[caption id="attachment_17707" align="alignnone" width="560"]Image source: Not on Orchard Image source: Not on Orchard[/caption]

Amoy Street has a special significance in our local culture and dining scene. More so with the recent move of many award-wning F&B brands to the area. As such, they’re throwing a welcome party, so you can get to know these new kids on the block!

The Fun Stuff

Set to take place on the 20th of November, the party will see Amoy Street transform into a street festival filled with fun, food, drinks and community activities.

Cool Music & Art Display

There will be a variety of vendors, exciting activities, and live performances featuring acts by DJ KFC and DJ Roscius hailing all the way from the UK.

[caption id="attachment_17711" align="alignnone" width="542"]Image source: Roscius Official Image source: Roscius Official[/caption]

For those who need their art fix, there will also be limited edition prints and paintings from local and uprising artists from The Artling along the street.

Get Your Fit On

We know too much good food will make you guilty, and guilty feet have got no rhythm!

That’s why one of the world’s faster growing studios, F45, is here to whip the guilt out of you.

[caption id="attachment_18456" align="alignnone" width="851"]Image source: F45 Image source: F45[/caption]

For the curious but intimidated, this is the perfect chance to try a HIIT class.

You’ll get a taste of a legit workout class in an all fun no stress environment. Just go with the flow and enjoy the good vibes.

Grow Your Own Edible Garden

Amoy St Bloc Party is not all about eating, drinking and dancing.

Besides taking home Instagram moments, you’ll head back with skills of growing your own edible garden.

[caption id="attachment_18457" align="alignnone" width="960"]Image source: Edible Garden City Image source: Edible Garden City[/caption]

Learn a trick or two from our favourite urban farming collective, Edible Garden City, to grow food at under-utilised spaces like roofs and sidewalks.

In-Car Party With Jeep

The best part of all, you can hop on the Jeep Wrangler and it will take you on a ride around the block!

[caption id="attachment_17709" align="alignnone" width="861"]Image source: Autoblog Image source: Image source: Uwishunu Image source:Image source: Paper Kitties Image source: Paper Kitties[/caption]

Their modern interpretation of Southeast Asian cuisines are executed using progressive techniques with a hint of Western influence.

While you’re at it, don’t forget to try their cocktails too.

2boCHINChe

Fuelled by chef Diego Jacquet, boCHINChe is all about bold Argentinean flavours.

[caption id="attachment_17692" align="alignnone" width="593"]Image source: bochinchesg Image source: bochinchesg[/caption]

Just like us, Argentina is a melting pot of cultures and Argentineans loveeee their food. boCHINChe’s passion is reflected on their menu, prepare your palate for an explosion of flavours.

3. Employees Only (Cocktail Bar)

What?? A craft cocktail bar from New York is in Singapore?

[caption id="attachment_17693" align="alignnone" width="597"]Image source: asia.cocktails Image source: asia.cocktails[/caption]

Yes, and it’s one with unpretentious NY vibes, buzzing energy, shoulder shaking music, and mighty fine cocktail techniques (that’s what they’re famed for).

The place can get really busy but trust us, it’s worth the wait.

4. Le Binchotan

What do you get when you combine French and Japanese cuisine? Le Binchotan!

[caption id="attachment_17697" align="alignnone" width="594"]Image source: Franny Wanny Image source: Frannywanny[/caption]

Named after the white charcoal used to smoke French-Japanese tapas, this super chic eatery dishes some of the best skewers in town.

There’ll be 10% off selected sake bottles in conjunction with the Bloc party! Now, that calls for a Kampai!

5. Burger Joint

Dubbed the best burger in NYC, Burger Joint is all about yummy burgers done to perfection!

[caption id="attachment_17698" align="alignnone" width="480"]Image source: Kendricljx Image source: Kendricljx[/caption]

From cheese to portobello, and of course, bacon burger, their patties are extremely juicy and well seasoned. Top if off with craft beer (there’s a selection of 16 taps!) and that’s how every day should end.

6. Maggie Joan’s

Looking for Maggie Joan’s can be a lil tricky. It’s an underground Mediterranean restaurant located in the alleyway just off Gemmill Lane (literally a hidden gem).

[caption id="attachment_17699" align="alignnone" width="601"]Image source: glen_ballis_autopiloton Image source: glen_ballis_autopiloton[/caption]

Famed for their cosy ambience and gastronomical food, every dish here is so pretty that you’ll want to feed your camera first before digging in.

7. Gemmills

Gemmills has a split personality – it’s a cafe by day and a wine bar by night.

[caption id="attachment_17700" align="alignnone" width="597"]Image source: The Silver Chef Image source: The Silver Chef[/caption]

Expect a range of fresh pastries, sandwiches and coffee during the day and once the sun is down, bring the vinos out!

8. Birds of a Feather

Sichuan food can be a little intimidating. Just thinking about the flower pepper gives us chills!

[caption id="attachment_17702" align="alignnone" width="540"]Image source: Bing_leow Image source: Bing_leow[/caption]

But at Birds of Feather, the Sichuan-ness actually enhances the flavours of the Western cuisine served. And the ambience there will make you feel like you’re in Chengdu… well, minus the giant panda bears!

Party All Night

The event might start at 3pm, but once the sun is down (10pm onwards), step into Ding Dong as the playful restaurant space is reimagined into a retro dance floor on this day!

[caption id="attachment_17705" align="alignnone" width="776"]Image source: Ding Dong Image source: Ding Dong[/caption]

Bust a move to 80s and 90s hits at the afterparty and get a Ding Dong Daiquiri or two while you hit that high!

What are you waiting for? Get your peeps together and start planning your Amoy St Bloc Party trail.

Zouk Bids Farewell To Its Home On Jiak Kim Street With 4 Of Its Most Iconic Parties

If you turned 18 in the past 25 years chances are you celebrated your 18th birthday with a bang at Zouk. Over the years, Zouk has become THE SPOT for many Singaporean youth to celebrate this momentous right of passage.  There’s a pretty high chance you celebrated a slew of weekends at the popular nightspot throwing parties you’ll never forget (or ever live down)!

We take a look at Zouk’s history and how it’s celebrating its move with a bang!

Zouk @ Jiak Kim St

[caption id="attachment_18382" align="alignnone" width="780"]zouk-before baleric bandwagon.sg[/caption]

A year or two after its conception, Zouk saw the start of Balearic club nights. Celebrating house music associated with Ibiza, the party island of the world, Balearic was the first of many successful themed nights. For the pioneering Zouk community, Balearic night will be the throwback party you’ve been wishing for!

The 2000s saw indie and electronic centred music coming onto the scene. Readset Glo, saw live acts and synth heavy bands helming the stage instead of Zouk’s usual DJ-centric programming.

The Only Guide You Need To Exploring Lavender: Food, Cafes, Fitness & More!

What is the one thing that is most synonymous with Lavender?

Most would say the ICA, but there’s so much more to Lavender than expired passports, automotive shops and hardware resellers.

We decided to spend some time in the neighbourhood to see if there is truly plenty to see, eat and do to keep us entertained throughout the day.

Things to do

CrossFit Fire City

If you aren’t already familiar with the jargons WOD, AMRAP and EMOM, the idea of CrossFit might sound daunting to you.

[caption id="attachment_17617" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: CrossFit Fire City Credit: CrossFit Fire City[/caption]

It is a common misconception that CrossFit is only for the fit, or the very strong. But that’s not true because the WODs (Workout Of the Day) are tailored to each individual’s abilities.

At CrossFit Fire City, box owner, Sam (affectionately known as Uncle Sam), and his friendly community of CrossFitters will ease you right into the workout.

[caption id="attachment_17618" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: CrossFit Fire City Credit: CrossFit Fire City[/caption]

Because the WODs are different each time, your muscles will never get used to any particular routine. This makes CrossFit one of the most effective ways to tone up those muscles.

Just an hour-long WOD will get you pumped up and energised for a day of exploring.

Opening Hours:
Mon – Thu: 06:30 – 21:00
Fri: 06:30 – 20:00

Trium Fitness

Just a stone’s throw away from Sam’s box lies Trium Fitness – a newly opened fitness studio specialising in yoga and pilates.

[caption id="attachment_17620" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: Trium Fitness Credit: Trium Fitness[/caption]

Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to flood the studio as you breathe in your downdog, or invert in aerial silks.

The studio not only teaches conventional yoga styles, but also allows you to stretch your head (and body) in classes like wheel or aerial yoga.

[caption id="attachment_17621" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: Trium Fitness Credit: Trium Fitness[/caption]

Wheel yoga is relatively new in Singapore.

The class makes use of the Dharma wheel to open the shoulders and arch the back for a deeper stretch. This will aid in your poses on the mat.

Aerial yoga needs no introduction – cirque du soleil style, aerial yoga helps yogis gain confidence in being upside-down. Also, it helps to build arm and upper body strength.

You’ll have so much fun that you wouldn’t even remember that you’re working out.

What to eat

The Refinery

The Refinery is just a couple units down from Sam’s box, perfect for post-CrossFit refuelling.

[caption id="attachment_17622" align="alignnone" width="740"]Credit: The Refinery Credit: The Refinery[/caption]

High ceilings, local art, marble table tops, and wooden communal tables – The Refinery is one of the most Instagram-worthy cafes on the island.

But that’s not all this cafe has to offer.

[caption id="attachment_17623" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: The Refinery Credit: The Refinery[/caption]

The Refinery boasts an extensive menu that changes depending on whether you’re heading over for a weekday dinner or weekend brunch.

The food is Japanese-inspired with a local twist, so expect yakitori-style skewers from the grill, donburis, and local cafe classics such as food laced with truffle and salted egg flavours.

We loved ‘The Epic’ Beef Gyudon with Foie Gras because, really, who can resist rib eye beef, foie gras, onsen egg and truffle flavouring in a single dish?!

The Refinery

115 King George’s Ave, Singapore 208561

Sat: 11:00 – 16:00, 18:00 – 01:00

AEIOU

At the other end of CrossFit Firecity lies an understated cafe, its signage reading “Oriental Antique House”.

[caption id="attachment_17627" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: AEIOU Credit: AEIOU[/caption]

Though it is actually a cafe called AEIOU, its signage hasn’t proven to be entirely wrong.

AEIOU is adorned with upcycled furniture – rattan chairs, wooden tables and all things vintage. It is pretty much like a modern karang guni’s very well put-together home.

[caption id="attachment_17626" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: AEIOU Credit: AEIOU[/caption]

Their upcycling extends to tableware, where vodka bottles are cut into cups that hold their drinks and desserts.

[caption id="attachment_17628" align="aligncenter" width="640"]aeiou3 Credit: AEIOU[/caption]

Bask in nostalgia as you sip on your avocado coffee – one of the highlights of their menu.

Creamy avocado blend in one hand, and a shot of espresso in the other, marry the two for a party in your mouth.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how the butteriness of the avocado mellows out the bitterness of the coffee.

To shop/ explore

Mahota Commune

If you find joy in shopping for fresh produce, then Mahota Commune is as close to food heaven as you’ll get.

[caption id="attachment_17632" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: Mahota Commune Credit: Mahota Commune[/caption]

Mahota Commune occupies the entire third level of Kitchener Complex – all because they are a market, kitchen, pantry, clinic and wellness studio all rolled into one.

Windows surround the area, allowing natural light to pour in – complementing the home-grown greenery and wooden furniture in this relaxing space.

[caption id="attachment_17630" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: Mahota Commune Credit: Mahota Commune[/caption]

At Mahota Market, load your basket with fresh, organic produce like fresh meats and vegetables, to imported condiments and whole food snacks.

Then, enjoy garden-to-table goodness at Mahota Kitchen.

The restaurant serves up an interesting choice of italian fare or hot pot choices. You can delight in vegetables grown organically in their farm in Shanghai, and sustainably sourced meats that are reared without antibiotics or hormone injections.

Before you leave, pick up some cold pressed juices and pastry for the family at Mahota Pantry. The pastries are baked fresh in-house using unbleached, wholemeal flour, no less!

[caption id="attachment_17629" align="alignnone" width="960"]Credit: Mahota Commune Credit: Mahota Commune[/caption]

As mentioned, the space is also home to a TCM clinic and a wellness studio. The studio conducts yoga, meditation, tai chi and HIIT classes – some of which are complimentary.

I can totally envision myself spending the entire day here, winding down and indulging in the goodness of whole foods.

Feeling Experimental? Try Alchemist Beer Lab’s Super Funky Infused Beers!

Still recovering from last month’s Oktoberfest? Well, the Alchemist Beer Lab might just be the cure for this hangover – more beer for you!

Alchemist Beer Lab

Located at the snazzily glamorous Beach Road, this first and only beer lab in Asia may look very experimental. However, they’re actually the brainchild of the team behind Little Island Brewing Co. at Changi.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-50-42-pm

Rest assured that they know what they’re doing!

What is Infused Beer?

The idea of infused beer may sound new, but it has been around for a while in Europe.

Basically, ingredients are first placed into the fusion chamber. Compressed gas is then released before the beer is injected into a tower.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-33-18-pm

Flavours from ingredients are extracted as pressure is being released from the process. This produces a surprising and delightful twist to the beer.

If this sounds too rocket science for you, just think of it as cold pressed juice, but the beer version.

For Those Who Love Classics

At Alchemist Beer Lab, a whopping 16 infused beer towers are available for brewers to experiment.

Out of the 16 glass towers, eight taps consist of familiar creations by Little Island Brewing Co., such as Sister Golden Ale, Singapore Pale Ale and the award wining That Old Black Magic, that clinched a Gold Medal at the 2016 Asia Beer Awards.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-31-20-pm

Other popular flavours such as sweet and semi-dry cider, red and white wines are also available for drinkers who prefer classics.

If you’re up for some funk, any choice of the remaining eight towers would make for a great pint of beer.

New & Best Flavours to Try

It’s all about experimenting!

The infused beer for the eight towers are refreshed every week. This means you get to try new flavours all the time.

14591795_1583914505250613_3013903297968251171_n

What caught our attention is ‘Obama‘, a dry Irish stout infused with marshmallow, vanilla pod and mint leaves!

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-34-32-pm

On top of that, we heard a crowd favourite is the Ugly Sister Golden, a combination of ale infused with grilled pineapple and anise, a type of eastern Mediterranean spice.

If those sounds too avant-garde for you, go for the 50 Shades of Pink, a pretty safe yet fun mix of cider and pink guava.

One word of advice – we know it’s super satisfying to gulp your drink down but when it comes to these test tubes of alcohol, its best to take it slow and savour every single sip.

For The Peckish Drinker

It’s normal to get the hunger pangs when drinking and fortunately Alchemist Beer Lab has got some grub to fill your tummy up.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-36-41-pm

From Sticky Thai Chicken Wings, Duck Fat Chips to even Smoked Wagyu Brisket Tortilla, you can count on these tapas to complement your drink.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-37-37-pm

If you’re feeling really hungry, or so happen to drop by the place around lunch time, you would not want to miss their set lunch menu priced from $15.90++.

Why Visit?

The beer (duh), the food, and of course the ambience! The place is really intimate and cosy, perfect for a date or a catch up sesh with your friends.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-39-23-pm

It’s quiet enough for conversations and the decor is modern and edgy.

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-10-40-25-pm

All beers are priced at $12 before 7pm and $15 after 7pm.

If you’re there with a couple of friends, go for the party pack. You’ll get to pick 3 beers and enjoy them at a price of $30 (before 7pm) and $38 (after 7pm). Red and white wine are priced at $12 all day, everyday.

Overall, Alchemist Beer Lab is the new hangout spot for all beer and tapas lovers. With such interesting and experimental infused beers, you’d surely want to grab your buddies for a night out!

The Tippling Club: Where You’ll Not Only Sip Cocktails, But Also Smell Them!

With the introduction of new head bartender, Joe Schofield, Tippling Club has revamped their cocktail menu. Their new menu, titled Sensorium, seeks to unify aromas with spirits to invoke memories and emotions of our experiences.

“80 per cent of the flavours we taste come from our sense of smell”

It’s with this idea that the new menu was conceptualised. We’ll now not only sip cocktails, but also smell them! Sounds awesome, no?

Credits: Bless Press

Widely regarded as an innovative and forward thinking bar, the Tippling Club’s new menu has proven once again, that they’re ahead of the game.

The birth of the Sensorium Menu

The new menu places the emphasis on the aromatic rather than alcoholic.

Nothing stirs up cherished childhood memories like the smell of red crayons

14681065_1118416008236866_2919446330889782362_o

The idea was that customers should choose their preferred cocktails based on an aroma that interests them. It’s about your personality, your chosen smell, more than the choice of alcohol.

The process

We were honoured to have been given the opportunity to attend a tasting session.

First, they presented the whole menu through a bouquet of perfumed blotters.

credits: Bless Press

Scofield encouraged us to smell each one and to pick out our favorite scents. This was in line with their philosophy of placing precedence on smell.

And god, did they smell amazing.

He even stated at one point that he would be happy to see customers ‘stealing’ the blotters to keep for memories sake.

After showing us the scents and cocktails, it was time to taste them.

‘Potentially, we could be the first bar in Singapore to marry aromatic fragrance to our cocktails to such an extent. Perhaps even globally.’ Chef-Owner Ryan Clift

Well, we don’t doubt him.  The cocktails did not disappoint.

Cocktail – Rain

Have you ever actually thought about how rain smells like?

credits: Bless Press

Somehow, Tippling Club has managed to accurately capture the scents that immediately invoked my memories of rainfall upon the first whiff.

Rain is a eclectic mix of citrus, soda and vodka, served with an edible stone.

Don’t worry, the stone, unlike its namesake, is actually cushiony. The initial bite is chalky, but it soon melts in your mouth for that earthy aftertaste, just like how I feel rain would taste like.

The drink itself is light and refreshing. The flavours and the alcohol were delicately balanced.

The Negroni

They say you can’t beat a classic.

unspecified-6

Well, we think that Tippling Club has just made the classic even better! Negroni doesn’t just taste good – it smells just as delish!

Essentially still equal parts gin, sweet vermouth and campari, Tippling Club used ultrasonic sound waves to emulate a barrel-aged flavour. The traditional orange garnish is actually a negroni-flavoured gelatine mix!

Refreshing, punchy, and uplifting. We’d love to go for seconds.

The Campfire

Do you reminisce your adventurous days spent outdoors by the campfire?

This cocktail will help you relive those memories.

credits: Bless Press

This is an incredible melody of marshmallow milk, burnt syrup, ash and gin, served together with a slightly roasted marshmallow.

How does it smell? Smoky, and absolutely delectable. We never thought we could describe a smell as delicious, until now.

The Caramel

The caramel was a clear favourite both in terms of sight and smell.

unspecified-10

The aroma was pleasantly tart, elevating the rich, saccharine flavour of caramel with just a hint of citrus and rum.

The drink itself proved to be well balanced and not overly sweet, served along with a salted caramel lollipop made in house.

No better treat than this.

Details

The cocktails on the Sensorium menu go for 22SGD a pop, which was a pleasant surprise. With such detailed thought and meticulous care put into the menu and cocktails, we fully expected them to go for more conventional premium prices.

photo_2016-10-23_15-09-14

Alas, we forgot that Tippling Club does not do conventional, they’re that special round peg in a square hole. Furthermore, it only goes to show that the priorities of Tippling Club are to delight their customers.
