soup.
This delightful warm bowl of clear umami broth paired with chunky slices of fresh fish and vegetables, is the ultimate comfort food for rainy days.
To save you the trouble of finding the best fish soup, we’ve compiled a list of the best in Singapore.
Food For The Soul
1. Jin Hua Fish Head Bee Hoon
This is our go-to place for a good, satisfying bowl of fish soup.
[caption id="attachment_32156" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Burpple User Bryan Lee[/caption]Go for the Fried Fish Soup ($4) if you’re feeling a little more indulgent with your diet. The fried fish slices are a good size and still retain their crispiness despite being soaked in the broth.
The Sliced Fish Soup ($4) is also a delight to eat, with the fresh springy slices of fish. We love that they choose to use chopped xiao bai cai (baby bok choy) in their soup, which makes the dish easier to eat. You just need a spoon!
As with most sliced fish soup stalls, you have the option of adding milk to your broth.
If you’re looking for a good place for sliced fish soup, this is it.
Jin Hua Fish Head Bee Hoon
Address: 1 Kadayanallur Street, #01-77 Maxwell Food Centre, Singapore, 069184
Opening Hours: Fri – Wed: 11am – 8.30pm, Thu: Closed
2. Blanco Court Fried Fish Soup
Blanco Court Fried Fish Soup is one of the old greats that used to reside in the now-demolished Blanco Court Food Centre.
The broth here is flavourful though some find the soup too salty.
The fried fish is crispy and chunky and the broth is served with plenty of deep fried egg batter.
[caption id="attachment_32157" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Justin Teo[/caption]They also use spinach in their soup (we LOVE spinach), which imparts a different texture and taste to the dish compared to the more bitter chye sim variants.
They’ve moved to a new standalone shophouse at Beach Road and they added other dishes such as Black Bean Fish Head with Bittergourd, Prawn Rolls and Chicken Wings besides their signature Fried Fish Soup.
There’s a reason they’ve been a favourite among locals for so long.
So come on down to try it for yourself!
Blanco Court Fried Fish Soup
Address: 325 Beach Road, Singapore, 199559
Opening Hours: Mon – Sat: 10am – 7.30pm
Contact no.: 9151 2401
3. 127 Lorong 1 Fish Soup
Named after their address, 127 Lorong 1 Fish Soup serves up a mean sliced fish soup.
[caption id="attachment_32178" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Alex Chua[/caption]The broth is is not too salty, yet comes with a tinge of tanginess which comes from the olive vegetables used in the soup.
If you’re not feeling sliced fish soup, you can order Saba Fish set. They sell steamed and fried dumplings and fried mackerel fillets, which are perfect sides to complement your fish soup.
127 Lorong 1 Fish Soup
Address: Blk 127 Toa Payoh Lorong 1 #02-33, Singapore, 310127
Opening Hours: Tue – Sun: 7am – 8pm, Mon: Closed
4. Angel Horse Teochew Fish Soup
The name of this stall, Angel Horse Teochew Fish Soup, is a direct translation from their Chinese name. But that aside, the Sliced Fish Soup ($3 – $5) served here is pure comfort food.
[caption id="attachment_32180" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Julius Lim[/caption]The broth here is star of the dish. In most cases, the fish would be in the spotlight. However, the broth in this dish is packed with flavour, which complements the fresh and tender fish slices.
They even add bitter gourd into the soup. Most places will have you paying extra or you have to order the sliced fish bitter gourd soup but not here. Here, it’s included!
They open at 11am daily, so come early or join the snaking queues.
If you’re looking for a humble bowl of sliced fish soup that hits all the right spots, this is it.
Angel Horse Teochew Fish Soup
Address: 270 Queen Street, #01-95 Albert Centre Market & Food Centre, Singapore, 180270
Opening Hours: Daily: 11am – 10pm
5. Piao Ji Fish Porridge
Unlike other fish stalls, Piao Ji Fish Porridge uses pomfret instead of the usual batang fish in their sliced fish soup. Pomfret has a smoother texture and has sweeter flesh than batang fish, which is also why the price here is higher.
You can also choose to add prawns to your soup, which amps up the umami in the broth.
[caption id="attachment_32181" align="aligncenter" width="960"] Image Credit: Burpple User Tiara Lim[/caption]As if the soup does not have enough flavour, the chef also adds bits of crispy lard to the soup.
Piao Ji is the stall to visit if you’re looking for a seriously indulgent bowl of sliced fish soup. Do come prepared to queue though.
Piao Ji Fish Porridge
Address: 7 Maxwell Road, #02-100/103 Amoy Street Food Centre, Singapore, 069111
Opening Hours: Fri – Wed: 10.30am – 3pm, Thu: Closed
6. First Street Teochew Fish Soup
First Street Teochew Fish Soup is one of our favourites.
You can choose from batang fish, pomfret or red grouper for your sliced fish soup. What’s more, you can choose to add minced meat and fish roe to the broth for extra flavour.
[caption id="attachment_32183" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Blueskies Cottonclouds[/caption]If that does not sound good to you, we don’t know what does.
If you need your carbs to go with your protein-packed soup, you can choose from rice, bee hoon, or the rare mee sua.(Seriously, why is mee sua so hard to find?)
Honestly, we can’t wait to head back for our next bowl of fish soup.
First Street Teochew Fish Soup
Address: 1014 Upper Serangoon Road, Double One Kopitiam, Singapore, 534752
Opening Hours: Tue – Sun: 8am – 3pm, Mon: Closed
Contact no.: 8161 9552
7. Han Kee Fish Soup
Han Kee Fish Soup is the other well known fish soup stall in Amoy Street Food Centre. If you think that Han Kee is the backup stall that people go to because Piao Ji has a long queue, you are sorely mistaken.
Han Kee is known for their crystal clear yet flavourful broth. But the best thing about them is that they are very generous with their fish slices.
[caption id="attachment_32184" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Ying Ying[/caption]However, the queue here is just as long as Piao Ji, so expect to wait for a bit.
While Piao Ji is known for their robust, meaty broth, Han Kee serves up a clear and refreshing alternative.
If you’re planning to go on a diet, this is a good place to start. You can thank us later.
Han Kee Fish Soup
Address: 7 Maxwell Road, #02-129 Amoy Street Food Centre, Singapore, 069111
Opening Hours: Mon – Fri: 10am – 3pm, Sat – Sun: Closed
8. Lu Jia Fish Soup
Lu Jia Fish Soup at Yishun seems to be serving many types of fish-related items.
We’re not complaining though. We love the variety of options. Right off the bat, you get to choose the type of rice you want, white rice or yam rice.
Then there’s Fried Fish Skin ($1) and Fried Beancurd Skin ($1) to choose as add-ons to the soup. That’s not all, they even have Salmon as an option for the sliced fish soup. And mee sua!
[caption id="attachment_32185" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Burpple User Ellena Guan[/caption]This stall has everything you didn’t know you wanted. Yam rice, Mee sua, Salmon, Fried Fish Skin and Fried Beancurd Skin.
If you’re bored of regular sliced fish soup, then you should give this one a try.

Ngee Ann City, Bishan And 6 Other Places You Didn’t Know Were Once Cemeteries
Did you know that Singapore has had over 21 cemeteries in the past? However, Singapore only has 3 active cemeteries now. The Lim Chu Kang cemetery, Pusara Aman Cemetery and Pusara Abadi Cemetery.
Due to the land scarcity that we face, graves had to be exhumed and cemeteries were cleared to make way for urban development. Today, many buildings stand atop old burial sites.
From HDBs to shopping malls, we’ve compiled a list of the places that were once cemeteries.
A Land With A Past
1. Fort Canning
Before it was Fort Canning, it was known as Bukit Larangan, which means “Forbidden Hill” in Malay. Built on it was an early Christian cemetery that was established there in 1822, and closed in 1865.
Following the closure of the Bukit Larangan Cemetery, the Fort Canning Cemetery was established.
[caption id="attachment_32000" align="aligncenter" width="510"] Image Credit: The Long and Winding Road[/caption] [caption id="attachment_32001" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Image Credit: @ashleysoo_[/caption]The doll was subsequently removed by SMRT staff. But it is still creepy.
3. Novena MRT Station
There was another Jewish cemetery that was recorded to be located just north of Moulmein road, adjacent to Thomson Road and Newton Road. It was established just before the First World War.
However in 1985, the cemetery was closed and the area was reclaimed for the development of a then-new MRT station.
If you look at the map, the only MRT station there is Novena MRT station.
[caption id="attachment_32012" align="aligncenter" width="666"] Image Credit: Google Maps[/caption] [caption id="attachment_32013" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Image Credit: Jewish Welfare Board[/caption]4. Ngee Ann City
The site where Ngee Ann City is standing on, used to be a Teochew Cemetery called ‘Tie Swah Ting’. It was established by the Ngee Ann Kongsi, a Chinese Teochew charitable association in 1845.
The cemetery spanned 72 acres of land and housed 25,000 to 30,000 graves. However, in 1957, the cemetery was cleared and some of the land was acquired by the government.
A 10-storey Ngee Ann building was built on the land, though it was demolished in 1985. Today, the Ngee Ann City Shopping Complex and Civic Plaza can be found at this old burial site.
[caption id="attachment_32031" align="aligncenter" width="668"] Image Credit: Flickr User Nicolas Lannuzel[/caption]Even though it has been disproved by Ngee Ann City’s architect, there is still a rumour going around in Singapore that the complex was designed to look like a Chinese tombstone.
Do you see that the flagpoles resemble joss sticks and the fountain in the civic plaza resembles wine offerings?
5. Caldecott Broadcast Centre
Caldecott Hill used to house a Chinese cemetery. The land was purchased to be used as a burial ground for Chinese people. However, the cemetery was closed to build a mansion.
Oddly enough, a fire broke out and razed the mansion to the ground, killing the whole family. The old Mediacorp Caldecott Broadcast Centre used to be situated on the hill.
[caption id="attachment_32032" align="aligncenter" width="580"] Image Credit: Image Credit: Wikipedia[/caption]Today, Woodleigh MRT station sits on part of the old cemetery and HDB has commenced work on turning the area into a housing estate with HDB flats and private houses that will be complete by 2018.
7. Bishan
Before Bishan became Bishan, it was a World War 2 battle site and subsequently a Chinese cemetery known as the Kampong San Teng cemetery.
[caption id="attachment_32034" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: hiveminer[/caption] [caption id="attachment_32035" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Image Credit: hiveminer[/caption]The Chinese cemetery was eventually closed to make way for HDB estates and the kampong was renamed from San Teng to what we now know as, Bishan.
Honourable Mention
8. Bukit Brown
Did you know that Bukit Brown has an MRT station?
Yes, you read that right. Bukit Brown MRT station. If you’re squinting at your phone trying to spot Bukit Brown MRT station on the SMRT map, you won’t find it.
Bukit Brown MRT station is located somewhere between Caldecott station and Botanic Gardens station.
[caption id="attachment_32036" align="aligncenter" width="2048"] Image Credit: Wikipedia[/caption]It is currently not in operation as the ‘station’ is located at an empty plot of land that’s smack dab in the middle of the Bukit Brown cemetery and the Chinese cemetery at Mt. Pleasant.
[caption id="attachment_32037" align="aligncenter" width="893"] Image Credit: Google Maps[/caption]However, the government has announced plans to build a 4-lane road which will cut through Bukit Brown cemetery and the rest of the cemetery will be cleared to make way for new public housing town in 40 year’s time.
Singapore is a small country and eventually all cemeteries will have to make way for housing development. Would you live in an estate built over an old cemetery?

If You Like Blackball, This Dessert Shop Will Have You Questioning Your Loyalties
If you’ve been to Taiwan, you’ll know that one of the snacks the country is well-known for is its Jiu Fen Taro Balls.
Sold along the streets of bustling Jiu Fen, these coloured balls are chewy and are served alongside other ingredients such as sweet potato and green tea balls, in red bean, green bean or sweet potato soup.
A party of flavours and textures, if you’re a fan of these dessert bowls and are a strong believer that ‘the more the toppings, the better‘, you’ll love Nine Fresh‘s local spin on the Taiwanese classic.
[caption id="attachment_30985" align="alignnone" width="3975"] Image Credit: Chee Kuen[/caption]Nine Fresh
If this is the first time you’re hearing of Nine Fresh, you’re missing out!
Nine Fresh is a dessert stop that has been serving up quality cups of the delicious dessert for almost 5 years now.
That is, cups of grass jelly, beancurd, or ai-yu jelly (or a mixture of the three) heaped with beans (red bean, green bean, pinto bean, eight treasure bean), balls (mini taro ball, taro ball, durian ball), flavoured pearl jelly (aloe vera, mango, lychee, passionfruit), black pearls, and many more toppings.
At Nine Fresh, they’re all about keeping traditions fresh, and recently, they’ve done exactly that by rolling out 2 new series of desserts.
Nine Fresh Goes Local
The first is its Local Flavours series, which consist of dessert creations inspired by some of our favourite local desserts, including Chendol and Cheng Teng.
[caption id="attachment_30980" align="alignnone" width="2787"] L-R: The Cheng Teng Cup, Durian Yin-Yang, The Chendol Cup (Image Credit: Chee Kuen)[/caption]The Chendol Cup ($3.80) has a grass jelly base and is topped with green chendol jelly, attap seeds, red bean, and taro balls.
With (almost) all the ingredients you’d typically find in a chendol dessert, this is a far less sweet variant of the coconut milk-heavy dessert.
The Cheng Teng Cup ($3.80) also has all the good stuff you’d find in the traditional dessert: pong tai hai, lotus nut, barley, and sago. These are served over a wobbly ai-yu jelly base. And of course, you can’t forget the taro balls!
[caption id="attachment_30984" align="alignnone" width="3024"] Image Credit: Chee Kuen[/caption]As durian lovers, our favourite is the Durian Yin-Yang, a half beancurd, half grass jelly base that’s topped with black sugar jelly dice, taro balls, and a generous scoop of rich durian puree – yes, actual durian flesh. The flavourful and creamy durian, combined with the array of chewy and QQ ingredients in the cup make it a winner – and all for just $3.90.
Singapore’s Favourites, According To Data
Another exciting addition to Nine Fresh’s offerings is the Fanspiration Series, a bunch of cups and flavours that are essentially customer-generated.
The best-selling flavour and ingredient combinations based on Nine Fresh’s data, gathered from its create-your-own-cup promo this year, you can’t go wrong with these flavours that are beloved by many, many Singaporeans.
[caption id="attachment_30981" align="alignnone" width="3024"] The Yin-Yang Cup (Image Credit: Chee Kuen)[/caption]Some of these items in this series include the all-black The Black Cup ($2.90), the all-white The White Cup ($2.60), and The Yin-Yang Cup ($2.90), which is half black and half white – at least when it comes to the base.
[caption id="attachment_30982" align="alignnone" width="4032"] Aww In One Cup (Image Credit: Chee Kuen)[/caption]If you simply can’t decide between the bases (or love them all equally), the Aww In One Cup cup contains all three of them.
This cup comes piled with black pearls, taro balls, and mini taro balls on top. If you’re a first timer to Nine Fresh, we suggest you go for this so you can sample a little bit of everything and figure out which you prefer!
From there on, you can customise your own cup and create your own perfect combination of ingredients.
With so many decadent desserts out there, from rich chocolate treats to lava toasts, Nine Fresh is – literally – a refreshing change from the lot.
Priced very affordable from $2 to $3.90 for one of their pre-set cups, Nine Fresh’s desserts are a lighter option with so much to offer in the way of taste and flavour!
The next time you’re craving a refreshing dessert, make sure to pop by one of Nine Fresh’s 16 outlets – you won’t be disappointed!

Candles come in so many shapes, sizes and smells, you can never have one too many!
Let’s face it, candles are pretty versatile and should become a necessity in every house. Not only to they do beautify your room, the scents they give off when lit will soothe your frazzled nerves and can freshen up any room almost immediately.
Plus, candles come in super handy if you are planning a romantic night in (if you know what I mean).
We waded through the tons of options out there and chose some of the more interesting scents that will make your house smell absolutely scent-sational.
1. Bath & Body Works – But First, Coffee!

Revel in the smells of thatched bungalows and the salty sea breeze with Glasshouse‘s tropical scent.
The flowery yet tangy smells courtesy of cilantro, tangerine and orange blossoms will leave you with the thoughts of clear sandy beaches when you are actually in a hot and stuffy HDB flat.

3. fresh – Sake

The Citronella Candle caught my nose with its grassy, floral smell that reminds me of the clean smell of wet grass.
Not only is citronella said to help reduce stress when used in aromatherapy, it also works as a mosquito repellent! Perfect for our tropical weather.
Artisan’s Garden sells the this candle in a small travel tin so that you can easily carry it around if you are thinking of going camping or traveling to tropical countries.
Where to get it: online [caption id="attachment_30051" align="alignnone" width="1196"] All candles come with the logo on it! (Image Credit: Beautyfreshfave)[/caption]
Yes, this is the same beauty brand that you find in Sephora. Not many people are aware that NARS carry candles (mainly because they don’t bring it to Singapore), which you have to buy through the NARS US website or Amazon. And yes, the shipping fee is definitely worth it, because the candles can seriously compete with their make up range. My pick would be Acapulco, a chocolate-based candle that comes layered with traces of whipped cream and coffee beans. It’s delicious, but not overly sweet – kind of like dark chocolate. Where to get it: NARS US website or Amazon Another underrated candle from a brand that specialises in selling something else! If you love the smell of your TWG tea, you can now get their candle version so that you can enjoy the delicious smells without having to brew a pot. Their White Earl Grey Tea Scented Candle is a fresh, raw fragrance of bergamot and imperial silver needles that smells as good as it tastes. The humble roti prata has come a long way since its beginnings as a simple flatbread we ate either with curry or sugar.
These days, you can find all kinds of prata – salted egg prata, eggs benedict prata, chicken floss prata, maggi mee prata, etc. While there have been hits and misses, that’s not stopping eateries across the country from creating new prata flavours for the adventurous Singapore foodie.
The latest “hipster” prata, however, isn’t a new prata flavour – instead, it’s a prata that looks different altogether.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow
The Rainbow Pratas are sold at Banana Leaf Pork Briyani, a newly opened food stall at Wave 9 in Woodlands. Unlike many Indian food stalls which are halal, this stall is not halal as the stall owner is a non-Muslim.
The pratas here are made from their own unique recipe, and currently come in green, blue and pink. Dyed using food colouring, keep a look out for new shades as Banana Leaf Pork Briyani is exploring expanding the colour range of its pratas.
[caption id="attachment_30030" align="aligncenter" width="813"] Image Credit: Banana Leaf Pork Briyani Facebook[/caption]Currently, only the prata kosong and egg prata come in these bright rainbow hues. That said, they may sell coloured versions of other prata flavours soon, so keep your eye out for them!
The rainbow plain pratas are priced at $1.50 each, and the rainbow egg pratas are going at $2 each, and they come served with your choice of chicken or pork curry.
So far, customers are already asking for new colours and flavours, so hopefully, it’ll be a ‘ask and you shall receive’ type of situation. If there’s something you have in mind, put in a request and who knows? You may see it on the menu in the near future!
Not In The Mood For Prata?
If you’re not in the mood for prata, opt for their Pork Briyani ($8) or Black Chicken Briyani ($8), the signature dishes at this stall.
[caption id="attachment_30029" align="alignnone" width="1357"] Image Credit: Banana Leaf Pork Briyani Facebook[/caption]Alternatively, you can’t go wrong with the usual Chicken Briyani ($7) and Fried Chicken Briyani ($7).
Unfortunately for many of us, this hawker stall is located all the way at Woodlands. If you’re living in the North of Singapore and are ever craving some prata, hit up Banana Leaf Pork Briyani! And for best effect, make sure you get a couple of these pratas at a go – the more the colours, the merrier!

Mdm Halimah Yacob Loves Mee Rebus, And This Is Where She Gets Her Favourite Bowl
If you’ve been following the news closely, Madam Halimah Yacob should be no stranger to you – especially with the Presidential Elections coming up.
A woman who will make Singapore history if elected president, Madam Halimah Yacob has quickly become a favourite for the position, given her long years in public service and the support she’s garnered over that time.
[caption id="attachment_28959" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Thumbs up! (Image Credit: Halimah Yacob)[/caption]Because Halimah is human – and Singaporean – too, we had one very important question for her: What is her favourite food?
We sat down with Halimah and asked her what she loves to eat. As it turns out, even her tastebuds are humble too.
[caption id="attachment_28961" align="aligncenter" width="300"] (Image Credit: Halimah Yacob)[/caption]If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your life…
Like a true blue Singaporean foodie, Halimah had a hard time deciding between three of her favourite foods: mee rebus, laksa and nasi lemak.
Eventually, she decided on mee rebus – specifically, the one served at Teh Tahrik Makan Restaurant, tucked away in an obscure coffee shop in Marsiling; this is her go-to place for the dish.

A woman after our own hearts, Halimah gets excited when talking about her favourite foods.
Without missing a beat, Halimah continued, “Since you asked me what food I like, you must ask me what dessert I like ‘cos I’m thinking of food already. I like tau suan and goreng pisang.”

Many of us are familiar with the term ‘skin age’, but did you know there is also such a thing as ‘hair age’?
Like our skin and the various parts of our body, our hair ages too. With age, it grows thin, turns grey, gets dry and brittle, and can lose its shine – these are all signs of ageing when it comes to the hair on our heads.
Maybe you’re touching your hair, wondering if you’re a 20-something with 30-year-old hair. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. In fact, many Singaporeans actually have hair older than they are! That’s simply because there are many factors about the average Singaporean’s lifestyle that can age your hair.
If you’re curious about what some of these factors are, here are 3 things you had no idea are ageing your crowning glory:
1. Sun Damage
[caption id="attachment_28910" align="alignnone" width="1429"] Image Credit: Vitalitas Portal[/caption]Most of us Singaporeans are well familiar with how much sunshine this littler red dot sees (Read: LOTS of sun).
By being out in the sun for a long time, we subject our hair to UVA and UVB rays, which damages the outer covering of our hair strands (the ‘cuticle’), resulting in a dry, dull and brittle mane.
The next time you foresee yourself spending hours under the hot sun, try sporting a cap, or moisturise your tresses with oils, conditioners and treatments to keep them looking youthful and healthy!
2. Over-shampooing
